09:53he was a hard-nosed dude
09:55but what we've learned in the past when we're out picking
09:57the hard-nosed guys are the most sensitive guys
10:00later pigeons
10:01for a guy that didn't want to sell anything
10:04and was a little bit standoffish when we first got here
10:07you warmed up and i'm glad you did because i love those chaps
10:11they're chaps
10:23we're in southern california today

11:32oh yeah i'm a treasure hunter so i'm out there and i collect everything that i like
11:36there's so much neat stuff and i'm a sucker for all of it
11:40yeah check it out
11:41well 37 years i mean you've been that's quite a long time
11:44you're not even that old are you
11:45barely
11:46how long ago did you close wow look at those doors
11:49that's wild
11:50these are elephant doors they weigh a thousand pounds per size
11:53i mean you can see all the strapped iron and stuff
11:55keep the elephants in keep the elephants out
11:57okay is this a man door and then the whole thing up
11:59yeah this is just for the guys when you're moving the big tuskers in and out
12:03yeah open them both
12:05oh yeah look at this mike
12:07wow
12:08this museum is jim's life's work
12:11and his life's work revolved around other people's lives
12:15tell me about the rancheros vistadores
12:18uh it's a local club started in 1929
12:21tom micks walt disney
12:24those are the guys that started the club
12:26that and the big industrialists all rich guys
12:29brook trout will be served for breakfast at our santa cruz camp
12:33they'd go out and play cowboy
12:34go up and drink and have camps and just corrals for two weeks
12:39okay so are you familiar with this artist
12:40nicholas fifiris
12:42he was a world war ii cartoonist for the army
12:45and he did there's a zane gray book cover
12:48that's original cover to that to that western book
12:51so he was like the norman rockwell of
12:53santa barba i'm gonna kick your ass westerns
12:55his wife was the model
12:57so all the ones with girls in it he would use her picture
13:00so like a piece like this what are you thinking on something like this
13:03that's original fifiris and he commands some dough
13:071500
13:08really
13:09and that's real fair
13:11so what so here's a program from 1931 for the
13:14that's a two years second year of vistadores
13:17and i was noticing it looks like you you are invited so you have to be invited
13:20it's a big deal it's like high rollers you have to wait and be on a list to see
13:23like a lottery system
13:24yeah no no no you gotta pass i mean is the guy bitching enough does he have enough money
13:28ronald reagan used to go too
13:30yeah i mean about a ton of people
13:32yeah it's a big high roller
13:33he was still
13:34is this an original photograph
13:36yes the building's still there
13:37wow
13:38so the guys that get all greased up and glass you know come out and just start singing
13:42they were celebrating california's history horsemanship and culture while they were partying
13:48shooting guns riding through rivers and just uh you know being boys again man
13:54what year is this
13:5529
13:56so like this would have tom mix and stuff in it
13:58oh yeah
13:58tom mix walt disney
14:00but these are original photographs though
14:02carl obert
14:03carl obert and he was a vista dory and you go on the rides and take all the pictures
14:08would you sell these two pieces right here
14:11yes
14:12two grand
14:15and that's rock bottom
14:17how about these two pieces
14:19and this photograph
14:202000
14:2321
14:25i mean it's
14:26i know i know i know i got you
14:29all right you've been fair man i'm doing
14:31i mean i just i mean it's an incredible story and the photos documented but i mean
14:36obviously the biggie is
14:37and they still do it
14:38the biggie is
14:39yeah they still do it
14:40yeah okay i gotta ask because i love the southwest stuff
14:43and we don't get a chance to buy too much of it where we're from we're from the midwest
14:47okay yeah okay
14:48this piece here i wanted to ask you about
14:51channing peaks
14:52uh he was a local artist a cowboy i think he might have been a vista dory too
14:57really it says channing peaks horsehair hat that's the horsehair
15:02so the hat band is his not the hat
15:04no so the significance of this piece obviously is the hat band but the hat's a really good
15:10resist all the hat's probably worth at least 200
