00:00Quando you play as Chickens, it's four player coop instead of co-op.
00:03Oh my god.
00:04Right? Right, guys?
00:05That's so good.
00:06Anyone?
00:06Justin, you're fired.
00:08You just removed the hyphen.
00:09Justin, you're hired.
00:12Good, because I think I just got fired from PlayStation.
00:14We just unplugged his microphone.
00:23Hey folks, welcome back to PlayStation Underground.
00:25You've got Kristen and Justin here, and we are taking a look at Guacamelee 2.
00:28We're playing on a PS4 Pro right now, and we are also joined by Graham and Augusto from Drinkbox Studios.
00:34Hey guys.
00:34Hi.
00:35Thanks for showing the game today.
00:36We are looking at something really colorful and bright here.
00:40What are we looking at right now?
00:41So this is an area, it's about halfway into the game.
00:44It's called the Obsidian Temple.
00:46Ooh.
00:49So Juan...
00:50Already a chicken sighted.
00:51Yeah.
00:52Juan Aguacate, he's on an adventure right now trying to stop the evil henchmen from obtaining
00:58three relics, and Juan has already gotten the first relic.
01:04The second relic is somewhere hidden in this temple, so we're now exploring the temple,
01:08and we also see that the evil henchmen are also exploring the temple at the same time,
01:12trying to find it before us.
01:14All right, so we're moving through here.
01:15So back at PSX, I played a demo of the game, and I fought this guy,
01:19and he was an amazing boss fight, but I think that because I have been playing the game a little
01:24bit,
01:25and I'm a little early in, and I fought him once, so I guess that does he like come back,
01:28and is he kind of like a recurring character throughout the game?
01:31Yeah, so that's...
01:32His name is El Maneco.
01:33He's kind of like a...
01:34He's like a bad birthday party magician slash Casanova.
01:39Travels with an entourage of chickens.
01:41Yeah, he's one of the...
01:42He's the first boss in the game that you fight, and at this point,
01:46you've already defeated him and taken the relic that he was trying to get,
01:48so he's kind of trying to redeem himself in the eyes of the...
01:51Trying to get one step ahead of you, you know?
01:53Yeah, like the main boss, Salvador, he's pretty upset with Maneco at this point, so...
01:58We've got some tricky platforming challenging going on here.
02:02I was going to say, it's interesting to see the different kinds of moves
02:04that he's using to make his way across.
02:06Yeah, so the Obsidian Temple is kind of weird.
02:08It doesn't really obey the laws of gravity in the same way as other parts of the game do.
02:13So you'll see like lava on the ceiling, and it has shifting walls.
02:17That's not normal? Lava on the ceiling?
02:20Oh, what's happening here?
02:22So you're going to get to see a couple of new enemies here from Gwakunili 2.
02:25The guy at the top there, he's a shaman, and he spawns enemies,
02:29so if you don't take him out quickly, he'll spawn.
02:31He'll just keep bringing him out.
02:33Yeah, so take out the shaman first.
02:34That's right, yeah.
02:35These enemies are pretty tough, too.
02:37They hit you really hard and knock you up.
02:39They've got a big wind-up, though.
02:40Yeah.
02:42They've got a giant hand that they can knock you back with.
02:45And no good fight is complete without busting a pinata at the end, right?
02:49As they also did.
02:51I just love the style here.
02:53What drove you guys to sort of expand the world from the first Gwakumelee?
02:58Yeah, in the first Gwakumelee, you know, when we were developing the game,
03:02we had a lot of ideas that we just didn't have time to get into the game.
03:05A lot of ideas for different types of enemies and bosses in different environments.
03:10Did I hear correctly that this one has, like, twice the enemy types from the first one?
03:15Yeah, so all the enemies from the first one are coming back,
03:17plus a whole slew of additional ones this time around.
03:19Yeah.
03:21So here's an example of, like, just a basic challenge room that it's actually quite hard.
03:25Augusto made it look easy.
03:26It usually takes me, like, 20 tries.
03:29Yeah.
03:30So he just got the third piece of an upgrade for his stamina.
03:34Oh, nice.
03:34You can see on the top left of the screen there's, like, these little yellow circles.
03:38Whenever he used one of his more powerful moves, it consumes a circle,
03:41and you have to wait a little bit of time to get the circles to come back.
