The Scent of Green Papaya (1993) — A Vietnamese-language drama (French–Vietnamese co-production) written and directed by Trần Anh Hùng (his feature debut), starring Trần Nữ Yên-Khê as adult Mùi (young Mùi: Lư Mẫn San) . Set in 1950s–60s Saigon, 10-year-old orphan Mùi becomes a servant in a once-wealthy merchant household run by the wife (mother) while the husband drifts through infidelities and absences; the grandmother upstairs withers as the family’s fortunes fade . A decade later, Mùi is sent to work for family friend Khuyên (Vương Hòa Hội), now a concert pianist engaged to a shallow fiancée. He notices Mùi’s quiet grace, begins teaching her to read and write, and breaks the engagement; in the final scene a visibly pregnant Mùi reads poetry to him .
