00:01Hey everyone, I'd like to welcome you guys to the very first video gameplay of Shattered Skies.
00:07You can find us on our website at PlayShatteredSkies.com
00:10My name is Adam Skidmore, with my online handle being ArtemisKnives
00:15and I'm design lead on the project Shattered Skies
00:17and this is a little short gameplay video for you guys.
00:20It's about 26 minutes long and I want to talk to you about the world
00:23and kind of what Shattered Skies is as a game.
00:26Before we get into it, you'll notice right now that we're kind of walking around
00:29on a little bit of a hillside right now.
00:31We've got some leaves falling from the trees and we've got kind of a beautiful environment going on.
00:36It's a perfect time to talk about our engine revamps
00:39and all our art and graphic overhauls that we've done.
00:42We now have a physically based renderer along with dynamic illumination, global illumination system
00:47and basically what that translates to is better lighting quality
00:51and makes the world more believable in the way that it lights.
00:55We've really optimized the hell out of the engine.
00:58We're recording this video on a GTX 970 NVIDIA video card.
01:02All our settings are set to the highest.
01:04We're basically running in the ultra quality settings right now
01:07and we have a 3770 processor for our hardware specs.
01:15Basically, the level of detail in this is so much more than our prior games.
01:21Basically, the environment, the trees, the grass, the bushes, foliage, 3D rocks,
01:25all the vegetation, it's all basically rendered flawlessly at a very high frame rate now
01:29without sacrificing frame rate for detail.
01:32So you'll see as we're walking over here,
01:35basically the environment detail is just at a whole new bar
01:39compared to prior titles that we've been working on.
01:42And so let's basically get into it
01:43and I'll kind of explain to you what's going on with the UI.
01:46And as you can see, we're running into fog here right now.
01:48So we're moving towards this crystal object right here
01:52and around it are going to be basically alien resources.
01:56They're actually meteor resources,
01:57but basically the whole premise of the game is that the moon was impacted by a meteor
02:02and it sent little shards of the meteor to rain down onto the planet.
02:07Humans at the time didn't know,
02:09but it was seeping down into the Earth's core
02:11and then it caused these crystal growths to happen.
02:14and where the crystals are is basically where the aliens started popping out
02:17and basically taking over humans
02:20and causing them to have growths and abnormalities and basically mutate.
02:25One of the things about the crafting system,
02:27and I'd like to talk to you now since I got the crafting menu open,
02:29is all these resources, they no longer take up backpack space.
02:33They're all super easy for you to use now.
02:35They don't drop on death.
02:37Anytime you find a crafting supply, you're going to want to keep them
02:39because they're not part of the main backpack here, as you can see.
02:42So I'm learning a recipe here.
02:44I've got a couple of the recipes in my backpack.
02:46Some recipes can be crafted anywhere in the world.
02:48Some require a specific crafting bench,
02:50which can be found in the safe zone or inside of, say, a gas station
02:53if it's got a garage or something like that.
02:56But we basically allow you to craft anywhere in the world now.
02:58You don't lose any of your crafting supplies
03:00and they're in their entirely own separate menu pouch, so to speak.
03:04We don't have them taking a backpack weight,
03:06so it should never be a question now of,
03:08oh, should I pick up this crafting material?
03:10Because maybe I'll need it later.
03:12Nice and simple, one-stop shop now.
03:15You pick up every crafting material you see.
03:16It's in its own pouch, and when you need to craft something, craft away.
03:20You don't have to sit there and pull items in and out of your global inventory
03:23or make sure you've got it in your backpack.
03:25Just if you find crafting materials now, pick them up.
03:28They're valuable, and you never know when you're going to need to use them,
03:31but they're no longer part of your main backpack management.
03:33What this ends up doing is it allows you to focus more on picking up
03:37what I consider to be fun items in the game,
03:39like weapons, attachments, ammunition,
03:42something like this right here, commando backpack.
03:45And then basically we've got another commando loot bag right here.
03:48And I'll show you that here in a second,
03:50but first we're going to step on over to this little water well right here,
03:53and we've got our empty flask.
03:54We filled it.
03:55Now it's dirty.
03:56We could choose to drink it, but you'll see right there we've got our stats on it,
04:01our health stat or hunger stat, stamina,
04:04and then we've got a little bit of description that you can toggle between.
