00:35We are here at Bungie looking at Destiny 2, Warmind, the Insight Terminus Strike.
00:41I'm here with Evan, the design director of Warmind.

00:56Hi everybody.
00:59So Regal, so Regal.
01:01So we are here on Nessus, this is one of the new strikes.
01:04This is the Sony exclusive strike for the Warmind DLC.
01:08One of three total strikes in the DLC, is that right Evan?
01:11Yep, that's correct. Yep, three strikes total.
01:12So as people have definitely already noticed, we're rolling with some special weapons here.
01:18You all were generous enough to treat me to my very favorite weapon from D1.
01:25The Suros regime is back. It has all the perks that you missed.
01:31And I am very thankful to you guys. Thank you.

01:39Tell me a little bit about what you guys are rolling with.
01:43Yeah, so I got the Polaris Lance, which is Anna Bray's scout rifle from Polaris.
01:50It has a really cool perk. If I get four precision shots, my fifth shot is a delayed explosive
01:55solar round. And I'm also rolling a D2 Classic since the past rocket launcher.
02:00Okay. And, sorry, Anna Bray was that?
02:03Yeah, Anna Bray. Anna Bray is one of our new NPCs we're introducing in the Warmind expansion.
02:09So we've mentioned her before in some grimoire and other extended fiction, but we're actually
02:13going to make her a fully realized character.
02:15Okay. Cool. And Josh, what do you got there?
02:18I am running a D2 Classic Loadout. I have a Better Devils and a Positive Outlook, as I do.
02:26And then I also have a new and improved Borealis Exotic Sniper Rifle, because everybody loves
02:33a sniper.
02:34Now, new and improved, tell me a little bit about that.
02:37Yeah, so it's gotten some upgrades. It now has a perk that says if I match damage types,
02:46that I do more damage for every other shot in the magazine. Additionally, it's now able
02:53to be masterworked, so you can get it to drop orbs. And finally, like all snipers, it got
03:00the new and improved Sniper Scope updates that makes it a lot more reliable in general and
03:06just, they feel so good. They're so crispy.
03:09Now is the Sniper Scope updates, was that part of the Go Fast?
03:14Uh, no, actually. That is coming with Season 3.
03:18Okay. Yeah, so we should say, oh, congratulations. Did everyone else finish their strike challenge?
03:23Or was that just me?
03:25Uh...
03:25I did it? Okay. I'm actually going to have to warp out here, guys, and go turn in these
03:28tokens.
03:30So, yeah, so Warmind's coming May 8th. It's got a few new strikes, new destination, a bunch
03:37of other stuff that we're going to talk about as we kind of go through the strike. But Season
03:403 is also hitting that day, right? So, um, there's going to be some updates, uh, kind
03:45of throughout the game and the sandbox too, I guess, right?
03:48That's right. Uh, we're doing a big sweeping pass on exotic weapons, uh, adding their masterworks
03:54and taking, tuning up several of them to make them, uh, significantly more potent, I will
03:59say.
04:00Okay. Okay. And will those work kind of the same way that the masterworks system work for
04:04the legendaries?
04:06So the difference in the exotic masterworks versus legendary masterworks is the legendary,
04:11uh, excuse me, the exotic masterwork perk is built, hand-built for the exotic that it's
04:15attached to.
04:16Okay.
04:16And so you don't re-roll those, but you do get the orb generation perk included and then
04:20a bonus, uh, that, like I said, is hand-built for the specific exotic.
04:25Gotcha.
04:26Yeah.
04:26And is this part of kind of along the same lines of thinking, oops, is that first death?
04:32That's number one.
04:32That is number one.
04:33Okay. All right. Well, I, I'm the outsider here. I don't, I don't work for Bungie, so.
04:37It's okay.
04:38Um, so is that part of kind of a, an overall philosophy, um, that you guys have with exotics
04:45just by kind of really trying to make them seem much more special than, you know, most of
04:50the legendaries in the game?
04:52Uh, yeah, we want to, uh, we're in a good place right now, I would say.
04:55that we can, we have space to allow exotics to, to breathe even, even more than we have
05:00been able to do in the past.
05:01And so, uh, we're looking at just ramping them up, you know, taking them to 11 and, and,
05:07and letting them truly be exotic.
05:09And so I think that's what people are going to see in the season three passes.
05:12We, we just sort of lifted everything and feet, you know, this, if this weapon is kind
05:17of something cool that does this thing, then we make it do that thing that much harder.
05:22is great.
05:23We just push it.
05:25Uh, are there any other, uh, updates to maybe kind of some of your favorite exotics that you
05:31want to talk about?
