00:00On today's show...
00:03...Hugnacious Plugs.
00:05We're actually regarded as having one of the best plugs in the world.
00:08It is the most giant. How is it the best plug in the world?
00:11Why don't we all just agree on a plug and a voltage?
00:14And then maybe peace might happen.
00:17Financial freedom.
00:18I actually couldn't live without my husband's credit card.
00:21I'd hate that.
00:22I'm all for women that want to be independent. I just don't.
00:27And edible insects.
00:29I used to eat bugs.
00:32You can ask my mother.
00:33She was very concerned about it, but I turned out fine.
00:37As five hungry hosts go head-to-head for a tray of 20s.
00:41You're a little, like...
00:49It's the third day of the competition in Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire.
00:54Former home of US Air Force big band leader, Glenn Miller.
01:00And hoping to get her guests in the mood is tonight's host, Martina.
01:05Tonight, I think my guests are going to be impressed with my food, my presentation, and hopefully it will just
01:12be a really great night.
01:14The week got off to a flying start with American teaching assistant Michelle...
01:19Cheers.
01:21...bringing some transatlantic treats to the table.
01:24I hope my night set up that this is all about just having fun, getting to know new people, maybe
01:30making some new friends along the way.
01:32She served up a mix of doughnuts...
01:34Go.
01:36..and party games.
01:37Go!
01:38Go!
01:39As of right now, I think I'm in the top spot.
01:41Music was in the air on night too.
01:44Because we're having fun together.
01:47When host Dave brought his attitude of gratitude to proceedings.
01:52Anybody want to have nice meals together.
01:56Love it!
01:57Even if it's a little spicy.
02:00I think the atmosphere was incredible last night.
02:04I thought people really enjoyed the entertainment and it felt like a really warm night.
02:09Whilst his singing went down a storm, there wasn't much gratitude on show for his menu of experimental food effusion.
02:18I feel like this is the kind of dish a mom would make.
02:20She's had like a rough week and she needs to feed the kids.
02:23The main course was a bit sad, I'd say.
02:26There wasn't really any sauce or seasoning or rhyme or reason to it.
02:30It felt like a uni meal.
02:31The mug of cheesecake with a prosecco top sank without a trace.
02:37No, no, I don't like it.
02:38I have never, ever tasted anything like that cheesecake dish, ever.
02:45I've got rubbish in my bin that tastes better than that.
02:49And Dave's bread made it a hat-trick of horrors.
02:52I think maybe I've got the end bit. Maybe it's a bit chewy.
02:55I can get you some more if you want.
02:56I'm okay, thank you.
02:57The bread was very hard.
03:00Obviously it didn't rise.
03:01There was no fluff at all to it.
03:03It didn't taste nice either.
03:04I didn't think the bread tasted bad.
03:07It was just the fact that it didn't rise and it was flat and dense.
03:10I think there's a small chance that I could be out in front at the moment.
03:15There's zero chance of that.
03:17You're actually in last place with a somewhat generous 20 points.
03:21Nowhere near enough to overtake current leader Michelle, who is way out in front with 29.
03:28When I woke up this morning I did feel a little bit sad for Dave and I hope he didn't
03:32take it to heart.
03:33But obviously I can't sing and he definitely can't cook.
03:39Martina kick-starts her menu with dessert.
03:42Poached pears in red wine with yoghurt and pecans.
03:46I don't know if I've ever had poached pear before, so I'm very, very excited to try this.
03:52I'm not a massive fan of, you know, poached pears or, like, poached fruit desserts.
04:00Martina carefully cores her pears and then peels them up to a point.
04:05Michaela actually did say she does like a bit of fruit yesterday.
04:10Never really had poached pears before.
04:12The now almost skinless pears are put aside and it's on with the wine for poaching.
04:18In go sugar, cinnamon and star anise.
04:21Oh, it just smells beautiful, like a lovely massage oil.
04:25Pears bathed in massage oil. Yummy.
04:29A quick stir, then the main attraction.
04:31The pears are going in, guys.
04:34I'm hoping that the poaching of the pears is done in such a way that the red wine doesn't just
04:39cause carnage.
