00:30Hello and welcome to Nine's Wide World of Sports and this clash in the Benson & Hedges World Series Cup
00:34between England and Australia at the Gabba.
00:37It should be a marvellous game here. We pick up play now in the very first over.
00:42No runs on the board. Lawson is bowling to Gould and in the commentary box it's Tony Gregg and Fred
00:47Truman.
00:49And England off the mark. It's the last ball of Lawson's over.
00:53Flick down to Hogg at Fineleg for one. England no wicket for one.
01:00Ian Gould faces Geoff Thompson.
01:04That's into the gap. Nicely placed by Gould.
01:07Looking for the second and it's... Oh, it's going to be a run out. He's got it.
01:11It's up there between Cook and Gould and Gould is out run out.
01:16Hark the fieldsman there. He did very well.
01:19Didn't get overexcited about that. Threw it straight over the top of the stumps.
01:23And Carl Rackermann removed the bells.
01:27And Gould is looking for two. Immediately hit that ball.
01:32God, my help. He's got round to it. Gould is off back.
01:36And Geoff Cook has stopped.
01:39Rackermann's taken the bells off and England have lost their first wicket.
01:42It's one for one.
01:45England supporters scattered amongst a great group of Queenslanders who are out supporting Australia.
01:54It's in the air. What a good play. Beautifully taken by David Hooks.
01:58Down to his left. Out to his hand. And that's the end of Geoff Cook. What a catch.
02:05Catches don't come better than that one.
02:08Geoff Cook pushing it.
02:10The ball trying to get down towards third man and David Hooks there.
02:16Left-handed. Beautiful catch.
02:19That's England's second wicket down now.
02:22Look at the joy on those faces.
02:25They pick up that second wicket.
02:27England two for ten.
02:30Slow ball.
02:31And he's got it.
02:34Rod Marsh has dropped one down the leg side.
02:37And remember, that's where they've got David Gower on numerous occasions.
02:41And that really was a pretty straightforward catch.
02:43He might have been done for pace a little bit because I think it was a slower ball.
02:47Rod Marsh doing well to get so far across actually.
02:51David Gower facing Thompson.
02:52Short ball. It's in the air and over the top.
02:55That was a little lucky there for Gower.
02:58It's gone down to the boundary behind the weekkeeper for four.
03:02Good quick bouncer from Thompson.
03:04That's the end of the over. Two for 27.
03:07That's a fine shot from David Gower.
03:10Back in an over pitching.
03:14That ball just beats John Dyson into the fence.
03:19As you can see, six wides already.
03:21The extras amount in to 11.
03:25Gower picks that one up beautifully.
03:27And it hits the fence on the full.
03:29Magnificent shot from David Gower.
03:30Hog to Gower.
03:34Oh, and it's a good delivery from Rodney Hog.
03:37And that's the wicket that Australia wanted.
03:39David Gower has been dropped earlier in his innings.
03:44And just getting a little inside edge there from Rodney Hog and dragging it back onto the stunts.
03:49As I recall, I think it's about the third time that David Gower has done that in this particular summer.
03:55He's done it twice in tests.
03:57Once when he'd scored a century in Adelaide.
03:58He did the same thing, dragging the ball back from outside the off stump while attempting the drive off the
04:04back foot when he should have been forward.
04:06This time Batham gets it.
04:07That's four.
04:08That's the way he plays.
04:09That's the way he should play.
04:10He picked the right delivery on that occasion.
04:12In the slot, one of the rear half volleys from Rodney Hog.
04:15Rodney Hog, Thompson again.
04:19Oh, and he fed it at that short run and got a touch.
04:22He didn't go after it.
04:23Marsh does the rest and Thompson breaks through a good change.
04:28The wicket that Australia needed, four for 71.
04:31That exactly backs up what I was talking about, Bill.
04:34That not the similar shot, the one previously.
04:36But certainly a lackadaisical shot from Alan Lamb.
04:39And one that shouldn't have been played under the circumstances.
04:42England in need of a partnership.
04:44Alan Lamb out for 19 and England crashed to four for 71.
04:48Jeff Thompson to Botham.
04:52Safely away for four.
04:55That was a delicate little chip from Liam Botham.
04:57Although it went in the air, it was quite safe.
05:00Chappell to Derek Randall.
05:03That's the first one he's bowled out there.
05:07And Randall's been waiting for it.