05:32New, new, yeah, I don't want to spoil anything, but I will say New Fighting Lion is real good.
05:39Really?
05:39Real good.
05:40Okay.
05:41Yeah.
05:41Interesting.
05:43Um, that was one, that was a weapon that I always really wanted to love.
05:46Well, you, you gotta love it.
05:48Okay.

05:49It's real good.
05:52Graviton Lance, Sunset, getting some pretty good updates too.
05:55Yeah.
05:56Yeah.
05:56Uh, one of our, one of our coworkers was very excited about the updates to, uh, to Graviton
06:01Lance, which we were talking about earlier.
06:03Uh, there's also, uh, some other stuff coming in season three.
06:06Um, I think there's some Crucible updates, right?
06:08You guys are, uh, introducing a rank system?
06:10That's true.
06:11Uh, Crucible ranks drop.
06:13The PVP team is incredibly excited to see what people do.
06:17And I think it's, um, it's coming at a great time.
06:19Like when we roll in the exotic changes, the sandbox will have seen a pretty, pretty massive
06:24facelift, facelift over the last couple of months.
06:26And, uh, yeah, I think it's, it's a great time to watch that come together.
06:30So you're, you're referring, and I kind of mentioned a little bit earlier, but we're,
06:34we're talking now, uh, a couple of weeks after the go fast update.
06:38That's right.
06:38Uh, which was the, which was the biggest update to the Destiny 2 sandbox to date, right?
06:43Correct.
06:44And so what were, what were kind of your goals with that?
06:46And then what, what have you seen as far as the community's response?
06:49Uh, yeah, we wanted to, uh, we wanted to make people feel more powerful, right?
06:53More in control, um, more capable and competent, uh, at what they do in the game, you know?
07:00And so we did a bunch of, uh, weapons work, uh, to make a, to bring a lot of weapons
07:05back
07:06up to the forefront to allow people basically to run the loadouts that they wanted to run,
07:10right?
07:10To try and keep them from feeling like they were being, uh, pigeonholed into something
07:14they weren't, weren't that interested in.
07:16And then, um, additionally, we, you know, we crank mobility, hence the name, go fast update.
07:22Yep.
07:22Uh, we changed some movement modes for Titans and Warlocks to give them more control and
07:26more speed.
07:27Uh, we touched several supers, like just in general did a massive, uh, update.
07:33Um, and it wasn't, you know, it's a step in, in the direction that we want to go.
07:36Uh, it was a pretty big step and one we feel really good about.
07:39Uh, but it is just a step.
07:41Uh, generally I think the community has been very positive about it.
07:45They've, they've, they've kind of echoed the, the sentiment that I just put out, right?
07:48It's like, it's, we definitely change stuff.
07:51It definitely feels better.
07:52Uh, there's a lot more stuff that we, we can and will do in the future, but man, it's
07:57a, it definitely has put us in a, in a, in a great spot.
08:00And I think rolling into the, the crucible rank stuff, like I was mentioning and also
08:04having Warmind drop together with the, with the remaining changes, I got the, I think
08:09it's going to be really fun.
08:10It's going to put destiny in a really good spot.
08:12That's great.
08:13Uh, so what, what, what is kind of the, the, the work that goes into implementing
08:18a change like that, that, that maybe isn't, you know, necessarily introducing a ton of
08:23content, but is touching so many different elements of the game, right?
08:27Yeah.
08:28It's, it's a, it's a shocking amount of work, honestly.
08:32It is, uh, yeah.
08:33So first we kind of figure out, you know, what we want to do, what our goals are, and then
08:37we have to actually go through and change the content.
08:40Uh, and then we, we iterate on those things, right?
08:43So we, we usually don't just make a change and it all, it all works or series of changes
08:47and it all works.
08:48We, we make several changes and then feel where we are, see how it's hitting our goals.
08:53And then we, we push it that much harder and kind of keep that process up while we're
08:57doing all that.
08:58We're also play testing, uh, because we have to see, uh, how the changes we made are affecting
09:03the game, uh, as a whole.
09:05And that means both PVE and PVP content because everything we touch, uh, changes effectively
09:12everything in the game, right?
09:13Like every activity you can play, uh, gets altered in some meaningful way when we touch
09:19the sandbox.
09:20And so, uh, and then the last, and I'm going to say the last step, but it is a massive
09:25step.
09:25Our test team who are incredible also go through and they, they look at it.
09:30Uh, they help us look at it from a balancing perspective, but they also have the, uh, large
09:35job of looking at it from a, did we actually break anything for real, right?