04:41No sign of any carnage yet.
04:43The pears come out of the red wine and Martina will serve with the yoghurt and pecans tonight.
04:50Perfect.
04:51On to the starter. Roasted butternut squash soup with bread.
04:56Oh!
04:57I feel this is a really warm Hartley soup and I think a lot of people like this.
05:04I love, love soup.
05:06And especially if a butternut, a roasted butternut squash made right, it's, it is, it's, it just goes down in
05:11the store.
05:12Soup, soup, isn't it? At least you haven't got a light to it.
05:14Well, hopefully not.
05:16A liberal splash of olive oil over the chopped squash.
05:19Mikaela will love it once she gets her gums around these.
05:24Then it's in to roast.
05:27Ooh, is Martina going to attempt to make her own bread?
05:31She is, kind of.
05:33I thought to myself, stay safe and get a packet mixture, but add your own flour, your milk, knead it,
05:42salt, pepper and hope for the best.
05:45If this bread isn't homemade, I'm definitely going to be quite disappointed and I'm definitely going to mark her down
05:52because I went through a lot of turmoil to make my bread.
05:55As did those who ate it.
05:57Martina needs her bread kit dough before adding a dusting of flour.
06:01A final brush of oil.
06:03And that's that.
06:06The now roasted squash goes into a blender with coconut milk along with a teapot of stock.
06:12A quick blitz.
06:15And...
06:16Ah!
06:17That is delightful.
06:19She'll reheat just before serving.
06:22So it's on to the main.
06:24Thai green chicken curry and red prawn curry with rice.
06:30I'm using good quality chicken, good quality prawns, fish sauces, so I think it's going to be a good dish.
06:38You could easily make that, whereas I set out on a journey to create something different.
06:43And as much as it didn't go quite as planned, I definitely think I achieved that.
06:47Time to let it go, I think, Dave.
06:49Martina simply dissolves shop-bought red curry paste into coconut milk, adds fish sauce, sugar and then gives it all
06:56a whisk.
06:56It smells really lovely.
07:00Yep.
07:01I'm feeling it.
07:03She'll add her prawns tonight.
07:05For the green curry, she chops veg, which she adds to her base of coconut milk and another shop-bought
07:12curry paste.
07:13I'm going to add all the lovely ingredients later and it's all going to be muah!
07:18The prep's done.
07:20Now I'm off to get dressed up and put some slap on.
07:23As Martina dashes upstairs for a quick change, her guests ponder the night ahead.
07:29I think she's going to be a very good host.
07:31I think the booze will be flowing like rivers.
07:37And I'm greatly looking forward to the night.
07:40I'm hoping Martina opens up a little bit.
07:42She mentioned things like being the Duchess of Cambridgeshire and various other things have been brought up and I'm quite
07:48intrigued really.
07:50This is going to be the best night of the week.
07:55First to arrive, food adventurer Dave.
07:59Hello. Hello.
08:01Come in, you're welcome.
08:02It did feel quite awkward arriving first tonight and greeting Martina.
08:06I think there was obviously a little bit of tension between us after some of the criticism of my beautiful
08:12bread.
08:13Wow, what's this?
08:14A Prosecco machine.
08:16Oh, wow. What's a Prosecco machine?
08:18Oh, Dave, you won't believe this.
08:19You can help yourself, my love.
08:21So, a Prosecco urn is an interesting thing. I've not encountered one before.
08:26Thanks.
08:27You're welcome.
08:28Next, and bringing the American razzle-dazzle, it's Michelle.
08:33Hello.
08:34How are you?
08:36Good, come in.
08:37Hey, I'm excited.
08:38Oh, what is that?
08:41Someone's excited.
08:42Where has this been all my life?
08:44Martina's little Prosecco, like, fountain thing.
08:47I liked it. Like, I might go and get one myself.
08:51I might come with you. Here's Shane.
08:54Hello.
08:55Hi.
08:55How are you?
08:57I'm very good, thank you. How are you doing?
08:59Yes, I'm very well, thank you.
09:01Love the suit, Shane.
