00:34we thought we'd just show you some cool things

00:39and are close to their final designs
00:41that a lot of backers are going to get
00:42get an update on the production
00:44and then see some new cool things
00:46New characters
00:49So we've been working on a lot of the physical rewards
00:51that people have signed up for
00:53including a cool t-shirt
00:54done by Rex Crowell from Knights and Bikes fame
00:56and Tearaway and LittleBigPlanet
00:58It's an awesome artist, has this cool new looking shirt
01:00It's obviously going to be CG'd on our bodies
01:02We have a new poster from Scott Campbell

01:05A lot of the game takes place around the Psychonauts headquarters
01:07So it's going to be Sasha and Mia and Coach and Truman
01:10and some new characters
01:12Old friends and new
01:13New friends
01:14And a black velvet painting from Nathan Bagel Stapley
01:17Which is the first time he ever painted on black velvet
01:20He had to learn how to do it, he did not know how to do it
01:22Uh, yeah, so I'm all about black velvet right now
01:25It turns out you have to wash the velvet for you to love it
01:28Oh, interesting
01:29I'm a big black velvet fan
01:31And I've seen it and it's cool and I want to steal it
01:33but I think a backer's going to get it
01:34Someone gets the original and then there'll be prints for other people
01:38And Peter Chan
01:39That one's actually going to be a piece of concept art for the game
01:41We're going to pick one of the nice pieces of concept art
01:43and someone will get the original and then we'll make the rest into nice posters
01:46Mmm, that is some art
01:48We have a more final look of our Raz figurine that we're doing for the backers

01:56So those are all going into production and they'll be done as soon as we can
01:59And we'll get those out to backers as soon as we can

02:03Talk about the game
02:03How's the game going?
02:04Uh, game's going really well
02:06We showed off First Playable in the last big update
02:09Do people know what First Playable is?
02:15First Playable is like the first time you can play the game and say I played Psychonauts 2
02:24It's sort of like on the pass, no pass
02:25It's like it's a good version of the game as opposed to a big pile of mess
02:28Which is what we had up until then
02:30And now we're working through production
02:33We've got five full level teams
02:34We're working on brains, we're working on more of the hub
02:35We're working on gameplay systems, we're working on powers, we're working on all kinds of crazy stuff
02:39And we know a lot more about not only kind of the size and the scope of the game we're
02:44going to make
02:44But how long it takes us to make that and how long it's going to take us to make that
02:47good
02:48And that's all really good news
02:50The less good news is because of that we now know that it is not going to be done in
02:542018

03:05But we don't really want to say anything until we can get a firm date for people

03:18But the good news is, you know, we want to give it the time to make it something that we

03:23And that fans love
03:24And that sort of continues the legacy of 2nd and 1 in a real meaningful and special way
03:28Yeah, and the game is obviously making great progress
03:30And we don't want to release it before it is great
03:33So that's what we're going to do
03:34And now we can look at actual stuff from the game
03:36Yeah, we're going to show some of the new characters
03:38One of the nicest things about working on Psychonauts 2
03:41Is, you know, Psychonauts 1 took place in a little camp
03:43And it was such a small slice of that world
03:45And this is the first time we're sort of going out into the larger world
03:47And there's so much new stuff to make
03:50Including, because the holidays are all about
03:52Family
03:53Family
03:54Raz's family
03:55Raz's family was alluded to in some vaults in the first game
03:58Yeah, there was, well I mean his dad shows up
04:00His dad was obviously a major part of Psychonauts 1
04:02And in one of the dads, one of the vaults
04:04There was a picture of all of Raz's family
04:06Yeah, the Aquatos
04:07Doing their big high wire tricks
04:08Yeah
04:09They were famous for
04:09But we got the chance to work with Scott again
04:13To sort of bring these characters to life
04:15Starting from that little tiny sketch in the vault
04:17Oh my goodness
04:18When was the last time we talked to Scott?
04:20Where'd that, his beard's just getting huge
04:26And I feel like, in my mind I'm like
04:27Oh, I can't wait to work with those shapes again
04:29I can't wait to do that with that renewed strength
04:32That I've built through the years
04:34I feel like, really excited to revisit it
04:37This is the stuff I'm getting
04:38I was always really excited to get back to
04:39Because in the first game we did develop
04:41A lot of his family history
04:43And why it leads to him having special powers
04:45And weaknesses that he has in the first game
04:47And getting to go back and look at
04:48You know, what caused that
04:50And how it's not over yet
04:51His backstory's not over
04:52And how it's
04:54I guess backstories are technically over
04:55But some of those
04:56They're always making new backstory
04:57Events are
04:59Coming into his future
05:00Yeah, and how that maybe relates
05:02To the Psychonauts' history also
05:04Yeah, so I mean the process first
05:06Is sort of figuring out, you know
05:07Some real, high level
05:09What is this character's personality?
05:11What do they need to do in the story?
05:12Is there anything that's important
05:13Visually to come through with them?
05:16You know, for Raz's family
05:17We wanted them to obviously all feel
05:18Like they were part of the same group
05:20And have a family resemblance
05:21I don't know, I think that's a little bit more
05:23Just anyways
05:23That's part of the story
05:25They've been forced to do this
05:26Because of the curse
05:26They've been forced to like
05:27Have a really rinky-dink circus
05:30They can't join the big circus
05:31Because they'll die in water
05:32And all that stuff
05:33I think that part of it
05:35Where they're kind of suffering
05:36The scene is kind of like
05:37Doing the best they can
05:38Of what they have
05:39I think is good
05:40Psychonauts' characters are all over the map
05:41Scott does a lot of initial exploration
05:44Of just body shapes and body types
05:46And how these characters could be
05:48This is initial early explorations
05:50Of all the characters
05:52And how
05:52There's a note there
05:53Wonderful hair all around
05:54Just in case
05:55They all should have
05:56This one's kind of a kidney bean skateboard
05:58I like the kind of teen heartthrob