09:40And so they, they have to also go through all the activities and make sure it all comes
09:44together.
09:45Oh!
09:46Everybody's dying.
09:47What is happening?
09:47The gladiator is relentless.
09:49Um, I'm, I'm going to blame, uh, Evan for not telling me I needed to deposit the arc
09:54charges in order.
09:55Sorry, man.
09:56Apologize.
09:57Or maybe I just did it wrong.
09:58Um, yeah, you know, I, I think for, for maybe some people, they might look at certain
10:05games that are, you know, that are putting out, uh, you know, an update that, you know,
10:11rolls out every, you know, 48 hours or 24 hours or something like that.
10:15Um, but Destiny is a huge game with a lot of moving pieces.
10:20Yep.
10:21Absolutely.
10:22Uh, it is, yeah, it is not, not an easy endeavor, but I, you know, I think that's probably
10:27true for any team out there and, and, and teams that are doing this work.
10:31Like every dev in the industry, like knows this feeling and knows, uh, is working real
10:36hard to make sure they're delivering something incredible for the fans.
10:39and we are no different in that regard.
10:41We are absolutely, uh, just trying every day to make sure we're, we're pushing the
10:45game forward and making it better and better.
10:47Uh, and then it's just a matter of doing that in a, in a gigantic game that, you know, plays
10:54differently in every single activity and, uh, and affects a bunch of very unique and different,
11:00uh, players.
11:01Right.
11:02Mm-hmm.
11:03And so, um, Evan, uh, tell me a little bit about kind of the process that you all take
11:09when you're designing a new set of strikes.
11:11So usually when it comes to the strike, like most memorable part of a strike is, is the
11:16boss.
11:16So usually where we start is like, what is the boss experience that we want to build?
11:20Like, where do we feel like we have, uh, somebody we can add to the experience?
11:24Like where we have, or where have we, um, uh, done something in a while or what new mechanic
11:29we can add?
11:29So like here for this strike, we, you know, in D2, we really didn't, we didn't have a
11:34ultra scion boss or anything like that.
11:36And then from there we said, okay, what's the, the wrinkle we can add to that combatant?
11:40And what kind of fight do you want to go for?
11:41So it usually starts, uh, with the boss encounter.
11:44And then we go from there in determining, um, you know, the theme or what kind of mechanics
11:49we want to introduce.
11:50And then we have another, uh, set of folks that work on the, just the general, like the
11:54space that the players progress through some of the encounters that they're encountering
11:57along the way and, uh, you know, build it from there.
12:00But yeah, it all starts with the boss.
12:02Like that's how you usually, most players identify the strike is by the final encounter,
12:06by that climactic boss encounter.
12:07Right.
12:08Right.
12:08I was, uh, I was reminiscing here.
12:11Um, you know, picking up a new phase of destiny for the first time.
12:15Uh, remembering back to the, oh man.
12:18Um, when destiny two was first revealed and the first time that I played it,
12:22it was on, uh, um, what is the, the strike that, uh, has that drill that rotates?
12:29Oh yes.
12:30Um.
12:31The inverted spire.
12:31The invert, was that, that's what it was, right?
12:33Yeah.
12:34The inverted spire.
12:34Yep.
12:35Um, playing that for the first time, seeing these new enemy types, and then just encountering
12:39this giant drill.
12:41And, uh, I think like a three stage boss fight that went through a couple different locations.
12:45Yeah.
12:45Um, yeah, that was, that was, uh, that was really fun.
12:49Right.
12:50So, alright, we made it through here guys, right?
12:53We did.
12:53I was gonna find these last men of strike.
12:54No one died.
12:55Um, no problem.
12:58Um, seems like that no, no, that no respawn indicator should be disappearing.
13:03No, no, man.
13:04Who knows?
13:05You're ultra hard man.
13:07Um, permadeath.
13:08Um.
13:08Permadeath.
13:09So, let's talk a little bit about some of the other stuff that is in Warmind, right?
13:12There's three total strikes?
13:14Yep.
13:15Three strikes.
13:15So, we got two strikes in addition to this one.
13:17Two that take place on, uh, Polaris.
13:20Um, part of the main theme of Warmind is, uh, it's kind of focused on Rasputin.
13:24So, revealing a little bit of the mystery of, uh, who Rasputin is, and what his role Destiny
13:29is, and also probably bringing up some new questions.
13:32And, um, we're bringing in, or introducing a new NPC in game with, uh, Anna Bray.
13:38Um, the Brays being the, uh, creators of, uh, Rasputin.