03:44And one thing I love about Guacamelee! is how you use those powerful moves,
03:47not only in combat, but also to traverse the environment.
03:50Those are your kind of, the moves that you unlock that let you go to different places
03:55and unlock different parts of the map.
03:56Yeah, yeah.
03:57Ah, poil power!
04:00That's what I love about this game.
04:01You can just turn into a chicken, move your way through the world.
04:05Game of the year.
04:06All good games have you turning into a chicken.
04:09Best game starring a luchador who can turn into a chicken of 2018.
04:15Yeah, so the chicken plays a much bigger role in Guacamelee 2.
04:19In the first game, you're typically focused on,
04:22although you do get the ability to turn into a chicken,
04:24it's only useful for going through tunnels in the original game.
04:26You have a very basic peck attack.
04:29But in the sequel, the chicken has its own whole set of moves.
04:33Love it.
04:34Well, they figure into the story too, right?
04:36Oh, yeah.
04:37Yeah, there's a whole chicken subplot happening.
04:41Something about a chicken Illuminati?
04:43Yeah, that's right.
04:45Yeah, the chicken Illuminati.
04:47You meet them shortly after this point in the game.
04:49And they give you kind of a side quest.
04:51It's kind of an optional side quest that you can do
04:53to distract yourself from the main game if you want to.
04:59Oh, my gosh.
05:00I'm going to do it.
05:01Whatever side quest you put in this game,
05:03I'm going to do all of them.
05:05So this is another new enemy.
05:06We call him Slowpoke.
05:07When you're inside of that circle, you move slower,
05:10but enemies don't.
05:11So they put you at a disadvantage.
05:13You can see he's falling slower.
05:15Yeah.
05:15And you can only break their green shield
05:17by using a slam attack on them.
05:20Shablam!
05:21Boom!
05:22I love it.
05:24So, yeah, when was the decision made within the studio to say,
05:28you know what, I think it's time.
05:29It's time for Guacamelee 2.
05:32I guess just as we were wrapping up Severed,
05:34we were talking about new ideas,
05:35and we had had enough time while we were working on Severed
05:39for about two years to formulate something
05:43we thought would be interesting to bring to the sequel.
05:46Not to mention we had a lot of ideas
05:49that we weren't able to implement the first time around
05:52just because of time constraints.
05:53Oh, no.
05:54Goose down.
05:54All right.
05:55Well, and Severed was really well-received.
05:59It got a lot of great ratings.
06:02Were you guys influenced by that critical reception
06:05when you were creating Guacamelee 2?
06:07Did any ideas from Severed end up in Guacamelee 2?
06:11Not so much.
06:13No, the gameplay and the story are just so different with Severed
06:16that Guacamelee is kind of its own thing.
06:19Yeah, even the tone of the game,
06:21like Severed is much more serious and dark.
06:23Guacamelee is so lighthearted and goofy.
06:26Yeah, I was surprised when I played Severed.
06:28I was like, wait, that's not what I expected in the studio.
06:32So, yeah, you're seeing a bunch of additional mechanics here
06:35where every level in Guacamelee 2
06:37has different environmental mechanics.
06:38So in the previous room,
06:39you were seeing these dimension waves that are moving.
06:42Yeah, and your enemies sort of are affected by it as well.
06:45Yeah, and on the left of the screen here,
06:48you'll see these gravity zones
06:49that you move up and down through.
06:50and when you swap dimensions,
06:52which is another big mechanic in the game,
06:54you're swapping between the living and the dead world.
06:55Well, sometimes things are different between the two dimensions
06:57and those gravity zones will move in different directions
06:59depending on which dimension you're in.
07:01Got it.
07:01The dimension swapping is such a brain twister
07:06when you're playing some of these difficult platforming sections.
07:10Yeah, yeah.
07:12In the original Guacamelee,
07:13I remember a lot of people had trouble
07:15wrapping their head around it.
07:16but I think we're trying to introduce it
07:17a little bit slower this time around
07:19so that you have more time to...
07:20The game is actually quite a bit longer this time
07:22so we can take more time to introduce things
07:24over a long period of time.
07:27Oh, no.
07:28Throwing some bones at you.
07:31We've got a bone to pick.
07:33So now we're seeing a single player,
07:36but this game now has four local co-op right now?
07:39Four player?
07:40That's right.
