00:05So it's been three weeks, just over, since we launched Sea of Thieves, right?
00:10Quite an intense time, I think, for the studio.
00:12Yeah, I think so. I think it's a point at where, you know, we've launched this game, this place we've
00:17always wanted to be,
00:17but now it's a time to see how are players interacting with their content, what are some of the top
00:21feedback points,
00:22and then how does that affect their plans going forward, right?
00:25Indeed, yeah, and what we want to talk about today is our plans moving forward, right?
00:28So, you know, we've heard a lot of everyone asking, like, what are your plans for content?
00:32How do you plan to grow the game?
00:34And, you know, in the last couple of weeks since launch, since we kind of had our week of launch,
00:38where it was all just make sure it's stable, make sure it's working as we expect,
00:43it's then been, okay, what's the top feedback points, like you say?
00:45How are people playing? How does that feed into our content plans moving forward?
00:49Yeah, I mean, this is it, right? I mean, we've always had, I mean, of course, as we're building a
00:52game,
00:52we've got a view of how we want to take the game forward.
00:55But I think we're in this different world now where we have this huge audience that's playing our game,
01:00and they've got different player types, they're playing the game in different ways,
01:03and, you know, we've had our view on how we wanted to take this game forward,
01:07but I think now it's about working with the community to bring the right things in at the right time.
01:11So when we're looking at our plans, in terms of bringing stuff into our content plans,
01:16there's a few filters we put on things, right?
01:18You know, when we look at, like, new ways to play for players,
01:20that's a way we want to grow and update the game.
01:23Like, we always want to give kind of new goals, new rewards.
01:26Yeah, more kind of incentives to kind of go and have these adventures in the world.
01:30I think that's important as well.
01:31Yeah.
01:31And I guess ways to enrich the world.
01:34Yeah.
01:34So while you're out there having these adventures,
01:36there's more things that can engage you and surprise you
01:39while you're out there having these awesome voyages.
01:41Yeah.
01:41And we always want to kind of bring players together in interesting ways as well, right?
01:46We're always trying to encourage those different kind of player encounters.
01:48That's right.
01:49And then, and ultimately, I think just overall,
01:52broaden the kind of the journey to Pirate Legends.
01:55So the way that you can become a legend and stuff, right?
01:57So giving different options, different ways to kind of progress on that journey.
02:01And then from Pirate Legends as well, add, like, broaden that journey to beyond, right?
02:06Exactly.
02:06So that's how we kind of select stuff that goes onto our roadmap.
02:09And then I think as important as that is also the cadence
02:12in which we plan to kind of update the game and give players new things to do.
02:16And really, we can divide that into two sections, I guess.
02:21One of those is weekly events.
02:22I mean, we've always kind of talked about that idea that Sea of Thieves is an ever-changing place.
02:26And I think this is where these events come in,
02:28which is week on week changing the things you can go and accomplish in the game
02:32and having these, like, challenges to go and accomplish
02:34and ways to showcase the new content that we're adding to the game.
02:37I think that's what's so important about this consistent rhythm of events that we add to the game.
02:42And then alongside those, which we're always going to give players, like, new goals and rewards,
02:46like you say, introduce new mechanics and stuff,
02:47and we'll touch on the details of those in a bit, I think,
02:50is these kind of larger content updates, right?
02:53And so the first of those in our plan is the Hungering Deep that we're bringing in May to players.
03:01So the Hungering Deep introduces a new AI threat to Sea of Thieves, right?
03:07And what we're trying to do here, though, above just introducing that AI threat,
03:11we want to try and encourage players to interact in different ways, right?
03:15And so trying to bring crews together around this thing.
03:19That's right. I mean, this is a new AI threat that can threaten you
03:23while you're out there in the world having these adventures,
03:26but at the same time we want to showcase in a cool and interesting way.
03:29So when this new AI threat is added to the world, it comes with a new item,
03:34it comes with a new wafer that could bring crews together and bring players together,
03:40and also new things to go and achieve and new things to go and unlock.
03:43But again, reflective of their approach is that when we introduce something like this,
03:47beyond that it becomes a permanent fixture in the world,
03:49but it's showcased in a really cool and interesting way first.
