00:00:00I
00:00:30And a very good afternoon everybody. Welcome to Perth for the first match in the Chapel Hadley series, the Commonwealth Bank series, part two if you like. South Africa have gone but the Kiwis are here and ready to go in Perth.
00:00:44Ricky Ponding has won the toss. The Australians will bat first. Conditions are excellent though it is extremely hot out there. Around 35, 36 degrees. There's the Australian side. Just one change in it from the one beaten by South Africa a couple of days ago here. Sean Tate is back and Ben Hilfenhaus misses out. All eyes on Sean Marsh and particularly David Warner at the top of the order there. A lot of strength in the middle order. It's good to see Michael Clarke fit and playing again though he didn't do anything of interest the other evening.
00:01:14He'll be very determined to make an impact on this game and get Australia moving again. Get them playing to their potential. There's the New Zealand side. One or two problems with injuries. Some new faces to keep an eye on. Martin Guptill and Neil Broome were underway here. The first ball has been bowled and right in behind it is Sean Marsh. Kyle Mills, a familiar figure, bowled that ball. Tim Southie, Jeetan Patel, Ian O'Brien and Daniel Vettori make up the New Zealand bowlers on this occasion.
00:01:44Though Jacob O'Brien is missing and Scott Styris is missing and so too Jesse Ryder. So it's a lot of beleaguered New Zealand side but it's not the very best side that they can put on the park.
00:01:56Just an iota of swing there alongside me and the commentary box are Ian Chappell and Adam Gillis.
00:02:06Good afternoon Mark and all the viewers out there. Fantastic day here. Sean Marsh out there already surviving a couple of deliveries but the crowd is flowing in. We've been told again it's a sold out day.
00:02:20And Perth public will be looking for a more positive result no doubt from Friday but shaping up for a beauty.
00:02:32Oh there's a good delivery. What good delivery.
00:02:37Yeah good afternoon Mark and hello to all of our viewers.
00:02:40Yeah both teams are missing a few quite a few players through injury.
00:02:45It's just that New Zealand really haven't got the depth to be able to afford to particularly guys like Jacob O'Brien have fellas like O'Brien missing.
00:02:56They have a fairly small player pool to choose from.
00:03:02They just can't afford to have guys from I guess Styris as well.
00:03:06Scott Styris very experienced player missing.
00:03:09They just can't afford to have those guys missing.
00:03:13It's a good start by Kyle Mills.
00:03:16Nice steady line.
00:03:17One of the things Vittori said he was unhappy about after the game against the Prime Minister's 11 the other day was the lines and the bowlers bowled.
00:03:25He was really I think more than just disappointed pretty angry with the effort to defend a decent score batting first.
00:03:33McCollum made a hundred in that game.
00:03:38Ah that's a lovely way to start your day.
00:03:42Perfect cover drive from Sean Marsh.
00:03:44It's none for four.
00:03:51Has it done enough?
00:03:53Where is it pitched?
00:03:54It's a good ask.
00:03:57We saw Tim Southie swing the ball at the Gabba right at the start of the summer.
00:04:01And there's a hint of it there for him too.
00:04:05I guess the one thing in Perth that you've got to be wary of as an umpire is the bounce when you're looking at LBWs.
00:04:11So many times in Perth the ball is bouncing over the top but from the thud of that one it didn't sound as though it hit high on the pad.
00:04:24Lovely.
00:04:25Very nice.
00:04:26It's a superstar this from Sean Marsh.
00:04:29Playing well within himself.
00:04:32Making sure his timing is in order.
00:04:33Well he's been in terrific form all the way through.
00:04:37He was in excellent form against South Africa.
00:04:41He'd be just annoyed with himself that he hasn't really made the most of this brilliant form.
00:04:46But 100 can quickly turn that around.
00:04:51He certainly looks in real control of his game.
00:04:58Oh great catch.
00:05:00Really sharp.
00:05:01You had to be as tall as Peter Fulton is to put it off to.
00:05:04A bright start by Sean Marsh comes to an end.
00:05:11You're right another bright start.
00:05:13The look of frustration there on his face as he walks off.
00:05:18He's just done everything right so far in this inning.
00:05:20The full delivery just didn't control it.
00:05:22Chipped underneath it and beautifully taken by the very tall Peter Fulton.
00:05:27He was frustrated.
00:05:28He hit it beautifully on Friday night.
00:05:30Taken nicely by Emler.
00:05:31But again here a good start for Sean Marsh.
00:05:3315 but it's nipped in the bud.
00:05:351 for 20.
00:05:40The first game in the second Commonwealth Bank series of the summer.
00:05:44New Zealand have made a very good start to it.
00:05:46There was an enthusiastic cheer for Ricky Ponte.
00:05:48As he was announced on his way to the middle.
00:05:51Once again there's great responsibility on his shoulders.
00:05:54New Zealand have got rid of Sean Marsh.
00:05:56Conceded just 20 runs in six and a half overs.
00:05:59They look very eager from the New Zealand side.
00:06:03Just a slightly different playing uniform from the one we've seen here previously in.
00:06:09They look athletic and keen.
00:06:11The bowling's been nice and tidy.
00:06:13There have been subtle changes of pace from Kyle Mills.
00:06:15What he's done is he's varied how he's held the ball.
00:06:21He's sometimes been seam up, sometimes across the seam.
00:06:24He's bowed the odd cutter.
00:06:25He has Marsh's wicket.
00:06:26Now the big prize.
00:06:27Ricky Ponting on strike.
00:06:28Good sharp catch this.
00:06:41Very good reflexes from the tall man.
00:06:45Caught it easily.
00:06:46Sean Marsh will be disappointed with himself.
00:06:50I mean, probably more than disappointed.
00:06:52He'll be annoyed with himself.
00:06:54When you can see the bloke right there in front of you.
00:06:56And you know the captain's put him there for a reason.
00:06:59And you hole out to him pretty well straight away.
00:07:01The run rate is hovering around about two and a half runs and over on what looks like a good pitch to me.
00:07:08Fast outfield.
00:07:10All the conditions are right.
00:07:13In the air and he's out.
00:07:15He's hit that one straight to short extra cover as well.
00:07:19So Warner having used up 17 deliveries.
00:07:23He's out to another soft dismissal.
00:07:27Very good bowling and very good field placing.
00:07:30There's been a bit of thought going to this from Daniel Vittori and the bowlers.
00:07:35And it's two for 23.
00:07:37I think David Warner was loading up to go mid-wicket.
00:07:40He bails out of it and bunts it straight to Peter Fulton.
00:07:44As you say, good field placing.
00:07:46But gee, you can stay clear of a short cover as a batsman.
00:07:49Two for 23.
00:07:52Michael Clarke is the new batsman.
00:07:56And on Friday, Michael Clarke got nought from four balls.
00:08:00So he'll want to rectify that situation.
00:08:03And indeed, the overall position the Australians find themselves in here.
00:08:07The run rate is way below their normal run rate.
00:08:10And they've already lost two wickets for 23.
00:08:14Kiwis are bowling a good length, a good line.
00:08:17And they've got a good field set.
00:08:23Mills has one ball to go in this over.
00:08:24He's got figures of two for 12.
00:08:26Rock-solid forward defensive.
00:08:34Two for 23.
00:08:40So two for 26.
00:08:41And 10 overs have now been bowled.
00:08:44So New Zealand taking the bowling power play.
00:08:49Pretty well standard stuff.
00:08:50Most of the sides take it straight away.
00:08:52And it might encourage, I'd imagine, Dan Vittorio is looking to encourage
00:08:59Ponting and Clarke to try to play some lofted shots
00:09:02or get it outside the inner ring
00:09:04at a time where they haven't really established themselves.
00:09:07We're just mentioning Paul Collingwood, the England player.
00:09:20There was a media conference the other day
00:09:22and they were asking what the England players were going to do.
00:09:27Are they going to play test matches in West Indies,
00:09:29which they're about to do?
00:09:30There's another tour coming up.
00:09:32There's a big season at home.
00:09:33And then there's the IPL.
00:09:34And they asked Collingwood, they posed the question,
00:09:39all right, what do you think of all this?
00:09:41And he said, I think it's the last time you should ever hear
00:09:43a cricketer complain of his workload.
00:09:47That's a good comment.
00:09:49Very good comment.
00:09:56Well, it's a concentrated period, that is for sure, for workload.
00:10:00Australia, four tests in India, straight out here for five tests.
00:10:05So they've played nine tests in about 12 weeks.