04:06As you can see, I'm clicking those right there.
04:09And if, say, I wanted to purify that right now,
04:12I'd either need some sort of a purification tablet
04:16or I can actually use a campfire to essentially boil the water on.
04:21And so, you know, if I need to craft a campfire,
04:23what I can do is I can then open my crafting menu here,
04:27cruise on over into survival supplies,
04:29and then I've got a campfire there.
04:31Of course, ignore the fact that it was red.
04:33We do still have, of course, a couple UI glitches and things like that.
04:36This is an uncut video.
04:38This is just raw gameplay, but we've got our fire now.
04:41And as you can see, we've got a little deployment particle.
04:44So now when you're holding, say, medical supplies
04:47or deployable objects such as barricades and things,
04:50you now hold it in hand.
04:51And so you can see other players carrying it around.
04:53You know, if they're about to deploy a barricade and things like that.
04:56So I just purified the water on the fire.
04:58And then I drank it.
04:59Of course, items can be cooked on the fire as well.
05:01It's best to eat a cooked version of an item
05:03compared to an uncooked version.
05:05Cooking it basically just increases the stats of it.
05:07You know, you're going to get more food out of it,
05:09maybe more health, more liquids, depending on what it is.
05:13Oh, and so this canned peaches right here.
05:16I would be able to cook it,
05:18but we're having a little bit of a bug with cooking right now.
05:20And it's not wanting to display that option in the UI.
05:22I think it's something related to Flash.
05:24But you can cook, and that is an intended feature of the game.
05:28So let's open up this Commando loot bag really quick
05:30and kind of explain what the heck this is.
05:32So you'll see right now as I open it, boom,
05:36it pops up with four little items.
05:38And, you know, that's entirely on us to decide what it does.
05:41But basically it's a way for us to kind of give you
05:44a one-stop shop of multiple items.
05:46So, you know, say you're looting like, you know,
05:48maybe a gun, maybe you find some ammo,
05:50you find an off-tick, et cetera.
05:51But this is a one-stop shop where you know,
05:53say in that Commando loot bag,
05:54that you've essentially found a dead Commando
05:57and you've got some of his high-end gear.
05:59So here we've got a new armor plate.
06:01It's a great time for me to explain
06:02that we no longer have multiple armor plates
06:04or anything like that.
06:05One armor plate ends up covering
06:08all the armor for your character.
06:09Now it counts as both your head and chest.
06:12Of course, cosmetic items now are entirely based
06:15on the cosmetic menu.
06:16So armor in the game visually
06:19is not actually affecting anything.
06:20So let's go here into our attachment screen.
06:23This is our new attachments menu.
06:25And so you can see all the available optics,
06:27even if you don't have them.
06:28But we can see that this AK-12 rifle right here
06:31has three barrel attachments,
06:33even though we don't have them on us.
06:34And then we've attached that scope to the weapon.
06:37Of course, first-person accuracy,
06:40you're going to be penalized, technically speaking,
06:44for doing hip fire
06:45and shooting in, say, third person like I am now.
06:48And you can actually switch between shoulder to shoulder.
06:50The left and right camera gives you
06:51kind of a feel of exploration mode
06:53and putting the gun on your left or right shoulder
06:56to peek around corners and things of that nature.
06:59And back to the whole hip fire thing I was talking about,
07:02we do give you a nice little decrease
07:05in the amount of spread that the weapon has,
07:07as well as the amount of recoil and kick it has
07:09for aiming an iron sight like I'm doing right there.
07:12Of course, you can still spray and pray.
07:15You can hip fire and not use iron sights.
07:18But if you want that accuracy bonus,
07:20you're going to want to use iron sights.
07:21So I really only suggest hip fire from close range,
07:26you know, maybe no more than 15 meters away.
07:28And then, of course, if you're crouched or prone,
07:31you get an even better accuracy modifier
07:33and recoil reduction,
07:35making your gun more stable,
07:36making your bullets tighter,
07:38making it easier to hit the target
07:41that you're trying to hit.
07:42So here we are stepping into the city,
07:43and you can see there's kind of a little bit of particles,
07:45some newspapers blowing around.
07:48We're really, really happy with the environment
07:50that we've got now with this overgrowth and foliage
07:53and the frame rate that we can achieve
07:54with the amount of stuff we've packed into the world.
