What is your Lions confidence level during free agency?
Transcript
00:07all right we're talking about the lions now in free agency and and as things are standing right
00:11now on on 3-1-3 day after we just talked about the red wings and the chances to make
00:15the playoffs
00:16as red wings are going through a rough stretch and here it is march again the the munch of marth
00:20as we call it um it's very difficult the last three years it's been devastating for red wings
00:26and the fans and here's the early stages of it almost halfway through the month and it's they're
00:32doing it again uh and they've got some injuries here as well to larkin and cop that don't help
00:37we ask fans about the listeners about the uh the chance of making a playoff so for the most part
00:42people are not on board with you mark ryan you're optimistic they make it people are more on board
00:46with kenny saying they're done i'm more middle of the road but i do lean towards i still think this
00:51is a playoff team because there's a lot of season left and i think a lot of the numbers kind
00:54of
00:55favor them so we transfer that to the lions now a few days into free agency and a lot of
01:01the big
01:01name players have gone um with exception of a position that maybe the high-end player has gone
01:08obviously with trey hendrickson but edge rusher is something that lions fans have been clamoring for
01:12for years to have somebody outside of aiden hutchinson um join this team last year they had
01:17el-kadee muhammad emerged he had 11 sacks in the season and kind of came out of nowhere he had
01:22a career
01:22year he entered free agency signs with tampa bay but only signs for one year and six million dollars
01:28okay to your credit you didn't think he was going to get that much in the open market i thought
01:33he'd
01:33get more because of the year that he had and and then you saw that in jalen phillips signed a
01:38ridiculous contract i thought maybe this is a nice time for el canine to cash in and he really didn't
01:42cash in well the nfl clearly values pass rushers guys that can disrupt the backfield get to the
01:47quarterback and my my reasoning though for muhammad entering probably i think a soft market for him
01:52was my reason before he signed even was he's 31 years old he's never done this before in his career
02:00who's going to give him the money to you know what i mean basically you can't do it based on
02:03resume
02:04the only resume he has is last year and he didn't even start every game because the lions would put
02:09somebody else or even when he was healthy my counterpoint to all the lions fans are upset and i
02:13understand because one year six million dollars for a guy who put up double digit sacks and had
02:18a bunch of pressures too yeah it seems like the great value my counterpoint is playing devil's
02:22advocate here is you know who saw him every day in practice and every week is the detroit lions and
02:28they didn't want to give him seven million dollars and if we like how they evaluate then you can
02:32understand that and now they may be wrong but i'm just telling you from their point of view they're
02:36like you know what no he's romeo aquara he's you know george johnson he's you know i he's we don't
02:42need
02:42him that's fine i totally get not giving him the uh multi-year deal but i thought somebody would
02:47give him one year 15 i thought one year 10 would be maybe the basement and then you move up
02:53from that
02:54but one in six really the entire market for edge has been lower than than you thought when you
02:59consider that uh well the high end was high right hendrickson was 28 compared to hutch's hutch's 45
03:07suddenly the hutch deal doesn't look so great anymore does it no i i think when you go back
03:11and look at 45 million dollars a year for an edge rush you're like wow that was a ton of
03:15cash
03:16do they have to pay that much for him but on the other side jalen phillips who hasn't done a
03:20damn
03:20thing got 30 million a year but it leads a bunch of guys who are in the free agent market
03:26at the
03:26edge rush position that i think lions fans if they landed at least one of these guys might say
03:31okay fine i know i would it missed on an alkania muhammad i don't like that but okay what if
03:36they
03:37land the guy i've been touting is still cam jordan who hasn't missed a game in forever he's 36 but
03:43he
03:43had a 10 sack season last year in new orleans here are the other names that are still available
03:48uh you got joey bosa who's oft injured i'd probably stay away from joey bosa but we know that he
03:54still
03:54has there's some talent there uh aj epinesa is another name judevian clowny is another name
04:00and hassan reddick is another name these are all guys that are still available i don't know if any
04:06of those guys are going to approach the the 10 million dollar threshold for a for an edge rusher
04:10in fact i think probably cut it in half and that's where you're at all these guys are ripe for
04:15a one-year
04:15deal which is a brad holmes special so i'm still okay with the address situation because i think they're
04:21going to get somebody and i'm hoping that it's cam jordan because he's the guy that's been most
04:25consistent well the problem is they need multiple somebodies now right i mean if if you and i were
04:31to to to go through question by question gator on how many questions this team has entering the season
04:38we might get 30 questions deep right like question by question uh backup running back isaac tesla
04:46interior the offensive line just going down the list the questions are insane here's one
04:51for you who do you rely on who can you count on in the secondary anybody well that's that's the
04:57big
04:57thing right there i mean uh dj reed uh i guess is uh is one um but outside of him
05:06what are we looking
05:09at because we don't know what terry and arnold situation is rake straw has hardly played the two
05:14safeties we don't know the health of those guys they just got izian to play safety which i like i
05:18think
05:18it's a good move to get him uh he's a guy who supports the run the the rush defense um
05:23but
05:24that's it that's and they bring back guys that were you know like rock yassin who is i mean let's