00:10:08It's been a tough schedule that they have had.
00:10:10It's just the concentration of cricket.
00:10:12If you look back over a year, rarely do they overplay,
00:10:16but it's the concentration of times in the year
00:10:18where it can be an issue that everyone needs to be careful of.
00:10:21There was some quite interesting comments, too, from Mickey Arthur.
00:10:28One play to one on the onside.
00:10:29Mickey Arthur, of course, arrived back in.
00:10:33Oh, it's close.
00:10:34That might be out.
00:10:35That may well be out.
00:10:37Well, what a good throw.
00:10:39It looked to me as if Ponting wanted the run.
00:10:42He called for it.
00:10:43And I think he might be out by a few inches.
00:10:47Oh, he's gone by a foot.
00:10:49He is gone by a foot.
00:10:50Yes, he's got the bad news.
00:10:58He's got the bad news.
00:11:00Ricky Ponting is not happy with himself.
00:11:02You don't often see him too animated in situations like this,
00:11:08but he's very, very angry with himself with some justification.
00:11:13Well, the ball's going downwind.
00:11:14Maybe it got to the field quicker than Ponting imagined it could.
00:11:17Great pick-up, great throw.
00:11:20Gone.
00:11:20Everything had to be perfect for the Kiwis, and it was.
00:11:23The decision of Ponting not perfect.
00:11:25Three for 27.
00:11:26Well, David Hussey has now been sent to the crease.
00:11:35Boy, this is not good news.
00:11:37Ponting will be absolutely furious with himself.
00:11:40A couple of things about that run out.
00:11:47I've got a feeling that Ricky Ponting will never have laid eyes on Neil Broome, the fielder, before today.
00:11:56And the other thing was, look what Broome does.
00:11:59He's got such confidence he comes in and doesn't go for the two-handed pick-up.
00:12:05A one-handed pick-up and a rocket-like throw.
00:12:08That's a hell of a piece of fielding.
00:12:14That will help.
00:12:16Lovely shot from Dave Hussey.
00:12:18And that is only the third boundary of the day so far.
00:12:23That's a surprise.
00:12:23Oh, that's a lovely shot from Clark.
00:12:30His best shot today.
00:12:32Well, that one wasn't quite the right length.
00:12:34Didn't get up high enough, and Clark put it away.
00:12:36That's the last thing you need to, Cipolli, isn't it?
00:12:46When you have got a nice bat that feels good to see the face of the bat starting to crack,
00:12:50because it always starts to worry you.
00:12:52Time is nigh for it to be replaced, and if you really are playing well,
00:12:56and I think Clark's batted really well in the test matches so far this year.
00:12:59He's only played one one day up.
00:13:02I think he's in good form, so he won't want to change his bat, I don't reckon.
00:13:05There'll be a few band-aids on it to hold it together as long as he can.
00:13:15It's through as well.
00:13:17Runs just beginning to flow.
00:13:18Clark's coming back for two.
00:13:19Risky.
00:13:20Oh, that's close again.
00:13:23That was a risky second again.
00:13:26Clark's quick, but the throw skipped in low.
00:13:29It was a bounce throw, and this is touch and go.
00:13:32Oh, I'm gone again.
00:13:35It did look as though it didn't bounce really quickly off the grass, but it was quick enough.
00:13:42So two runouts.
00:13:43Australians will.
00:13:44That dressing room wouldn't be a good place to be at the moment.
00:13:47I'd be heading out to the nets if I was sitting in the dressing room right now.
00:13:52There might be a few things flying around.
00:13:55Yeah, well, Ricky's not happy when he gets 60, but he's not happy when there's two runouts.
00:13:59There it is, confirmed.
00:14:01Two runouts.
00:14:01I guess from poor judgment, just not realising how short a distance the fielder has had to throw.
00:14:08Great fielding from the Kiwis, and so should their supporters celebrate.
00:14:13Michael Clark just starting to look good, starting to look comfortable.
00:14:19Played it out into the deep.
00:14:20Beautiful pick-up, and just not that far the throw.
00:14:24Perfectly positioned throw, and off come the bails.
00:14:28You will be disappointed.
00:14:30Australia 4 for 51.
00:14:31Mike Hussey's made his way out to the middle, to bat again with his brother, as he did the other night.
00:14:42Australia in trouble.
00:14:44Two men caught at short cover, and then two runouts.
00:14:47Captain and vice-captain, both taking on the young men, or the new men, in the New Zealand side.
00:14:52It was Ricky Ponty taking on Neil Broome, then Michael Clark taking on Martin Guptill,
00:15:00and they both lost the battle.
00:15:02Now Australia need to regroup.
00:15:0432 overs to go.
00:15:06He's got two new batsmen in.
00:15:08Brings his other spinner into the attack, Jit Patel.
00:15:12Last over of Ian O'Brien.
00:15:14Went for six before the runout.
00:15:17You felt, just prior to the runout, that the two batsmen were staying to look set.
00:15:21Staying to look much better.
00:15:23So even though he's got the runout in the over, he's gone for his second spinner.
00:15:30Oh, there's a noise there.
00:15:32He's got him.
00:15:33It's down the leg side.
00:15:34It's not a great delivery, but it's an excellent catch for Brendan McCullum.
00:15:38Beautiful movement.
00:15:40Hussie doesn't look happy, Dave Hussie that is.
00:15:42There was certainly a noise.
00:15:45I don't know if that's disappointment, frustration, disappointment at what he thinks is the wrong decision,
00:15:50or just cannot believe his luck.
00:15:52But that is just, you'll see it here, that sums up the summer for the Aussies.
00:15:59Very hard to tell there.
00:16:00Maybe a bit of a deflection, but the Kiwis were confident.
00:16:03They were certain up as one.
00:16:05It's five for 54.
00:16:07Well, a disastrous start for the Australians.
00:16:10They are five for 54 in the 20th over.
00:16:13Brad Haddon is now out in the middle.
00:16:14I suppose the good news from an Australian point of view is that the two men at the middle
00:16:21at the moment made 78 and 63.
00:16:25Haddon made 63 the other day.
00:16:27Hussie made 78 in the previous match here against South Africa.
00:16:31So Australia do have two in-form players at the crease.
00:16:35Catch it!
00:16:36That's in the air.
00:16:37It's going a long way.
00:16:39He loves that area.
00:16:40Beautifully played by Brad Haddon.
00:16:44That's the area he peppers so consistently.
00:16:49A straight six.
00:16:51He hits these without any effort at all.
00:16:55I mean, never mind any hurt when Brad Haddon's in this form.
00:16:59It's quite like how he played in the test match here when he got a fabulous 96.
00:17:05No problem with that stroke.
00:17:06There's a nozzy in the crowd.
00:17:12They're really upset with himself as well for dropping it.
00:17:14Beautiful.
00:17:16So he should be.
00:17:17Made all the ground to it as Haddon did there in hitting it.
00:17:21Yes, you don't often get a chance as that one's thrown at the stumps again in an attempt
00:17:34and a run out.
00:17:35Very good backing up again.
00:17:36This is a very enthusiastic fielding side.
00:17:38Well, already on the card are the run outs that have been inflicted on the Australians by Broome
00:17:45and Guptill youngsters.
00:17:47That might have been gone too.
00:17:49There's no doubt that the energy of young players sensing an opportunity against Australia
00:17:54is quite something to watch.
00:17:56Completely different dynamic to these games.
00:17:58That's beautifully played.
00:18:07Short delivery.
00:18:08Played away into the wind.
00:18:09It'll be cut off right down on the boundary and they'll get three.
00:18:14Elliot the fieldsman.
00:18:15Just look at that appeal against David Hussey.
00:18:22I thought the bowler was slow to go up.
00:18:27Right.
00:18:28Now there's McCollum going up now.
00:18:34Ah.
00:18:34And after McCollum, so too the bowler.
00:18:39Yeah, I suppose the only thing that I was questioning there,
00:18:42so David Hussey behaving the way he did,
00:18:45if he did actually hit the ball,
00:18:47it seems a bit strange to me.
00:18:59Absolutely nothing registering there on Snicko.
00:19:05Five for 19.
00:19:07Tony Gregg just pointed out that Dave Warner today batted 18 balls for seven.
00:19:11Seven singles.
00:19:12When you think back to that 2020,
00:19:14the Melbourne cricket ground,
00:19:15when he blazed it all around the park,
00:19:17caught the nation's attention.
00:19:19Australia won the game comfortably.