09:02It looks very dapper.
09:03Thank you, thank you.
09:04I feel overdressed, but hopefully I'm not.
09:07And finally, it's Mikaela.
09:10Hi.
09:10Hello, come in.
09:13Lovely to see you.
09:14Lovely to see you.
09:16Oh, hello.
09:18How are you?
09:19I'm very well, nice to see you all again.
09:21You look lovely.
09:23Take a glass of Prosecco.
09:24It's a...
09:24You help yourself.
09:26There's your glass.
09:27Oh, wow.
09:30Cheers, guys.
09:31Thank you for coming.
09:33So, look at this.
09:37Isn't it magical?
09:40Deep breath, everyone.
09:45Whoa!
09:46I feel everybody loved the Prosecco urn.
09:50It just was a talking point.
09:55The pizzazz of the urn was very lacking.
09:59Nonsense!
10:01It was quite a depressing, deflating party urn.
10:05Philistine!
10:07Still to come.
10:09Perished pooches.
10:10I have a dead dog in my TV room.
10:13Is it stuffed?
10:14No, it's in a bag.
10:15It's in a bag?
10:17I did genuinely think she meant that a dog had died.
10:19She just didn't know what to do with it.
10:21And downbeat dancing.
10:23Martina said she'd show us some of her heritage.
10:26It's not my heritage, so why am I dancing?
10:36It's the third night of the competition in Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire.
10:40Cheers!
10:41Where sales director Martina is hoping her knight of top tie tucker will win her the £1,000 prize.
10:50In the kitchen, Martina heats up her soup.
10:53The almost homemade bread is sliced.
10:57The soup is poured.
10:59It's lovely and rich.
11:01And bingo!
11:02Roasted butternut squash soup and bread from a kit.
11:06This is the best butternut squash one of my guests has ever had.
11:12You're welcome.
11:13Tonight we have butternut squash soup and bread.
11:18It is vegetables, Mycola. How do you feel?
11:21It was just really thick.
11:24Not what I would consider to be a soup.
11:27Not really my thing.
11:29Pretty tasty.
11:30It's got a very homely vibe to it.
11:32Dave loved it.
11:34He loved the soup.
11:35He loved the bread.
11:35I'm not entirely sure he did.
11:37Butternut squash soup was pretty plain.
11:40It was a soup you might get in a school canteen at lunchtime.
11:44Simple, basic soup.
11:46I would say it's got less of a soup consistency.
11:50I think soup was a strong word for it.
11:53Closer to a gel.
11:54Ouch.
11:56Michelle, anything to add?
11:57Touch more seasoning.
11:58Like that's it.
11:59Yeah, touch more seasoning.
12:01But yeah, the texture is very lovely.
12:03Did you make the bread?
12:04Oh, here we go.
12:05Did you actually?
12:06Well, not from scratch.
12:08So I had a bit of a mixture and I did a bit of flour and seasoning.
12:12And I kneaded it and I put it in the fridge all night, Dave.
12:17Ah!
12:18So which bit didn't you make?
12:21I did all the hard work.
12:22Did you have to add the yeast or anything to it or is it pre-yeasted?
12:26No, pre-yeasted.
12:28But I added love, care and attention.
12:31So if you ever want bread-making lessons, you know who to call.
12:34Pretty disappointed by the fact that Martina wanted to offer me advice
12:37on how to make bread when she actually used the kit herself.
12:41Dave got absolutely roasted last night
12:44and I think maybe he had a bit of a vengeful spirit
12:49towards Martina tonight.
12:51Let's just move on, shall we?
12:53So Shane, did you ever have a pet?
12:55I bought my mother a dog a few years ago.
12:58So I spent the first few weeks with it.
13:00I taught it tricks, how to sit, roll over.
13:04Cute.
13:05Anyone else have a lovely fluffy dog story?
13:08I have a dead dog in my TV room.
13:10You've got a what?
13:11Of course you do.
13:12Is it stuffed?
13:13No, it's in a bag.
13:14It's in a bag.
13:15It's in a bag.
13:16It's in a bag.