07:28We've had a couple of group casts like this
07:31And it's interesting for a character design perspective
07:33Because we end up having to sort of do a pass on all of them
07:35Then sweep back
07:36Put them all together
07:37Adjust them a little bit
07:38Then do some colors on them
07:40Then bring them all together
07:41And adjust them a little bit
07:43Because sometimes we've had the thing where we design three characters
07:47And then you put them next to each other
07:48And realize they all have purple skin
07:49And it's weird for some reason
07:51He puts Sam next to Lizzie
07:53And they're both very dark blue blackish colors
07:57Oh okay
07:57Like Morris and Norma have the same color scheme
08:00Now that I see it
08:01See this is
08:02Yeah we gotta make sure we look at these together
08:04And then Scott also usually does some material call outs
08:07Mood board
08:08What's all the materials made out of
08:09Because it's not necessarily clearly apparent from the sketches
08:12And then what we've been doing also
08:14Is having Bagel do
08:15Bagel's got a really really great sense of color
08:17And so we've had him do color passes on all of the characters
08:20It's like pink on the top and the underside is light color
08:23I think that works kind of cool
08:25Like because it seems like that would be
08:26They'd have a nice satin inside
08:28And the outside would be more like a heavy cloth
08:31Or something like that
08:33They're a humble circus
08:34A dozen years of hard circus performances
08:37They're all
08:38A lot of elephant shit on them
08:39Yeah that's right

08:47And he has sort of a lighting pass on it

08:54So one of the characters we wanted to meet was Frazee
08:57Which is his older sister
08:58And she's got a really cool design
09:00So I think everybody just wanted to see her in 3D as soon as possible
09:03I wanna make a game about Frazee
09:06So that's the character that I've been working on the most
09:10So she's been fun
09:13You know first we get the models and they get rigged up
09:16And that's always kind of an interesting thing
09:18Because in a lot of video games that you work on
09:20You know characters are kind of human in a normal way
09:24And a lot of Scott's characters have their eyes in weird places
09:27And they've got strange clothing and they've got weird proportions
09:30And so it's a real challenge in a good way
09:33For the animation team and our technical artists to figure out
09:36How all of these pieces move together
09:38Sometimes it's a challenge
09:40But it's good
09:41I love his characters
09:42I'm glad that they're weird
09:44Her head's kind of big
09:45But that's pretty normal for Scott
09:47Sometimes big heads have been hard
09:49With Psychonauts it was hard
09:50Because you
09:50It's hard to get arms
09:52To reach straight up
09:53Because the head is so large
09:55The arms go through
09:56She has to have like a sigh
09:58If she has to play some lines
10:00You know then they can kick this animation off
10:02As she's kind of talking
10:03And they'll do
10:04They'll do an automated lip sync
10:06So the mouth is moving
10:08Yeah she's
10:10She's cool
10:11But the main thing is
10:12Once you start seeing the eyes moving
10:14And then suddenly
10:15Suddenly they're alive
10:18Because wherever you're looking
10:19You're pulling in something into your brain
10:21Right?
10:22You're processing
10:23And I think that's what gives life to
10:25To these characters
10:29That stuff all looks amazing
10:31I love Reza's family
10:32It came together so nice
10:33And that's our update
10:34For the holidays
10:35And now we're all going to take off