07:41So, yeah, at any time you can have friends jump in
07:44or jump out just by grabbing controller
07:46and pushing X to start up.
07:48I'm always looking for a good local co-op game.
07:51Yeah, super arcade,
07:54like a holdover from the old co-op or coin-op days.
07:57Yeah.
07:58Yeah, and each of the four players
08:00will have different colors
08:01to match the PlayStation light bar colors.
08:03Oh, nice.
08:04So it's easy to find yourself.
08:06Are there chickens different colors too?
08:07Yes, there are.
08:08When you play as chickens,
08:09it's four player co-op instead of co-op.
08:11Oh, my God.
08:12Right?
08:12Right, guys?
08:13That's so good.
08:14Anyone?
08:14Justin, you're fired.
08:16You just removed the hyphen.
08:17Justin, you're hired.
08:18That's right.
08:20Good, because I think I just got fired from PlayStation.
08:22We just unplugged his microphone.
08:26Oh, my gosh.
08:27So, yeah, we have another little side challenge
08:29in this room here.
08:30Nice.
08:30Yeah, anytime you come into a room
08:31and you see a chest like this.
08:34What?
08:34This one's tough.
08:35I would probably do that 80 times,
08:36just fall into the fire.
08:38Fall into the fire.
08:39No.
08:41I can do this.
08:43So how crazy does it get
08:45when you have four players
08:46on the screen doing this stuff?
08:48Is it even feasible to play with four players?
08:50Yeah.
08:51So, you know,
08:52some things are a lot easier,
08:54some things are harder,
08:55but it's a lot of fun
08:57because you can kind of interfere
08:58with each other in weird ways
08:59when you're dimension swapping
09:00and stuff like that.
09:01Could it be that one person
09:02is making the dimension swap
09:03while the other is trying to crawl through?
09:04Yeah, so all the players
09:06have the ability
09:07to control their own dimension swap
09:08by just flipping themselves
09:09to the other dimension
09:10and they turn into, like, shadows.
09:11Interesting.
09:12But then they can also change
09:13the dimension for everybody
09:14with a different trigger.
09:15Yeah, I think it's R1 changes your dimension,
09:18R2 changes everybody's dimension.
09:19That's right.
09:20Yeah.
09:21All right, Augusto's accumulated
09:22some money here,
09:23so he's going to buy
09:24a couple of upgrades.
09:25This is another new thing
09:26for Guacamelee 2.
09:29As you're playing through the game,
09:30you'll meet these different trainers
09:31and, you know, Flameface is coming back.
09:34He's one of the trainers
09:34in the Inglokamelee 2.
09:36Augusto just bought a bunch
09:37of grappling moves
09:38so that he can...
09:39Oh!
09:39He can almost die.
09:42So is it just that you have
09:43to meet the trainer
09:44to unlock that skill set?
09:45Yeah, that's right.
09:46Okay.
09:47And then each of the trainers
09:48has, you know,
09:49a different kind of category
09:50of skills that they teach you.
09:52Okay.
09:52And you meet them
09:53pretty early on in the game, right?
09:55Yeah.
09:55So you can...
09:56Once you have those
09:57skill trees unlocked,
09:58you can kind of start
09:59building up your own play style
10:01however you want to play
10:02through the game.
10:03That's right.
10:03Oh, my God.
10:04A lot of the trainers...
10:06Well, all the trainers
10:07have, like, a skill
10:07at the bottom of their tree
10:08that you can't buy
10:09until you've purchased
10:10everything else
10:10that's really powerful.
10:12So things like
10:13you can crouch
10:14to get health back
10:15is a super powerful upgrade
10:17that's almost necessary
10:18for some of the harder
10:19endgame challenges.
10:20Yeah.
10:21That sounds very useful.
10:23I'm more about, like,
10:24unlocking more traversal methods
10:26up front
10:27and being able to explore more
10:28and all that.
10:29Making my punches
10:30more powerful
10:31so I can plow through
10:32enemies quickly.
10:34Nice.
10:35So, yeah,
10:36we kind of shortcut it here.
10:37We already finished
10:38two of the three wings.
10:40Thanks, sucker.
10:42So we've opened a portal now
10:43to a secret area
10:45in this temple.
10:46I love all the quips
10:47in this game.
10:48It's just so lighthearted.
