00:00College Hoopstalk on 106.7 The Fan is presented by Bud Light.
00:04Easy to drink, easy to enjoy.
00:07Bringing Rob in right now.
00:08Rob, what's up, man? How you been?
00:10What's going on, fellas? How we doing?
00:11I'm not going to lie, the little 50-cent bumper music there got me in a mood.
00:15Yeah, man.
00:1650-get-to-go.
00:18I imagine you are busy as hell right now, so I appreciate you making time for us.
00:22Everybody check out Rob's work at the Field of 68.
00:26I honestly thought the bracket was pretty fair.
00:29One of our producers is an Auburn guy.
00:32Even he admits Auburn shouldn't have gotten in the tournament despite Bruce Pearl's constant politicking.
00:39This morning, though, I'm guessing you might know Stanford Steve, but Stanford Steve is a big Duke fan,
00:45and he was ranting on his podcast about the draw the Dukies got.
00:49The East bracket is completely loaded, but do you think it's unfair?
00:54Most of those are East Coast teams.
00:58Well, I think the East is always going to end up like that because of the way the bracket sets
01:02out.
01:02But if you think I'm going to cry any tears for Duke or for Stanford Steve, then you're wrong.
01:07Honestly, I think Stanford Steve might be a little upset that Stanford didn't find their way into the NCAA tournament.
01:12So I think he's venting.
01:14I think he's projecting it.
01:15No, the team that I think got the worst of the draw was St. John's because St. John's won the
01:21Big East regular season.
01:22They won the Big East tournament.
01:23They just beat the brakes off UConn on Saturday, and they come in, and in the second round, guess what
01:29you get?
01:29Darren Peterson of Bill Self in Kansas.
01:31And if you win that, guess what you get?
01:32You get Duke, the number one overall seed.
01:35Like, that's tough, man.
01:37That's not a great draw for St. John's.
01:39But the issue that I have with the way that it broke down for Duke is that that matchup with
01:45St. John's is the one where I was like, that could be a little scary for him.
01:50Because they got a guy named Zuby Ejiofor at the five who's big and who's physical and who could really
01:55give Cam Boozer some problems.
01:57They play a style that can bother a team that has point guard question marks, and now their starting point
02:05guard is done for the year with a foot injury.
02:08So, I think that's where I'm a little bit concerned when it comes to this draw for Duke.
02:13But at the end of the day, man, Duke is the best team in college basketball right now, even without
02:18Kayla Foster.
02:19So, I don't think it matters.
02:20I think you can line up whoever you want, and there's a very good chance Duke is going to just
02:24kind of knock them all down.
02:25So, it's not the greatest draw.
02:27I will say, though, John Shire, you want to prove yourself as one of the best coaches in college basketball,
02:31you're going to be able to do it.
02:32Because you're going to beat one of Bill Self or Rick Pitino, and you're probably going to beat one of
02:35Thomas or Dan Hurley.
02:37So, he has it set up to be able to kind of etch his name in the record books.
02:42That kind of surprised me every year.
02:43You get a good team, supposed to be number one.
02:45They beat people all year.
02:47Then they get into the tournament, and they want the easiest route.
02:50Why does it have to be that way?
02:53Yeah, Beamish, you just want all the smoke, huh?
02:55I mean, my whole thing is, if you're going to be the best, give me Michigan, give me Arizona, give
03:00me Florida, give me UConn, give me everybody.
03:02Yeah, I want them all.
03:03No, I hear you.
03:05And the thing about it is, we talk about this every year, and odds are pretty good that you're not
03:11going to just face the best team coming out of each region, right?
03:15Like, someone's going to beat somebody.
03:16There's going to be an upset somewhere.
03:18It's going to get a little weird.
03:19That's just what the NCAA tournament is and what makes it so great.
03:24And, yes, there's a whole lot of great coaches in that bracket, right?
03:28But you're not going to have to play both Bill Self and Rick Pitino.
03:31You're not going to have to play both Dan Hurley and Tom Mizzle.
03:34And, frankly, if you're looking at the three seeds, I'll take the one.
03:39Even if it's coached by Tom Mizzle, I'll take the one that doesn't have an NBA player on it in
03:43Michigan State, right?
03:43If you're looking at all the two seeds, I'll take the one in UConn, even with Dan Hurley.
03:48And I'm saying this as a UConn fan.
03:50I would take the one that looks like they've kind of lost their mojo and lost their way a little
03:53bit this season.
03:54Would you rather have them or go play a Houston team that made it to the finals of the Big
04:0012 tournament?
04:00Would you rather play UConn right now or an Iowa State team that was beating the brakes off of everybody
04:04on a glass floor out there in Kansas City?
04:07I think UConn is the one that you probably want out of those two seeds.
04:11So, yeah, I get it.
04:12There's a lot of big-name coaches, but it's – I don't know.
04:15They're not going to give any of these teams cakewalks.
04:18So, it is what it is.
04:19Yeah.
04:20Talking with our buddy Rob Doster here on the Rude Guest Hotline.
04:23Rude makes the most reliable HVAC equipment in the DMV.
