00:05Hello, my name is Cory Barlog, director of God of War.
00:08And if you have not played God of War, spoilers abound.
00:11Go away, come back after you finish playing,
00:14and then I'll give you a little insight on how we made the game.
00:16So here we are, getting ready for the Stranger Fight,
00:20the big opening for the new God of War.
00:22I love this sequence that brings us in.
00:25You know, this lesson from Kratos.
00:29This idea that yes, I'm terrible at controlling my anger
00:32But I need you to do as I say, not as I do
00:38There's this moment in Tree of Life
00:40Where Brad Pitt is teaching his kids how to throw a punch
00:43Which kind of is born
00:45This moment is born of that idea of
00:49Something so, Kratos getting down on Atreus' level
00:52Atreus being fairly disinterested in getting engaged further and further
00:56As Kratos continues to try to antagonize him
01:01This really is to illustrate how crap of a father he is in the beginning
01:06He is trying to give him a good lesson
01:10But he's just really not that great at it
01:21This was another sequence where the lighting did not come online
01:25Until very late and I was so worried
01:28I knew that the lighting group was going to make something amazing
01:32But it's really scary as you get into release year
01:36Only a few months off and we're still waiting in the queue for the lighting on this
01:41Which is such an important sequence
01:43And the stranger arrives
01:49This is a hard character to cast
01:52We took a long time trying to find the right person for this
01:57And I was looking everywhere high and low to find somebody that was going to come in and really make
02:02a choice
02:04And I was using the example in a lot of the auditions with everybody of saying
02:10I want something similar to the choice that Benicio Del Toro made in Usual Suspects
02:15And he came in and he said
02:16I'm going to play this character that nobody can understand what he's saying
02:20He speaks really fast, his accent is super thick and he's got a little bit of a slowness to him
02:27And then, you know, you just
02:28Everyone struggles with trying to understand him
02:31But I didn't want them to mimic, you know, Benicio
02:33I wanted them to come up with something interesting
02:35And Jeremy, you know, I had a phone call with him early on
02:39And he kind of just gave me a bunch of ideas of what he was thinking immediately
02:43And I knew right away
02:45I was like, this is it, this is the right guy
02:48I can't believe he's taking my phone calls
02:51He's an incredible, incredible human
02:54And what he brought was so much beyond what was on the page
02:58It pushed us to actually go back and rewrite a lot of times
03:02Just because his performance was so good
03:06We had a lot of people asking for close-ups of his tattoos
03:10I thought it was kind of interesting
03:11A lot of people want to get his tattoos
03:12And I was like, oh, that's cool
03:13I was thinking about actually getting one of his tattoos as well
03:19What I love about this whole setup
03:20Is the classic sort of mistaken identity
03:25Kratos is right to believe that it's all about him
03:28Obviously they found him
03:29And, you know, how did they find him
03:32But the reality is nobody that plays this
03:35Ever suspects anything differently
03:37They take in the history of what God of War was
03:39And assume that guy's showing up
03:41All about Kratos
03:43Goes to show you that there's always something below the surface
03:52I really wanted him to get knocked way back
03:55Like, so you could see the power of Kratos
03:57Really see him belt him back
03:58But the distance he would have to travel
04:01In the no-cut camera was so long
04:03That we ended up really making it more shallow
04:06Because it was just unrealistic
04:07But he'd be walking for like five minutes
04:13I love the expression on people's faces
04:15When they see this for the first time
04:16When they've been unspoiled relatively
04:19To see Kratos get knocked over the house
04:22Like, it's such a great...
04:23That's the surprise and delight
04:24Of what this whole opening boss fight was about
04:27You know, we talked about
04:28Oh, God of War
04:29You know, we have these huge opening moments
04:32To the fights
04:33We have these gargantuan bosses
04:35That every game
04:36We went bigger and bigger and bigger
04:38We kind of got into this scale arms race with ourselves
04:42And I said
04:43We have to give ourselves permission on this one
04:45To not participate in the arms race anymore
04:48We have to put a reset
04:49You know, put a moratorium on it
04:51And focus on circumventing the expectations of the player
04:56That the opening level
04:58By this point, you're emotionally invested
05:00You know, if you've done our job right
05:02You're emotionally invested
05:03So you kind of feel like you do want
05:05To make sure this guy doesn't get in the house
05:06Doesn't get to Adreus
05:09But then as it escalates
05:11Escalates and escalates
05:12You're sort of taken aback
05:14Like, really?