13:41So, we've hinted at Anna Bray and the Bray family in, uh, past, uh, lore through Grimoire
13:47and other fiction.
13:48But, we're finally making a fully realized character with her, uh, uh, in the, in the
13:53Warmind expansion.
13:54Cool.
13:55And, is there anything that, um, you guys maybe kind of looked at as far as the response
14:00to, uh, Osiris?
14:03Yeah.
14:04That affected the development of episode two?
14:06Yeah.
14:06So, after we, uh, you know, came back from holiday break and, uh, seeing the reaction
14:10to Osiris, like, we know that we need to give players, uh, you know, more things to pursue
14:14and more goals to achieve.
14:15And so, we, uh, added a, uh, all new, uh, ritual public event on Polaris.
14:22It's akin to, if you've played Destiny 1, similar to something with Quart of Orcs.
14:26So, we came back, we looked at what we could do.
14:29We used Quart of Orcs and Archon's Forge as examples of something we've done successfully
14:33in the past.
14:34We built a ritual public event in that vein, but with a new kind of wrinkle to it.
14:39So, um, we're looking forward to seeing how players, uh, react to the addition of this
14:43new ritual public event on the destination that they can, uh, play, uh, week over week
14:49as they, uh, pursue, um, new gear that we're adding to, to the, uh, to the expansion.
14:55Uh, alright.
14:56So, it seems like we've stumbled into a, perhaps some unfriendly territory here.
15:01Um, this seems like, this seems like a room that all of us will survive in.
15:05Yeah.
15:06Very easily.
15:06Round rooms are always ominous.
15:09Uh, so, uh, we, we saw a little bit of footage and, uh, got some hands-on with the escalation
15:15protocol earlier, and it is extremely hard and really fun.
15:20Um, like you're saying, I, I think it, it's a really cool kind of spin on, um, some of
15:25the kind of the wave-based activities of Quart of Orcs.
15:28Was it, was there anything that you all learned from Quart of Orcs as far as kind of like, you
15:32know, here's kind of the right way to, to do waves or to keep this interesting or here's
15:36kind of how we stagger.
15:37Yeah.
15:37Yeah.
15:38Yeah.
15:38So, for Quart of Orcs, um, you know, we kept it very focused to one, one contained area
15:43on the hive ship and that worked and we also had like the token system.
15:46So, you had to, you know, grind to earn tokens to, to get the different difficulty in waves.
15:51And, you know, we decided to make, you know, the hive, the, uh, escalation protocol.
15:56You know, I, when I say accessible, I don't mean accessible as in it's easier, but like
16:00just easier to get into, but still make it hard.
16:02So, it's easier to trigger, easier to happen and it uses the whole of the public parts of
16:08the destination.
16:09So, it's not just focused to one key pocket.
16:10So, as you're roaming around the destination, uh, through the, uh, through the public areas,
16:15you'll be seeing a high, uh, escalation protocol happening in multiple instances.
16:20And you can choose to engage and help out a fire team that's struggling to get through
16:23the waves.
16:24Or you can just kind of sit by and, uh, participate in the patrols and just stay out of the
16:29way
16:29while they're taking on like these, uh, these epic tier bosses as they're, uh, going for
16:33their, uh, new seer of gear and weapons.
16:35Yeah.
16:36So, so that was something like super cool, right?
16:38Like we can, you can have what, like up to nine people potentially in one area trying
16:44to tackle this.
16:44So, yeah, it's, I mean, it's, it's, it's really cool to be just kind of cruising along
16:48and maybe you're, you know, on doing something else, doing an adventure or looking for a lost
16:52sector.
16:53And, you know, you see, you know, two fire teams engaged in the escalation protocol and
16:57your fire team is off doing something else.
16:59And you can just decide to jump in, help out for a few waves, try to get to the end.
17:03And then if you dig, if you get there, move on to something else that, or if not stick
17:06around, try it again, but it's totally free form coming in and out.
17:09And, you know, we wanted to keep it that way.
17:11So, you know, you're not always waiting for somebody for the public event.
17:15Like it's some, like there always will be high traffic going through the public spaces
17:18to help you out in the event.
17:20That's super cool.
17:21And it's, it requires much more of an investment than just a public event, right?
17:26Oh yeah.
17:26Yeah.
17:27Seven waves, I think.
17:28Seven waves and escalating difficulty and bosses and the, you know, and very powerful,
17:34like the, the hardest combatants in the, in, in the game are in escalation protocol.
17:39So you have to be ready.
17:41You have to be prepared with the strategy and, you know, be ready to grind for a bit
17:44as you progress through the waves.