04:26You can give Rob a follow at Rob Doster, D-A-U-S-T-E-R.
04:31Check out his work at Field of 68.
04:35I do a NCAA tournament, Calcutta, every year, and it's possible I have had won too many and spent a
04:44little more than I planned on.
04:45And the team that has burned me more than anyone is Arizona.
04:50How real is Arizona this year?
04:53Is this the year they get to the Final Four, maybe win another title?
04:57I think they're the best team in college basketball right now.
05:00I think they're the most complete team.
05:01I think they have the team that can beat you in any way.
05:06Like, if you want to get physical with them, they're bigger than you.
05:08If you want to get into a track meet with them, they're one of the best teams when it comes
05:11to running and gunning in college basketball this year.
05:15If you want to try to get into a three-point shooting contest, that's maybe not the best idea for
05:19them, but you know what?
05:19They have enough guys that can make them that it doesn't matter.
05:22You get in a close game, they got the best closer in the sport.
05:25If you want to get into a defensive battle, like, every one of those dudes looks like they would be
05:28playing with B. Mitch on Sundays, right?
05:30Like, oh, look at Brady Burden.
05:32That dude looks like he can go play middle linebacker for the Arizona football team.
05:36Jaden Bradley is a senior, and he is strong.
05:38Co-op Pete? Co-op Pete comes from a football family.
05:41Like, how that dude did not end up in pads is baffling to me.
05:44They are big.
05:45They are strong.
05:46They are physical.
05:47They run good offense.
05:48Like, I think this is the year, man.
05:50I think this is the year that they get it done.
05:52So, go ahead and go spend all that money on Arizona.
05:55Don't blow all that money.
05:57Michigan doesn't have their backup point guard.
05:59Duke doesn't have their starting point guard.
06:01All three of those teams are kind of in that same level.
06:03So, I would, if you're going to do it, this is going to be the year.
06:05What about the Gators, though?
06:07I mean, defending national champs.
06:09I know they lost to Vandy in the SEC tournament, but they had been red hot prior to that.
06:14Yeah, so Florida is, they're very, very good.
06:18And I think that they are right there as the fourth best team in college basketball.
06:22The difference is, I think, with Michigan, with Arizona, and with Duke, if you can kind
06:29of take them out of their game, they can still beat you in a way that does not think the
06:33best
06:33style of play for them.
06:34And what I mean by that is, if you take Arizona out of their ability to, like, get out and
06:38run, they can still beat you in the half court, right?
06:40If you limit Michigan's ability to force turnovers and get in transition and do some
06:46of the stuff that they do on the break, they can still beat you in the battle because they
06:50have a guy like Adyamara, who's such a good passer, and they have a couple different point
06:54guards.
06:54Mellie Cadell has been really, really good for them.
06:57I think Florida is more limited when it comes to a half court situation.
07:02They got the best front court in college basketball, and I think they're the best team at the
07:05rim in college basketball.
07:07They're so good on the offensive glass.
07:08They're so good at protecting the rim.
07:10They're so good on the defensive glass.
07:12They're going to own the paint against you.
07:14But if you can get back in transition and you can keep them from getting easy baskets
07:17and you can make them really work on the offensive glass, they're going to get some, right?
07:22You've got to accept the fact they're going to get some offensive rebounds.
07:24But if you can make them work and keep them limited and don't let them get those second
07:28chance, like, tipping opportunities, then if they can't get the easy baskets, they have
07:32a tendency to struggle just a little bit in the half court.
07:35So I think that they are the fourth best team in the country and deserve number one
07:39seed in the South.
07:40But I think that they're just a little touch below those other three.
07:43The other problem with Florida is they're going to Houston for the regional.
07:47The number two seed in their region is Houston.
07:50Kelvin Sampson is playing chestnut checkers, boys.
07:53Kelvin Sampson is smart.
07:54You know why?
07:55He knew that regional was coming to Houston, and he got Rice to be the host.
07:59Houston's not hosting it.
08:00If Houston hosted that regional, they wouldn't be able to play in Houston.
08:03He got Rice University to host regional in Houston so he can play his regional
08:08games, his Sweet 16 and his Elite Eight games in Houston, in the Toyotas and in
08:13his home city.
08:13That is going to be a home game for the Cougars.
08:16So kudos to him, man.
08:17Well, I ask you this question.
08:19Play chestnut checkers.
08:20We thought Alabama could, well, I thought Alabama could be a problem for some
08:23people throughout the tournament.
08:25Their guy got busted yesterday.
08:26Is he going to be able to play?
08:29Oh, man, I don't know.
08:30So my guess is probably not, like, he's in a state where weed is illegal, and he had
08:35two pounds of weed in his house.
08:37Like, that's going to be a tough one to explain.
08:40That's a tough one to explain.
08:41I will say, though, like, I have a very hard time getting up in arms about a guy that's
08:47getting arrested for weed when I literally can go right down the street here in New
08:50Jersey, and I can go buy some weed from the store.
08:52Like, I can buy it in bulk like I'm going to Costco.
08:54So it is what it is.
08:57I'm hoping.
08:58I'm hoping that.