03:53Yeah, we're giving players a goal that they've got to go and kind of work with other crews
03:56to kind of almost uncover this threat in the world, right?
04:00And then there are some other tools that come with that,
04:03that help with communication with other crews and stuff, right?
04:07That, yeah, I think just gives players something,
04:10it's a different way to play really around this, right?
04:12And it'll be a timed kind of event that this will be present for.
04:16There'll be some cool stuff we're going to do around it a little bit before,
04:19a little bit of teasing around it and stuff,
04:20there's going to be some fun stuff to look out for there.
04:23But then, yeah, that is now present in the world,
04:25once that kind of event ends,
04:27everything we've introduced there is now also just there to enrich the world.
04:30Those items, those mechanics,
04:32plus this new AI threat in the world is now just a policy of things.
04:34Yes, everyone's going to have the value when they go and play the game.
04:37Yeah, and then we transition to our weekly events strategy
04:42before we kind of get towards the next content update.
04:45It's about now doing weekly events in Sea of Thieves.
04:48And there's many different ways we want to kind of do events, right?
04:52Some is introducing new mechanics to the world in a cool way
04:56that really kind of maximizes the value rate
04:57and gets as many people using it and understanding it's arrived.
05:00Yeah, that's right.
05:01Some is perhaps introducing a new way to play, right?
05:05So, like, within an existing trading company,
05:06you could be adding a completely new way to play for players,
05:10you know, to help enrich that journey towards legend.
05:13And some is just reusing cool things in the world
05:16or the world we've already got
05:17or some of the mechanics we've already got, right?
05:19We've got this beautiful world to explore.
05:21And arguably, there's not enough reasons and motivation
05:23to really go out and explore.
05:25And people find these amazing underwater caverns
05:27or underwater ruins or hidden caves and stuff.
05:31And, you know, it's really fun to go and find that.
05:33But then it's like you kind of feel like you should be getting a reward
05:35for going there, right?
05:37So, introducing, like, a hidden treasures event
05:40where, like, an NPC will tell you, you know,
05:42maybe they've lost some stuff in the world
05:44or someone's stolen it.
05:45You've got to go out and find it.
05:46And it gives you that real reason to explore the world,
05:50find these treasures.
05:51Yeah, maybe bring areas of the game
05:53that haven't been into play really yet.
05:54Like, we've got this beautiful underwater world
05:57and, like you say, there's the reefs
05:59and there's those little rock structures below the waves.
06:01And I think bringing those areas of the game into play more,
06:05I think that's going to be our focus going forward as well.
06:07Yeah.
06:07And so, with these events, like I think you said,
06:10there will be rewards.
06:12There'll be custom rewards, timed things,
06:13that if you go and do them during this time period,
06:15you'll get exclusive stuff, right, for players.
06:18And, like, when you're doing events,
06:21you'll get rewards that help you progress
06:22within those existing environments too.
06:24So, this is, you know, if you've been working through
06:27the Merchant Alliance or whatever for ages,
06:29but you want to progress quicker in that,
06:31like, by going and doing events
06:32that are kind of separate from it,
06:33we also want to help you progress in the,
06:35just for your path towards it.
06:36I think that's right.
06:37And you're going to be doing it along the way, right?
06:38You could be out there, you know,
06:40on Gold Hoard of Vorgies, on Merchant Vorgies,
06:41but, you know, you've got these events in your mind as well
06:43that you want to seek and get progress in.
06:45Yeah.
06:45So, it's more things that kind of enrich the journey that you're on.
06:48Yeah.
06:48And so, that's just an example of how we would use our existing world, right?
06:52But then if we were to introduce new mechanics
06:54and one of our favourite ones that we're looking at right at the moment
06:57and we're working on is Cursed Cannibals, right?
07:00And so, for us, introducing these into the world
07:03is just going to add a ton of variety to every session.
07:06Well, this is right.
07:06I mean, we've already got a series of mechanics in the game
07:08that around resource gathering,
07:10there's obviously the simple things like the barrels on the Ardennes,
07:13we've got the barrels that float in the water,
07:14there's shipwrecks.
