00:00Sentence structure is important in English because it helps us clearly communicate our ideas to others.
00:07It's like arranging the puzzle pieces correctly to create a complete picture.
00:12If you don't put the pieces together correctly, the message or what you're trying to say might be unclear or
00:20confusing to the person trying to understand it.
00:23So in this lesson, you will learn the most common simple sentence patterns in English.
00:31First, let's talk about different parts of a sentence.
00:35Many sentences in English contain a subject, a verb, and an object.
00:41The subject is the person or thing performing an action.
00:46A verb is the action or state being described.
00:51And the object is the person or thing that receives the action of the verb.
00:58For example, David likes apples.
01:01David is the subject.
01:03This sentence is about David.
01:07Likes is the action.
01:09It's the verb.
01:10And the object is apples.
01:13Another example, she plays football.
01:17We have the subject, verb.
01:19Football is the object.
01:21It is the thing receiving the action.
01:25Football is being played by the girl.
01:30Jason eats pizza.
01:32Mary reads books.
01:35And in all of these examples, we follow the most common sentence pattern, which is subject plus verb plus object.
01:44So we're going to look at more practice sentences.
01:48The chef cooks pasta.
01:51Dad is driving a car.
01:55The child eats bananas.
01:58The boy draws pictures.
02:01I encourage you to practice writing some sentences using this pattern.
02:07Now let's talk about some other common sentence patterns.
02:11Some sentences are very simple.
02:14They just have a subject and a verb.
02:17For example, the children are playing.
02:21The children is the subject.
02:23Are playing is the verb in the present continuous tense.
02:28Mom is baking.
02:30The girl ran.
02:33The girl ran.
02:34Here we have the subject, the girl, and the verb ran in the past simple tense.
02:41Another common sentence pattern is subject plus verb plus adjective.
02:47For example, the garden is big.
02:52We are describing the subject using an adjective.
02:57Jill is beautiful.
03:00The students are late.
03:03In all of these examples, the adjective is describing a characteristic of the subject.
03:12Another common sentence pattern is subject plus verb plus adverb.
03:18In the previous example, we used adjectives to describe more characteristics of the subject.
03:25But with adverbs, we provide more detail about the verb or the action.
03:31For example, the woman sings beautifully.
03:35Beautifully is describing how the woman sings.
03:40It's describing the verb.
03:43We're not describing the woman.
03:45We're describing how she sings.
03:48How she performs the action.
03:51Ben talks loudly.
03:53Grandpa eats quickly.
03:56Again, we're describing the verb with this adverb.
04:01How grandpa eats.
04:04Another common sentence pattern is subject plus verb plus noun.
04:10For example, the man is a farmer.
04:15Here we have the subject, the man, we have the verb to be, and we have a noun, farmer.
04:23And this noun provides more information about the subject.
04:28Oftentimes, with this sentence pattern, we use the verb to be.
04:34Another example, they are friends.
04:38Bob is an uncle.
04:41Now, something that might be confusing to you is what's the difference between the subject-verb-object pattern and subject
04:51-verb-noun pattern.
04:53So, in an SVO, or subject-verb-object sentence, the verb is an action that the subject is doing onto
05:02the object.
05:03The object is receiving the action.
05:06For example, the girl painted a picture.
05:10Joe built a treehouse.
05:13And yes, picture is a noun, and treehouse is a noun.
05:19But this still follows the subject-verb-object pattern because the object receives the action of the subject.
05:29In an SVN sentence pattern, subject-verb-noun, the verb often connects the subject to additional information about the subject
05:41itself, usually describing or renaming the subject.
05:47For example, the girl became a painter.
05:51Bob was a builder.
05:54Painter and builder are both nouns that describe the subject.
05:59The noun and the subject are the same.
06:03The girl becomes the painter, and Joe, in the past, was a builder.
06:08So, now it's time for our quiz.
06:11I'm going to read 10 sentences in total, and you have to identify the sentence pattern.
06:18We have subject-verb-object, subject-verb, subject-verb-adjective, subject-verb-adverb, and subject-verb-noun.
06:30Let's begin.
06:32The rabbit hops quickly.
06:35The teacher is kind.
06:38The artist paints a picture.
06:43The fish swims gracefully.
06:47He reads a novel.
06:51The garden is beautiful.
06:55She whispers softly.
06:58The musician plays the guitar.
07:01The babies are napping.
07:05He is a firefighter.
07:17So, let's identify these together.
07:20Number one is subject-verb-adverb.
07:24The rabbit is the subject.
07:26Hops is the verb.
07:28Quickly is the adverb.
07:30Number two is subject-verb-adjective.
07:34The teacher is the subject, is the verb to be, and kind is the adjective that describes the teacher.
07:43Number three follows the subject-verb-object pattern.
07:48The artist is the subject.
07:50The verb is paint.
07:53And a picture is the object that receives the action.
07:58Number four is subject-verb-adverb.
08:01The fish is the subject.
08:04Swims is the verb.
08:06Gracefully is the adverb.
08:08Number five follows the subject-verb-object pattern.
08:12He is the subject.
08:14Reads is the verb.
08:16A novel is the object receiving the action of breeding.
08:20Number six follows the subject-verb-adjective pattern.
08:24The garden is the subject.
08:26The verb to be is, and beautiful is the adjective.
08:31Number seven follows the subject-verb-adverb pattern.
08:36She is the subject.
08:37Whispers is the verb.
08:40Softly is the adverb.
08:42Number eight follows subject-verb-object.
08:45The musician is the subject.
08:48Plays is the verb.
08:50The guitar is the object.
08:52Number nine follows the subject-verb pattern.
08:57The babies is the subject.
08:59Our napping is the verb.
09:02And finally, number ten follows the subject-verb-noun pattern.
09:08He is the subject.
09:10We have the verb to be, is, and firefighter is the noun.
09:15It's providing more information about the subject.
09:20So let me know in the comment section how many you identified correctly out of ten.