07:57So here's a backpack right here.
07:59We've actually got lots of different kind of backpacks now.
08:02They're all sorts of different colors.
08:04We've broken them into kind of two different classes right now
08:07as a military bag and a civilian bag,
08:09and they come in all sorts of different colors.
08:10I think that there's honestly about 15 of each of them.
08:13And each of them comes with a different amount
08:15of backpack slots.
08:18So each colored one,
08:20there is some variance to the bags now
08:22where you'll be finding a military pack,
08:24and it might be a brown one or a blue one
08:25or a red one or a green one,
08:27depending on the pattern.
08:29And each of them has actually their own
08:31little unique amount of bag slots.
08:33So it's going to be fun for players to find out
08:35which one is the trendiest that they like
08:37that also has the bag slots that they want.
08:40And so looting is a big part of the game.
08:43And so there we were just inside this little gas station
08:46picking up some common items.
08:47Of course, if you're in a military area,
08:49your odds of finding military-style loot
08:51is going to be much higher.
08:53Of course, the game has no monetization,
08:56no microtransactions,
08:58no way of spending any real money
09:01to gain any sort of advantage,
09:03not even cosmetically,
09:04not anything.
09:06So that's one of the great parts
09:08about the looting aspect
09:10is you've got to grind it yourself.
09:11You can't even actually trade
09:12any of your crafting materials
09:13since they are bound to your character.
09:15So like crafting materials
09:16that I was talking about earlier,
09:17not even being able to drop them at all,
09:21it means that you've got to grind
09:22all your own stuff.
09:24It makes it so that we've got
09:26a nice trade economy
09:26that's going to work for guns
09:28and things like that,
09:28but resources will be
09:30an individual progression.
09:32So here we are back
09:33in this little gas station here
09:35and we grab kind of a ham tin
09:37and some other things.
09:37We place that fire down there.
09:39The fire, of course,
09:40will heal you as well.
09:43It has multi-use.
09:44You can even cauterize a wound on it.
09:46So say you've been shot
09:47or an alien has attacked you
09:49and you're bleeding profusely,
09:51you can then walk over
09:53and burn yourself on the fire
09:54to actually relieve yourself
09:55and no longer bleed.
09:56So right here you can see
09:58that there's this cool little
09:59particle effect going on.
10:00It kind of looks like
10:01there's heat
10:01and it's got a bit of a distortion
10:03to the light and all that.
10:04This is the whole terraforming aspect
10:06of the game
10:07in that basically
10:08these crystal growths
10:09have been bursting up
10:10from the Earth's core
10:11and anywhere they are,
10:13basically the aliens
10:14have been popping up
10:15and humans are not safe
10:17wherever these are.
10:18It's our way of terraforming
10:20the planet
10:20and the planet basically
10:21being taken over
10:22and that's what creates
10:23these foggy zones
10:24and things like that
10:25that you saw in the start.
10:26It's like the area
10:28is particularly contaminated,
10:30so to speak
10:32with alien-ness.
10:35But it basically means
10:36that that area
10:37is becoming
10:38less civil for humans
10:41and much scarier
10:42because there's aliens
10:43roaming around.
10:44You can see all our interiors now
10:46and I want to discuss
10:47our little lighting right here.
10:48So this is part
10:49of our new global illumination.
10:51It can create light
10:52from outside
10:53where it will create
10:54this light in the doorways.
