00:12having me on again appreciate dude we appreciate you uh i want to talk actual ball but it's hard
00:18to not start with yet another judge getting involved in college football and letting kids
00:25or young men that are in nfl training camps go back enter the transfer portal and go back to
00:31college what the hell is going on here it's crazy yeah it's it's absurd um i think i'm not surprised
00:41that some of this is happening and you know uh you mentioned uh lane being lane uh it's an example
00:48of
00:48also lane being lane uh in orchestrating some of the stuff specifically that louisiana case but
00:54you know people are always looking for edges they're going to try to push the limit uh sometimes
00:58go past the limit every opportunity they can and here's a situation uh in which that's happening
01:04and so it's i think frankly disappointing um that this is kind of where we're at like there's
01:11honestly not much that gets me like real fired up and this one it has just because it's still kind
01:17of
01:17and typical to what it should be and especially i mean like it just feels wild to me that anybody
01:25would want to willingly potentially leave the nfl to go back to college football that's just insane
01:31to think about um even a year ago that would have been insane to think about but the fact that
01:35this is now uh in play um is just wild and speaks to you i think where the sport is
01:40right now
01:41just like in the swordsman case there were a lot of people against it a lot of people fighting it
01:45and that's why he ended up having to just drop out and move on do you think you're going to
01:51have
01:51other schools or other conferences going uh against this one i do i definitely think it's possible now
01:58whether it rises to the level of what we saw uh with soarsby uh remains to be seen i think
02:04one of the
02:05i guess the differences here is that we're just on a very expedited timeline where you know we got
02:12games this weekend right and you know then well of course week one the following so like
02:17there's just a lot happening very fast like that swordsman case you know played out over time and
02:21you saw it kind of like take a little bit of time to get people as revved up as they
02:25were and then
02:26you know some of the lawsuits and stuff like that going back and forth ultimately played a big role in
02:30swordsman not playing so i'm kind of waiting to see if anybody comes out as forceful as people did in
02:37the swordsman situation like i can tell you privately a lot of people are complaining about
02:42it uh but we'll see if it's like you know there was the swordsman situation for instance like there
02:48was a big 12 ad who came out with his name attached to it with some some bad words about
02:52how mad he was
02:53like will that happen in the sec i'm not quite sure typically things are more behind the scenes in
02:59terms of disagreements and things like that but uh we'll see i mean certainly people are not thrilled
03:04uh that this is happening and especially the fact that it's happening at lsu of lane kiffin
03:10so speaking of lsu and lane kiffin i uh you wrote an article maybe it was last week about the

03:17expensive rosters in college football and it seems you know reading this article that there are six
03:24colleges that have kind of broken away and are spending more than anybody and it's lsu miami oregon
03:30usc texas and texas a and m um who's spending the most what are those schools doing differently
03:38than the rest like how much more egregious is like texas and texas a and m than michigan and ohio
03:45state
03:45or something yeah i mean i would say your your top two uh are lsu and miami uh miami of
03:54course has been
03:55very aggressive um and we wrote about in the story i don't to the best of my knowledge no one
04:01wrote about this last year and kind of flew under the radar but they had a more than 40 million
04:06dollar
04:06roster last year um and it's gone up since then right so they're way up there lsu is interesting
04:14because you know they were going to come in at probably a pretty good number and then i think
04:19lane getting there getting the base fired up uh having the ability to go out and get
04:25some top talent at the portal as you guys know he's the you know self-anointed portal king and
04:31they were very aggressive in going out and getting those guys and so when you look at just two of
04:38their their bigger additions sam levitt uh from arizona state and then jordan seaton from colorado
04:44just right there that's more than 10 million dollars just two guys and that's wild right but that when
04:51you have two guys making 10 million combined more than 10 million combined like your roster number
04:56is going to get pretty high so there are multiple people that we talked to that believe they're
05:01beyond the 50 million dollar mark uh at minimum they're definitely uh mid to high 40s and so the
05:08spending has just continued to explode i think there was a hope uh clearly a misguided hope that with the
05:16house settlement and the rev share that this was gonna bring some of these numbers down and in fact
05:22it's been the opposite they continue to explode and really does not seem to be much slowing them down
05:29i guess potentially if there's successfully passed federal legislation maybe that helps but as of right
05:36now we're just seeing these numbers go up and up and up and like there are teams that are not
05:40going
05:41to be very good this year that are going to spend 30 million plus on their roster uh which it
05:45would
05:45have been unthinkable a couple years ago it is that's crazy so they could be north of 50
05:53i can tell you this he better win in lsu then yeah so like was part of him leaving old
05:57miss to go to
05:58lsu was there some sort of like guarantee of like hey man we will spend the cash
