00:00Wait to show you what me and my cool gadget jacket have got today.
00:03Go on, tell me.
00:05Well, you know you tell at the time and you use clocks and they're really big and they're heavy and...
00:09Well, look at this.
00:11Ta-da!
00:12It's really small, it can go around your wrist, you can take it everywhere you go.
00:16Look, look, look, look.
00:16Yes, Alex, it's a watch.
00:18Lots of people have got watches.
00:19A watch, that's a great name for it, a watch.
00:21Maybe Nina can inspire some ideas in brand new Go Digital.
00:25But lots of people.
00:33If you've got a question and you don't know where to go,
00:36ask Nina for some help, cause she's got a science show.
00:39She makes sense of her senses by helping all her fans
00:42by doing her experiments with potions and with bags.
00:45Touch your tongue.
00:47Fingers.
00:48Eyes.
00:49Ears.
00:50Nones.
00:51Nina and the neurons find out what you need to know.
00:54Nina and the neurons find out what you need to know.
00:57Look, he helps us with our eyes and Felix with our touch.
01:01Ollie sniffs our smells and sends some bells she hears so much.
01:03But he's Ollie's brother, he helps us with our taste.
01:06Then Nina's little neurons and they're coming to your place.
01:09Touch your tongue.
01:10Tongue.
01:11Fingers.
01:12Fingers.
01:13Eyes.
01:13Ears.
01:14Nones.
01:15Nina and the neurons find out what you need to know.
01:18Yeah!
01:19Nina and the neurons find out what you need to know.
01:21Oh, yeah!
01:23Nears.
01:23Nears.
01:25Nears.
01:26Nears.
01:27Oh, hello!
01:28Oh, I've got myself all a bit tangled.
01:30But look at my nice picture.
01:32I've joined up all the bits of string to make a web for my toy spider.
01:38Tickle, tickle, tickle, tickle.
01:39Oh, I hear a beep.
01:41I see a flash.
01:42I wonder what they're going to ask.
01:48Hi, Leah.
01:50Hi.
01:50We've got a question for you.
01:53How does the internet work?
01:55That's a great question.
01:57How does the internet work?
01:59We use the internet all the time to look for websites, videos and information.
02:04But how does all that stuff get to our computer?
02:07Why don't you come down to my lab and we'll investigate.
02:09See you soon, Nina.
02:11Bye.
02:12Bye.
02:13Well, I'm going to need some help to answer this one and I know just who to ask.
02:17OK, neurons, time to get to work.
02:38OK, today's question is how does the internet work?
02:42Now, which neuron do you think will be most useful in helping us find the answer?
02:45Me.
02:46Me, me, me.
02:47Me.
02:48Will it be Fabulous Felix?
02:51I can help so very much if you need the sense of touch.
02:55Will it be Beautiful Bell?
02:57I send messages to Brain from ear.
02:59If there's a sound, I'll help you hear.
03:01Will it be Lovely Look?
03:03Or looking unseen, day or night, I'll help you with your sense of sight.
03:08Will it be Awesome Ollie?
03:10If it's Pony or Wiffy but you can't tell, my messages help your sense of smell.
03:14Or will it be Baby Bud?
03:17Sour, salty, bitter or sweet?
03:19I'm your taste buddy whenever you eat.
03:23It's Luke and Belle.
03:34Today's question is how does the internet work?
03:37We use our eyes and ears to enjoy videos, games and other things on the internet.
03:42So, Luke and Belle, our seeing and hearing neurons will be helping us today.
03:47Right, I need to get the lab ready before the experimenters arrive.
03:52James loves eating lasagna, Peter likes watching rugby, Zach loves playing superheroes.
03:59My mum lets me on the internet.
04:02I watch videos on my computer.
04:05How does the internet work?
04:06But they all want to know, how does the internet work?
04:09So today, for one day only, Zach, James and Peter become the experimenters!
04:15Hi guys!
04:17Hi Nina!
04:18Welcome to my lab and thank you for your great question, how does the internet work?
04:22To find out the answer, let's start by using our senses.
04:26Whoop whoo! A senses experiment! We're ready Nina!
04:30Let's think about the internet. What do you use it for?
04:34Looking at websites, playing games.
04:36Yes, we can look at websites like the CBeebies website.
04:41And you can look up videos and information too.
04:44Or you can do loads of things on the internet.
04:47But you always need to let a grown-up know when you want to use the internet.
04:51That's right, Ollie, you do.
04:53Grown-ups help us use the internet safely.
04:56So experimenters, how do you see things on the internet?
04:59On your computer.
05:01On my mum's phone.
05:02Yes, we can use computers, phones or a tablet like this.
05:07All these things can use the internet.
05:09But how do they get to the websites we want to look at?
05:13Let's play a game to find out.
05:17We are going to make a pretend internet.
05:20So let's imagine that all these knobs are lots of different smartphones, tablets and computers all over the world.
05:27And the white ones are in people's homes or offices.
05:30And the red ones are big, huge computers called servers.
05:35The servers are where the websites are stored.
05:38Websites are made by people.
05:40And they're full of words, pictures, videos.
05:44And sounds and music, Nina.
05:47And sounds and music, Bill.
05:49And all these things have to be stored somewhere.
05:51So they're kept in these big computers called servers.
05:55Now at the moment, none of the computers on our board are joined up.
06:00So the people at home or work can't see the websites that are stored on the servers.
06:05What can we do?
06:07Join them up.
06:08Yes, join them up.
06:10Connect them.
06:10Let's get connecting.
06:12OK.
06:31Well done, experimenters.
06:33Now all our pretend computers are connected.
06:36So if this one wants to see a website that's stored on this server,
06:42then the server will send information all along here, whoop, to the computer.
06:49And the web is so big and complicated that there are lots of ways to travel around it.