13:17I did genuinely think she meant that a dog had died,
13:19she just didn't know what to do with it.
13:21It's not like an actual stuffed dead dog.
13:25What, is it not stuffed?
13:26It's the ashes, but it's not for like a morbid thing.
13:30I don't have a fascination with keeping him.
13:32There was a point tonight where I thought Mikaela genuinely had a dog's corpse in a bag in a box
13:40in her living room.
13:42I always said I'd take him back to where we used to live in London, but I don't want to
13:48go when it's raining so I've been waiting for a nice day.
13:50I'm glad we cleared that up.
13:52How are you feeling, Martina?
13:54I think the starters went really well.
13:57I think everyone was hungry from last night.
14:00To her Thai curries, Martina adds peas and the chopped veg.
14:04They are spicy, but not ridiculously spicy.
14:07Cooked chicken and then prawns go in.
14:11This is the amount of money I've spent, they'd better like it.
14:13A final stir of the pricey prawns and then the moment of truth with the rice.
14:20Yeah, not bad.
14:22Not bad indeed.
14:24Curries are poured into serving bowls.
14:26As they say in Thailand, this is beautiful.
14:28Or as they say in Cambridgeshire,
14:30Thai red and green curry with chicken, prawns and a dinky dome of rice.
14:35Oh, that's heavy.
14:38So, tonight's dinner is rice, king prawn, curry, red and green chicken.
14:43The words are right, they're just in the wrong order, but enjoy anyway!
14:47I actually did eat most of what was on my plate, not that I put a loss on.
14:52It doesn't taste a curry curry.
14:54It tastes like just different, but not curry.
14:57OK, Dave?
14:58How did you make the sauce?
15:02I used the Thai paste, but then I had coconut, garlic, reduced it all down.
15:09Then I put in fish sauce, sugar.
15:12I was quite disappointed.
15:14I thought when it came to the curry, there'd be a long story about how she'd mixed all these different
15:18ingredients together.
15:19But ultimately, I think it came down to a pre-bought paste.
15:22The sauce is good.
15:24Yeah, the rice is nice.
15:26Loving the red curry, very nice. Like, I get the texture, like, and the thickness of it is perfect.
15:33The green curry was definitely lacking in flavour.
15:36I love my rice cookout. I really enjoy it and I couldn't live without it. What is the one thing
15:42you couldn't live without?
15:43I couldn't live without my curling iron.
15:45Oh!
15:46Plain and simple. I couldn't live without my curling iron.
15:48I need a little bounce in my life. I need a little, like, boop, boop, boop, boop.
15:51One trip we took, I forgot to bring my adaptor. I get to Edinburgh, and this is before I lived
15:57here, I didn't have whatever your three-prone.
16:01Detraction thing is, like, monstrous plug.
16:04We're actually regarded as having one of the best plugs in the world.
16:07It is the most giant. How is it the best plug in the world?
16:10I'm a massive three-pin man. I think the UK plug standard is the best standard in the world. And
16:16I feel like a lot of people, even people who aren't from the UK, do agree with me.
16:21Three pins good, two pins bad.
16:23If the world could vote and they voted on England, I'd take that. But can we just all have the
16:30same?
16:30Yeah, I'll get that.
16:31So, we all keep, like, arguing, like, whose oil this is or who owns this territory. Why don't we all
16:38just first agree on a plug and a voltage and then go from there? And then maybe peace might happen.
16:45Well, it would certainly be a start. Anyone else attached to something weird?
16:49I actually couldn't live without my husband's credit card.
16:52Now there's a surprise.
16:54Do you think it has a high enough limit?
16:56I don't think it has a limit.
16:58I could probably survive a day without a credit card.
17:01I'm independent, which I really love, and I don't have to rely on anyone. Good for you.
17:06I'd hate that if I had to think my husband would open this credit card and go, what the hell,
17:10but maybe they don't because they might have lots of money.
17:13But, yeah, I love my independence. Good. I'm pleased you do. Thank you.
17:18Ah, awkward.
17:19I'm all for women that want to be independent. I just don't.
