The head of the International Maritime Organization says naval escorts cannot fully guarantee the safety of ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

00:00The head of the International Maritime Organization, IMO, says naval escorts through the Strait of Hormuz cannot fully guarantee the
00:08safety of ships using the waterway.
00:10Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez told the Financial Times that military protection is not a long-term or sustainable solution for
00:19reopening the strait.
00:22He warned that shipping has become collateral damage in the conflict, with growing concerns that crews on stranded vessels in
00:29the Gulf could run out of food and supplies.
00:32Dominguez also urged shipping companies not to sail through the area, saying they should not put seafarers or vessels at
00:39risk.
00:40His comments come as U.S. President Donald Trump criticized Western allies for refusing to send warships to escort oil
00:47tankers through the strait.
00:49The IMO Council is set to hold a meeting in London to address the impact on shipping and crews.
00:55The Strait of Hormuz, which handles about 20 percent of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies, remains largely closed,
01:02driving up energy prices and raising inflation concerns.