15:13so how much is it with the uh the hat band or would you sell this
15:16the hat band's got some damage there it looks like it's about ready to come loose
15:19500 bucks
15:21okay let me park this right here for a second
15:26what are you thinking for what are you thinking on the chaps and who's where that was and what do
15:30you know about it
15:30western items americana all of that stuff is extremely hot every single little boy wanted to be a cowboy
15:39oh i like those oh let's see like it's a card theme yeah it's cards cards diamonds clubs it was
15:45about the romantic idea of the cowboy that fashion the lifestyle the american west and those wide open spaces that's
15:54something that never goes out of style
15:56what are you thinking on these a minimum two grand really the conches are worth that the guy that really
16:02wants them because they five the chaps were real ornate they're like show chaps you could work in them but
16:08they're more of a show-offy type of chap
16:10what time period do you think they're from 30s okay so here i'm gonna throw it at you 2 000
16:16bucks for the hat and the chaps
16:20uh yeah 22 you got to come up a little bit the hat is these are badass
16:25no i know and to be honest with you i've had some pretty nice chaps before and i've had them
16:29in our store in nashville which i think really represents a market that could sell them you know because there's
16:35a lot of people there that travel that are in the entertainment industry you know and some of them have
16:39hung around the store quite a bit but put them on the wall but i haven't had any this ornate
16:43the only thing i can say is there's nothing busted on them or anything the belts are good 21
16:47what do you want
16:49i should have said two i should have said two i should have stuck with the two
16:53i know i know i should have stuck with the two
16:55hey like you said we don't come across that stuff
16:56no i mean that's
16:57every inch in this place is fascinating
17:06let's go upstairs now
17:07all right your feet are clean
17:08barely
17:09okay more stuff
17:12so what is this like scratch and dent yeah yes oh i'm getting really excited now because jim's taking me
17:19up to the room where i want to be
17:20i've got so much stuff upstairs that i went like this and all the and made the museum just downstairs
17:27you just shook it out just shook it and went down
17:31would the uh errol flynn piece be for sale
17:33yeah that's rare
17:35yeah my dad used to do errol flynn stunts
17:37really yeah my dad started off doing stunts
17:41and his big break is when he did stunts for errol flynn
17:44and randolph scott he did some for john wayne
17:47that's a big silk
17:49they died with their boots on
17:51damn it's good
17:53when i look at a piece like this
17:55i think about what was happening at that time period in america
17:58in 1941 when this film came out
18:01fdr was president
18:02japan had bombed pearl harbor
18:04and we were at the verge of going to war
18:06so at this time even more
18:08people wanted to escape to the movies
18:10yeah i mean obviously this would have been something in the lobby
18:12yeah but they didn't send these out to everybody
18:15no
18:15like what do you value that at
18:17700
18:18yeah
18:19600 bucks
18:21another 50 and it's yours
18:24650
18:26all right man
18:27yowie
18:28you gotta tell me where you got this thing
18:30these are insane
18:31anything with somebody smoking i always picked up
18:34the frame's 40s
18:36what are you thinking
18:378
18:38i'm gonna do that
18:39i'm doing the 8
18:40i'm doing it
18:40yeah i mean a smoking cowboy
18:42you can't beat it
18:43and this one is unbelievable
18:44that's sort of a classic
18:45okay the painting's older than the frame
18:47oh yeah the frame's 10 years old
18:50800
18:50you know you're just really bending me over the corral
18:55yee-haw
18:56800
18:56i'm not budging
18:58all right

20:59everybody's got their own niche
21:00and just there's like the little brotherhood of junk
21:02you know
21:03we're all playing the same game
21:04a local museum like this
21:06isn't just the soul of the neighborhood
21:08it's the soul of the community
21:10and i hate to see a museum of this caliber
21:13lose its lease
21:14hey

21:31see you jim
21:50frank and i are headed over today to meet a guy named bob
21:53that has gone through a lot
21:55he owned a historic property that caught on fire in 2015