00:19:21There was not even an idea that Australia might be beaten 4-1
00:19:26in the 50-over games by the South Africans
00:19:28after the two 2020 games.
00:19:30Warner would have thought
00:19:30the world was before him in an exciting way.
00:19:35Now there are team meetings galore about defeats
00:19:41and how to regalvanise things,
00:19:43and should you play this way or that way?
00:19:45Do you play your own game?
00:19:46Do you occupy the crease?
00:19:48When do we take batting power plays?
00:19:49We're five down for 90
00:19:51and a rate of three and over.
00:19:53Amazing the speed at which the whole thing's turned around.
00:19:57Yes, and some very interesting comments
00:19:58from Mickey Arthur from South Africa.
00:20:02They arrived back.
00:20:03Oh, that's beaten the field.
00:20:04Well, that's one of the first little mishaps in the field.
00:20:07O'Brien just diving over the top of that one.
00:20:12They've been stopping those, the New Zealanders.
00:20:15They've really set a high standard here,
00:20:17but I'm afraid that one got through
00:20:19fifth four of the innings.
00:20:22Well, it's unusual to see a captain
00:20:25not have a square cover on the fence,
00:20:27a point back on the fence.
00:20:30Singles have been saved in that area.
00:20:32At the moment, Vittori is...
00:20:35is in credit with the area around point.
00:20:44Aussies have got to keep going,
00:20:45and then, of course, as soon as they finish here,
00:20:47they've got to get on the plane,
00:20:47and we'll be waiting for them.
00:20:49And it should be a great series
00:20:52over there in South Africa
00:20:54with both types of players in South Africa.
00:20:59Very good.
00:21:00Two new names there on that scorecard,
00:21:02Broome and Guptill.
00:21:04Australian players wouldn't have known much
00:21:06about them before today,
00:21:07but they'll remember them.
00:21:15That's well played.
00:21:16Into the gap, nicely steered through that gap.
00:21:18In fact, and once again,
00:21:20they settled for two.
00:21:21No taking the risk on the third there.
00:21:23And what's more,
00:21:24that shot brings up the hundred for Australia.
00:21:28This partnership now worth 47.
00:21:32It's a single.
00:21:35Well stopped,
00:21:36but that's the 50 partnership of 79 balls.
00:21:38I reckon the Aussies might just wait another four,
00:21:42five, maybe even eight overs
00:21:44before they take that power play.
00:21:46The last thing they would want is
00:21:47in an attempt to try and lift the run rate
00:21:50by bringing all the field up,
00:21:51chip one to a fielder somewhere,
00:21:53and see one of these two now dismissed.
00:21:55That leaves the tail,
00:21:56even though James hopes he's the next man in,
00:21:58and he's a reasonable player,
00:21:59but it would leave them 18 or 17.4 overs to bat.
00:22:03That's a lot of overs to go yet,
00:22:05so I've got the feeling Australia
00:22:06might just wait a little bit longer
00:22:07before they take that batting power play.
00:22:12That one's through the gap.
00:22:14There's only one man that he had to beat,
00:22:17did it easy.
00:22:18Great timing with the new ball.
00:22:19It was a slower ball from Kyle Mills,
00:22:24just 109 kilometres,
00:22:25but Hussie fully aware of that change in pace
00:22:28and played through the line beautifully.
00:22:32Rolled the fingers.
00:22:34A more confident stroke from Mike Hussie,
00:22:37and he will be more confident in general.
00:22:40His first boundary after so many singles
00:22:43moves on to 30.
00:22:45He's a long way out of his crease
00:22:46when he played that.
00:22:49Haddon advances and Mills captures.
00:22:54It's a biggie.
00:22:59Well, not for the first time this summer.
00:23:01Every time Australia look like
00:23:03they're getting a partnership going
00:23:04and things are happening,
00:23:06a wicket falls.
00:23:06Haddon, after putting on 61 with Mike Hussie,
00:23:10falls at the end of the 35th over.
00:23:12Mills has got three wickets.
00:23:14Australia now six for 1-1-5.
00:23:19Yeah, James Hopes is the new man.
00:23:23Mitchell Johnson to come after him.
00:23:25Mitchell Johnson can still hit him all right.
00:23:27Talking about that batting power play
00:23:29and when Australia will take it.
00:23:30Well, that wicket's the last thing Australia needed
00:23:32from a number of different points of view.
00:23:36Mentioned, they were going well, these two.
00:23:38Haddon and Hussie, they've put on 61.
00:23:41Now Haddon's out.
00:23:42They've still got this batting power play
00:23:43to take at some stage,
00:23:44but they're running out of resources.
00:23:54Haddon bowled for 31.
00:23:55It didn't look confident, Gilly, at all.
00:23:57No, not at all.
00:24:04It looked like probably he'll be thinking
00:24:06poor decision-making.
00:24:08Hussie had just found the boundary
00:24:09finally in that over.
00:24:12Advanced down.
00:24:17Should be two there.
00:24:19Yes, Hopes coming back.
00:24:21Advancing down, I guess looking to be positive,
00:24:24but as is so much the way with the Aussies
00:24:27at the moment,
00:24:28perhaps not 100% certain about what to do.
00:24:31Went down and half-heartedly pulled out of the shot.
00:24:36And that's a good, handy outside edge.
00:24:39A moral victory to the bowler,
00:24:41but Australia will take four.
00:24:44Very good summary, Heels.
00:24:46That's a handy outside edge.
00:24:48James Hopes and the Aussies
00:24:49will take anything at the moment.
00:24:51He was done in the flight.
00:24:52It was a bit quicker.
00:24:53Skidded on.
00:24:53There's the edge
00:24:54during a test match.
00:24:56Probably out.
00:24:56Caught it slip
00:24:57in a one-day up.
00:24:58Perfect boundary.
00:25:09Straightens it up
00:25:10a little too much this time.
00:25:11Hopes is hustling for two.
00:25:14Oh, he's dropped his bat.
00:25:15It is going terribly.
00:25:18A bit of handy shielding
00:25:20of the delivery
00:25:21over the ball there
00:25:22from the field
00:25:23from the field
00:25:23or in the infield.
00:25:24I think it's Neil Broome
00:25:26as he was chasing after that
00:25:28from inside the circle.
00:25:30We may see it here.
00:25:32We're going to see James Hopes
00:25:33trying to turn
00:25:35and then that's the end
00:25:36of the thought
00:25:37of the second run.
00:25:38But just here,
00:25:38we see Broome sliding,
00:25:40protecting the ball
00:25:41from the view
00:25:42of the batsman.
00:25:43So creating some confusion.
00:25:44Confusion.
00:25:48I'll tell you,
00:25:49it could have been worse heels.
00:25:50Imagine if he'd taken off
00:25:51for the second run
00:25:52after dropping his bat.
00:25:53That costs you, what,
00:25:54a metre and a half
00:25:55at least
00:25:55when you're sliding
00:25:56and you're trying
00:25:57to beat a throw.
00:25:58After Hopes drops the bat,
00:25:59he takes a step
00:26:00and if he goes,
00:26:01he's gone for sure.
00:26:03So fortunately,
00:26:04the call of no
00:26:05followed the dropping
00:26:06of the bat.
00:26:09Brilliant bowling again
00:26:10by Patel, you're right.
00:26:11The two was on.
00:26:12He was hustling
00:26:13and he was in a position
00:26:14to take two
00:26:15and Hussey would have known
00:26:16that too.
00:26:17Hussey would have sensed
00:26:17that he could have gone
00:26:18and it needs a quick call
00:26:20by Hopes to Hussey
00:26:22to make sure
00:26:23he doesn't go either.
00:26:2460 deliveries bowled,
00:26:2622 runs scored
00:26:27by Australia.
00:26:28Who were struggling?
00:26:29Six for one, two, seven.
00:26:30I wonder what a good total
00:26:31might be in their minds
00:26:33or in the minds
00:26:34of the Kiwis
00:26:34but I'd say
00:26:35they're a little short
00:26:36of where they'd love to be.
00:26:38Hussey goes long,
00:26:39down breeze for six.
00:26:48He's been sweating
00:26:49on something like that,
00:26:50either half volley
00:26:51or drop short
00:26:52so he can rock back
00:26:54and play into his favourite
00:26:55mid-wicket area
00:26:56and Patel finally
00:26:57delivers it for him.
00:26:59He's good enough
00:26:59to pounce.
00:27:01He's 42 not out
00:27:02and the key
00:27:03for Australia.