05:14Is it still going?
05:15Like, the feedback we kept getting
05:17And we were still looking for the right length
05:21So this fight was probably three times as long
05:24Two or three times as long
05:25As it ended up in the final game
05:27So many different stages that we had
05:28And we just were picking
05:29Oh, that stage is not working anymore
05:31We'll pull that out
05:34And it's like figuring out
05:36The duration of time you spend
05:37In each of these stages
05:38So the first stage
05:39Really kind of getting your feet wet
05:42And then just
05:43Having him toss you up in the air
05:45And end up on here
05:46And when you got up here
05:47There was the free control
05:49So you would evade
05:50And you would punch him
05:51But I was realizing
05:52Like, nobody
05:53It's too early for that
05:54We just need to get right to the point of
05:55Why are there two beds in there?
05:58Really start selling
05:59Like, okay
05:59He kind of got mad
06:00And then really lets it out
06:02And people say
06:02Oh, there's no blood in this game
06:03No
06:04The blood happens
06:05When it's the most purposeful point
06:08For it to happen
06:09Because it feels
06:09Far more
06:10Like, jarring
06:12This fight
06:12The blood that happens
06:14During this fight
06:15Makes it feel
06:15So much more tactile
06:17So much more real
06:18And a bit more shocking
06:19But if you had blood the whole time
06:20Leading up to this
06:21It would just be
06:22I really didn't want the button prompt
06:24To ever come up here
06:25I wanted people to have to sit there
06:27And Kratos was just kind of
06:28Leaning against the log
06:30But we found that people
06:31Would just sit there
06:32For quite a long time
06:33Before experimenting with the button
06:34So
06:35If you sat there for a little bit
06:36We would actually
06:37Have the button prompt come up
06:39And all of this stuff
06:41Initially
06:42Was meant to be playable
06:43So
06:44This is
06:44You know
06:45This is what game development is
06:46Lots of
06:47Lots of sacrifices
06:48That
06:49The fight was so long
06:50And we just took so long
06:51To do it
06:52But this whole thing
06:53Was supposed to be
06:53Kratos throwing the punches
06:54You kind of
06:55Like
06:56Responding
06:57To the punches
06:59But
07:00Just ran out of time
07:01To be able to do
07:01All of the fail states
07:02For every one of these moments
07:05That we had to start
07:06Scaling everything back
07:07Tossing things overboard
07:08And
07:09I think in the end
07:10It actually worked
07:10Really good
07:11For the pacing
07:12Is that first
07:13Moment of rage
07:14That first moment of rage
07:16Sparked
07:17By the fact that
07:18His son was put into jeopardy
07:20And that
07:20That sort of sets the tone
07:22For the rest of the game
07:23Something we even
07:24Call back to
07:25At the end of the game
07:28Less fun
07:30I wonder what's on that
07:31Mural behind them
07:32Interesting
07:36Nobody
07:37Yet
07:37Has seen them
07:39And uh
07:40I think that's pretty cool
07:52This is that
07:53Sort of first empowering moment
07:54Of being in rage
07:55And just
07:57Absolutely obliterating
07:58The stranger
08:00Feels very good
08:01But then you kind of get that sense
08:03That you don't get it forever
08:03It runs out
08:04And now you have to really focus
08:06On blocking and evading
08:08So this whole fight
08:09Is not only the setup
08:11For the journey of the game
08:13And to kind of introduce this character
08:15But also really to stress
08:16Evasion
08:17And blocking
08:18Especially at the proper time
08:20So you're getting almost the parry
08:21Super important in this game
08:23And that you cannot survive this fight
08:25If you are not getting out of the way
08:27If you are not blocking
08:28When he gets close to you
08:32So we never ever miss an opportunity
08:34To help people understand
08:35How they need to be playing the game
08:37Every step of the way
08:37Is to introduce or reinforce