10:55See how this area
10:56is much more illuminated
10:57whereas that hallway
10:58was kind of dark
10:58and it creates
10:59this really cool
11:00much more realistic
11:02lighting effect
11:02where the way the light
11:04actually goes
11:05and bends around corners
11:06and illuminates
11:08the brightest at windows
11:09and then of course
11:11areas that without sun
11:13are going to be
11:14cast in shadow and dark
11:15but our shadows
11:16look much more realistic now
11:18and basically
11:19the detail of all our buildings
11:20all our buildings
11:21are now enterable
11:22they've all got interiors
11:23I want to say that
11:24100% of buildings
11:25are enterable with interiors
11:26but I know that can't be true
11:28I know that there's got to be one
11:29that got missed
11:29or something like that
11:30but we've been striving
11:31to make every single building
11:33enterable
11:34and on top of that
11:35we've tried to come in here
11:36with a wrecking ball
11:37for the most part
11:38in most of these buildings
11:38and just plow out walls
11:40make it so you can get up
11:41on the roofs
11:42we've got all sorts of
11:44little stairwells
11:46and things like that
11:46on the sides of these buildings
11:47that allow them
11:48to be climbed inside of
11:51we basically really want
11:52the world to just feel like
11:53it's a giant jungle gym
11:55it's of course ruined
11:56you know
11:57you've got crystals
11:58coming up everywhere
11:59you've got all this
11:59great overgrowth
12:00you can basically
12:01like I'm doing right here
12:02you could go AFK
12:03in this bush
12:04someone would walk by
12:05you know what
12:05it really creates
12:06this cool environment
12:07where it's like
12:07how many people
12:09with guns
12:10fully combat
12:11capable of killing
12:12each other
12:12can we really pack
12:13into a tight little space
12:15without them actually
12:15seeing each other
12:16meaning
12:17you know
12:18you might think
12:18you're in a little bit
12:19of a scuffle
12:19chasing some guy
12:20around here
12:21I mean
12:21because you know
12:22I mean you could
12:22lose them on a corner
12:23lose them through
12:23a couple of these
12:24bushes in a blink
12:25and have no idea
12:26where they are
12:27and so it's like
12:28really how many people
12:29could we really
12:30pack in here
12:30and have them
12:31not realize
12:32just how many other
12:33people are surrounding
12:34them
12:34I think it's going to
12:34make just some
12:35incredible shootouts
12:36because we've got
12:37all these nooks and
12:37crannies
12:38we've got scaffolding
12:38on the windows
12:39and you know
12:40everything's enterable
12:41you can see that
12:41this has got a
12:42collapsed roof right here
12:43and there's an apple
12:44spawned underneath there
12:45and you know
12:46just lots of
12:47lots of wreckage
12:48and ruin
12:48you know
12:49we tried to add
12:50a lot of verticality
12:52to the map
12:52you know
12:53it comes back to
12:53that whole jungle gym
12:54type feel
12:55where we want you
12:56to climb on things
12:57we want you to
12:57explore
12:58if you're able to
12:59climb up on the roof
13:00like this
13:01then basically
13:02when you climb up
13:03on the roof
13:03you know
13:04your odds of finding
13:05maybe something
13:05rarer is going to be
13:06there
13:06you know
13:07if you go out
13:08of your way
13:08the goal is that
13:10you're going to be
13:10rewarded for that
13:11in a sense
13:13so check out this
13:15effect that's
13:15happening right now
13:16this is kind of
13:16like the effect
13:17I was talking about
13:17with the hallways
13:18and our new
13:19global illumination
13:20but basically
13:21your eyes are going
13:22to adjust to the light
13:23and so you can see
13:24your eye adjusts
13:25as you go to look
13:26at the bright light
13:27and then you know
13:27your eyes will adjust
13:28and you'll look back
13:29inside
13:30and it ends up
13:31creating this very
13:32realistic lighting effect
13:33that we think
13:33is really cool
13:35and so
13:35I think the world
13:36is just gorgeous
13:37and you know
13:38as you can see
13:39we're playing with
13:40great frame rate
13:41on this 970 right now
13:42so really
13:43I mean
13:43as long as you have
13:44a decent computer
13:46and of course