10:52Well, this level
10:53doesn't look finished.
10:56So, yeah,
10:57so someone had an idea
10:58way back.
10:59We wanted to do something
11:00kind of like
11:00Unfinished Swan style.
11:01Oh, yes!
11:03So, yeah,
11:04in this area
11:04we have these
11:04summoning shaman.
11:05Oh, where you can't see
11:06where you're moving.
11:07I see.
11:08So Augusto kind of knows
11:09the area pretty well
11:10at this point,
11:11but when you first
11:12come in here
11:13you kind of have to
11:13explore a little bit,
11:14kill guys to reveal
11:15what the map
11:16actually looks like.
11:17It's a bit of a little maze.
11:18This is great.
11:20Oh, my gosh.
11:23Can you do
11:23a rocket kick?
11:25There we go.
11:26Boom!
11:27Boom.
11:30Yeah, this is rad.
11:35Ah, I see
11:36and we got that shaman
11:37in the corner
11:37we want to get rid of.
11:39The shaman makes sure
11:40that there's still
11:40plenty of guys
11:41for you to kill
11:42to make the splats.
11:45Oh, goodness.
11:46So how long
11:47do you think
11:47it'll take
11:48players to figure
11:49this area out
11:50the first time
11:50they play through it?
11:52Augusto's making
11:52it look really easy.
11:53It used to be
11:54really hard
11:55and we scaled it
11:56way back.
11:57I remember
11:58it was way too
11:59difficult.
11:59Was there some
11:59focus testing
12:00and people
12:00just gave up?
12:02We've done so much
12:03focus testing
12:03on Guacamelee 2
12:04more than we've ever
12:05we typically do
12:06a lot of focus testing
12:07but this time around
12:08we were
12:08for the last six months
12:09almost every week
12:11we had people
12:11coming in
12:11to play the game.
12:12Oh, wow.
12:13And they'd come in
12:14for three days
12:14to try and beat it
12:15three days in a row.
12:17So I think
12:18the difficulty
12:18is pretty fair.
12:20I must have
12:21missed my invite
12:21for that focus testing.
12:23You're just ruining
12:23this guy's day.
12:25Don't tell him
12:26about the last room there.
12:28I love it.
12:31So this is White Pack.
12:33She's one of the
12:34henchwomen
12:36of Salvador
12:37and she's
12:38she's like a
12:39kind of a
12:39she's a practicer
12:40of dark magic.
12:41Okay.
12:42Darkest canine sorceries.
12:43Yeah.
12:44Go ahead and wrestle me.
12:47I love it.
12:48I love it.
12:52I was just commenting
12:53before we started
12:54recording too.
12:55It's easy to look
12:57at this game in motion
12:58and say wow
12:58it looks awesome
12:59but then when you
13:00actually when you
13:01start playing it
13:02you realize oh
13:02the music is also
13:03fantastic.
13:04Oh yeah.
13:05We've been really
13:06lucky to work with
13:06some incredible
13:07composers and musicians
13:08for Rock Melee 2.
13:11Oh you're working
13:11with multiple composers?
13:12Yeah so for the
13:13original game we
13:14worked with Peter
13:15Chapman and Rahm
13:16DiPrisco and they
13:17both came back
13:17this time.
13:18Oh cool.
13:18And we also
13:20started working with
13:21Mariachi Entertainment
13:21System for a couple
13:23of the tracks in the
13:23game.
13:24They're famous for
13:25doing a
13:25Is that like
13:26chiptune mariachi?
13:28Well they take
13:29popular video games
13:30and then do
13:30mariachi versions
13:31live.
13:31Oh that's amazing.
13:33Yeah live recordings
13:33they're incredible
13:34musicians.
13:37Man so you're
13:38having to use
13:39these combat mechanics
13:40to kind of
13:41keep yourself
13:42afloat kind of
13:43like utilizing
13:43the traversal
13:45side of the
13:45mechanics at the
13:46same time that
13:47you're fighting
13:47these things.
13:48Really interesting
13:49way to approach
13:50combat scenarios
13:51here.
13:52Yeah yeah it's
13:52like sometimes you
13:53have to do some
13:53super moves like
13:54you're fighting
13:55moves in the air
13:55to keep yourself
13:56up there longer
13:56so that you
13:57don't get hit by
13:57like a beam of
13:58light.