08:40These core mechanics
08:41So that we can introduce something
08:42After that
08:43Because it takes several hours
08:45To really get you written into
08:46Everything that we were trying to do
08:48In the game
08:50I love this laugh
08:53This again
08:54Was going to be
08:54Multiple punches
08:55That you could control
08:57But
08:59Cursed scope
09:02And again
09:03Just these
09:03Bits of blood all over them
09:05Really selling
09:07The violent nature of the fight
09:08And not something you've seen
09:10Up to this point
09:10So you really kind of
09:11It becomes more of a shock
09:15I was surprised
09:15I watched a bunch of streams
09:16Of people playing the game
09:18And I was surprised
09:18At how many people
09:20Were like
09:20Oh I don't think he's dead
09:21Oh that didn't do it
09:22You know
09:23If he wasn't hurt
09:24By those other things
09:25He's fine
09:25And they would kind of
09:26Circle around
09:27The thing
09:28So I wasn't as clever
09:29As I thought I was
09:30At that point
09:31But eventually
09:32They were like
09:32Oh I guess he was dead
09:36And they all kind of
09:37I think
09:38Got that sense
09:38Of he's so tired
09:39Alright
09:40He hasn't had a fight
09:41Like this
09:41In a long time
09:43You get the sense
09:44That he's older
09:45And that he's kind of
09:46Shaking off the cobwebs
09:56When Odin sent me
09:58This idea
10:00They're going to be so strong
10:01They're going to dig in so much
10:03That pressing against each other
10:04Is going to split the ground
10:05And every part of the level
10:07Is going to fall off
10:08I remember when I first
10:09Talked to people about this
10:10And there was just this idea
10:12Of like yeah
10:12That's never going to happen
10:15And you know
10:16Everybody kind of
10:17Made it bigger than I thought
10:18Like I suggested something
10:19And I think they took it
10:20And went a thousand steps further
10:22And just made it amazing
10:25And our breakables team
10:26Is just astounding
10:29The sheer volume
10:30As I said
10:31One of the big things
10:31About this fight
10:32Is going to be
10:33The destruction of the environment
10:34You're just going to break everything
10:35You know
10:36You're going to literally
10:36Create a path
10:37Out to go on your journey
10:39Because you will split
10:40The earth open
10:41You'll get knocked up in the air
10:42Get thrown down
10:43In the crevasse
10:44Trees breaking everywhere
10:45Rock shattering
10:46All over the place
10:48This fight is pointless
10:50Your struggle
10:51Is pointless
10:53It didn't have to be this way
10:56So Kratos is just
10:57Utterly covered
10:58In blood
11:01This interesting
11:02Everybody started
11:03Their theorizing right here
11:04When he said
11:05I'm not like my brother
11:07So
11:08Watching people play
11:08Not like my brother
11:09I wonder who that is
11:10His brother
11:11Interestingly
11:12Nobody
11:12Nobody guessed
11:13Correctly
11:14Who he was
11:15Several people were
11:16Utterly convinced
11:17This was Loki
11:18And that his brother
11:19Was Thor
11:21And I think that's
11:22Partially because of
11:23You know
11:23Just pop culture
11:24You know
11:25Understanding of
11:25Norse mythology
11:26Is
11:27We know who Thor is
11:28We know who
11:28Loki is from Marvel
11:34Baldur basically
11:35Is just that guy
11:36Who has a game
11:37That old RPG
11:42Playing this on the
11:43Hardest difficulty
11:44Is just
11:45Punishing
11:47It took me a long time
11:48I'm not ashamed to say
11:49That I broke a controller
11:50Doing it
11:52I won't be going back
11:53And doing it again
12:01I love how fast he moves
12:03And even in this early phase
12:04You can start to see
12:05That his tattoos are glowing
12:07A little bit blue
12:09This is the early setup
12:10For something that will happen
12:11Much later in the game
12:12When that becomes
12:13The indicator to the player
12:15Of how they need to
12:17Plan their strategy
12:18Against it
12:19The color of the tattoos
