Peter Rosenberg joins the show to discuss the Commanders offseason and the NCAA Tournament headlines.
Transcript
00:00And not to suggest this would ever happen, but if you ever had to move to the Burbs,
00:04would you do the tri-state up there, like Jersey, Long Island, Connecticut, whatever,
00:08or would any party you want to move back down to D.C.?
00:13Well, you know, there are things that would be appealing to me about going home,
00:19you know, if it made sense from, like, a work standpoint.
00:23Yeah, you got to work out there.
00:26Like, that's the hard part, you know what I mean?
00:28Like, listen, if Bram decided he was bored with calling the Commanders game, you know,
00:35and the phone rang, that might make it appealing.
00:39Short of that, I'm not sure what it would be, but, like, the problem is my wife's brand is Miss
00:44Hatton.
00:44She is not eager to change her name to Miss Jersey or Miss Westchester.
00:50So I got to keep making this money and show to she so we can, you know, maintain this life
00:57here.
00:58But the hard thing about a big city in America in 2026 is, like, the amount of money you have
01:06to make to really do it well is,
01:09it's frigging crazy, man.
01:11It's like, like, the money that I have right now, if I thought I would have had that when I
01:18was, like, a kid,
01:20I would have thought that meant I was rich, and it's just not like that.
01:25You know what I'm saying?
01:26Yeah, dude.
01:27You know, tell the piece, you don't have to be in Manhattan to keep that name because, hell,
01:33the Commanders haven't been where their name was for a long time.
01:37You know, that's a great point by you.
01:39Yeah.
01:40And all their names change.
01:41You know what I'm saying?
01:42There you go.
01:42Hell, the Giants and the Jets play in Jersey.
01:44Yeah, and they're the New York Giants.
01:47That's exactly right.
01:48That's exactly right.
01:50Talking with our friend Peter Rosenberg.
01:52He'll be on the air ESPN New York before too long here.
01:55How crazy is New York right now for St. John's?
01:59I mean, you know, New York in college sports is weird.
02:05Like, there's pockets of it where it's a big deal, and we actually have St. John's on our air.
02:13You know, I'll say, let me say this.
02:17If they get to the second weekend, and they should.
02:22I think there's a good reason to think they would.
02:24If they get to the second weekend, it'll become a really big thing.
02:30I think right now, you know, if they don't do anything special, it's kind of like Patino just doing what
02:37Patino does.
02:38Like, this is the same thing Patino did at Iona.
02:40You know, he'll go to your school, and he will immediately turn you into a thing.
02:47But, like, for it to become, like, insane.
02:50Now, listen, they played at MSG, like, all year.
02:53So, like, they got off campus immediately because of Patino.
02:57Like, you have to give the guy his props.
02:59No matter what we want to say about Rick Patino, there's plenty of things to say about him.
03:03He will immediately.
03:04I don't know if there's another coach in sports that we could really say is in his class, not just
03:13in terms of being great.
03:14They're obviously better coaches.
03:16Wooden's a better coach.
03:18Coach K was a better coach.
03:20We can get into the Roy Williams-Dean Smith conversations.
03:23But in terms of going to different programs and immediately transforming a program, guys, I don't know if there's anyone
03:32better than Patino.
03:33And for it to become truly meaningful here, though, they got to go on a run, man.
03:38Let them find a way to beat Duke next weekend, and then you're having a really crazy conversation.
03:43They'll get a lot of fans in the nation if they do that.
03:45I promise you.
03:46For sure.
03:47Hell, I'll be cheering for them.
03:49I'm curious where you are on this, Peter.
03:51When Maryland hired, I don't even know which one it was.
03:55I guess Buzz.
03:56I wanted them to hire Patino.
03:58Maybe it was when they hired Willard.
04:00I was like, and the knock with Patino then in an NCAA that's now paying players and letting guys transfer,
04:08the knock against Patino then was like, oh, you know, he's older.
04:11He won't be in it for the long haul.
04:13And I was like, who cares?
04:14Are any of these coaches in it for the long haul anymore?