21:58the building held his business and his collection
22:03we got a flyer
22:05man you're on it
22:06but between bob's determination and community support
22:10there's a lot of great things happening now
22:13hey i got one job to do there
22:15this place is huge
22:16well that is huge
22:17danny was right
22:18pretty cool
22:20looks like the biggest building in town
22:22yeah
22:28all of a sudden frank and i find ourselves in the middle of a preservation project
22:33this is beautiful man
22:35i know and from what i'm seeing this place is going to be a huge asset to the community
22:41again
22:42hey hey
22:43hey howdy
22:44hey which one of you guys is bob
22:47hey i'm mike
22:48hey nice to meet you
22:49nice to meet you
22:50bob how you doing
22:51mike that's easy to remember
22:53you talked to daniel on the phone
22:54yeah i did
22:55my name is bob russell
22:56we're in eagle point oregon
22:57at the butte creek mill
22:59it was the only water powered flour mill still operating west of the mississippi river
23:04when daniel told me about this on the phone i just couldn't imagine it being this big a project
23:09this is a big project
23:10it's a big project
23:11those joys up there are exactly the same that were put up in 1872 dimensionally
23:16so we had them all sawed locally
23:17so was the whole building built in 1872 or were there additions
23:20this center section was built in 1872
23:22okay
23:22they added the store on in about 1880
23:24the rest of it was cobbled on over the years
23:27it's a very historic structure
23:29and it's not just important to him
23:31it's important to the community
23:33and i owned it for 14 years
23:35i came down here in 2005 with my wife
23:38i walked in the front door
23:39it had just been put on the market
23:41and i knew i wanted to buy it
23:42with no experience making flour
23:44i literally knew the second i walked in there
23:46i want a piece of this
23:47this is just too cool
23:48and believe it or not
23:50we just had a great life in the portland area
23:52and put an offer in two days later
23:55and it just seemed to fall in place
23:57like almost immediately
23:58it really did
23:59we spent 12-15 years
24:01kind of restoring the grounds
24:03getting in the basement cleaned up
24:04and making flour
24:06i've told people this many times
24:07everybody needs a change up in their life once in a while
24:10when the place caught on fire
24:12the community turned out in droves
24:15to help clean up and sift through the ashes
24:17trying to find and save anything they could
24:20because they knew right away
24:23and bob knew right away too
24:25that they were going to rebuild this structure
24:27bob realized that this wasn't just him and his wife's dream
24:32it was always the community's dream as well
24:35the beauty of this is the butte creek mill foundation
24:39has raised the 2.1 million dollars
24:41and we're going to get that other million dollars to get this finished
24:44we've got the community behind us
24:46and we're going to work as hard as we can to get it done
24:48and it's going to be awesome
24:50all right hey
24:51i might i might have to peel a couple bucks off
24:54before i walk out the door
24:55you got me pretty excited about it
24:57bob loves the mill so much
24:59that he's willing to sell off some of his personal collection
25:03to meet the foundation's goal
25:04all right i want to show you a few things in here
25:07i got into this old barbershop stuff
25:10oh yeah you did
25:11and you know i found the barber pole
25:14barber bottles
25:15bob might have lost a lot of stuff in the fire
25:17but man when you walk into his house
25:19you would never know it
25:21i mean the whole place is like a museum
25:23it's incredible
25:25so how long have you been collecting this type of stuff
25:27so i started collecting barbershop stuff
25:29when i was 11 years old
25:30i was riding my bike through old town in portland
25:32which i always did looking for old stuff
25:34and they were tearing down a building
25:35and there was a wooden barber pole there
25:37and so i asked the guy tearing down the building
25:40if that was going down with it
25:41he said yes you can have it if you want
25:42went home got my dad
25:44tied it to the family station wagon
25:46and drove home with it
25:48bob and i are a lot alike
25:49we both started collecting when we were kids