12:20Actually being
12:21What is he invulnerable to
12:27That snow technology
12:28Is just amazing
12:32This was shown to me
12:33Really early on
12:36Now several years ago
12:37They had a test
12:38In a flat
12:39Gray plane
12:40Where they showed
12:41This snow tech
12:42And I just lost it
12:43I was like
12:44This is amazing
12:44We have to do this
12:45Where else can we do this
12:46And I just started
12:47I went like so many further
12:49Steps further
12:49Than they were prepared for
12:50I think they were just like
12:51Check it out
12:52Look what we do
12:52They were like
12:53Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
12:54I don't think we can put it
12:55Everywhere in the game
12:55We haven't even finished
12:57Doing this yet
12:58But I just kept pushing
12:59And pushing
13:00And pushing
13:00And saying
13:00We just got to do this
13:01Because it's amazing
13:02Looking

13:07When Kratos does
13:08The double leg lock
13:10Pull the legs back

13:11It's just
13:11It's such a weird
13:13Like very real moment
13:14That just makes this
13:15Ending to the fight
13:16Feel even more
13:18Just real
13:19Very tactile
13:19And a little bit
13:21It's just shocking
13:22You know
13:22At one point
13:31This L3R3 interaction
13:32Was going to be removed
13:33It was Eric Williams
13:34Who finally said
13:35I'm done cutting all this stuff
13:37No way
13:37I will figure out
13:38How to make this happen
13:38We've cut way too many
13:39Interactive elements of this
13:40And I was like
13:41You are the greatest ever
13:43Thank you
13:44Because it

13:45You've got to finish off
13:46The fight with some
13:46Kind of specific interaction
13:48And this idea
13:49He's so tired
13:51Right
13:51This was really important
13:53To show that
13:54After that
13:55It took everything out of him
13:57Right
13:57And at one point
13:58In the script
13:58You could hear
13:59Atreus
14:00Kind of
14:01Sobbing a little bit
14:02Off in the distance
14:03And that was the thing
14:04That brought him back
14:05To reality
14:05And he kind of
14:06Was following that sobbing
14:07That would lure the player
14:08Back to the house
14:09But we found
14:10We just didn't need it
14:11Right
14:11That the
14:12You know
14:13We could put the player
14:13In this situation
14:14Where he's just really injured
14:15And then have this
14:17Internal slash
14:18External monologue
14:20Which helps you understand
14:21What's going on in his head
14:24First time
14:25He says
14:25Faye's name
14:28Faye
14:28What do I do
14:31Our son
14:32Is not
14:33Ready
14:34To kill your
14:36Ashes
14:36To the top
14:37Of the mountain

16:35Connection to everything
16:35You just finished
16:36The fight
16:37You come out
16:37We let you know
16:38You finished
16:39Sort of the prologue
16:40Of all of this
16:40But you see the mountain
16:41Off in the distance
16:42And that's the first thing
16:43That they talk about
16:44And now
16:45The thing we were so scared of
16:47We're like
16:47Well no one's gonna know
16:48That they have to go
16:48Through this path
16:49Right here
16:50They're not gonna get
16:51That they have to do that
16:52But everybody
16:53It just felt natural
16:55Even though
16:55When it was in grey sheet
16:56It felt ridiculous
16:57So it's interesting
16:58How much art
17:00And the sense of place
17:02And really good lighting
17:03Can all just kind of
17:05Help sell something
17:06That without the context
17:07Is perhaps a little bit ludicrous
17:09I could acknowledge that
17:10I love this moment
17:11This is the first moment
17:12That he jumps on his back
17:13And you know
17:14Watching people
17:14When they're streaming
17:15And have that like
17:16That's so cute
17:17Right
17:18It becomes something
17:19You just do throughout
17:19The rest of the game
17:20But I never realized
17:21How interesting of a moment
17:23It is
17:23It's the first time
17:24You experience it
17:25I could have died
17:28Never leave me alone again