06:55And we can see things from all around the world, Nina.
06:59We can, look.
07:00It's brilliant, isn't it?
07:02But what happens when we are connected to the Internet?
07:05How do we get all those pictures and information and other brilliant stuff?
07:09I think we need to go and find out more about how all these things zoom about.
07:17Oh, goody.
07:19I love this bit.
07:20I wonder where Nina is taking us.
07:23Nina said we're going to find out how things zoom about on the Internet.
07:27Zooming about!
07:28Maybe we're going to see racing cars!
07:32I don't think it's going to be cars zooming about.
07:35Look!
07:37Wow, experimenters, look at those big tunnels!
07:40And we are going to use those big tunnels to find out more about how information travels on the Internet
07:46when all the computers are connected up.
07:48So all the games and videos and words and pictures that we might want to see on the Internet
07:53are found on websites.
07:55And can you remember where websites are stored?
07:59Servers.
08:01That's right, websites are stored on big computers called servers.
08:05So if we want to look at a website, the server has to send a copy of the website to
08:10our computer.
08:11But that server could be really far away in another country.
08:15So if we want to see a picture of a dinosaur on a website from a server in America,
08:20the picture has to be sent all around the world to our computer here.
08:25That's really far, Nina.
08:27It would take days.
08:29Luckily, it doesn't, Belle.
08:31When we click onto a website, we see the picture in just a second or two.
08:35Here's a picture of a big dinosaur.
08:39Now, if I tried to run with this, would I be able to go very fast?
08:42No!
08:43And do you think that I could go through one of the tunnels easily with it?
08:47No.
08:48No, you're right.
08:49It might get stuck.
08:50And that's a bit like information on the Internet.
08:53Big bits of information can't travel very fast.
08:56And they can get stuck when there's lots of other information around, like a traffic jam.
09:01But if you break the information into little bits, they can travel separately on different cables on the web and
09:08get there faster.
09:09So I'm going to break up this picture.
09:11And I want you guys to take a piece each.
09:14And I want you to carry them through the tunnel as fast as you can.
09:17And look, these pieces are all numbered.
09:19And that's going to help us at the other end.
09:22So you're going to be going through different tunnels, but you'll end up at the same place.
09:26Ready?
09:27Steady, go!
09:37You're all here, but the picture is jumbled up.
09:41We need to put it back together again and we can use the numbers.
09:44So who had number one?
09:45Number one.
09:47And number two.
09:48Excellent.
09:49What about number three then, Peter?
09:51There it is.
09:53And number three.
09:56Well done, experimenters.
09:58And that's just like how the internet works.
10:01The server would split up the dinosaur picture into lots of tiny numbered bits and then send them down different
10:07cables to our computer.
10:09And at the other end, our computer would put them back together so we can see the picture.
10:15But the internet is really big.
10:17So how do we find the things we want?
10:19It's time for another experiment.
10:22Here we have lots and lots of stuff.
10:26There's not as much stuff as there is on the internet, but it's certainly too much for us to look
10:30through easily, isn't it?
10:31Yes!
10:32For this experiment, we are going to pretend that all this stuff is what's on the internet and I need
10:39something from our internet.
10:41And you guys are going to be the search engines that look for me.
10:44Now, search engines work by looking for keywords.
10:47So if you were trying to find a website about dogs, the search engine would look for the word dog
10:52on websites.
10:53And then it would show you all the websites that had something to do with dogs.
10:58Now, for my search, the keyword is blue.
11:01Blue?
11:03You need to use your eyes, experimenters.
11:15Fantastic.
11:16But I'm sorry those aren't what I wanted.
11:19There are too many blue things, Nina.
11:22The experimenters didn't know what blue thing you wanted.
11:25You're right, Luke.
11:26I didn't give the experimenters enough information.
11:28There are so many blue things here.
11:31If you showed me them all, I'd be here all day.
11:34So I think I need to give you some more keywords.
11:37OK, the keywords are blue, kitchen and cups.
11:42Go!
11:47Blue cups!
11:48Perfect!
11:49Just what I wanted.
11:50Now, how did you know where to look?
11:53We looked at the signs.
11:55That's right, you saw signs for two of our keywords, kitchen and cups.
12:00And that meant you could narrow the search down to just that area.
12:04And this is really important when you look on the internet.
12:08I'm sure you guys would have found me a blue cup eventually without the words kitchen and cup.
12:12But it would have taken a really long time.
12:15You need to give search engines the right keywords to narrow down their search.
12:20One or two words might not be enough.
12:26Your question was, how does the internet work?
12:29And I think we've answered it.
12:31The internet is lots and lots of websites connected all over the world by cables.
12:36The websites are stored on big computers called servers.
12:41Information zooms around the internet very fast.
12:45That's because it's split up into pieces to move around.
12:49Our computer has to put all the pieces back together at the end just like a jigsaw puzzle.
12:55We use search engines to find things on the internet.
13:00They're super fast and work by looking for keywords.
13:05So I hope that's answered your question.
13:07Thanks, Nina. Bye.
13:09You're welcome. Bye.
13:12If you want to know more about the science that's all around us,
13:16go to the Nina section on the CBeebies website.
13:18Have fun.
13:20Go digital.
13:21If you want to do it faster.
13:24Go digital.
13:25If you want to do it better.

13:40Yay.
13:40Making our lives easier in each and every way.
13:44Yay.
13:44Help us understand things and make it very clear.
13:48They make tricky tasks a piece of cake.
13:51I like cake.
13:52If you're trying to understand the world.
13:55But the answer is invisible.
13:59Invisible.
14:00Use the power of computers.
14:03Switch it on.
14:05Switch it on.
14:06Switch it on.
14:08Go digital.
14:09If you want to do it faster.
