00:00Europe's EV market has just exploded and the numbers coming out from last month, April
00:072026, they should have the most diehard EV sceptics that people are still saying, I
00:14mean millions of people are still saying EVs are just a fad, they're going to die.
00:18Those sceptics need to rethink their position.
00:22New vehicle registrations across Europe rose 7% in April to 1.15 million vehicles.
00:30The third consecutive month of growth.
00:32But the headline number barely scratches the surface, because underneath it, electric vehicle
00:38deliveries increased 38% compared to the same month last year.
00:44That's not a blip.
00:47That's a trend picking up some pretty damn serious momentum.
00:51Let's talk about what's driving it.
00:53Surprisingly, Volkswagen, Stellantis, and Chinese brands led by BYD, they all contributed
01:01affordable new models that Europeans are actually buying.
01:05Now imagine if there were no tariffs.
01:07The average tariffs on Chinese EVs are around 40% to 45%.
01:10Imagine if there weren't any.
01:13In Germany, Europe's biggest car market, EV sales increased 41%, fuelled partly by a new
01:20government subsidy.
01:22Germany tried and failed with the EV subsidies before, but this one appears to be working.
01:28Policy matters.
01:30When governments get incentives right, buyers respond and it works.
01:35On the Electric Viking website, I'll put a link in the description below.
01:39We have more articles about electric cars and battery technology than any other website that
01:44I'm aware of in the world.
01:45So check that out.
01:47Link is in the description.
01:50And there you'll find our videos and analysis and articles about everything going on in the
01:55EV world.
01:55Now, let's talk Tesla, because this is a massive turnaround.
02:02After a brutal 2025 in Europe, where sales collapsed amid the Elon Musk political backlash,
02:08Tesla posted a 47% increase in April.
02:12That's a remarkable recovery in a market where there are so many other choices now.
02:18The Model Y, which weighs around 1,980 kilos and offers up to 600 kilometers of range,
02:25in its long-range variant, or 680 kilometers of range in the long wheelbase version, is one
02:32of the most compelling EVs in the market in Europe.
02:36Whether the rebound sticks beyond one month will be interesting to watch.
02:40Who knows?
02:41What do you guys think?
02:41Let me know in the comments.
02:43On the hybrid side, deliveries also rose while petrol and diesel sales continued falling.
02:49Gas and diesel vehicle sales are falling quite quickly.
02:53This is the structural shift happening right in front of us.
02:56Batteries are taking over, and it's happening faster than the legacy automakers were planning
03:00for.
03:01People keep on messaging me saying, resale value, resale value.
03:04I'm worried about resale value with an EV.
03:06Well, maybe you should have a look at the resale value of cars in Norway and Sweden that are internal
03:11combustion.
03:12Have a look at how they're doing.
03:14Yeah, because that's where we're all heading.
03:16Chinese brands are carving out real territory in Europe, which also gives them breathing
03:22room from the brutal price war at home.
03:24And the truth is, the Chinese car market is suffering.
03:27Sales of cars, total car sales in China are way down versus last year.
03:33BWD and Geely remain top sellers in Europe.
03:35But the standout was Cherry, who posted an insane 322% increase, largely driven by demand
03:45for its Jayquo SUVs in the UK.
03:48The Jayquo 7, for reference, weighs about 1,760 kilos, has a range of around 530 kilometers
03:56in its FEV configurations.
03:58And the EV version is actually also selling really well, but it's priced competitively
04:04against all of its rivals.
04:05And that's why it's selling so well.
04:07British buyers are voting with their wallets.
04:10So are Australian buyers, by the way.
04:11Volvo made headlines, and not just for sales.
04:14Julio and Volvo struck a deal with the Trump administration that exempts it from a proposed
04:19US ban on connected vehicles tied to Chinese ownership.
04:24That news sent Volvo's shares up 10% in Stockholm in a single session.
04:29And this is a reminder that geopolitics are now inseparable from the EV story.
04:34One cautionary tale, though.
04:36Bloomberg Intelligence warned that rising energy costs linked to the Iran conflict could dent
04:42consumer confidence and threaten spending on big-ticket items like cars.
04:48That's actually what's happening in China right now.
04:50So while April's numbers are genuinely awesome, the macro environment is different.
04:57Less stuff is being sold worldwide this year.
05:00People are more worried about the future, worried about losing their jobs to AI particularly.
05:05But let's be clear.
05:0638% jump in EV sales across the entire continent is extraordinary.
05:12Germany up 41%.
05:13Tesla rebounding 47%.
05:15Cherry up 322%.
05:17Chinese brands are gaining real ground in Europe.
05:22Hybrids are growing.
05:23Petrol and diesel is shrinking.
05:26Europe's transition is accelerating, not stalling.
05:30And anyone who wrote it off after last year's slowdown needs to look at these numbers again.
