The Outfit (1973) — John Flynn’s lean, neo-noir crime film (script by Flynn, uncredited Walter Hill), adapted from Richard Stark’s Parker novel The Outfit (1963) . Out of prison, Earl Macklin (Robert Duvall) learns his brother was killed by Outfit hitmen for robbing one of their banks; with partner Jack Cody (Joe Don Baker) and girlfriend Bett (Karen Black), he demands $250,000 and then hits the syndicate’s operations when the boss Mailer (Robert Ryan) refuses . The crew (including Timothy Carey as Menner, Richard Jaeckel as Cherney, and Joanna Cassidy) stage a string of raids; when Bett is killed, they assault Mailer’s mansion, plant a bomb, kill Mailer, and escape by posing as medics .
