00:01Oh, God. You know that music gets me.
00:05Dammit, you know that music gets me.
00:08Oh, my God. Dog, it is time, baby.
00:11Selection Sunday yesterday.
00:13The brackets came out.
00:16It is my favorite time of the sports calendar.
00:20And I'm going to guess our next guest, his as well.
00:22Rob Doster joins us.
00:24Field of 68, the best place to go if you're looking to get all of your news
00:31for the tournament, college basketball, all year long.
00:34And they are serious about it.
00:36Rob, we appreciate you joining us.
00:38See, Kansas got their asses completely decapitated the last time they stepped foot.
00:42And I'm still out here trying to get you on the show.
00:44Now, I know UConn did too, but nobody's talking about that.
00:47But see, Rob, here we go.
00:48Let's go, baby.
00:50I'm back, man. I'm back.
00:52It's the best time of year.
00:53Although I do know, I've been told by my sources within the Houston community
00:59that I'm only back on because the Hogs won the SEC tournaments.
01:03And Clint was like, nah, we're not doing that today.
01:07Speaking of, Rob, boy, them boys looked good, didn't they?
01:11Oh, they did, man.
01:12Darius Hacoff is such a problem.
01:15I saw a stat the other day.
01:17He is the only player, the only freshman point guard in the history of college basketball
01:22that's had more games of 30 points and 10 assists than him is Trey Young,
01:25who averaged 30 points and 10 assists.
01:28So he's had an unbelievable year.
01:30And he is the guy.
01:30He's the reason why I'm looking at that West region.
01:35And I'm kind of saying to myself, you know, I don't know if it's a sewer for Arizona to get
01:39to the final.
01:40I don't know if this is a guarantee that Arizona is going to make a run there.
01:42I think Arizona is probably, at this point, the best team in college basketball.
01:47But I could see, I mean, I'm not going to bet against Darius Hacoff at this point.
01:52Like, he could go off at 37 and 9 assists.
01:54And I'd be like, yeah, okay, that makes sense.
01:55I could see that thing happening.
01:57So get excited, Clint.
01:58Have some fun with this one, man.
02:00Oh, you know, I will.
02:00By the way, we're going to be in Indy, just to let you know.
02:02Me and Ron will be in Indy.
02:04Yeah.
02:05We'll make our way.
02:06Let's go.
02:07Let's go.
02:08I don't know if any of our teams will be there with us, but we'll be there.
02:11We'll be there.
02:12No, listen, before.
02:13Hey, Ron, all I got to say is if Clint's going to be in Indy,
02:16I'll make sure to warn all of the Corps' light distributors that they better stock up.
02:19Man, they better look out, man.
02:21He kicked off the show doing that damn woo-poo, big suey to kick off.
02:25It's a home call, man.
02:26Good.
02:26Yes, called him on.
02:28Yeah, he did.
02:28But listen, like, before we kind of get into the field,
02:33this is the first time, and I've been watching this hardcore for,
02:37I don't know how many years.
02:38This is the first time, Rob, and I hope this is something for years to come
02:42and this becomes a thing, that I don't really remember anybody losing their mind
02:47for the teams that were on the bubble.
02:50Like, it just seemed like, all right, Miami of Ohio got in,
02:53and nobody really gave a rip about anybody else,
02:56and it just seemed like we were able to move right to the field
02:59and that it didn't seem like there was a lot of crying and complaining
03:03about the teams that got left off.
03:05And to be honest, when you start looking at the rip, go ahead.
03:08Because everyone stunk.
03:09Like, everyone that got left out was terrible.
03:11And half the teams that got in were bad, too.
03:13Like, NC State lost, I think, seven of their last nine games.
03:17They're dancing.
03:18That's when you lost four in a row to end the regular season.
03:21They lost in the second round of the ACC tournament.
03:23They're dancing.
03:24Anybody that got left out, like, you can't even make an argument.
03:27What is Auburn going to say?
03:28Yeah, we were one game over .500.
03:30We were 17 and 16.
03:32We should be dancing.
03:33Come on.
03:33So, Bruce Pearl, I'll tell you what, Bruce Pearl's got to get off TV
03:36because he's making it worse for his son sitting up there yelling
03:39and screaming about Auburn's supposed to be in the tournament, man.
03:41Like, he's making it harder for Steven than it needs to be.
03:44Hey, quickest way to get out of that hole is to stop digging now.
03:46That's the quickest way.
03:48Hey, Rob, we popped the show off once I got through calling them hogs, you know.
03:53But we popped the show off, and my co-host here in the great city of Houston,
03:58is he's belly aching over here because them Cougs,
04:02they're going to get to play a home game here at Toyota Center,
04:04a couple home games here at Toyota Center, man.
04:06You got any problem with that?
04:08I got none, and it's because Kelvin Sampson's out here playing chest, not checkers.
04:12Kelvin Sampson let Rice University be the host for the Houston Regional
04:16instead of Houston hosting it.
04:17Because if Houston was the host, they couldn't play in Houston.
04:20But since Rice is the host, Houston can play in Houston.