05:14And four runs.
05:16Rackerman was the fielder.
05:24That's a beautiful stroke for four from Randall.
05:27A little bit of room there outside the off stump again.
05:30And he takes full advantage of it.
05:33Four for 110.
05:33And 10 England in the 28th over.
05:37Chappell to Derek Randall.
05:39Well, it's a beautiful shot by Randall.
05:40Way up in the air.
05:41Over the extra cover boundary for six.
05:44Well, you don't see many sixes hit in that direction.
05:46Derek Randall following through and hitting a beautiful six way over the top of extra cover.
05:52Four for 123.
05:56And for Australia, Rackerman now being brought back into the attack.
06:02His figures know we get for 23 and five.
06:06Lawson one for six in five.
06:09He's been the most economical of the bowlers.
06:14Well, that's over the top there.
06:15There's a man down there.
06:16This won't be dropped.
06:17David Hooks is underneath it.
06:18He's out.
06:19Both of them out.
06:20Caught by David Hooks.
06:22Down on the deep extra cover boundary.
06:24Both of them trying to repeat the shot played by Randall, which went for six.
06:27And that's a big wicket for Australia.
06:33Not quite getting old of this.
06:37Ball possibly moving a bit off the seam and screwing it out towards deep extra cover where
06:42David Hooks makes no mistake.
06:45He pouches that.
06:46And that's a big wicket for Australia.
06:48England now five for 128.
06:52We've got a pig on the ground.
06:53With both of them written on the side of it.
07:01Well, there he is.
07:02He's got the Australian flag on.
07:10Well, the policeman down there trying to get a hold of both of them, the pig.
07:16I tell you what, he doesn't really want to know.
07:23He looks a bit nervous too, the policeman down there.
07:27Trying to get a few people off the ground who have gathered around to watch this.
07:34He's had 11 balls and he's not scored a run yet.
07:37Outside the off stump, he's got him out.
07:40So Jeff Desti out after facing 12 balls, caught by Marsh off the bowling of Rackerman for a duck.
07:51Outside the off stump, going for the drive.
07:55Marsh taking the catch and the umpire judging.
07:58And that is out.
08:00So that's the loss of England's.
08:04Sixth wicket.
08:08Trevor just out for naught.
08:10Sixth for 138.
08:13They want to be up around the 200 mark.
08:17In this innings to give themselves a chance.
08:21There should be a couple here.
08:24Jeff Miller will get back as Jeff Lawson has a long run round.
08:28He's feeling practically square and he's got to run down to the very fine light position to retrieve that ball.
08:35He had to run 40 or 50 yards to pick that ball up and return it to Rod Marsh.
08:44A good throw.
08:46Beautiful with the gloves.
08:51Oh, a little mix up there for a second then.
08:52Oh, a huge mix up.
08:53And he's gone.
08:55Good thinking by Greg Chappell.
08:57There was easily a run there had they gone in the first instance.
09:01And have a look at the disappointment on the face of Jeff Miller.
09:04A terrible mix up.
09:06Greg Chappell did well because he didn't have a shy.
09:08He didn't have to.
09:09Simply lobbed it back to the stuffs.
09:13Well, I don't know what was going off here.
09:16Look at this for a mix up.
09:17I'm not joking that Greg Chappell could have got back himself and taken the bails off.
09:21What bad run in between the two England players there.
09:52So that's a wicket thrown away.
09:54And that brings up his 50.
09:57Oh, and a good delivery from Jeff Thompson.
10:00And that will improve their situation as far as getting through the overs is concerned.
10:05Lawson to Randall.
10:07But Derek Graham will listen.
10:08He's given himself a bit of room.
10:11And you can't get any more accurate than that.
10:13Middle stump right out of the ground.
10:16Jeff Lawson-Yorker.
10:19Right on target.
10:22This is a superb piece of bone.
10:25That is your genuine walker.
10:27Rackamond Cowens.
10:29Well, he's gone straight in the air.
10:31Lawson with a safe pair of hands is coming in.
10:33And that's it for England.
10:35England all out for 182.
10:37Fine performance by the Australian bowlers.
10:40Well, there was nothing outstanding there about the Australian's bowling effort in the sense that they gave England an extra
10:46three overs in which to bat with wides and no balls.
10:49I thought that was a very curious business out there.
