00:00In December of 2025, Pure Electric car sales in Europe jumped by 57%.
00:0757%.
00:08That is, I don't think we've ever seen that kind of growth before.
00:13And I believe that that's a sign of what's going to happen in 2026.
00:19Hello, my friends.
00:20Welcome to the channel.
00:21I'm Sam Evans, still watching The Electric Viking.
00:24EVs hit a record 28% market share.
00:2728% market share in Europe in December of 2025.
00:35453,000 plug-in vehicles were sold in December, which beat the previous record, which was set
00:42three years before, at 412,000.
00:47Of those 453,000 that were registered, 327,000 were EVs.
00:54So you can see plug-in hybrids, their sales increased by 34%, but EVs' sales increased
01:02by 57%.
01:05Hello, my friends.
01:06Welcome to the channel.
01:07I'm Sam Evans.
01:08Great to have you with us.
01:10Interesting sales figures here because, I mean, a lot of people have been saying in Europe,
01:16plug-in hybrid sales have been growing really quickly and EVs haven't.
01:19But, as you can see, that's actually not correct.
01:26Now, the other good news is that in December, petrol vehicles or gasoline-powered vehicles,
01:32their sales, they decreased by 18% versus December of the previous year.
01:38And diesel sales fell 23%.
01:40So gas fell 18%, diesel fell 23%.
01:45And diesel car sales now are almost eliminated from Europe.
01:48They have only 5% market share across all of Europe.
01:51I don't really see the point in manufacturing a vehicle for a market with 5% market share,
01:57which is declining.
01:58So I'm going to guess that's what most manufacturers are probably thinking to themselves.
02:02What's the point in bringing in any new diesel models?
02:05So diesel will die within the next 10 years in Europe, maybe even 5 years.
02:09So yeah, very, very soon.
02:11EVs rose 57%, though, to 28% market share.
02:16And plug-in hybrids have 11% market share.
02:19So if you put those two together, plug-in hybrids and EVs,
02:23then you're looking at 39% of the market.
02:26Four-year numbers.
02:27Interestingly, 2025, EV share was 20%.
02:31And plug-in hybrids percentage was 9%.
02:34So for the entire year, 20% for EVs, 9% for plug-in hybrids.
02:38In 2024, EV share was 15%.
02:43So they've gone from 15% to 20% market share.
02:46But as you can see, the trend is very different to the entire year.
02:50The trend in December was completely, in fact, very, very different
02:53in terms of market share, massively increasing.
02:56So the best-selling EVs in Europe in the month of December.
03:03Actually, the Tesla Model Y completely crushed everyone.
03:07Wasn't even close.
03:08In fact, it was so far ahead that, yeah, I'm not sure what happened.
03:13But apparently, the Tesla vehicles are dying in Europe.
03:16Sales are terrible.
03:17But then you look at December sales numbers, and you think,
03:20oh, OK, what's really going on?
03:23I don't know, it's sort of hard to take anyone seriously
03:27when they say stuff like this.
03:28And then you see these sales numbers.
03:29Number one, Model Y, 22,600 sales.
03:33Nearly double number two, which was the Renault 5.
03:37And that includes the Alpine A290 with 12,900 total deliveries.
03:42So 10,000 more for the Model Y than second-placed Renault 5.
03:47Renault 5 is a pretty cool car, by the way.
03:49Let's go to Elrock in third place, 12,400.
03:52Tesla Model 3 in fourth place, 12,000.
03:55So Tesla Model 3, if they'd sold another 600, 700,
04:02they'd sold only another 700, they would have been in second place.
04:04Not far away, really, from Model Y sales.
04:07And very, very close to second-placed Renault 5.
04:11In fifth place, Volkswagen ID.4, 10,340 deliveries.
04:16Next was the Volkswagen ID.3 in sixth place with 9,107 deliveries,
04:22followed by the Volkswagen ID.7, 8,900.
04:27Skoda Enyaq, 8,500.
04:29The BMW iX1, 8,200.
04:33Audi Q4 e-tron, 8,200.
04:36Audi Q6 e-tron, 7,900.
04:38Volvo EX30, 6,900.
04:41Ford Explorer EV, 6,000.
04:45If you're wondering about that car, it's essentially a Volkswagen vehicle.
04:49It's made, basically made by the Volkswagen Group.
04:52Next is the BMW i4 with 6,000 deliveries.
04:56The Kia EV3, 5,971.
04:59The BYD Dolphin Surf, which is the slightly stretched version of the BYD Seagull, 5,700.
05:06Volvo EX40, 5,330.
05:10And the best-selling BYD EV in terms of SUVs in the market was the BYD Seagull in 18th place
05:20with 5,200 deliveries.
05:23Now, the best-selling BYD period, though, in Europe was the BYD CLU, which is...
05:29They've got an EV version and a plug-in hybrid version.
05:32They sold 8,500 of the plug-in hybrid version, and they sold 850 of the electric version of
05:42the BYD CLU.
05:43So it's sort of interesting to see.
05:45BYD has tremendously increased its sales in Europe, but not of its EVs.
05:51It's tremendously increased its sales of plug-in hybrids, which are a bit cheaper in Europe
05:55because they don't face any tariffs.
05:57Oh, they do face a 10% tariff, but they don't face...
05:59Which is actually the same cost that Tesla faces with the Model 3 that it imports from
06:05China.
06:06But yeah, they face big tariffs.
06:09So it's about, I believe, an additional 18% on top of the 10%.
06:13So BYD is facing a 28% tariff on its EVs that it sells in Europe right now.
06:19As a result, you can see they're not really that competitively priced, and they're not selling
06:23as well as they are in other markets like Australia, for example.
06:28So yeah, that's the top best-selling EVs in December in Europe.
06:33I am, once again, I am a little surprised because there's a lot of negativity around Tesla sales
06:39in Europe.
06:39But when you look at these numbers here from December, that actually Tesla did quite well.
06:44One of the reasons is probably the Tesla Model Y standard.
06:49The Model Y standard is the base version of the Model Y.
06:52This Tesla Model Y standard is not really that compelling in the United States because it's
06:56missing too many things.
06:57But in Europe, actually, it's not missing all that stuff.
07:01And the base Model Y, which costs about €44,000, does get pretty good range.
07:08It's got 534 kilometers of range and doesn't miss out on as many features as the American
07:14version.
07:14So that's probably helping Tesla a little bit to continue its sales in Europe.
07:21Guys, what are your thoughts on this list of these EVs?
07:25Which of these would you consider?
07:26Let us know in the comments.
07:28Thanks for watching.