17:47Now, Josh, I know you're going to tell me there's some awesome stuff.
17:49There is some awesome stuff.
17:51Yes.
17:51There are, there are new weapons, super cool art wise.
17:56Additionally, they have some of the, the newer perks we've made that we made just to start
18:02shipping with these weapons.
18:04And so while we might roll them out to additional legendaries in the future, right now, those
18:08weapons are the only way to get your hands on them.
18:11There's an incredibly good shotgun, an awesome sniper rifle.
18:14The sniper rifle, for example, has a new perk called box breathing that lets you, if you hold
18:18ADS for long enough, then you do and you get an incredible damage boost to your precision
18:23damage.
18:24Huh.
18:25And so, you know, excellent for PVE snipers.
18:28Right.
18:31Perhaps used on the escalation protocol themselves.
18:34Perhaps.
18:34Yes.
18:35There's a real moment in escalation protocol where you're like, wow, that's a lot of
18:38ogres.
18:39And then there's another moment where you're like, nope, I was wrong.
18:41This is a lot of ogres.
18:42Yeah, totally.
18:44Um, yeah, it really threw off my kind of calibration.
18:47What, what was it Josh?
18:48I think, did you confirm that the in, like the canon term for a group of ogres is a murder
18:52of ogres?
18:53It is a murder of ogres.
18:54Okay.
18:54Okay.
18:54So we can get that.
18:56That's in the grimoire.
18:57Maybe not, it hasn't been revealed yet, but it's an exclusive reveal.
19:01Exactly.
19:04So, uh, you know, as we talked about, I'm rolling with the Syros regime, uh, classic exotic
19:10from Destiny 1.
19:11How do you all look back at kind of the, the arsenal that you've built out and decide,
19:17hey, it's time to bring something back?
19:20Uh, yeah, I mean, it depends.
19:22Like there's a, there, there are a lot of D1 weapons that people love.
19:27And so we want to, uh, honor those things and bring them back, uh, in interesting ways
19:32and, and, and when it's the right time.
19:34But we also don't want to just bombard people with, uh, with reprise weapons either.
19:40And so it's, uh, it's, yeah, it's, it's hard to, to know exactly if we're doing, if we're
19:46always doing the right thing.
19:47And so.
19:48Right.
19:48We want to make sure we're given a, given a great mix of new, awesome stuff, but also,
19:53hey, here's, here's this thing.
19:54Like if you missed this or you were a favorite of Syros, for example, then like, here, go get
19:59it, right?
20:00It's yours.
20:00Right.
20:01So it's just a matter of making sure we, we, we have enough stuff that it's both new
20:08and regional stuff that people are going to be happy with.
20:15That seemed like a terrible tether.
20:17And then it worked.
20:18And it worked out.
20:19So.
20:20Pro level tether.
20:23And how, how do you all decide, I mean, obviously you have a very vocal kind of active
20:28community.
20:29Um, how do you all decide that something is like, Hey, this is something that we need
20:33to try and kind of work on right now versus, you know, maybe this is something that we should
20:38look at, um, kind of in a larger update in the future.
20:41Yeah.
20:41That's a, that's a great, super difficult question.
20:45Um, well, it's the most difficult part of the strike.
20:48So it's all right.
20:48This is perfect timing.
20:49Perfect timing.
20:50Uh, so let me, just to be clear, you asked the question and then died, right?
20:56Um, yeah, someone, someone manipulating AI.
21:02So, yeah, so I think, you know, Destiny is a, is a giant game.
21:07Um, it's, it's huge.
21:10It's got a lot of very distinct, uh, players who play, whether it be PvE or PvP.
21:17But I think even within, in those areas, you have, you have people that want different
21:22things out of, out of those modes, right?
21:24Even there are PvP players, uh, who are, who want one thing and PvP players that want another.
21:30And so, uh, we are also players of the game.
21:32Like we are, you know, I'm on almost every night playing, playing with my, uh, cousin and
21:38friends and people from work.
21:40And so, uh, we're also having these conversations about what we should do.
21:47Um, and it's just a matter of listening, taking feedback, hearing what everybody has to say,
21:52what they're looking for, what they'd like to see from, from Destiny.
21:55And then thinking that through, like, you know, like what can we do that helps, helps
22:00the game move forward in the right way that makes Destiny a better game.
22:03And more importantly, makes it better for, for all of those different players and just
22:07attacking that as best we can.
22:09Cool.
22:10Well, it seems like things are in a great shape.
22:12There's already been, uh, a lot of kind of, I think, improvements that have been rolled
22:15out in the last couple months.
22:16And it looks like a really bright future.