10:52Not very much more curious than the two runouts England managed to perpetrate on themselves.
10:58So it was needed to have a run rate of 3.66 per over to reach that 183 figure.
11:04Nothing really startling about that.
11:06But the runs were on the board for England and the Australians had to make them.
11:09Kim Hughes dropped himself down in the batting order but still opened up with John Dyson and Kepler Vessels.
11:14Here's the second over.
11:15One run on the board.
11:16The bowler, two vessels, is Norman Cowens.
11:19And in the commentary box, it's Tony Gregg and Fred Truman.
11:24Side off stump and Vessels forces away.
11:26And that one barely flies away down to a fine third man position.
11:31The flags come out.
11:33A big cheer for four to Vessels.
11:36Bob Willis to John Dyson.
11:38Oh, good shot by Dyson.
11:39Beautifully placed.
11:41Buckley overpitched there by Willis.
11:43Dyson playing a lovely cover drive.
11:47Botham to Dyson.
11:49Botham's giving Dyson plenty of opportunity outside the off stump.
11:54He likes the square cut.
11:56Yes, he bowls now to John Dyson.
11:58That one's wide and John Dyson just hitting through that cover drive and dropping it just inside the boundary fence
12:07at mid-off.
12:07That's a very good shot from Dyson.
12:10Botham to Vessels.
12:15And there's an appeal for a catch down leg side.
12:18And Kepler Vessels has been given out at his back to the umpire.
12:25But he was obviously alerted by the shouts of the Englishman that he was on his way.
12:32And Kepler Vessels seems completely oblivious of the fact that he's been given out.
12:37He had his back to the umpire, as Ian said.
12:39And there must have been the thinnest of edges there.
12:42Gould is absolutely confident that Vessels hit it with a back of his back.
12:45So was Botham.
12:47One for 41.
12:50Botham to Greg Chappell.
12:54Plenty of room outside of Stump.
12:56And the Gabba crowd not being let down by the hero.
13:00He started off in very good fashion.
13:0349 for the loss of one wicket.
13:08Brings up the 50 with a straight hit using his feet to Victor Marks.
13:12Not being tied down, John Dyson.
13:14England bowlers not swinging the ball anything like the Australians did when they were bowling.
13:20That's a good shot by John Dyson.
13:23Flicking that off his feet.
13:25Turning the wrist through on the square leg position.
13:29And to the boundary like a little rocket.
13:33Marks to Chappell.
13:36Close.
13:37Had to be close.
13:38Maybe just outside the line of the off stump.
13:40The off spinner.
13:41Chappell playing for the crease.
13:44Little McConnell not responding.
13:49Long reach.
13:51Nimble on his feet.
13:58He goes to the big hit.
13:59There's a man down there.
14:00He's under it.
14:00It's Jeff Miller.
14:01He's looking at the side screen.
14:02And it's four.
14:06Went over to his head.
14:07Jeff Miller.
14:07Not all that confident there.
14:09Mr. Nully got a hand to that.
14:10The man was straight.
14:12Greg Chappell's asking for six.
14:14Asking whether he is being told by umpire Peter McCollum.
14:17He's got to clear the side screen.
14:19They're conferring the umpires.
14:20Watch Jeff Miller.
14:21He's not all that confident.
14:23He's back.
14:28Umpires conferring as to whether that is six or not.
14:31The ground rule probably should be.
14:33That has to clear the side screen completely.
14:37Changing the call to six.
14:43So six to Greg Chappell.
14:46Marks to John Dyson.
14:48It's a good shot.
14:49It's just a fraction short.
14:50And John Dyson in good touch.
14:52Picked it up quickly.
14:53And ripped that forward a square for four runs.
15:0123 of 25 balls is not bad.
15:04In terms of the strike rate.
15:12Oh, that's a good shot.
15:13An inside out shot.
15:15One bounce into the crowd.
15:17And the boundary at point.
15:23That's a great shot by Chappell.
15:24He's decided to go after the ball.
15:26Open up the blade.
15:27And what a beautiful shot.
15:29Straight over the.
15:29Over between point and cover.
15:32And one bounce.
15:34Straight over the top.
15:35Botham to Dyson.
15:38That swings in.
15:39And he's out.
15:40Dyson has hit that one.
15:42Straight down the throat of Vic Park.
15:44He's feeling it lit on.
15:46Well, he tried to hit that one over his head and down towards the side screen and didn't middle it.