07:16There's kind of, there's that little goal right now
07:18to go out there and resource gather
07:19for the good of the ship and for the good of the crew.
07:21I think any variety we add there is going to enrich that value,
07:24which means that when you come across another ship,
07:27you're going to know less about what they have.
07:29I think adding more variety into the encounters between players,
07:32whether that's through cooperation or conflict,
07:34I think that's going to bring a hell of a lot of value to the game.
07:37You know, what's great about the weekly events
07:39is that it's a great way for us to announce the content
07:42rather than just doing a set of patch notes.
07:44We're announcing it through the world, right?
07:46We're announcing it by saying that it's around an NPC,
07:49it's around a new way to play,
07:51it's around a new goal to go and achieve.
07:53So all of our players know that we're adding content to the game
07:55in a really cool way rather than just saying,
07:57we've just added this thing, go find it.
08:00Another way that we want to reuse existing mechanics
08:02in cool ways for weekly events
08:04is something like Skeleton Thones
08:06is another thing that we're looking at internally,
08:08which is adding a bunch of thrones around the world, right?
08:11Like in really hard-to-reach places
08:13that the skeletons are placed there
08:14because they like to sit at the top of a...
08:16Of course they do, of course they do.
08:17...surveying what they believe is their kingdom.
08:19Kings of the world.
08:20Yeah.
08:21But just having an event there
08:23where we introduce this in the world
08:24and now you've got to really just go and explore,
08:26find these things in the world
08:27and then figure out how you're going to get up there, right?
08:29And go and sit in their thrones, take a selfie.
08:31But generally, that's the kind of stuff that we want to do
08:37when we're reusing existing mechanics.
08:39Definitely.
08:40This is one of my favourites.
08:41I just love the fact that we're going to add these Skeleton Thrones
08:44and just finding them, seeing them up there on a high peak,
08:47spotting them with your spyglass
08:48and actually getting to it
08:49is almost a reward in and of itself
08:51but then actually rewarding it with something tangible.
08:54So you're getting up there and you're getting a...
08:56It's a cool screenshot moment
08:57but we're going to give you cool rewards in the game
08:59for being inventive and using the, you know,
09:01finding yourself at Cannons in new and interesting ways.
09:03Yeah.
09:04That's what we can do in our game
09:05because there is so much variety with the tools that we already have
09:09even without then going and adding the new content
09:11and bringing that stuff in.
09:12So our weekly events are going to be a mix of that stuff.
09:15But each time it's going to be something new.
09:17It's going to help you kind of progress on your journey to legend.
09:20It's going to give you new rewards.
09:22And I think these events that we want to run weekly,
09:24these are a way that we're going to be enriching the world week on week
09:27and getting that rhythm of these consistent updates.
09:29where players are, you know,
09:30hopefully always looking forward to what we're adding each week.
09:33But ultimately these are building up to these larger content drops, right?
09:37Yeah, absolutely.
09:38And so we've talked about the hungering deep
09:40in as much detail as we can.
09:43And then the next one that we're heading towards is cursed sails, right?
09:46Alluding a little bit to what's in there.
09:48Yeah.
09:48And this is another new AI threat that we're adding, right?
09:51This is a new thing that can engage you and your crew
09:54while you're out there having these adventures.
09:55Yeah.
09:55Quite different as well to what's in the hungering.
09:57Yeah, I think hopefully a little bit unexpected.
09:59I think that's why we want to be a little bit more mysterious
10:01around what that entails exactly.
10:03Yeah.
10:03And there's also a new way to play for players
10:06introducing a new ship type for players to play on.
10:08That's right, yeah.
10:09A new way for crews of different sizes
10:12to be able to have a slightly different experience
10:14and have more variety of just being out there
10:16and just seeing another different ship type out there.
10:18Yeah, yeah.
10:19And obviously alongside that it will bring
10:21kind of new mechanics, new features.
10:23That's right.
10:23Just alongside that that wrap it
10:24and new rewards, new cosmetics, et cetera, for players.
10:28And then as we head towards the third one
10:30which is Forsaken Shores,
10:32again alluding to what might be coming in that way.