14:00So yeah White Pack
14:00is manipulating
14:01the environment
14:01between these phases
14:02to change the
14:04arena setup.
14:05I can't get to
14:06them.
14:07Yeah and I love
14:08the dodge mechanic
14:09in this game it
14:10feels so good to
14:10pull off.
14:11What's the
14:11the term for
14:12hit stun or
14:13hit confirm or
14:14I forget what
14:15hit pause.
14:16Hit pause I
14:16think that's
14:17what it is yeah
14:17where you it
14:18just kind of like
14:19freezes for just
14:20a second when you
14:21dodge through
14:21something to give
14:22you that confirmation
14:23that yeah you
14:23just dodged
14:24that it feels so
14:25satisfying.
14:26Thank you yeah
14:28we spent a lot of
14:28time playing around
14:29with those things
14:30for sure trying
14:30to make them
14:31feel good.
14:35Mientos.
14:37getting smaller yeah I
14:40like that that it
14:40gets more contained
14:41yeah and then you
14:42put a big enemy in
14:43there too.
14:43Oh good yeah sure
14:45nothing can go
14:46wrong.
14:48Thank goodness he
14:49can stick to walls
14:50indefinitely yeah if
14:51he started sliding
14:52down or something that
14:52would just make
14:53things so much more
14:53stressful yeah it's
14:55tricky because you
14:55got to keep an eye on
14:56the giant in the
14:58middle with you plus
14:58white pack on the
14:59sides like yeah
15:07yeah there's almost
15:08like a it felt kind
15:09of bullet hell ish
15:11like bullet hell
15:12light going on there
15:13while you were
15:13fighting that stuff
15:14yeah with you know
15:15the projectiles coming
15:16in from the sides
15:17and everything.
15:21What is that?
15:23So these these
15:23enemies are exploding
15:24enemies they do a
15:26lot of damage if you
15:27don't kill them before
15:27the timer expires
15:28and they're they're
15:29all being shielded by
15:30different colors which
15:31means you have to use
15:31the matching color
15:32super move to break
15:34the shields before
15:35you can damage them
15:36so yeah the red one
15:37requires an uppercut.
15:39So now we're getting
15:39to a point where
15:40you're integrating the
15:41chicken transformations
15:42into this encounter.
15:44Yeah yeah and
15:45there's there's also
15:46the chicken has
15:47certain moves that
15:48have corresponding
15:49colored shields as
15:50well so sometimes
15:50you have to switch to
15:51a chicken to break
15:52a shield.
15:53Was there a certain
15:53point where the team
15:54said okay this is all
15:55just getting to be a
15:56bit too much this is
15:57turning too confusing
15:58but you have to scale
15:59back on how much
16:01players have to switch
16:02back and forth and
16:03remember dimensions and
16:04turn into a chicken and
16:05now you have to do the
16:05diagonal smash thing.
16:08There's definitely like
16:09a lot of balancing
16:11going on because even
16:13with the original game
16:14we're using every
16:15simple button on the
16:16dual shot controller
16:17so we had to be careful
16:19not to make it more
16:20complicated than it
16:21already was.
16:22Thankfully the chicken
16:24is it's it's simple
16:25enough that it's an
16:26intuitive enough that it
16:27doesn't add too much
16:28confusion.
16:29I think it's important
16:30to note that we're
16:31you said about halfway
16:32through the game right?
16:33So by this point
16:34We've unlocked a lot
16:35of abilities.
16:36Yeah by this point
16:36players will become
16:37more familiar with
16:39a lot of the moves
16:40will be instinctual
16:41you'll just be
16:42pressing the buttons
16:43without having to
16:44think too hard about
16:45it.
16:45That's right I think
16:46you're probably about
16:46four or five hours
16:48into the game at this
16:48point and each time
16:50you're getting a new
16:50move you're we're
16:52training them how to
16:53use it and then
16:54introducing it with the
16:54other moves.
16:55Yeah you guys were
16:56really good about that
16:56in the first game.
17:02Oh boy.
17:03Oh sure naturally.
17:05Yeah as they do.
17:08I just love the
17:09character design in
17:10this game.
17:11They all look so
17:12unique and distinct.
17:13I love it.
17:14Thank you.
17:16So how are you
17:17going to go about
17:17this?