00:27:05Ah, that is another
00:27:06brilliant take
00:27:07by Brendan McCullum.
00:27:08I've got to change
00:27:09the commentary box.
00:27:10Richie Beno's in here
00:27:11with Ian Chappell
00:27:12and Mark Nicholas.
00:27:14Don't want to go,
00:27:15do you?
00:27:15You're kind of into it.
00:27:18Yes, we'll have a look
00:27:19at this.
00:27:20Why wouldn't you be?
00:27:20He stays low,
00:27:21the gloves are low,
00:27:22they're soft
00:27:23and he's ready
00:27:23to pounce himself.
00:27:25He hasn't missed
00:27:26anything so far today.
00:27:27Great stuff.
00:27:28It's got a big job too
00:27:29with so much spin
00:27:30to keep
00:27:31even in one days.
00:27:32Well,
00:27:37not even in the frame.
00:27:45Well, that wasn't
00:27:46very clever.
00:27:46This might
00:27:50preface
00:27:52the power play.
00:27:54That's the fielding.
00:27:56Batsman
00:27:56miles out.
00:28:04Oh,
00:28:05it just
00:28:06it's going to really
00:28:08have hurt James Hopes.
00:28:11Full on the glove,
00:28:13I reckon.
00:28:14The wrist
00:28:14or somewhere around there.
00:28:16Grant Elliott
00:28:17was at mid on.
00:28:20But which hand?
00:28:23The wrong one.
00:28:25Boy,
00:28:26you could say
00:28:26the right one.
00:28:36Last turnovers
00:28:37have yielded 47
00:28:38for the loss
00:28:38of the one
00:28:39where keep Brad
00:28:40had involved
00:28:40out by Kyle Mills
00:28:41at a much better rate.
00:28:43It's the one time
00:28:43when you felt
00:28:44Australia had something
00:28:45going and that's
00:28:46mainly through
00:28:46the form of
00:28:47Michael Hussey
00:28:47who now
00:28:48can benefit
00:28:50from a field change
00:28:51because the
00:28:51batting power play
00:28:52has been called.
00:28:53We will have
00:28:53five overs.
00:28:57Overs
00:28:5743 through 47
00:28:59during which time
00:29:01only three fielders
00:29:02can be outside
00:29:03outside the 30-meter ring.
00:29:04Well, I think
00:29:07the Australians
00:29:08have given
00:29:08the New Zealanders
00:29:09a bit of a clue
00:29:10where they should put
00:29:11certainly one man
00:29:13out in the deep
00:29:14because I'm sure
00:29:15they've taken
00:29:16the power play
00:29:17starting at this end
00:29:19so they'll have
00:29:20three overs
00:29:20hitting downwind
00:29:21or with
00:29:22Hussey on strike
00:29:23he's hitting downwind
00:29:24to the onside
00:29:25which is where
00:29:26he likes to go.
00:29:27His favoured spot
00:29:31is down there
00:29:32towards the gap
00:29:34where all the
00:29:35equipment is
00:29:37the curator's
00:29:38equipment there
00:29:39that's his favoured spot
00:29:42and in fact
00:29:44Jeetan Patel
00:29:44is just being moved
00:29:45a little closer
00:29:46to that spot
00:29:47right now.
00:29:53Still
00:29:53only three fielders
00:29:54on the leg side.
00:29:58Hussey is out.
00:30:00My goodness me
00:30:02that's as bad
00:30:03a start
00:30:03to the power play
00:30:04as you could
00:30:04conceivably have.
00:30:06The man in
00:30:06chipping it
00:30:08for such a comfortable
00:30:09catch to mid off.
00:30:10Hussey will be furious.
00:30:16Well
00:30:16the fieldsman
00:30:17also back
00:30:18on the circle.
00:30:22Hussey
00:30:22is absolutely
00:30:23furious with himself.
00:30:25That was
00:30:25neither one thing
00:30:26nor the other
00:30:27shot that.
00:30:32In the meantime
00:30:33Mitchell Johnson
00:30:34makes his way
00:30:34to the middle
00:30:35with a heck
00:30:36of a job to do
00:30:36because there's
00:30:37still seven overs
00:30:38to bat
00:30:38out of the 50.
00:30:40Well this
00:30:41New Zealand side
00:30:42have had a habit
00:30:44in the last few years
00:30:45in different forms
00:30:46of the game
00:30:47as well.
00:30:47I'm thinking
00:30:48of a couple
00:30:49of test matches
00:30:49against England
00:30:50certainly some
00:30:51one day games
00:30:52they have
00:30:53had a habit
00:30:54of snatching
00:30:55defeat from the
00:30:56jaws of victory
00:30:57and Australia
00:30:57are going to
00:30:58want to hope
00:30:59that they're in
00:31:00that same
00:31:00sort of mood
00:31:01again
00:31:01because
00:31:02at the moment
00:31:03New Zealand
00:31:04have got a
00:31:04wonderful opportunity
00:31:05to go one up
00:31:06in this series.
00:31:11Oh now
00:31:12that has to be
00:31:13another wicket.
00:31:14It is another wicket.
00:31:17Extraordinary stroke
00:31:18a nothing stroke
00:31:20from James Hopes
00:31:21chaos in the
00:31:23Australian ranks
00:31:24and a cockahoo
00:31:26team of Kiwis
00:31:27out there
00:31:27who are playing
00:31:28darn well.
00:31:29Ricky Ponting
00:31:35sitting back
00:31:35there thinking
00:31:36gee I'm glad
00:31:37I took this
00:31:38batting power play
00:31:38made an absolute
00:31:41nonsense of it
00:31:42and two
00:31:43dolly catches
00:31:44in the infield
00:31:47and the two
00:31:48batsmen who were
00:31:49set are now
00:31:49back in the
00:31:50pavilion
00:31:51and probably
00:31:52having to face
00:31:53their captain.
00:31:55Well it's
00:31:56Hopes' right hand
00:31:57the injured hand
00:31:58that came off
00:31:59the bat there
00:31:59just wondering
00:32:00about how
00:32:01he's going to
00:32:02be when he
00:32:03has to bowl
00:32:04right hand
00:32:05comes off
00:32:05perhaps he
00:32:06wasn't able
00:32:06to grip
00:32:06the bat
00:32:07firmly enough
00:32:07might be
00:32:08more trouble
00:32:09for Australia
00:32:10153 now
00:32:12Nathan Bracken
00:32:20will come
00:32:22to the crease
00:32:23to join
00:32:23Mitchell Johnson
00:32:24Johnson's face
00:32:25just the one
00:32:25ball
00:32:26really is a
00:32:28chaotic
00:32:28innings
00:32:29at this
00:32:29stage
00:32:30key men
00:32:33gone
00:32:33carelessly
00:32:34in the early
00:32:35stages
00:32:35of the innings
00:32:36and now
00:32:37there's a big
00:32:37shout
00:32:38that must be
00:32:39isn't that
00:32:39LBW
00:32:40it's not
00:32:40LBW
00:32:41well as he
00:32:44hit it
00:32:45what
00:32:47Brown
00:32:50seemed to
00:32:50stifle the
00:32:51appeal
00:32:51Nathan Bracken
00:32:54I think he
00:32:55was pretty
00:32:55nervous about
00:32:56it
00:32:57height
00:32:58would be
00:32:59the thing
00:32:59as it
00:33:00often is
00:33:01here in
00:33:01Perth
00:33:02but he
00:33:02was pretty
00:33:02nervous
00:33:03about it
00:33:03he
00:33:03was trying
00:33:05to do
00:33:05as much
00:33:06as he
00:33:06could
00:33:06to
00:33:07get away
00:33:08from
00:33:08those
00:33:08stumps
00:33:09that's
00:33:14really

00:33:15Steve
00:33:15Buckner
00:33:16doesn't

00:33:16normally
00:33:17he gives
00:33:18you a nod
00:33:18but that
00:33:19was that
00:33:19plumb
00:33:19he just
00:33:19put his
00:33:20fingers
00:33:20straight up
00:33:21and said
00:33:21away you
00:33:22go
00:33:22yes it
00:33:23looked

00:33:25you're
00:33:25dead
00:33:25right

00:33:52and Steve
00:33:53Buckner
00:33:54that as
00:33:54you say
00:33:55Mark
00:33:55Taylor
00:33:55is the
00:33:55quickest
00:33:56Buckner
00:33:56decision
00:33:57I've ever
00:33:57seen
00:33:57hits him
00:34:00in line
00:34:00with about
00:34:01middle
00:34:01Hawkeye
00:34:03says
00:34:03well
00:34:04going on
00:34:05to maybe
00:34:05miss leg
00:34:06certainly
00:34:07looked
00:34:07a lot
00:34:08worse than
00:34:09that
00:34:09there's a
00:34:09bit of
00:34:09angle
00:34:10there
00:34:10was a
00:34:12bit of
00:34:12swing
00:34:12maybe a
00:34:13bit of
00:34:13reverse
00:34:13swing
00:34:13Steve
00:34:16Buckner
00:34:16wasted
00:34:17no time
00:34:17give him
00:34:17Bracken
00:34:18out
00:34:18Australia
00:34:189 for
00:34:19154
00:34:20all sorts
00:34:21of trouble
00:34:21they've now
00:34:22lost 3 for
00:34:222 in this
00:34:24batting power
00:34:24play
00:34:24yes they don't
00:34:26look happy
00:34:27chappies do
00:34:27they
00:34:27there's no
00:34:28doubt about
00:34:29that
00:34:29Ricky
00:34:29Ponting
00:34:30run out
00:34:30earlier today
00:34:31as was his
00:34:31vice-captain
00:34:32Michael Clark
00:34:33Sean Tate
00:34:34is the new
00:34:34batsman
00:34:35he's going to
00:34:36have to do
00:34:36his stuff
00:34:36with the
00:34:37ball
00:34:37you can't
00:34:37blame the
00:34:38bowlers
00:34:38for this
00:34:38the batsmen
00:34:40have let
00:34:40the team
00:34:41down here
00:34:41right from
00:34:42the word
00:34:42go
00:34:42yeah but
00:34:44no time
00:34:45for that
00:34:45sort of
00:34:45thinking
00:34:45Greggy
00:34:46they've
00:34:46got to
00:34:46hang
00:34:46around
00:34:47here
00:34:47Tate
00:34:48he's
00:34:48got to
00:34:48hang
00:34:48around
00:34:49and see
00:34:50if
00:34:50Mitchell
00:34:50Johnson
00:34:51can get
00:34:51some
00:34:51big balls
00:34:53away
00:34:53but
00:34:54no one's
00:34:55been able
00:34:56to play
00:34:56big shots
00:34:56it's been