04:23Don't hate the player, hate the game, Ron.
04:25Don't hate the player, hate the game.
04:27I'm smoking hot if I'm Florida, Rob.
04:29I'm smoking hot if I'm Florida.
04:32Yeah, oh, I know.
04:33And it was the first time in a while, and this is a little inside baseball,
04:36but Todd Golden usually is very good about doing media appearances
04:41and coming on our show.
04:43And after the bracket came out, it was one of those ones where he was like,
04:46you know what, I'm going to wait until our required NCAA media availability.
04:52And my guess is because he didn't want to say something
04:53that was going to rile somebody up about having to play.
04:56A potential national championship game rematch in Houston's backyard
05:01in the Elite Eight.
05:02That's a tough draw.
05:04You work all year to be the one seed, and they could have sent their asses
05:08anywhere.
05:08But they're the two seed in Houston because Texas Southern is the host city.
05:15Or Rice or whatever school that Kelvin has snuck in to be the host city.
05:19Listen, you talked about the West region.
05:21I'm with you.
05:22Arizona, they seem to have as many weapons as anybody.
05:25I mean, hell, the player of the year in the conference,
05:28the toughest conference in basketball, is not even their leading scorer on the team.
05:32And Bradley, they've got a lot of weapons.
05:34But which region do you look and appears to be the toughest one in your eyes?
05:40I think it's probably the East, right?
05:43Like, not only do you have a ridiculous array of Hall of Fame coaches, right?
05:47You have the best team in the country in Duke out there.
05:51And you have the team in St. John's who, Ron, you might want to earmuster.
05:54You might not want to hear this.
05:55But who I think is going to end up getting to the Sweet 16.
05:58And I think that they are the worst possible matchup for Duke when it comes to the way that
06:03they play, the size that they have.
06:05They've got a big fellow named Zuby Ejiofor that can actually match up with Cam Boozer
06:09in terms of strength, in terms of quickness, in terms of agility on the perimeter.
06:14Like, he is the one guy in the sport that can do all of the things that Cam Boozer can
06:18do
06:18and maybe, maybe can kind of make that be a little bit of a difficult matchup.
06:22So, if you're looking for a team that can give Duke a fight, I think the St. John's,
06:26they can find a way to be able to pick him off there.
06:28And at the other end of the bracket, you've still got Dan Hurley in UConn.
06:31You've still got Tom Izzo in Michigan State.
06:35So, there's a lot in that East.
06:37It's going to be really interesting to see how it plays out.
06:39I'm going to be in D.C. for the regionals, and I'm just sitting here crossing my fingers
06:42hoping we get St. John's, Duke, and UConn, Michigan State in the Sweet 16.
06:47If we can get that with me in attendance, I'm going to be happy, man.
06:51I'll be satisfied if that's what we can pull off.
06:53Well, let's go from the horses to the dogs.
06:56Now, there's always a Cinderella.
06:57There's always one that, maybe not always, but there's one that can make a little bit of noise.
07:02Who's your favorite Cinderella in this bracket?
07:05You know, I don't know if we're going to see one.
07:07I think that we're at a point where, with the way that we're able to have retention,
07:12and what I mean by that is, the guys that normally go pro, think about it 10 years ago, right?
07:1710 years ago, if you can get on a summer league roster, or you can get an exhibit 10 contract
07:22in the NBA,
07:23you're probably gone and going to go try to make that 50 grand, right?
07:26Because if you're a pro athlete, Clint, you know this, man.
07:28You have, what, like a 10-year window of tops?
07:30If you have 10 years to make money as a professional athlete, then you've had a very good athletic career.
07:37And those guys would leave because they would cut a year into their window of being able to make money
07:41off their physical capabilities.
07:43You can always go back to school and get your degree, right?
07:44But you can only make money playing sports for so long.
07:47And now it's, I mean, we got Yaxo Lindenburg coming back to school when he's got a chance to be
07:52a top 20 pick.
07:53And 10 years ago, we had guys leaving if they were one of the top 100 players on any NBA
07:57draft board.
07:59And I think that is why it's more difficult now for Cinderella's.
08:02Because it used to be the advantage was, yeah, those guys are more talented,
08:05but they're 18-year-old freshmen or 19-year-old sophomores, right?
08:08So you had the adults, the fifth-year seniors at the mid-majors playing a bunch of really talented kids.
08:13Now, at the high major level, you're not playing kids anymore.
08:17You're playing like fourth- or fifth-year seniors that are pros.
08:20So it's the adults playing the adults, but the guys at the big schools are just having to be more
08:24talented.
08:24So I don't know if we're going to see a team like a 12-seam make a run to the
08:28Elite Eight for a while
08:29until this thing kind of figures itself out.
08:31But I will tell you this, I wouldn't want to be Texas Tech facing Akron.
08:35That Akron team is really, really good.
08:37They got a little point guard named Shannon Scott who, I don't know if you guys saw the shot that
08:41he hit
08:41to win the MAAC tournament title, but it was like a step-back 33-footer.