06:05that is certainly one of the factors now i can tell you that old miss people had promised him
06:11before he left like hey we can guarantee x level for at least the next three years and you know
06:17almost is a smaller you know smaller fan base um less uh you know huge donors um relative to some
06:25of these other places and so it's a little bit harder for them but i'll tell you what i talked
06:29to
06:29somebody a different sec school uh for that story who was like i think almost is getting the best bang
06:34for their buck out of any program in the country like they get every last penny they can so there
06:38could be some of like we've tapped out what we're capable of doing here which i think is you know
06:43a
06:43relatively fair argument to make whereas lsu you know you guys know like when people are bad they're
06:49even like just not meeting expectations it can lead to well let's go spend big i want to win again
06:54and so
06:55i do think you're seeing some of that with lsu and if he wins big this year next year then
07:01that
07:01will keep rolling in if he does not win and they feel like wow we spent a lot of money
07:06didn't get
07:06much for it then sometimes you see the the money dry up and you know that's happened at places like
07:11florida state where the money spigots kind of been turned off because they don't believe uh in the
07:16program to maximize their dollars um gosh it's just all so fascinating what do you make we're
07:24talking with our friend john talty national uh college sports reporter for cbs sports i have
07:30heard this and i kind of find it hard to believe but part of me wonders if your reporting shows
07:35it's
07:35accurate if you look at the schools you say are really separating in nil is lsu oregon usc miami
07:45texas and texas a&m texas and texas and a&m are driven by oil money yeah miami and usc
07:51are driven
07:51by kind of la miami fancy people money oregon's got nike lsu's got oil louisiana oil chain soy beans
08:01seafood yeah whatever it's louisiana that's its own entity but big picture here that's only like
08:08what do you make of the divide now between big 10 rosters and sec rosters from a money perspective
08:15yeah i mean it's been interesting you know and some of the differences conference to conference so
08:21you know we basically did that project we pulled out the top spenders but then we also tried to put
08:27every single power four roster into a bucket of more than 40 30 to 39 20 to 29 below 20
08:35right and
08:36there is no one in the sec from all the people we talked to that is below 20 million dollars
08:42everyone will have a 20 million or more roster and really in the sec that number is around 25
08:48million the big 10 does have a few programs below 20 million and so you've got like a purdue for
08:54instance that's going to be below 20 million dollars this year where you really see the massive divide
08:59and this is where i think it's going to be really interesting over the next five years of college
09:02sports if this continues the acc and big 12 have numerous programs below 20 million and you look in
09:10the big 12 based on our reporting there's not a single program above 40 million there's one in the
09:1630 million plus range which is texas tech and it's a bunch of either 20s or below 20s and some
09:23of those
09:23programs are gonna be pretty good this year they're finding ways to get the most out of their dollars
09:27but just in general the the program that has doubled the amount of money to work with is probably
09:32going to be the more successful one and so it'll just be interesting to see if this continues
09:37and if these acc and big 10 programs especially on the higher end are able to continue to do this
09:43year after year like over time that's going to be a pretty big impact and you know you can see
09:48why
09:49some of these acc schools and big 12 schools like just it's going to be very hard for them to
09:53compete
09:54in this new world if you have a 10 million dollar roster and you're going up against a program that
09:59might have 45 to 50 million dollars on their roster john we we talked lately all we talk about is
10:05amount people making in college football and that's about it do they still have a damn gpa they
10:11got to maintain they're still going to school um so i mean some of these guys i think they're like
10:18uh who is it i think it might be uh lenora sellers who just i think has an internship that's
10:23it um
10:23so i mean you got some of that but yeah i mean that is the thing that's like forgotten about
10:28is like
10:28some of these guys like yeah they are still supposed to be going to to school and maintaining grades and
10:34um and all that stuff and like you know it's just there's also a certain point and i think it's
10:39starting to happen a little bit right now but a certain point like these kids are i mean they're
10:43used to being treated very well there's a lot of money poured into the programs like certain point
10:47people can make hey i'm already paying you three million dollars a year like i'm not paying for this
10:51other thing that you want you know and so we'll see if that starts to shift where it's greeted more
10:56and more like professionals like we pay you what you pay you but we're not like gonna have like an
11:00insane locker room for you the way we used to or we're not going to spend as much as we've
11:04been
11:04spending on the training table and things like that um i was i wish i was in school right now
11:10getting eight million dollars they wouldn't have to feed me i don't know that this information is
11:17public or you've obtained it who's the highest paid player in college football so there's a few that
11:25i would put in that range and what makes this stuff honestly tricky is like one everybody lies and so