13:47decent is a relative term
13:48you know
13:48but as long as you have
13:50a pretty good computer
13:51right now
13:51you should have
13:52no problems
13:53playing the game
13:53with a very playable
13:55frame rate
13:55and it should be able
13:56to look gorgeous
13:57and you know
13:58if you have a really
13:58high end system
13:59maybe you've got
14:00one of these new
14:00980 cards
14:01you know
14:02expect 100 plus
14:03frame rate
14:03as long as you know
14:04there's no weird
14:05glitches happening
14:08so yeah
14:09that's
14:11it's just looking
14:12great now
14:12so check out
14:13this interior
14:14and all that
14:15we've got kind of
14:16this nice effect
14:17of the god rays
14:18coming in through
14:19the windows
14:19I mean you saw
14:20there was like
14:21a little notebook
14:22page that flipped
14:23through the air
14:24a second ago
14:25we've got some
14:26just really cool
14:26particle effects
14:27just the level
14:28of detail now
14:29that we're able
14:29to achieve
14:30while not
14:31sacrificing frame rate
14:32is
14:33it's a remarkable
14:34increase compared
14:35to before
14:35I mean we can
14:36really pack
14:37a lot of detail
14:38into the game
14:39now with our
14:40engine
14:40with a lot
14:41of people
14:41seamlessly in the
14:42world
14:42without people
14:43loading and
14:44going through
14:44zone lines
14:45and transitioning
14:46and phasing
14:46in and out
14:48and so it can
14:49just be this
14:49nice open
14:50living breathing
14:50world where
14:52you know
14:52there's
14:52almost no rules
14:54when I say
14:55no rules
14:56we think of
14:57basically
14:58kind of our
14:59starting areas
15:00like a noob
15:00zone
15:01and then like
15:01this town
15:01would be
15:02considered
15:02what's like
15:03a lawful
15:04pvp area
15:05and then we've
15:06got an area
15:06of the map
15:07that we consider
15:08to be ground
15:08zero
15:08kind of like
15:09where the
15:09majority of
15:10the meteors
15:10ended up hitting
15:11and that's
15:11actually near
15:12our military
15:13base
15:13and our
15:13airport
15:14and stuff
15:14like that
15:14we consider
15:15that to be
15:15ground zero
15:16and that's
15:16kind of
15:16no man's
15:17land
15:18reputation
15:19is not
15:19recorded in
15:20that area
15:20meaning normally
15:21you know
15:21if you're a
15:22civilian
15:22and you open
15:23fire on another
15:23civilian or
15:24lawman
15:24you're going
15:25to be marked
15:25as an aggressor
15:26and then that
15:27player is going
15:28to be able to
15:28kill you
15:28because you're
15:29an aggressor
15:29or you'll be
15:30penalized
15:31or not necessarily
15:32penalized
15:32but you'll be
15:33heading down
15:33becoming a
15:34bandit
15:34if you're
15:34opening fire
15:35on civilians
15:36and other
15:37lawful characters
15:38however when you
15:39are in that
15:39fog zone
15:40in the high
15:41end military
15:41area
15:42it's no rules
15:43it's no rules
15:44no holds barred
15:45pvp
15:45of course
15:46nothing's stopping
15:47a lawman
15:47from putting a gun
15:48to another lawman
15:49out here
15:49and killing him
15:50but does he
15:51really want to
15:51take that
15:52reputation hit
15:53if he's
15:53enjoying role
15:54playing as a
15:55lawman
15:55and things of
15:56that nature
15:57we tried to
15:58make you know
15:59all our buildings
15:59very very
16:00explorable
16:00so here we are
16:01just wandering
16:02around and
16:02in a couple
16:03more buildings
16:03and you know
16:04what's interesting
16:05is this building
16:05actually outside
16:07has another
16:08ulterior entrance
16:09to it
16:11basically from
16:12climbing up
16:13on the windows
16:14however this area
16:15is too
16:15too scaffolded
16:16up so you
16:17can't actually
16:17go inside the
16:18windows
16:18which it's
16:19likely that
16:20we'll end up
16:21pulling some
16:21of the scaffolding
16:22off of this
16:22building
16:23I was thinking
16:23it was a
16:24different one
16:24but we've
16:27tried to like
16:27you know
16:28if you find
16:28something like
16:29say that
16:29that ambulance
16:30over there to
16:30the right
16:31you know
16:31you can climb
16:31up on top
16:32of the
16:33on top
16:33of the
16:34little overhang
16:35on the movie
16:35theater right there
16:36here's another
16:36little water well
16:37right here