08:59So they're on spring break right now.
09:00What I hope is that when we get past it, he'll be able to get through it.
09:05Like, I just can't get behind the idea of a dude missing out on this opportunity to play
09:12in the tournament because of weed.
09:14But it is dumb.
09:14I will say it is really dumb.
09:16If you know it's illegal, like, you probably, you're a star point guard for Alabama's basketball
09:21team.
09:21What are you doing with two pounds of weed in your house?
09:23Get it somewhere else.
09:24He's probably making seven figures, right?
09:26NIL-wise?
09:28Well, that's why he can afford two pounds of weed.
09:29That's why he can afford two pounds of weed.
09:31Generally, if you got two pounds of weed, it's to sell it.
09:34It's not to smoke it.
09:35Well, he don't need to sell it.
09:36He's making seven figures.
09:37That's why I'm so confused.
09:39Like, if it was just, he had a bag of weed on him.
09:41He had an eight.
09:42He had an ounce.
09:43I still remember when Robin Parris had two trash bags, and they said, what are you going
09:48to do?
09:48He said, I'm going to smoke it.
09:49And he didn't go to jail in Louisiana back when it was nowhere close to being legal.
09:54Right.
09:54So, Rob, the last one I wanted to ask you was, I think Acuff might be the prime example to
10:01this question.
10:02But who's like a star player that's not on a one seed, right?
10:07Like, everybody knows Boozer.
10:08But, like, one of these, I mean, this draft is loaded.
10:11Who's a player that could get a team to a Final Four?
10:15Okay.
10:16So, Acuff is the obvious one, right?
10:18And anyone that has seen Darius Acuff play loves watching him play.
10:21The dude is an absolute stud.
10:23He might not even be the best point guard in his pod.
10:26The five seed in that same region, Wisconsin, got a kid named Nick Boyd, who, there's a level
10:31of swagger this dude plays with guys, there's a level of confidence that he has that's just
10:36like, you don't realize that you are not the best player in the history of basketball
10:41when you watch him.
10:42He's got that kind of personality, and I love it.
10:44He doesn't realize, like, the stuff that he's doing.
10:47He's not, Wisconsin went into Michigan this year, and they beat Michigan at Michigan, which
10:50you're not supposed to do.
10:51And I don't think that Nick Boyd realized that he's not supposed to go into Michigan and
10:54win.
10:55I think his belief is we're the best team in the country.
10:57Of course, we're going to go in there and win, right?
10:59And he had 38 in a game against Illinois in the Big Ten tournament.
11:05Him and John Blackwell, his backcourt mate, has had games this year where they combined
11:08for 50 points, 10 assists, and no turnovers on the road at Illinois, on the road at Purdue,
11:13against Michigan State, at Michigan.
11:15Like, that team is built for big moments like this.
11:18And I think if we can get a Wisconsin-Arkansas second-round game, that's the one you got to
11:24circle.
11:24That's the second-round game that you cannot miss.
11:27Whatever you're doing, drop the kids off at school, go get them to their gymnastics
11:31practices, get whatever you're doing, just make sure you're in front of TV if Wisconsin
11:35or Arkansas play, because that is going to be a battle.
11:37If you like guard play, that is going to be a battle for the ages.
11:40It's one of those two.
11:42We talked about Arizona earlier, right?
11:44If you're going to be worried about Arizona, if there is a scare, it's going to be in that
11:50Sweet 16 game if they have to play one of Wisconsin or Arkansas.
11:52Because I think there's a very real chance that you get, like, a 39-point, eight-assist
11:58performance out of one of those two, Darius Aikov or Nick Boyd or whoever, and they can
12:02kick down Arizona.
12:03That's the one that I would be scared of if I was an Arizona fan.
12:05I look forward to taking the points in Arizona's Sweet 16 matchup.
12:09Rob, thank you for the time.
12:11We really appreciate it.
12:12Good luck.
12:12I know this is going to be crazy for you next couple weeks.
12:14Enjoy it.
12:15Yeah, always a pleasure, fellas.
12:16It's good to see you.
12:17Hey, I'm coming down to D.C.
12:18We're going to be at the Bet MGM on Thursday and Friday down there in National Harbor.
12:21Come down and hang out.
12:22We're going to be there, too.
12:24Honestly.
12:25Boom.
12:25There you go.
12:27First year on Beamage.
12:28Hold on.
12:28Are you going to be at the MGM Hotel or the Bet MGM over here by the baseball stadium?
12:35I'm going to be at the one in National Harbor down there in Austin Hill.
12:39You're going to be at the Sports Bowl.
12:40Okay, so we'll be there.
12:41Dude, we're doing our show from TAP Sports Bar.
12:44So we'll see you Thursday and Friday.
12:46No, we're going to be in the sports.
12:48We'll come over and hang out and grab a beverage with us.
12:51First one on Beamage, right?
12:52Always.
12:53First one on Beamage.
12:53All of them on me.
12:56At the casino where they take good care of us.
12:58Great to see you guys, fellas.
12:59Great to catch up.
13:00Thanks, Rob.
13:01Take care, dude.