15:50It was an in-swinger goal by Botham.
15:52He went a little bit wide there and bent himself over backwards.
15:57Dyson really trying to force that one and got the inside edge and he's out.
16:02But there's more trouble for England out there.
16:04I'd say that Ian Botham is on a lot of trouble with that knee.
16:09And there's Australia now to the 95.
16:12Botham to Chappell.
16:13And when Chappell hit that in the air, he's could be out.
16:16He's gone.
16:17Straight down Jesty's throat.
16:20Jesty fielding in a position at deep extra cover.
16:23In that sweeping position we talked about earlier.
16:26Chappell playing once again that inside-out shot.
16:28And this time heading it straight to Jesty.
16:34Yes, he couldn't have picked the man out better.
16:36Straight down his throat.
16:38Regulation catch.
16:40Chappell going for his shots the whole time he was in there.
16:45But now Australia, 3 for 98.
16:50Oh, and there's a big appeal there for a stumping and Gould is not happy about that at all.
16:55Well, it'll be very interesting to look at that replay.
17:05Drags the foot and that looks to me.
17:10I might have to look at another one of that.
17:13He did lift his foot and brought it down.
17:15Notice there the glove has broken the wicket.
17:17But in any event it was very close.
17:21The rule is that if your toe is on the line, you're out.
17:25Pick marks to Borda.
17:29Oh, good shot.
17:35Now, Staggy, you've seen Borda play that shot.
17:40I won't say tons of times, but many, many times.
17:43And there's still no man there to cut it off.
17:46He plays it beautifully.
17:47It's very straight.
17:49Norman Cowans to Hooks.
17:51Oh, he's got that through.
17:53That's a glorious shot.
17:56Now, Alambora's coming down to say so.
18:02Oh, he's done it again.
18:04Two great shots, but that's not the place for Norman Cowans to bowl.
18:09And David Gower is coming across to the word.
18:13Now, in fact, he's going across onto the offside.
18:16Great shot by David Hooks.
18:18Just the type of height he likes it outside the off stump.
18:22It was a great percentage of his runs in that very area.
18:25And Cowans to Borda.
18:30Good shot from Alambora.
18:35Tying straight back.
18:39David Hooks in tremendous form.
18:42Lofts that one bounce into the square leg fence.
18:44That was a great shot.
18:48And the same spot on us.
18:49And that one goes through the offside field.
18:52So, David Hooks looking for an early finish to this game.
18:58Six boundaries to David Hooks.
19:01Two of them in this over.
19:04There's an enormous hit.
19:05That one going out and it's just going to clear the boundary.
19:09And lands on the dog track.
19:12So, I think David Hooks quite keen to finish it off this over.
19:18It takes it up to 176.
19:20Australia needs seven more.
19:2314 off the over so far.
19:30That one's over cover.
19:32That'll bounce just inside the boundary fence.
19:35And that brings up David Hooks 50.
19:37And it's really come with a rush the last few minutes.
19:46Three to win.
19:48One ball to go.
19:5118 off this over so far.
19:5850 up in 55 deliveries.
20:05And there we go.
20:06David Hooks wafting to mid-on.
20:08And he certainly has achieved his ambition of finishing it in this over.
20:1222 runs coming from the last over.
20:15As David Hooks crashes his way to 54 not out.
20:20Alan Border at the other end was 30 not out.
20:23And Bob Willis' figures taking a real hammering in that last over.
20:29What a marvellous finish that was with David Hooks playing every stroke imaginable there
20:34off Bob Willis to bring the game to a sudden conclusion.
20:3741 overs only were needed for that three for 184.
20:41And a great partnership there between Hooks and Border.
20:4486 unbroken in only 53 minutes.
20:47Everyone had a hand in it.
20:48Vessels 19, Dyson 40 and Greg Chappell 30.
20:52Then that great last wicket partnership.
20:54Three for 184.
20:56And the English bowlers could do nothing at all about it.
20:58Bob Willis the captain bowled only 7 overs.
21:01Cowan's 9, Botham 8.
21:02And Jesty, well he bowled only 1.
21:04And the most successful and the best bowler, Ian Botham.
21:07Three for 29 in 8 overs.
21:09Well Kim Hughes had the right idea there when he said he thought it could be David Hooks day.
21:14It certainly was and it was Australia's day as well.