16:37so we can fill
16:38that up
16:38this one ended
16:39up coming
16:40with clean water
16:40right here
16:41so this is a
16:41clean well
16:42and so then I
16:43can just drink
16:43it immediately
16:45no problems
16:49so we'll go
16:50continue our adventure
16:51exploring in the
16:52world right now
16:54but basically
16:56the environment
16:57is a huge part
16:58of these games
16:59and you know
16:59if it feels
16:59kind of bland
17:00it doesn't feel
17:01like so much
17:01of an apocalypse
17:02and so we've
17:02really tried to
17:03try to get
17:04capture that
17:05like eerie
17:05just abandoned
17:06world theme
17:07where basically
17:09yeah everything's
17:10overgrown
17:10you know
17:11the grass is
17:11just really
17:12kind of wild
17:12there's no yard
17:14maintenance crews
17:15coming through
17:16during the zombie
17:16apocalypse
17:17so you know
17:17lots of bushes
17:18are overgrown
17:19and things of
17:20that nature
17:20and it ends up
17:21creating these
17:22great little nooks
17:23and crannies
17:23for everybody
17:24to hide in
17:24and of course
17:25this is another
17:26roof that's
17:26accessible
17:27like really
17:28we've really
17:28tried to make
17:29every single
17:30place accessible
17:31in the game
17:32we really just
17:33want you to
17:34crawl all over
17:35it you know
17:36outsides of
17:37buildings like
17:37this building
17:38that I'm looking
17:38at right there
17:39to the right
17:39and left
17:40you can actually
17:41walk on little
17:41edges of it
17:42like you know
17:43we want it
17:44to be
17:44it is your
17:45jungle gym
17:46you know
17:47we want you
17:48to be able
17:48to climb up
17:49there
17:49we want you
17:49to hide
17:50there
17:50you know
17:50you might
17:51post up
17:51there
17:51with an
17:52assault rifle
17:52or a sniper
17:53rifle
17:53with you
17:53and your
17:53buddies
17:54and kind
17:55of play
17:55as a
17:55trapdoor
17:56spider
17:56and wait
17:56for people
17:57to come
17:57by
17:57or
17:57things like
17:58that
17:59so here
17:59inside this
18:00little garage
18:00right here
18:01this is actually
18:01the crafting
18:02bench
18:02so when I was
18:03talking about
18:03crafting earlier
18:04and it
18:04requiring a
18:04bench
18:05this iron
18:05bulwark
18:06right here
18:06see
18:06requires
18:06four
18:07mechanical
18:08for material
18:08parts
18:09so I just
18:10walk within
18:11that proximity
18:14open up my
18:14menu
18:15select it
18:15and of course
18:16since these
18:16materials never
18:17drop
18:17you could
18:18potentially
18:18collect
18:19hundreds of
18:20these materials
18:20and at the
18:21drop of a
18:22hat
18:22craft iron
18:23bulwarks
18:23whenever you
18:24need
18:24so this also
18:24requires level
18:2510
18:25so you can
18:26see that we
18:27actually have
18:27levels in the
18:28game as well
18:29now
18:29so some
18:30recipes are
18:30unlocked
18:31as you
18:32level up
18:32they require
18:33you to be
18:33a certain
18:33level
18:34other ones
18:34are just
18:35gotten from
18:36a vendor
18:36in town
18:37we have
18:37a token
18:38currency
18:38that we're
18:39using for
18:39players to
18:40unlock their
18:41cosmetic items
18:41and unlock
18:42blueprints
18:43and things
18:43like that
18:44so some
18:45are found
18:45in the world
18:46others are
18:46found in
18:47vendors in
18:47town
18:47but of
18:48course
18:48these vendors
18:48are only
18:49accepting
18:50in-game
18:50currency
18:50and once
18:51again
18:51you cannot
18:51translate
18:52cash
18:53into
18:53in-game
18:54currency
18:54there's
18:54no way
18:55to
18:56advance
18:56your
18:57character
18:57by spending
18:58money
18:59this is
19:00an old
19:00fashioned
19:00game
19:01in that
19:01sense
19:01you gotta
19:02grind
19:02it
19:02if you
19:03want
19:03if you
19:03want
19:03it
19:04spend
19:04the time
19:05and earn
19:05it
19:06we
19:07think
19:07that's
19:07a really
19:07fair
19:08play
19:08style
19:08because
19:09you
19:09know
19:09these
19:09types
19:09of
19:10games
19:10it
19:10is
19:10an
19:10apocalypse
19:11and
19:11you
19:11know
19:12may
19:12the
19:13strongest
19:15survivor
19:15win
19:15basically
19:17we don't
19:17feel like
19:18you should
19:18be able
19:18to
19:18actually
19:19spend
19:19money
19:19to
19:19gain
19:20an
19:20advantage
19:20over
19:21another
19:21player