00:34:57extremely
00:34:58impressive
00:34:58by the
00:34:59Kiwis
00:34:59Mike Hussey
00:34:59the highest
00:35:00scorer
00:35:01at 49
00:35:01that's
00:35:04where he
00:35:05goes
00:35:05unorthodox
00:35:07very
00:35:08effective
00:35:08he's
00:35:10very strong
00:35:11he certainly
00:35:11did get
00:35:12stuck into
00:35:12that
00:35:13lovely
00:35:14shot
00:35:14good ball
00:35:16too
00:35:16you know
00:35:17Brian
00:35:17hasn't been
00:35:18hit down
00:35:19the ground
00:35:19when he's
00:35:19delivered this
00:35:20slower ball
00:35:21short of a
00:35:22length
00:35:22that shouldn't
00:35:23come back
00:35:23at me
00:35:23Mitchell
00:35:24Johnson
00:35:25just clears
00:35:25that front
00:35:26leg
00:35:26and flat
00:35:27bats it
00:35:28the other
00:35:30thing about
00:35:30it is
00:35:31he doesn't
00:35:31try and
00:35:31whack it
00:35:32way over
00:35:32the top
00:35:32he plays
00:35:33it down
00:35:34along the
00:35:34ground
00:35:34that was
00:35:36the surprising
00:35:37thing to me
00:35:37with the
00:35:37wicket of
00:35:38Mike Hussey
00:35:39and then
00:35:39James Hopes
00:35:40it was
00:35:40as if
00:35:41Australia
00:35:41took the
00:35:42batting
00:35:42power play
00:35:42and there
00:35:42was some
00:35:43law
00:35:43thrown
00:35:44into the
00:35:44batting
00:35:44power play
00:35:45that you
00:35:45have to
00:35:45hit the
00:35:45ball
00:35:46in the
00:35:46air
00:35:46Tate
00:35:50goes down
00:35:50the ground
00:35:50does it
00:35:51well
00:35:52and
00:35:54picks up
00:35:55the boundary
00:35:55well the crowd
00:35:58love this sort of
00:35:59stuff don't they
00:35:59when the number
00:36:0111 decides to
00:36:02take him on
00:36:03over the top
00:36:05mind you
00:36:07his partner's
00:36:08having a little
00:36:09talk to him
00:36:10it's gutsy
00:36:13it's gutsy
00:36:14because it could have
00:36:15looked ugly
00:36:15if it didn't
00:36:16come off
00:36:17but
00:36:17that's the way
00:36:18to think
00:36:19see the ball
00:36:19hit the ball
00:36:21oh good shot
00:36:27really good
00:36:28shot
00:36:29with power
00:36:30once again
00:36:32nice and
00:36:33straight
00:36:33from
00:36:34Mitchell
00:36:34Johnson
00:36:34yeah you
00:36:35picked that
00:36:36early on
00:36:36that was
00:36:36the place
00:36:37to go
00:36:37and he's
00:36:38obviously
00:36:38decided
00:36:39that if
00:36:39he gets
00:36:40anything
00:36:40up there
00:36:41he's going
00:36:41to smash
00:36:41it down
00:36:42the ground
00:36:42beautiful
00:36:43shot
00:36:43this
00:36:43very strong
00:36:44he is
00:36:45have a look
00:36:45at the way
00:36:46he plays
00:36:46forces it
00:36:47down the
00:36:47ground
00:36:48that's right
00:36:49New Zealand
00:36:49hoping he'd
00:36:50play to
00:36:51the covers
00:36:51but he
00:36:54comes up
00:36:55with an
00:36:55ounce
00:36:55that's
00:36:56a lot
00:36:56better
00:36:56that'll do
00:37:01Sean Tate
00:37:02that'll do
00:37:03attempted hook
00:37:04top edge
00:37:05four
00:37:05nine from
00:37:07the over
00:37:07good one
00:37:07from Australia
00:37:08well this is
00:37:11exactly what
00:37:11you need
00:37:12this is
00:37:12frustrating
00:37:13now for
00:37:13New Zealand
00:37:13the last
00:37:15two in
00:37:15Johnson
00:37:15with Tate
00:37:16and Tate
00:37:17of course
00:37:17the vulnerable
00:37:18one
00:37:18have a look
00:37:19at this
00:37:20you know
00:37:22Brian got
00:37:22bored
00:37:23bowling wasn't
00:37:24that patient
00:37:25in that
00:37:25particular
00:37:26over
00:37:26Mitchell
00:37:26Johnson
00:37:27came up
00:37:27with a
00:37:28drive down
00:37:29the ground
00:37:29when he
00:37:29over pitched
00:37:30and now
00:37:31he's under
00:37:32pitched
00:37:32too short
00:37:33to Sean
00:37:34Tate
00:37:34when there's
00:37:35probably no
00:37:35need for it
00:37:37Australia
00:37:38get lucky
00:37:38one of the
00:37:39rare wins
00:37:40for the
00:37:41Australians
00:37:41in this
00:37:41innings
00:37:42the last
00:37:43couple
00:37:43of overs

00:37:47lovely
00:37:47shot
00:37:48with
00:37:48power
00:37:49look at
00:37:50the
00:37:50control
00:37:50in this
00:37:51shot
00:37:51Mills
00:37:54gets it
00:37:54nice
00:37:55and full
00:37:55probably
00:37:56too full
00:37:56Johnson
00:37:57just punches
00:37:58it straight
00:37:59back from
00:37:59where it
00:37:59came
00:38:00oh boy
00:38:01the Western

00:48:09he's been

00:48:13outside leg
00:48:15probably
00:48:15in swinging
00:48:17down leg
00:48:17at the
00:48:18least
00:48:19well he was a bit
00:48:22nervous he got the leg out of the way
00:48:23quickly I guess to be fair to him
00:48:26first ball
00:48:26you get hit on the pad
00:48:28and there's a big shout
00:48:29you're always going to be a bit twitchy
00:48:30but he got that leg out of there in a hurry
00:48:33certainly gets it a long way across ball pitching outside leg
00:48:39oh it's
00:48:45scoops back almost to the right hand of johnson
00:48:48fulton checks the bottom of his bat is that what hit the ball did it hit the ground
00:48:57up to the battle was it just pad
00:48:59change of pace once again very nearly worked for mitchell johnson only just short
00:49:09that one's in the air and it's grabbed mitchell johnson stops his follow through and grabs a lefty
00:49:19well they've been changing pace a lot
00:49:25i must say that the new zealand batsman
00:49:27have been hitting a lot of balls
00:49:29in the air in front of the wicket
00:49:31obviously one of the reasons
00:49:32why ponting's employed
00:49:34a number of fieldsmen in that position
00:49:36excellent grab there from mitchell johnson
00:49:39he really is a fine athlete
00:49:41it's three for 25
00:49:42and now grant elliott comes in to replace
00:49:48peter fulton who spent 35 balls getting seven
00:49:51he doesn't look too happy in that shot does he
00:49:53tell you what we've just seen a fantastic catch
00:49:59to do this in your follow through heading to the right side of your screen
00:50:03and to throw yourself back to your left side against all the momentum
00:50:06all the natural movement of the body that's a fabulous catch
00:50:11and a man catching mid off
00:50:15a man at about third slip for hopes
00:50:18that's better
00:50:21ross taylor takes the bit between the teeth
00:50:25has a lovely cover drive
00:50:27huge sigh of relief through the new zealand rooms there
00:50:35much more confident looking stroke
00:50:38just that extra bit of length from hopes
00:50:41get the hands through the ball
00:50:43certainly be breathing a little bit easier ross taylor
00:50:51that's a good shot
00:50:55that'll take some stopping
00:50:57in fact they'll only be stopped by the boundary
00:51:00just a bit of width
00:51:01by mitchell johnson on that occasion and put away
00:51:05just too much width there
00:51:14it's full in length but it was the freedom
00:51:17that taylor had to get his hands wide and through the ball
00:51:22we've just had drinks a moment ago
00:51:28and wait to see paul blocker wilson out in the middle
00:51:31probably the fourth umper i suppose in this match
00:51:33played one test match for australia
00:51:35a number of one days
00:51:37terrific blake
00:51:38now umpiring first class cricket
00:51:41in australia
00:51:42that's nicely turned away by taylor
00:51:44that'll be four
00:51:45nice deflection
00:51:47he's just had some very positive intent here ross taylor
00:51:53even those two deliveries at the start of this over
00:51:55where he let the ball go through to hadden
00:51:56just his body movement was positive
00:51:59and they're just busy using the pace
00:52:02not trying to do anything spectacular with it
00:52:06just allowing that tickle around the corner but
00:52:08the intent is there no doubt about it
00:52:12goes over the top
00:52:15will it carry the third man johnson
00:52:17well he got there
00:52:19but in the end it went through his hands
00:52:21that could be a pivotal moment in the game
00:52:25that's why cricket's such a ridiculous game at times
00:52:30he's taken one of the greatest catches you'll ever see of his own bowling
00:52:33now he's got in and made ground to this one
00:52:36and simply couldn't hang on to it
00:52:39that'll bring up the 50 for new zealand in the 18th over
00:52:48good deflection from elliott
00:52:51there's your comparisons australia were 454
00:53:03after 19 overs earlier today
00:53:05zealand three for 55
00:53:07two men catching now it's a shortish mid wicket
00:53:13sean tate
00:53:14well that's four
00:53:17i think it'll be leg buys
00:53:19just not quite getting the line right at the moment sean tate
00:53:25he's looking to target the stumps
00:53:27if he gets it wrong
00:53:28races away to the boundary
00:53:30oh no another one's gone