11:32some people over and plate how much they make a lot of programs like to under inflate because nobody
11:37they don't want everybody knowing how much money they have so you got to give everything a little
11:41bit of a grain of salt and then the final caveat i'll add is like some guys are legitimately making
11:45money through nil deals like we have kind of like the funny money which is like boosters and you know
11:50hey
11:50we'll pay you to go to this one event we'll pay you 250 000 to put that there's other guys
11:55like
11:55an arch manning who have legitimate national nil deals so with all those caveats i would put jeremiah
12:02smith as number one um people believe he's in the eight figure range himself but he's also making
12:09legitimate real nil money because of who he is and his actual ability to generate money off his name
12:16image and likeness so he's at the very top arch is obviously making a lot
12:20but people around texas will tell you that he does not make that much directly from texas because
12:25he's able to make so much money on legitimate endorsements like they're not devoting much of
12:30any of their rev share money to arch so that's kind of interesting and then like the other one i
12:36would
12:36point to is darian mensa um he had to get out of a pretty expensive deal um at duke to
12:42go to miami so
12:43there was money paid up basically so he could buy himself out and go to miami he's gonna be right
12:48in
12:48that top range too those are the guys that i would point to first uh two i think freshman
12:54quarterbacks coming in they're supposed to be really good this kid faiz on brandon at tennessee
12:59and is the kid miava at usc what do we need to know about those fellas i like face on
13:06brandon a lot
13:07um actually got to spend some time with him last year just like really good kid really smart sharp a
13:15little quiet like kind of a lead by example kind of guy but like he's just built for this era
13:20like
13:20i think he handles himself super well the the people around tennessee love him and you know has
13:27the ability to be very good right off the bat i mean you always are going to have some of
13:32that
13:32potential for some freshman uh struggles but you know you got a guy like him and another one i'll
13:37shout out is uh at alabama keon russell um technically a sophomore because there's not really red shirts
13:42anymore if this five for five thing but has not played much at all um to this point would have
13:48been considered a red shirt freshman he's another one former five star guy very highly regarded they
13:53went with him over the veteran uh on the roster just the way tennessee did with faiz on brandon so
13:58those are two guys that like it might be a bit of a roller coaster but those two programs are
14:03very
14:03bullish on those guys ability to be special and you know one of those teams you can see potentially
14:09they can survive the early couple weeks you know get better and better as the season goes on
14:14um this is a last question for me john and this is purely self-serving you mentioned purdue is the
14:20only big 10 school not spending at least 20 mil where's maryland spending come in
14:26yeah there we have them in the above 20 million range um they have definitely stepped it up recently
14:33um and i think they have you giving them they're trying to compete you know if my my book does
14:43well
14:44locks might hit me up for a donation um but they've done a good job of trying to get more
14:51corporate
14:51sponsors and you know they have a whole new look at the like department led by this guy jim smith
14:56you
14:56guys know coming from the professional world and very smart sharp he's he follows instagram he's
15:02constantly posting on you know meet with donors and things like that so i follow he's really works
15:07hard yeah he's a great follow i recommend following him on instagram um it's kind of a fun look at
15:11what
15:11an ad job uh is like but they've done a really good job of significantly raising their money um you
15:18guys
15:18might remember had a book a couple years ago the price in which maryland was one of the programs that
15:22we focused on and they were very very low on nil and they're still not clearly not near the top
15:29top of
15:30the big 10 with usc ohio state oregon but they've come a long way at least kind of being in
15:35the mix
15:35um and you know week washington's good and some of the other guys they have you know maybe have a
15:39chance to surprise some people this year let's get in the mix dude i love locks i love jim smith
15:45i've
15:46gotten to know those guys i just you got to get to a bowl game and i think locks knows
15:51the pressure
15:51that's on them i don't what do you need to get to a bowl game seven wins i i think
15:57it's i mean six but
15:58i think that they probably need seven is what i would think and there's two critical games early
16:05on for maryland um you got uconn week two i think it's virginia tech week three those have to be
16:10wins
16:10in my opinion um especially year one of james franklin like you can't let that guy get going on
16:17you get an early win uh this is the year i think you have to catch them so yeah if
16:21they don't win
16:22those first two you're going to see the noise start to crank up and uh you know as you guys
16:26know
16:27maryland's a september team so it's good that they're probably getting those games early but
16:29uh they're gonna have to win those games to have a shot probably at seven um and then if you
16:35get hot
16:35get a little momentum you know maybe they can steal a game against a bigger opponent or two which
16:39you know historically has been a bit of a struggle for locks b i'm not sure it's good to be
16:43called a
16:43september team in the sport of football um yo john thank you for the time dude always get you early
