Yojimbo / Yōjinbō (1961) — Akira Kurosawa’s seminal jidaigeki (screenplay by Kurosawa, Ryūzō Kikushima, Hideo Oguni; cinematography by Kazuo Miyagawa; score by Masaru Satō) . In 1860, a nameless rōnin (Toshirō Mifune) arrives in a silk-and-sake town split by rival bosses Seibei (brothel/gambling) and Ushitora (with his lieutenant Unosuke, played by Tatsuya Nakadai, the gun-toting wild card) . The rōnin takes the name Sanjuro Kuwabatake, sells his services to both sides, and engineers a gang war—rescuing the farmer’s wife Nui (Yoko Tsukasa) and her family, surviving a beating when his scheme is uncovered, and returning for a final showdown against Unosuke’s revolver and Ushitora’s thugs .