25:52i've had that barber pole now since 1961
25:54and i started looking for barber mugs
25:57so that one pole
25:58that one pole
25:59is the reason why you started collecting all this barber stuff
26:02yeah
26:02wow
26:03yeah
26:03the whole thing was barbershop related
26:05you couldn't have staged it any better
26:07i mean he's like an art director in my eyes
26:09because if you look at the shelves with the mugs
26:12and the product
26:13and the placement of everything in this room
26:15you really think you're walking into an old time barbershop
26:18well you know it's an old boot jack
26:20right you put it down like that set it down
26:22put your foot on it
26:23put one foot there and pull your boots off
26:25you know back in the old days put it on the ground
26:28hold on to it step on and get your boots off
26:30you know it's pretty cool it's cast iron
26:31it's ornate
26:32great look to it
26:33i'd probably take 40 bucks for it
26:36i like it
26:37i'll do 40
26:38all right
26:39i mean this is kind of a crossover piece too
26:41somebody collects cast iron
26:42somebody collects guns
26:44yeah
26:44all right
26:45i i kind of added this room on
26:47because i needed a space to hang out with my pals
26:49oh my gosh
26:51i wish i would have made it bigger
26:52oh look at the fair
26:53wow
26:53frank
26:54if you can imagine six guys smoking cigars in here at one time
26:58i can
26:59oh my gosh
27:01that jitney bank is neat
27:03it's a rare one
27:05yeah you've got some great stuff in here
27:07oh my gosh
27:10oh wow
27:11so what's this do bob
27:13so it's a trade stimulator once again
27:15and you put a nickel in here
27:17and we push this
27:19and i better get another
27:20there we go
27:21it spins but the dial spins around the numbers
27:24okay
27:24wherever it stops on the numbers how many cigars you win
27:27there you won two cigars
27:29two yeah
27:29i absolutely love this
27:31this would have been like on some executive's desk
27:34or somebody that was you know
27:35obviously selling a lot of product
27:37you know what i mean
27:38look at it's got the shield the pegasus
27:41is it heavy
27:42got some weight to it
27:43yeah
27:44yeah i mean it doesn't look like there's any brakes or chips or anything in it
27:47nope
27:47yeah what are you thinking on that
27:51i gotta get two bills for it
27:52i really do
27:53i just
27:53i love it
27:55i love it
27:56i mean frank can you imagine
27:57first i need to get a desk
27:59but yeah i can imagine down that
28:00i can imagine
28:01you don't have a desk
28:02well not one that would be
28:04i'm doing it
28:04all right
28:05i'm doing it
28:06you got me
28:06i'm doing it
28:07200 bucks
28:16i just don't know where to stop looking
28:19what about that piece
28:20what do you value the winchester
28:21the winchester board
28:22you know they have sold
28:24they have crazy money
28:25yeah between 25,000
28:2835,000
28:29but if you think that's cool
28:30i got a one-of-a-kind item
28:31i'd love to show you
28:33that you
28:33i know you've never seen another of
28:35well i mean there's a lot of them in here
28:37right
28:37well this is
28:38this believe it or not
28:40it looks like a new binding on it
28:42because it is
28:43but it is
28:44the official record book
28:46from san quentin penitentiary
28:48wow
28:49wow from what year
28:50well this is
28:521902
28:53san quentin is a state prison
28:55that's been around
28:56since before the civil war
28:58not long after california became a state
29:00san quentin opened up
29:03hat on
29:04hat off
29:05head shaved
29:06and prison stairs
29:07oh that's all the same guy
29:08what'd this guy do
29:09look at him
29:09he's got the death penalty
29:11oh wait yeah he looks like
29:12amos ziggler
29:13yeah
29:14we're the first degree from seattle
29:15look at him
29:16jesus
29:17yeah
29:17oh wow
29:18look at that guy man
29:19he is
29:20squirrely
29:20there's some rough looking dudes in there

29:24i'll tell you
29:24oh there's
29:25what'd this guy do
29:27burglary
29:27burglary
29:28yeah
29:28what'd he do
29:29he's a felony
29:30felony
29:30whatever that means
29:31how'd you come about this
29:33i found this probably 45 years ago in portland
29:36i probably never had anything in my collection that i had more comments on
29:42even years later oh do you still have that san quentin book
29:47i had to have it rebound
29:48because you can see there's some water damage to it