00:53:35those short fielders are working this evening
00:53:39just a little chip to michael hussey
00:53:45grand elliott has to go
00:53:48yeah good bowling i think by hopes
00:53:51must have been a slower ball
00:53:52again a soft dismissal
00:53:55just a little cutter there
00:53:56and look at it a real lollipop catch
00:53:58and michael hussey's not going to drop those
00:54:01eight for elliott
00:54:06it's four for 64
00:54:08now neil broom is
00:54:14the new batsman
00:54:15gifted young cricketer
00:54:17played just two one day internationals
00:54:20prior to this one
00:54:21made his debut against the west indies
00:54:23and he will have
00:54:26a pumping heart
00:54:28can you imagine
00:54:29coming in at the wacker
00:54:30a full house
00:54:31australia gunning for him
00:54:33swarming all over them now
00:54:35suddenly beginning to believe in themselves again
00:54:36they've got to bowl
00:54:43and feel brilliantly
00:54:44they've got to be looking for wickets all the time
00:54:47direct hit
00:54:48brad haddon thinks he's
00:54:51he's got a victim
00:54:52but i'm not so convinced
00:54:54that was neil broom's off the mark stroke against australia
00:54:58it's one of the most dramatic moments he might ever be involved in
00:55:02well he's uh he's uh he's gone past by quite a long way
00:55:09brad adding gets very overexcited
00:55:13in fact broom was i reckon certainly made it because he quickly looked up saw that the ricochet off the stumps
00:55:23might have given him another run but ross taylor wasn't aware of that
00:55:26brooms okay he has a couple to get going back live little catch up to the man this time
00:55:38he likes width and the aussies haven't given him that in about the last five eight overs
00:55:48particularly since that last wicket
00:55:50taylor's in trouble oh it's a direct hit
00:55:56hussie loves it so does clark hatton's in the pile as well ross taylor stands and waits
00:56:08well watching live i like it as well oh i think not i think he's just got back there
00:56:16the outstretched arm
00:56:19he's made good ground i think we'll see he's safe
00:56:22by a whisker but safe that's a tight huddle the aussies are in at the moment it's going to have
00:56:30to break up very soon ross taylor looked towards the dressing room soon after to get the okay from
00:56:38his men the australians are all looking at this screen they're not going to be happy they thought
00:56:43they had new zealand's best player five for 79 would have looked a lot better than the four for it stays
00:56:50well everyone's patting one another out there but it wasn't all that good
00:57:01and the slips almost needed to stop a four because third man have no chance
00:57:11yeah sean tate definitely looking for that yorker something sliding in and lbw perhaps he
00:57:16got the length right a beautiful york of it broom was just able to just get the bat down in time
00:57:27unfortunately for the australians the flying michael hussey who had just walked into that position
00:57:32couldn't get there
00:57:41talking to mickey arthur after after that match on friday night they've got a tough selection ahead
00:57:46they've got actual prince the vice captain he's ready and fit and able
00:57:52and that's beautifully leg glanced puts fine leg under pressure too much pressure
00:58:03and that's the risk by searching for the yorkers for the bulge the lbs
00:58:09just straying a fraction and it races away at the wacker
00:58:14the reconditioned ball offered by the umpires and the players don't have any choice these days it's
00:58:26after 34 overs the ball is changed reconditioned ball much whiter
00:58:33generally a little bit harder too i reckon james hopes will bowl with it
00:58:37that one probably doesn't look quite as white as the one we saw earlier today when
00:58:48they had a ball change in the australian innings the one that was
00:58:52used in the ball chains look much whiter than the one that was taken away from the new zealanders that one
00:58:57not quite as good
00:59:13there's umpire bruce oxenford i think that shake of the head suggests that he
00:59:18doesn't think there's a great change between the old ball and the new one either
00:59:21that's the wicked australia needed just a couple of quiet overs james hopes
00:59:31all the beauty last over put the pressure on the batsman and now michael clark's got the wicket
00:59:36australia right back in the game just a little quicker quite clever from clark flatter and it really
00:59:43skids off the surface well well broom gone for 29 it's five for 106
01:00:02well we've got a bit of controversy here new zealand now five for 106. neil broom's the last man out
01:00:16just watch this replay where is brad haddon's gloves missed it there hadn't's definitely got
01:00:21his gloves in front of the stumps now whether the balls hit the stumps or whether the gloves i'm not
01:00:26really sure but i don't think this should be out i don't think the balls hit the stumps i really don't
01:00:31think this boldly i think that's gone into the gloves and it's the gloves that have broken that
01:00:37left-hand veil as you look the off stump veil broken by the gloves well i think it's irrelevant anyhow
01:00:43because once the gloves are in front of the stumps it's definitely not out so whether it's hit the
01:00:48stump or not doesn't matter he's uh he's taken the ball in front of the stumps can't be out so can
01:00:55can the third umpire intervene i mean this is a complete one off everybody assumes that's out bold
01:01:02not least the umpire at this end steve buckner if the third umpire sees that can he intervene and say
01:01:09hang on that wasn't bold well at the moment he can't not anymore he can't because we're the game's
01:01:14gone way ahead but i mean but i reckon i think the ball may have hit the stumps but there's no doubt
01:01:20that hadden's gloves have hit the bales or stumps as well and i'm with chapelli i don't think he should
01:01:24be up but i reckon this ball has hit the bail or the top of the stump but there's no doubt there's
01:01:31gloves in there as well
01:01:41well i think uh certainly i'm not sure that i ever did read it but i knew the law that if the gloves are
01:01:48in front of the stumps it can't be out so that should be automatic not out it's interesting looking
01:01:55at the batsman's response there too he wasn't sure either because normally when you bowl you just walk
01:01:59straight off but he actually hesitates momentarily
01:02:06car mills is the new man that's a big breakthrough and potentially a big moment in this game five for 108
01:02:12david hussey's back into the attack full toss got what it deserved hammered away
01:02:23well that's the right way to handle a low full toss just with a slightly horizontal bat
01:02:29very difficult to hit those shots with a with a straight bat ross taylor has given it the old evo
01:02:36to the onside perfect way to deal with it
01:02:49push down the ground for a single james hopes take it out of the attack after bowling such a good
01:02:56oh that surprises me a bit with the new batsman in
01:03:02nice little deflection ross taylor tate's got some work to do he can't get there lovely shot
01:03:09just using the pace of michael clark and a fraction of width that's a good way to play
01:03:15the wacker it's much harder to work singles with this little bit of extra bounce and the skid the ball
01:03:22really comes onto the bat if you use the pace of it like that you're a good chance of a boundary
01:03:2840 now to taylor new zealand have asked for the batting power play 53 or 48
01:03:34who's your money on heels oh don't tell me that don't ask me that at this stage gregi you've got no
01:03:39idea field placings being set by ricky pointing here first of all interestingly we've seen brad hadn't
01:03:46come straight up to the stumps but donning the helmet but we've got long on and long off in position
01:03:57and the third man out on the right of screen there right out in the deep a deep forward square leg
01:04:06so a bit of protection straight as you can see there
01:04:13and the deep square leg so he's going to have to
01:04:19be reasonably straight i would have thought bracken and certainly can't afford any width on that offside
01:04:25or a little one on leg stump too that a batsman can work past brad hadn't or get inside maybe
01:04:31get the wide and four boys more danger danger happens under pressure well they don't have to
01:04:36be silly here new zealand they can get ones as well don't forget they don't have to get fours
01:04:42oh they're going for them and that's that edge and it'll go to the boundary for four it's amazing