17:18Yeah I mean
17:19they're just
17:19punches to the face.
17:20They're like daring
17:21you.
17:22Yes that's it.
17:24Come on.
17:26Good opportunity
17:26to just rack up a
17:27combo here though.
17:28Yeah.
17:29You want to make
17:29the numbers go up.
17:30Yeah.
17:33Oh you got this.
17:34Oh come on.
17:35You can do it.
17:38She said enough.
17:43I'm living for the
17:44reaction.
17:45Oh good.
17:45Yeah we're inside now.
17:47Oh I see.
17:49So she has some
17:50commentary while you
17:51are beating up her
17:52insides.
17:53It's pretty funny.
17:59Oh that would hurt.
18:00Yeah doesn't the
18:00boss know how
18:01video game bosses
18:02work?
18:02Obviously you're
18:03just going to go and
18:04defeat her from the
18:05inside.
18:09El otro mundo.
18:12Doesn't that just
18:13mean the other world?
18:14What does that mean?
18:15Yes.
18:16Other world?
18:17Other world.
18:21Wait that was the
18:22same woman?
18:23Yeah.
18:24No that's just
18:25not it.
18:25She's like she's your
18:27co-op partner.
18:28Okay cool.
18:28Yeah.
18:30I was about to be
18:31like what sort of
18:31radical transformation
18:32just happened?
18:34Fun note on the co-op
18:35by the way when you go
18:36to get to the little
18:36checkpoints you can
18:37press triangle I think
18:38and you can select
18:39different skins for
18:40each player playing the
18:41game.
18:42and yeah you can
18:43customize your what
18:44character skin you're
18:45playing as and as
18:46you're playing through
18:46the game you can
18:47unlock new skins by
18:48doing different
18:48challenges and stuff
18:49as well.
18:49So is this the relic
18:50that we needed to
18:51capture?
18:52Yep exactly.
18:52That's it.
18:53Obsidian relic.
18:59Yay we did it.
19:02Ruh-roh.
19:03Oh.
19:04So this is Salvador's
19:05appearance.
19:10So he's the big bad.
19:12Yeah.
19:13So what's his goal
19:15with the relics?
19:17He needs three relics
19:19to open the portal to
19:21the Notaverse to the
19:22Otro Mundo to get a
19:26sacred guacamole.
19:28Sacred guacamole.
19:29Okay.
19:30There it is.
19:31I mean I really like
19:32guacamole.
19:33if I heard about a
19:34really good guacamole
19:35I might become evil
19:37to get my hands on
19:37it.
19:42Justin you're right
19:43the music is just
19:44awesome in this
19:44moment.
19:47Do you guys do
19:48like soundtracks for
19:49your games or are you
19:50talking about releasing
19:51a soundtrack for this
19:51one?
19:52Yeah where someone
19:53back in the offices I
19:54think is working on
19:54that right now.
19:55Oh cool.
19:55Yeah just trying to get
19:56all the tracks together
19:57to make sense on a
19:58soundtrack.
19:59Gotta add endings and
20:00fade outs and stuff
20:01like that.
20:01Oh yeah sure.
20:04I love that the
20:05dialogue has so many
20:06puns so many jokes at
20:08what point do you
20:09guys decide like too
20:10many puns let's dial
20:11that one back or do
20:12you just like throw
20:13them more in?
20:19There's a pretty funny joke
20:23here that we didn't see
20:24the setup for it but you'll
20:27see the punchline.
20:29Cool.
20:30When you're first making
20:31your way into the obsidian
20:33temple here you pass by
20:34this little boy who's
20:35building a statue and he's
20:36all proud of a statue how
20:37long it took him to make
20:38the statue and now you're
20:40going to see the boy
20:41again.
20:45Hmm.
20:47Oh okay.
20:52Just follow me.
20:54The cacti might go
20:55Oh no.
20:57Oh no.
21:00No.
21:04He's even wearing the
21:05mask.
21:08The darkest timeline.
21:09That was a perfect like
21:11slow zoom into his face.
21:14Oh my goodness.
21:15Yeah so that's the obsidian
21:16temple.
21:17Very cool.
21:17Or at least part of the
21:18level there.
21:19All right.
21:20Well thank you guys for
21:21stopping by.
21:22So when does the game come
21:22out?

21:29Man.

21:30are watching this who knows.