29:50oh yeah
29:50after the fire
29:51i have a picture of
29:53of a fireman picking it up just soaking wet
29:57oh this was in the fire over there
29:59this was in the fire
29:59it was soaking wet just dripping water
30:02and the cover had fallen off
30:03and i kind of from a distance said oh save that save that
30:08and he put it in a tub and
30:10slid it over to me
30:11it was just crushing to see that happen
30:14and there was a person in
30:17who lives in the ashland area
30:19who came by the next day just by chance
30:21who is a museum restoration expert
30:25and said oh i'm just heartsick about this fire
30:29is there anything you have that i can maybe help with
30:32so i gave it to her
30:33after 43 days she called me
30:36and she said she'd spent six hours every day for 43 days in a row
30:40and was able to get the entire book back together
30:44i couldn't believe my eyes when she brought it back to me
30:48and she wouldn't take a penny for doing it
30:50but what a character study
30:51i mean you just look at these guys
30:53what do you value this at
30:56you know before the fire i valued it at over ten thousand dollars
31:01really
31:02yeah
31:02wow
31:04i mean and tell me how you came up with that
31:06i mean i'm just i've never seen
31:07i've seen a similar one sell at some auction
31:09you know you take these publications
31:11and one sold for 22,000
31:13that wasn't as old as this one
31:15didn't have as many
31:16and didn't have as many
31:17fell ones in there
31:18so this is all from o2
31:19there's no it looks like everything i'm looking at is o2
31:22here's o2
31:23everything's o2
31:24wow
31:24well with the damage that's on it
31:26what do you value it at
31:27you know it's hard to say
31:29if you didn't see it before
31:31and you just saw it like this
31:32oh i see now it's getting into the real
31:33yeah there's a couple bad pages
31:34but only a couple
31:36yep
31:37you can spend hours looking
31:38so you do
31:39this was exactly the way it was
31:40you rebounded
31:41that's cool
31:42so where are we at with this
31:44i mean would i sell it
31:46yeah
31:47it would be a fairly big number
31:49i'd probably uh consider 5,000 bucks
31:53oh really
31:54yeah
31:543,000 bucks
31:57wow you are just killing me
32:00i could have been asked
32:01uh 100
32:03200 times over the last 40 years
32:06to sell it
32:084,500
32:11i got you
32:18well you know
32:19that would go a long ways towards the mill
32:25all right
32:27we're doing it
32:28we're doing it
32:29you're not
32:29you were crazy to buy it
32:30now it's crazy to buy it off you
32:31yeah
32:32you know
32:33every single thing that i sold to mike and frank
32:35i felt like
32:37they had a connection with it
32:40they appreciated it
32:41all right
32:42that is a really good piece
32:44i've learned over the years
32:46that
32:48the antiques don't own me

33:57okay
33:57so jill has been dabbling with selling things here and there
34:00and she might be selling the property off and there's no way in heck she could take this collection with
34:05her
34:06so she doesn't collect any of this stuff no she's not really a collector she's got pieces that she sent
34:11back that are hers she's pretty excited about getting some of the stuff out there i'm glad she's at that

35:42wow this guy does like big stuff
35:44he does
35:45anything big and heavy
35:46that was him
35:46holy cow
35:48what
35:49yeah
35:51did you see the cabinet there
35:53are you kidding me
35:54this is western frontier man
35:56aj anderson hardware and gun shop
36:00fort worth texas
36:02he got that down at round top brian called me up when he was down there and he goes you
36:07will not believe what i just found and he just loved that item there's no pairs of spurs but that
36:12allows them to have a bigger selection you know the biggie for me here is
36:17the winchester
36:19if you look at the ammunition
36:21if you look at the ammunition that's around 1910
36:23it says established 1870 look how long they've been in business right you know i mean wow the case is
36:30ornate it's all there it's untouched it's it's just unbelievable and then you look at this side of it and
36:39it's like even mind blower you don't think it can get any better and it's early barbed wire
36:44so this is like a brilliant display piece that the retailer made the retailer made this piece winchester didn't make