01:04:46what these batting power plays do all of a sudden they think they've got to smash fours
01:04:55well it's fantastic to try it because that's what mills is in for they've got plenty in the shed
01:05:00but nathan bracken i'd imagine wasn't trying to give that much width
01:05:04and the outside edge is better than something out of the middle especially from around the
01:05:08wicket you pitch it way outside off stump there you're giving the batsman a really good look at it
01:05:13right here we go again ball two four off ball one
01:05:19oh great shot great shot through the covers for four
01:05:23boy that did bisect the fieldsman well he had a bit of length and width to work with the ball before
01:05:31but kyle mills here has simply got inside the line from bracken it was full in pitch and has just
01:05:40eased it beautifully through the offside and immediately this leads to a rethink from the aussies
01:05:45that's the first boundary of the over a bit wide a bit short but this one right at the stumps stays
01:05:51leg side of it and allows him to freeze hands through the offside now that was off middle stump
01:05:57probably nathan bracken is in great discussion with ricky ponding now he wants someone out there now
01:06:02but kyle mills i bet could hit that same ball onto the leg side he's practicing the shot now he can
01:06:08ball hit something from middle stump over the leg where there's no protection now
01:06:12there's no one outside the ring on the right of screen yes and he's bowling from around the wicket
01:06:18it sort of lends itself to flick on the onside there's the little flick all the way along the
01:06:25ground just a single this is turning out to be a tremendous over
01:06:32oh he's hit that one hard that's a big six that's a magnificent hit
01:06:37well he's got underneath that and he's lofted it over the deep mid-wicket boundary
01:06:42that's 50 to ross taylor very very well played power play or not that is a maximum that has gone
01:06:50well up the grass embankment there and brings up a great 50 for ross taylor off 83 balls
01:06:58and these power plays you just can't predict what's going to happen
01:07:02the australians couldn't get up the scoring when they had their batting power plays but
01:07:06just got that length to get underneath it
01:07:13oh good shot again into the gap and that'll go for four
01:07:16all the way along the ground 11 runs off the over
01:07:21new zealand are finishing well five for 152
01:07:30oh that's well fielded very feel well fielded by clark and very well backed up too by bracken
01:07:35a little bit of a niggle in the back there for clark so 25 or 31
01:07:43so at the moment with five wickets down you'd have to say that uh new zealand were favorites or
01:07:54favorites to win this what australia need to do is they need to get a wicket or two they need to
01:07:58get taylor and mills out get two new batsmen in and surely they won't make it look this easy 51 from 57
01:08:07cole mills has been a wonderful inclusion to the batting lineup
01:08:13will tar smash through the gap for four well that got what it deserved that was a full delivery outside
01:08:20off stop have a look at the new zealand camp they really are very happy
01:08:26well um five runs off two deliveries 19 to get off 28
01:08:36oh he's down he's gonna run he still wants to run but uh and now
01:08:41he's gonna take a little bit of a walk some deep breaths there no run scored though
01:08:57late change of plan by sean tate sees mills going to the leg side follows him risky because if he
01:09:04misses him it's a wide mills hasn't got a clue he knows his partner will be looking for a run he
01:09:10doesn't feel like running but just trying to do his best
01:09:18that's the one they needed they need wickets australia it's not over yet that's kyle mills
01:09:25clean bold by tate for 26 a very useful 26 as well very effective indeed but just has he panicked a
01:09:33little bit he's just opened the door for australia tate he got it where he needed to get it full
01:09:40right just about on the crease hits middle stump the captain's happy all the aussies are happy
01:09:47not so kyle mills a great contribution 26 at six for 168
01:09:55well new zealand are now six down for 168 and they've got a new batsman at the crease and
01:10:01he handles pressure pretty well too it's the new zealand captain daniel vittori
01:10:06he's come out to face the music and there will be some quite loud music out there i can tell you
01:10:12as well because they'll be after him
01:10:13into the block hole again and they're going to take a single this time there's a shy down the far end
01:10:23the aussies are backing up all over the place oh and there's an idiot on the ground
01:10:27well it went right into the air he ran right into the area the ball was heading as well
01:10:41well
01:10:44new zealand uh got themselves a single i think that always going to get that single i don't think the
01:10:49idiot uh really upset play in so much that's the dismissal again right up in the block hole out and
01:11:02it's a good delivery too wasn't it i think definitely the pace of tate is just pushing mills
01:11:08further and further off the wicket there uh to hopes or bracken had the ability to get inside and hold his
01:11:15line a little bit but ricky pointing very happy there all the aussies coming in they're still alive
01:11:22there is a frenzy on every single
01:11:25right so taylor on strike on 64 he's the one who could win it for them
01:11:30will he take a chance and go over the top fieldsman in trying to save one here
01:11:37oh and that's hit him he's taken a phase of action so uh he'll get himself a leg by he was trying
01:11:44to get out of the way so three runs in a wicket that's well bowled six for 170
01:11:53oh he's got him what a catch what a magnificent catch
01:11:58well now that does make a difference beautifully taken at backward point michael clark going there
01:12:05fall to his left and a very good innings by ross taylor comes to an end well they've needed
01:12:12something or someone to lift them inspire them tonight australia that may well be it they're not
01:12:19home yet but certainly bracken getting it in the right areas bowling to the field well supported
01:12:24by michael clark ross taylor 64 off 97 7 for 170
01:12:34salvi is the new batsman he's capable of hitting big sixes we know that
01:12:40can he do it under the sort of pressure that he's under now he hasn't played much
01:12:44uh one di one one day international cricket 12 or 15
01:12:52ross taylor did well to hit that ball so hard to michael clark was fired in following his footwork
01:12:58he walked across the stumps last over we saw take follow kyle mills the ball before he got out
01:13:03that time taylor walked across the stumps bracken followed him as well and he sliced at the clark
01:13:09everything came off for the australians just that little bit of cut there from bracken getting the
01:13:16ball out of the middle of the bat oh boy he enjoyed that too didn't he he knows exactly how much
01:13:22australia needed that week at 12 to get off 15 deliveries taylor out three men up in the circle on the offside
01:13:30oh and uh that was pretty close pointing there's a miss field now there's not going to be a run out
01:13:40oh no he's got him in he's got in he's got in not out well he's going to refer it just to make sure
01:13:48that was a real comedy of errors but i think he got home at the end of the day
01:13:54he's still on his watches tim south at the other end's got no idea is the bat on the ground he's
01:14:00put it on the spine and there's nothing grounded over the white line it's just what new zealand don't
01:14:06want but it's a typical of this match well now that that bat that fieldsman's in the way there so we
01:14:13can't see that angle this angle's the one does he is the bails not off yet the bail off there i don't
01:14:19think so not quite yeah right there it's definitely off now this is this is a very very close call
01:14:27very close call look at ponting looking at the bat now then is the bail has got to be totally off both
01:14:33ends of the bale have got to be off well my call is benefit of the doubt to the batsman let's see or is
01:14:41it off is it off totally it's off both ends of the bale have to be dislodged that's it doesn't have to be
01:14:47totally up in the air whoa that dislodges quick yes that tells the story you're right that's out
01:14:53oh not out well they were due something their way tonight weren't they with the bat the kiwis