05:31face
05:31it he's he's a backup player he's a depth player that's necessary and i'm glad they have him but
05:36he's not a starter they still need to get starters it at least two as far as i'm concerned this
05:41in the
05:41secondary because i'm not counting either safety being ready to go i can't get over the fact that this
05:46franchise has not figured out defense yet has not addressed defense yet has not invested in it's
05:53almost like the more the fan base wants edge help the least likely it is to happen it's it's
05:59incredible the last 10 super bowl champions had a defensive ranking number nine that's the average
06:05ranking the lions over that same stretch have trotted out the 25th ranked defense in the nfl and
06:11yet it continues to happen year after year and here we are again but does this defense does it
06:19have any prospects of being a good defense this year right now it doesn't look that way no because
06:24health is a major concern and they still have holes uh to fill to your point 248-539-9797 is
06:31a
06:31telephone number willie is next up in wisconsin willie welcome 971 hey thank you fellas for having me i do
06:37appreciate that so i'm going to say something and what i want to tell you guys is i'm not going
06:43to
06:43knock all 40 gems i'm not going to say anything bad about those guys anymore because i've heard all
06:49three owners say that they just want their team to be played many four games at the end of the
06:53year
06:53whether it's december september or whether it's march that that's their goal so when iserman and
06:59brad holmes and harris when they make the in langdon when they make the decisions they make and the
07:04fan base is unhappy about it their hands are tied fellas their hands are tied if you say i just
07:10want
07:10a house in the car i don't want a mansion you're going to make house and car moves in your
07:14life okay
07:14so when their bosses say we just want to play meaningful games we don't care about winning
07:19championships so then you're going to get what you get at the trade deadline you're going to get
07:23what you get you know a free agency in offseason and i'm i'm seeing it it's just not a coincidence
07:27that all four gms no hairs iserman holmes and uh langdon it's not a coincidence that all four of them
07:33are doing the same darn thing because i look at the owners i've heard all three owners say what
07:38the expectations are and none of it was winning championships it was just sustained success that
07:43were sustained success that that's you know you have to pay attention to that and what that is and
07:47what that looks like what that and that's why we're getting what we get all right thanks willie i
07:51appreciate it i think some of that's a little unfair because i think that uh you know when when
07:56owners or gms or anybody says something like we just want to play meaningful games in september
08:00because the the tigers hadn't done anything in 10 years they can't possibly mean so you know what
08:08what's a meaningful game we as fans wanted meaningful games in september to get excited about things and
08:13then they make to the postseason and then things change and then you hear and this is where i think
08:17he was being unfair because chris illich said that he would be willing to spend money once you knew that
08:23the team was in a good place well guess what they did this offseason done that they spent money
08:27they went out got framer valdez they they signed uh justin verlander and you know made a couple other
08:32moves to the to the bullpen they spent some some good money this year and and now people think they
08:38might have the best rotation in baseball still need to find a bat but maybe the bat comes from
08:42mcgonagall and others who knows we'll we'll go down that path later on but at least with the the tigers
08:48i
08:49think that's that's not necessarily true i think he can make a case for that with the pistons
08:54based on what the pistons did or didn't do at the trade deadline this year this is a team that
08:59was
08:59the best in basketball going into the trade deadline and the move they made was not even
09:05lukewarm i mean it's it's it's met with i don't know it's not necessarily met with vitriol but
09:11give up on on jayden ivy to bring in herter and herter has has been slow to really kind of
09:17acclimate himself to this team now maybe that changes over the next few weeks when they finish off
09:21the season maybe becomes a more integral part coming off the bench but it's probably more fair
09:25with the pistons i think his remarks that it is the tigers red wings i mean look during the thing
09:32with the red wings and the pistons well more so the red wings than the other leagues there's a
09:36salary cap in the hockey and it's a hard cap it's none of this funny money cap like the nfl
09:42is funny
09:43money it's not open-ended like the like major league baseball and it's not like the nba where you can
09:48re-sign your own free agents and get above it and go to a luxury tax the nhl is a
09:52hard freaking cap
09:53so they're under different constraints there but the red wings need to find a superstar player that's
09:57a whole different thing and and they haven't had it and they continue not to have it and most years
10:02when you look at the list of the top 100 nhl players the red wings don't have a guy in
10:06the top
10:0620 most of the years that's a big problem but you give eisenman credit for going and getting
10:12justin falk you give chris illich and scott harris credit for going out and getting for amber valdez
10:18what are the lions doing like we just honestly i'm not even saying that from a snarky standpoint
10:23i want to know what the plan is because what i worry is they're not spending any money to ensure
10:31that they continue down this faulty road of doing nothing but keeping their own guys 248-539-9797
10:38is the telephone number mark's got his idea what the lions plan or maybe he's just throwing his
10:43hands up what the lions plan is but do you think this lions team as it stands right now
10:48that they're a playoff team they're the odds-on favorite to win the division
10:51in vegas i think that's kind of strange we'll talk about it next year 97-1