17:26I don't think my main course could have been improved any different. I think it was really well.
17:32Now I'm going to show you a little bit of my heritage.
17:35I love it.
17:39I had no idea that Martina was about to break out in Riverdance. No idea.
17:53I was like, OK, we're seeing kind of a new side to Martina now, and it was really good to
17:58kind of get in the groove.
18:06I can't believe it.
18:08I can't believe it. I need to read.
18:12Martina said she'd show us some of her heritage. It's not my heritage, so why am I dancing?
18:18I mean, it's a fair point.
18:22So you can do it!
18:24Wow.
18:29Yeah, I don't think Michael Flatley's got a lot to worry about.
18:32Good effort!
18:34After all that energy, time for dessert.
18:37Martina spoons out Greek yoghurt, a squeeze of honey, and on go the chilled pears before everything is drizzled in
18:45red wine sauce.
18:47Poached pears with yoghurt and red wine, everyone.
18:50Best dessert of the week. I can almost taste £1,000.
18:56Thank you, babe.
18:57Ooh!
18:57This is poached pear with Greek yoghurt and honey, with nuts and red wine sauce.
19:05I found it quite hard to eat and just not really that good, to be honest.
19:10Where did you come up with the idea for it?
19:12Once again, Dave's in with the question.
19:15I'm not really a chocolate person.
19:17It's like just a bit of a nice balance. It's good. I'll teach you.
19:22Just after your bread-making lesson.
19:24I like it. I feel like the flavours pair together quite well.
19:28Cha-ching!
19:29The pears were quite soggy.
19:31It was a bit of a weird combination.
19:34I did Irish dancing as a child, many moons ago.
19:38So, what did you do as a child?
19:40I used to do stage school.
19:42Oh!
19:42So, I got to do acting, singing and dancing.
19:45So, I felt quite at home with our little Irish jig earlier.
19:47Oh, did you? It was quite just fun.
19:48I used to eat bugs.
19:53And then I'd...
19:54What sort of bugs, darling?
19:56OK, so I had...
19:57Oh, just moths and ants.
19:59Nothing weird about that.
20:01Why did you start eating bugs?
20:04I was just...
20:05You know, I was just a kid.
20:07That's just the kind of thing kids do.
20:09Do they?
20:10It wasn't all bugs.
20:11I mean, I wouldn't never eat a spider.
20:14But, you know, ants, moths, maybe the occasional beetle.
20:18Just whatever was around.
20:19Because, you know, you'd play outside.
20:21Maybe you'd get a bit peckish.
20:22No!
20:23Oh, yeah, I ate bugs when I was a kid.
20:25You can ask my mother.
20:26It was...
20:27She was very concerned about it.
20:28But I turned out fine.
20:30Tonight was not better than my night.
20:32The dishes were quite plain.
20:34They were quite simple.
20:35And especially the packet.
20:37I still can't get over the fact that the bread was from a packet.
20:39You've hidden it well.
20:41My food was amazing.
20:43My dancing was amazing.
20:44I entertained.
20:46And I feel like I've won the £1,000.
20:49Let's have some scores.
20:50The starter was a bit too thick and unflavourful.
20:55Half of her main was good.
20:58Her dessert was maybe a bit cold and lacking.
21:02So, for that reason, tonight I'm giving Martina a six.
21:06The bread with the starter tonight was absolutely amazing.
21:10So much better than last night's.
21:12The main course, I surprised myself by how much I ate.
21:17The dessert was amazing.
21:18The entertainment was really good fun.
21:20So, tonight I'd like to give Martina an eight.
21:24Tonight's meal, it was lacking...
21:27The starter was lacking a little bit in seasoning.
21:29The main, I only liked, like, really one part of it.
21:33And the dessert was just not for me.
21:37So, I'm giving Martina a seven.
21:41The starter wasn't homemade bread.
21:44That definitely scores it down.
21:45The main was...
21:47It was nice, but nothing too exciting.
21:50And the dessert was just a little bit weird.
21:52So, for that reason, I'm giving Martina a six.
21:57All of which gives Martina a score of 27,
22:00putting her in second place.