36:52this piece it's literally three different categories of western americana authentically placed in this case
36:59it's built by a retailer to show off some of his best product in a small area the claw feet
37:06are like ugh
37:08you know that silvered mirror has kind of faded out
37:11this is one of those pieces that's like a once in a lifetime find
37:15it's a mind blower man
37:18uh
37:20i think i want to sell that one
37:22you don't
37:23ugh
37:23i talked you out of selling it because i was so excited
37:27um
37:27i paid four thousand for it
37:29really
37:30yeah i love it man i really do i mean i don't think there's a huge amount on the back
37:34end at all but i just i love it i would love to own that it's
37:39unbelievable to me i'm excited just like he was
37:42can i think about it
37:43absolutely
37:44thank you
37:45absolutely
37:46and then there's this empty case which has absolutely nothing in it
37:49right
37:50can you read what is written on it
37:53what does it say
37:53what oh oh barely okay really barely you can read it okay
37:58it's made chicago that's not too far from us
38:01so i'd pay uh
38:03200 bucks for empty like that
38:05i'll take 200 on that
38:06yeah i can
38:07these are the cases that are manageable for anybody
38:09right
38:16you know i used to own retail stores i used to have two bicycle shops and it was in a
38:20very small space so i was always looking for interesting ways to display things and i had to make a
38:26lot of that stuff so when i see this that's obviously mass produced you know h.e. plat saw rack
38:33johnstown pa it's just brilliant
38:35they display the saws in a way that they're far enough apart to where you can see all the way
38:40down the blade but what you're really looking at too there is the handle where you're gonna spend most time
38:46with it how it's gonna feel to you
38:48i love this piece i mean if you would think about selling this you know it's just it's brilliant i
38:55haven't seen this one before everybody loves everybody loves the saw display yes and it's still here yeah okay so
39:01what's that telling me
39:03all right
39:04i gotta think about it
39:06all right well let me ask you about this uh this big rack on the wall over here
39:11the meat rack
39:12the meat cathedral
39:13this is the largest butcher rack i've ever seen
39:16usually you find one bracket with a marquee on it but you can see that this was manufactured this way
39:23these all come off you know to hang the meat or to clean it and obviously to move it
39:29i know i was with brian when he bought that at an auction in northwest ohio i cannot remember what
39:35he paid for it to the right person i think it's worth as much as three grand
39:39the problem is is finding the person right that could utilize it like when i look at it i think
39:45it still needs to be in some sort of a retail setting unless you got a massive kitchen
39:50you know i mean it's it is what it is on the top are what i'd like to call the
39:54meat marquee it's got the bone saw it's got the cleaver it's got the steel to sharpen the knife i
40:00mean that's where it starts and then you look down and it just kind of drapes into this medieval meat
40:06market the arms that mount to the wall they're cast iron they're heavy they're very ornate this was obviously in
40:13a very large butcher shop i've never seen one so big this is a very cool piece the fact that
40:19it's got a
40:19wax wieners on it takes it over the top i'd pay um i'd pay two grand for the meat rack
40:27and here's what i'm thinking two grand for the meat rack four thousand for that little tiny display with the
40:33bullets in it and a thousand dollars for the saw display
40:38seven thousand dollars i would want the rubber hot dogs with it too
40:43those are pieces that brian really liked but there's a lot here i gotta look at it i can't keep
40:49everything
40:5075
40:55split it with me okay we doing it yeah
41:01god i love this it's incredible with the meat you're crazy you're just crazy like brian was
41:08i think mike and brian would have got along it's like a meat altar the cathedral of meat okay you're
41:14crazy it's incredible again you guys are all nuts just say it every single one of you collectors
41:24well jill i don't even think i don't even think we put a dent in it
41:29no it's typical so you're gonna go out to the barn tomorrow and go god did we get rid of
41:33anything