10:34Yeah, I mean we've talked about enriching the world
10:36but I think this is a new area to explore
10:40and we don't just want to add more of the same.
10:42This is something a little bit different
10:43and we want this to feel much more perilous.
10:46So when you're going on a voyage into this new area
10:49you really feel like you're taking on these extra odds
10:52and it's going to be a new type of adventure
10:54that you can go and have.
10:55Yeah.
10:56Alongside this more perilous kind of part of the world
10:59and we're also planning on introducing
11:00a new AI threat alongside that
11:02that's very much themed to that part of the world.
11:05Again, very different to what we're bringing in beforehand.
11:09So really trying to add that difference,
11:11that variety to the threats
11:13that you're going to encounter out there in the world.
11:15Yeah, more of that fantastical
11:17that we love so much on Steam.
11:18Exactly, yeah.
11:19And so that takes us kind of through summer
11:20and then as we go head into fall and winter
11:22we plan three more major updates
11:25during the rest of the calendar year
11:26and all the while doing weekly events in between.
11:29And I think that another piece
11:30that's important for people to understand
11:32is that that's no extra cost when we add these.
11:34So our content updates, the weekly events and everything
11:36they're all available to all players
11:39because we never wanted to do anything to separate players
11:41and give some people content
11:42that they can play with only them and then others.
11:45So that's never been our intent.
11:46Absolutely.
11:46This is the start of the journey.
11:48So yeah, I'll come aboard.
11:49Yeah.
11:50The game is going to continue to grow
11:52and be enriched from this point onwards.
11:54Yeah, yeah.
11:55And it's really exciting.
11:56Like it really is to be now
11:58through our Insider program,
12:00through the Alphas,
12:00through the Betas,
12:01through Launch
12:01and now we're looking at how we grow
12:03the game from this point on
12:04and it's always been our plan all along
12:06to grow and evolve Sea of Thieves,
12:08to take feedback, to listen
12:10and you know,
12:11we are everywhere in terms of listening
12:13and kind of hearing what people are saying.
12:16Yeah, and I think that's the,
12:17it is a privilege
12:19and like absolutely,
12:20there's all these kind of inputs
12:21whether it's,
12:22you know,
12:23I've got this addiction to Reddit now
12:24and I'll read in our internal forums,
12:26the tweets that we get
12:27from people playing our game.
12:28I think all of this
12:29is a source for information
12:30and players should expect that,
12:32you know,
12:33when there's a keen kind of appetite
12:36for things in the game,
12:37of course,
12:37we're going to want to like
12:38build content around those features
12:40and just do so in a Sea of Thieves way.
12:42Well, at the same time,
12:43you know,
12:43we're going to do things unexpected.
12:45We're going to do things that,
12:47when we announce them,
12:48they're going to think,
12:48I can't believe they actually did that.
12:50I think that's the kind of balance
12:51that we want
12:52where it's a mix of content
12:53that's, you know,
12:55it's really cool,
12:56it's really obviously
12:57going to enrich the world
12:58but also stuff
12:58that's really going to surprise
12:59and delight their players.
13:00I think there's going to be a real mix
13:01but, you know,
13:02we're going to be consistently,
13:03just constantly getting
13:04that communication from their players
13:06no matter what the format
13:07and this is their chance now
13:09to, you know,
13:10to do what's always been their plan
13:12which is to have this
13:12close relationship with players
13:14as we continue to build out
13:15the world of Sea of Thieves.
13:17Yeah.
13:17So, I think that's it.
13:18Like, I think we've discussed
13:19what our plans are now
13:21and we look forward to questions,
13:23feedback and everything else
13:24on all of the different
13:24kind of channels and way
13:25that Mike talks about.
13:27So, yeah,
13:28thanks very much for listening
13:30and we'll see you out on the seas.
13:36Thank you very much for watching.
13:38If you want to stay up to date
13:39with everything Sea of Thieves
13:41then subscribe to our channel
13:42and click that little ship spell
13:43for all those notifications.
13:45Cheers.
13:46Don't worry, El.
13:47I'll just wait here.
13:51I'm not doing much anyway.
13:54A couple of good videos there
13:55if you want to watch.