01:14:58and had a couple go against them and perhaps lucky to get away with that one
01:15:02yes it's that last replay actually that showed the bales coming or really both ends of them being dislodged
01:15:09anyhow in the air and wide of the fieldsman they'll get two well there's a very good chance of a run out
01:15:18here i can tell you it feels like south he's about 10 not out already the tory's been in of his any out
01:15:26of his crease back into it the run out has been given not out southies up and back and then mistimed that
01:15:33one for two and they still need 10 from 13. the shy at the stumps that would have been close most
01:15:42likely be out the fumble never run on the misfield they try to send back
01:15:53slow ball and there's a fumble there oh that's a bad fumble
01:15:56three runs and a wicket off that over
01:16:03bracken on his way in
01:16:06that's a great delivery a magnificent delivery
01:16:10pitch just outside leg stump and it's hit middle and leg and that now makes it eight down
01:16:17four runs to get or four deliveries
01:16:19we've seen a couple of instances of sporting courage have a look at that a floated slower ball
01:16:25he drew the shot from southey
01:16:29nathan bracken's picked up ross taylor now tim southey beautiful bowling
01:16:38southey's still got his eyes closed eight for 178
01:16:42jitan patel has uh already arrived at the center
01:16:51and uh he's got to face the music now
01:16:59oh bracken he's the go-to man for punting in tight situations he just got it right gutsy bowling as
01:17:06you say heels fired up the aussies southey knows perhaps a bit of an experience coming in there
01:17:14trying to end it in one fell swoop didn't pay off now do you try to read their minds daniel vittori
01:17:21spoken to jitan patel follow that up what do you expect he's probably going to try and do
01:17:30my expectations are he'll drop and run he'll look for a single and get vittori on strike so ricky
01:17:35ponding does he read into that and get his fielders in well they're talking about it that's for sure
01:17:40and i agree with you i think they've got to run no matter what no matter what they've got to run run
01:17:46to the keeper i would
01:17:50australia do need a couple of fields and we're seeing it now we've got pointing in at a shortish cover
01:17:55we've got cameron white right of screen there in at a shortish mid wicket they've got to get in and try
01:17:59and cut off that easy single and then take the bowl of stumps
01:18:06well they're running here goes the throw wide of the stumps no one there no one over the stumps
01:18:14and so they get the single they wanted three of three to win the game
01:18:20it would have been a hell of a catch by cameron white that throw by michael clark he let loose
01:18:27and white's on the right of screen he's got to now get to the bowlers and he tries as hard as he can
01:18:31Clark lets it go and he bails out
01:18:38it's fielding drill fielding practice drills there but right the pace with which michael clark
01:18:44threw that obviously looking for the glory throw which often he produces for australia but
01:18:50it stays at three off three a runner ball
01:18:56all right so what's ponti going to do here he's bringing mid on up now then
01:19:01on strike is the new zealand captain daniel vittori
01:19:09he's uh got bracken bowling over the wicket to him will he try and flick one away fine on the
01:19:14leg side well would australia take a tie after posting just 181
01:19:19no no no they wouldn't they they want to win there we go
01:19:24well that's well played straight out to uh mid-wicket they'll get one right two runs needed
01:19:30off two balls there's never been a tie between these two sides in one day international cricket
01:19:35so that's it all the twos two wickets in hand two runs to win new zealand and two balls remaining
01:19:51they did outlaw the underarm didn't they
01:19:57oh i'm surprised that you even thinking along those lines
01:20:00i don't think we'll need it i think nathan bracken has been tremendous in this over
01:20:07he's been fantastic all night three for 33 for bracken from 9.4 the aussies have had a little bit
01:20:14of trouble executing exactly what they wanted be it yorkers be it the right line and length of their
01:20:19bumpers but bracken in this little over here this little spell fantastic he needs a dot
01:20:26patel needs a little edge past the keeper o'brien needs a rest they've just got to get one here to
01:20:36secure the point and then the last ball they can win the match here we go
01:20:43they're going they've got through right so new zealand now can't lose but they can win if they get one
01:20:50off the last ball right so that's a sensible cricket just opening the face of the bat there
01:20:59and the non-striker was out of the traps in a flash now what does the week keeper do here does he stay
01:21:06back does he come up i think he has to stand as close as he can for comfort he's got to be close
01:21:14enough so the the run option by the play and miss if they play and miss and they want to try and run
01:21:20and sneak it by he's got to be close enough to be quick enough someone should be at the bowler's
01:21:25stumps the bowler should get out of the way in case hadn't has got to throw to the non-striker's end
01:21:31i've seen jeetan patel he's got the the runner come out he's taken off his helmet he's taken off
01:21:37now his other glove is sitting out there
01:21:41throwing his arm guard was it and his helmet streamline he's getting his life as possible
01:21:46to run as fast as he can look i think hadn't's doing the right thing coming out here because
01:21:50now you've got one side covered at least one stumps there's someone over one stump so all you've got to
01:21:56do is get the ball to him for the run out because they're gonna they're gonna be heading off no matter
01:22:01what here they're gonna get close everyone's got to get pretty close yeah but uh bracken's gonna bowl
01:22:09this one up and dead straight and they're gonna run no matter what look at them all this is like the
01:22:13toy test oh they've got it away for four away for four slightly over pitched it was perhaps two inches
01:22:23over pitch made it into a full toss and vittori has flayed it through the offside for four
01:22:30and have a look at the celebration there in the new zealand rooms ricky pointing will be so
01:22:37frustrated with this so yeah yet so far well it's his favorite scoring area dan vittori front foot back
01:22:45foot through that backwood point area and he just allowed himself a bit of room sliced through backward
01:22:51of point for four and a very pleased new zealand skipper and so he should be a good performance
01:22:56particularly with the ball in the field a few little shutters with the bat but a cool head from
01:23:02the skipper gets the kiwis home cool head all day 10 overs for 22 runs daniel vittori
01:23:09and then he's at the crease 10 from nine balls right when they needed it he just got a full toss
01:23:17bracken was three inches from the yorker that would be impossible to squirt like that
01:23:22the tory very aware and very onto it one nil that's what it means that's what it means to the kiwis
01:23:34first game of the commonwealth bank series the chapel hadley series new zealand go one nil up
01:23:40well i think we've got a really good series on our hands here especially now that they've won this first
01:23:43one so there it is that's the uh summary of the game the australians winning the toss batting first
01:23:52and getting 181 they were in all sorts of trouble early on some good batting uh late in the innings
01:23:58181 and new zealand then eight for 185 they win by two wickets off the very last ball this has been
01:24:08quite a show by new zealand they managed to nearly throw this game away they've come back they've saved
01:24:12it it sets us up nicely for the rest of the series but before that we've got the ab medal that's on
01:24:17tuesday night that'll be from crown we got all sorts of people down there all the big names of
01:24:21creed will be part of that evening and of course there'll be a new hall of famer there'll be a new
01:24:26allen board of medalists so we're looking forward to the crown palladium on tuesday night and then
01:24:31still in melbourne on friday night the second of these matches in the commonwealth bank chapel
01:24:35handley series australia and new zealand that's a day-nighter down at melbourne new zealand have got
01:24:40off to a fine start the rest of us well we're sweating and our hearts are pumping because
01:24:45it was here a nail-biter good night