08:45They are really, really good.
08:47I think South Florida can beat Louisville and has a chance against Michigan State.
08:53They got a point guard named Wes Enos who's having just 17 games at D2 transfer.
08:57They got the American Player of the Year in Isaiah Nelson at the five,
09:01and they got some really talented wings.
09:02Their head coach, Brian Hodgson, had a whole bunch of high major guys at Arkansas State last year,
09:07and he ended up going to South Florida and brought half that roster with him.
09:10So they're a dangerous team.
09:12If you want to go just a little bit deeper, keep an eye on Hofstra against Alabama.
09:19Alabama's second-best guard was arrested today because he had a pound of weed in his house,
09:24which is probably not what you want to be doing on the day after Selection Sunday.
09:27I didn't think you'd get arrested for that anymore, right?
09:29Yeah, I guess you can.
09:31It's Alabama, man.
09:32I don't know what's going on down there.
09:33Maybe it was an Auburn fan that called a date on him.
09:36But I think Hofstra, they got a couple guards.
09:39This kid named Preston Edmead, and then they got a little guard named Cruz Davis
09:43who, like, both of those guys can go out and get you 30 on any given night.
09:46We know Alabama doesn't like playing very much defense.
09:49So if those guys get hot on the right night against Alabama,
09:52those threes don't go down, Hofstra can pick somebody off.
09:55In that region, Texas Tech, obviously, no JT topping.
09:58So if there's one team outside those top 12 seeds that might have a chance
10:02to be able to get to the second weekend, I think it's Hofstra.
10:04Rob, real quick, as I know you're a busy man in this time of year,
10:09who's your final four,
10:10and what player do you think we're going to be talking about
10:13at the end of this tournament?
10:15Okay, so my final four, I've been going back and forth
10:18on what my fourth team is going to be, the team coming out of the Houston region.
10:21But I got Duke, Michigan, and Arizona.
10:23I think those are going to be shooings.
10:24I don't know if they're really going to be tested all that much beforehand.
10:27I think I'm going with Illinois coming out of the South.
10:33Me too.
10:34Yeah, I think that they're going to figure this thing out.
10:36They're so good offensively.
10:38They got size to match up with people.
10:39They can get high from three.
10:41And Keaton Wigwood seems interesting.
10:43I think, though, I will say I wouldn't be surprised to see Darius Acuff go nuts.
10:48And he just seems like the kind of guy, correct me if I'm wrong, Clint,
10:51that when the lights get brightest, he ends up showing up
10:54and having kind of a star turn here.
10:56So I would not be surprised if he went out here
10:58and like in the first four games of the tournament
10:59carries him to the final four, averaging like going on the Steph Curry kind of a run.
11:04I wouldn't be surprised if that happened.
11:06The guy that I think has the most on the line is UConn's Braylon Mullins.
11:10He's a guy that came in with kind of the hype of being a potential top ten pick
11:14and hasn't really lived up to that potential yet.
11:17Getting out of the Big East, playing in a time when it's a little less physical
11:22in the tournament than it is when you play in Big East play,
11:25that might be able to get him going.
11:26I think he's got a chance to maybe change the way that some people view him
11:29as a potential prospect right now.
11:31No correction on the Hogs, first of all.
11:34That was a hell of a take by you right there, Rob.
11:37Take of the segment, no doubt.
11:39But I do need you and Ron.
11:41I teach you boys a little something about how this thing works.
11:43Man, U of H is winning the South.
11:46You might be right, man.
11:47I mean, hey, Rob, if you want anybody to look at that field of 68,
11:50you want anybody to click on that field of 68, hey, man,
11:52Houston's winning that South, H-Town.
11:54They got no excuse.
11:56No damage.
11:56It's revenge.
11:57Hey, man, go.
11:58It's revenge season, Clint.
11:59It's revenge season.
12:00They're getting back on Florida.
12:01They're getting their get back.
12:02I feel you, man.
12:03I feel you.
12:03Hey, man, go get your little girl, man.
12:05We appreciate you coming on and tell the family I said hello
12:08and we'll see you down the road somewhere, brother.
12:11Hey, Clint, they're going to be in Indianapolis,
12:13so my son wants to play you one-on-one.
12:15Come on, let me get loose.
12:17I'm going to start stretching right now.
12:19All right, man.
12:19Appreciate you guys.
12:20All right, there you go.
12:21That's Rob Doster.
12:22Field of 68, seriously, they are every night, every night,
12:26and they're going to take it up even more as the tournament starts.
12:29They had a really good selection Sunday.
12:32Bracket breakdown yesterday online.
12:34You can check them out at Field of 68.
12:38Nobody covers college basketball.
12:41Nobody covers the tournament better than they do.
12:43Shout out to Rob for joining us.
12:45All right, coming up as we continue, Tyler,
12:49Tyler, I just want you to stop being so damn stubborn.
12:55I really do.
12:56I really would like you to stop being so damn stubborn.
12:59You, I'm telling you, if you just had an open mind.
13:02I like it.
13:02I'm telling you.
