Northeast drying out and experiencing fall-like weather after flooding rain

Unseasonably chilly weather is moving in to the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic after extreme flooding earlier this week.

00:00Our top story takes us into southwest Connecticut.

00:02We continue to track just how devastating Sunday's historic flooding was.

00:06Six to ten inches of rain fell in the area in just a few hours leading to the deadly flooding.

00:11As we move forward, we do have a stretch of dry weather through this area.

00:16And we need a break in the action here after

00:18that pretty horrifying event that led to severe flooding.

00:22A lot of the time people don't associate scenes like this with southwest Connecticut,

00:26but certainly nobody's immune and we got into it in a big way.

00:29Parts of Long Island also faced some nasty storms.

00:32Right now we have some showers that are drifting from north to south,

00:34north-northwest to south-southeast across parts of the Finger Lakes

00:37and also into parts of the Adirondacks around an upper-level low-pressure system

00:41that is spinning over sections of eastern Canada.

00:45But again, this is a feature on the map.

00:46You can kind of trace the center of circulation somewhere northwest of Montreal

00:50and we have high pressure off to the west.

00:52So generally these are working in tandem with one another to drive some colder Canadian air

00:57from up near the Hudson Bay all the way down into the northeastern and midwestern U.S. here.

01:02So we're looking good.

01:03If you like cooler air, and I think most of us like to be comfortable this time of the year.

01:07So overall, as we take a look at the current temperatures,

01:09we're only in the 60s, low 60s at that in New England,

01:14at least in Burlington, mid-60s into Portland and into Boston, Massachusetts.

01:18And nobody's all that warm.

01:20We're only at 73 degrees down into Virginia Beach right now.

01:23So the chillier air at night and pleasantly cool weather in the afternoons

01:27will continue to win out in these areas here over the next few days through Thursday.

01:31Tonight to tomorrow morning, specifically unseasonably cool air.

01:35Some will challenge record lows and specifically West Virginia

01:40has the greatest likelihood of seeing true record-breaking low temperatures tonight.

01:44These are the record lowest temps for any August 21st in the historical database.

01:49Some of these areas go back over a century

01:51and we're looking at a record breaker by three degrees.

01:53Coldest August 21st tomorrow in the books in Charleston, West Virginia.

01:57Parkersburg, we expect to break the record by a full five degrees.

02:00Five degrees colder than the previous chilliest August 21st from 1940.

02:05Pretty impressive stuff.

02:06And widespread showers are going to stay to the north.

02:09We may see a little swarm of this into the Adirondacks.

02:12Otherwise, it pivots up into Maine.

02:14Not many of these will survive as far south as Interstate 80.

02:17Better shot into Boston Tuesday night.

02:19Wednesday, the cooler air.

02:21And then Wednesday afternoon, the showers will blossom once again.

02:24And Thursday morning, there will be one more round of near-record chilly weather.

02:29Parkersburg again on track for, in this case, a tie for the record low for August 22nd.

02:35And in Charleston, West Virginia, and in Jackson, Kentucky,

02:37will be within a degree of the record lows there.

02:41But overall, cool air wins out.

02:42And then we'll just slowly stair-step it up.

02:44A subtle warming trend over the next few afternoons, with dry weather winning out.