04:17Willard's already gone.
04:18He'll just be doing what he always did.
04:20Right.
04:21Just be good.
04:23No, and the thing is, like, respectfully to, like, St. John's and everywhere else he's been,
04:30like, I think that the impact he could have at a place like Maryland would be even greater.
04:36Yeah.
04:36Like, I feel like he could have really had a shot.
04:41And I'm sorry, you kind of look foolish now if you're Maryland.
04:44Like, you had a chance to have a five-year run where you're playing meaningful basketball?
04:50There's no year like they've had this year.
04:53That's not even an option if you brought in Rick Patino.
04:57There's no world that the program is now in basically the most embarrassing spot it's been
05:04since friggin' Tony Massenburg walked in the door.
05:08Wow.
05:08I mean, dude, since Bob Wade and the death penalty.
05:10But you know what?
05:11The decision-makers at Maryland, they've got to change their mindset and their attitudes.
05:16They still think they are winning a championship with Gary.
05:19They're not.
05:20They've got to learn how to compete on a level to get there.
05:24And right now, I don't believe the decision-makers do the things that everybody else is doing.
05:29It's silly, man, because it would have been really – listen, like I said,
05:33he has some level of baggage with him, Patino, but not like it's that serious, man.
05:38Like, there have been no problems up here.
05:41It could have really been special, and it is the exact opposite.
05:47And I think everybody, like me and you, JP, we go into this weekend with, let's be honest,
05:54like it's just not the same level of excitement that we used to have.
05:57Right?
05:57You're just – I really am not hyped for the tournament like I would be when Maryland's meaningful.
06:03That said, I'm sure you made a bracket.
06:05What do you got?
06:06Who do you like?
06:09Bro, you don't want to waste your listeners' precious time with my – I'm going through it
06:15like someone who hands it off to their wife and is just picking off the colors.
06:19I'm like – I think I ended up with Duke, Michigan, and Michigan.
06:24I went super chalk.
06:25I don't even – I'm just being honest.
06:29I'm not saying this is good, right, justified, or anything.
06:32I am as out on the NCAA tournament as I have been in 35 years.
06:37I – it just doesn't – it just doesn't do it for – I mean, listen, I'm going to be
06:42watching today,
06:43and tomorrow when LIU plays at 130, I'm very – you know, they'll be the 16th seed.
06:50It'll be really fun to see what Rob Strickland is able to do with LIU.
06:53Like, there are little fun stories to watch, guys, but I'm not going to lie, my heart just isn't in
06:58it
06:58the way it's been at different times in my life.
07:00I mean, that's understandable.
07:01A lot of people feel that way these days.
07:03Are you – I don't know this, Peter.
07:05Do you bet?
07:06Are you a gambler at all?
07:09I have periods where I come and go with gambling.
07:13Like, I'm – listen, if I do bet, though, you know it's on FanDuel.com slash local.
07:20Don't you feel that's my code?
07:22But I hit it every once in a while.
07:25I like to do it for, like, a UFC night.
07:28The tournament, I will consider throwing things down here or there, but I don't go crazy with it.
07:34I really – it starts – listen, I have too much of an addict's mentality where, like, after a little
07:40bit,
07:40I can find myself getting too into it.
07:43Not where I'd start spending stupid money, but where I'd start letting it affect my mood,
07:47and I have no interest in doing that.
07:49All right.
07:50Hey, man, we appreciate you making time for us.
07:52Enjoy the tourney, what you're into.
07:55God, I am such a buzzkill.
07:57It's tournament Thursday.
07:58You're like, you beat the tournament?
08:00I'm like, no.
08:00No, I'm scared of becoming a raging addict.
08:04I'll bet it for you.
08:05Don't worry.
08:06Don't worry.
08:07JP does all that for you.
08:08He's good.
08:09That's right.
08:09I'm sure you do.
08:10Enjoy the weekend, boys.
08:11All right.
08:12That's our guy, Peter Rosenberg.
08:13When we come back, phone lines are open.
