00:00Hello
00:02Hi
00:04Hello
00:06Hi
00:08Hello
00:10Hi
00:12Hi
00:14Hi
00:16Hi
00:18Hi
00:20Hi
00:22Hi
00:24Hi
00:26Hi
00:28The sixth ball.
00:43Nekif connects and the ball flies deep in the outfield.
00:47They complete a second run.
00:48The scores are level.
00:49The third run will win the match.
00:52Grouch makes a great effort, but the bails go off and he's run out.
00:56I should think it was probably the most fabulous match in which I've ever played.
01:00The scores are tied.
01:01One wicket left.
01:03Paul Bowling, the seventh ball to climb.
01:10Nekif is run out and the match has finished in a tie.
01:14The first in test history and a fitting end to one of the greatest test matches of all.
01:21The most fabulous test, the Australian captain, Richie Beno.
01:24The first test of the series, Australia versus the West Indies, Brisbane, 1960, the fabulous tie.
01:30Captains Richie Beno and Frank Worrell go out to toss on a warm morning in December,
01:34and on this ground two years before, England scored 19 runs before lunch on the first day.
01:39This is an entirely different story.
01:42Play starts with Davidson open the bowling to Hunt, and the first scoring stroke is a four through mid-off.
01:47This is the only film of this famous match, and like an art treasure, it has become priceless as the years roll by.
01:54Davidson to Kanhai, and again his first scoring stroke is a four.
01:57Two West Indian batsmen, two first course scoring stroke, and now Sobers are four,
02:01so three players have come in and each scored a four.
02:04Yet for all this, in the first hour of play, Davidson takes three wickets,
02:07and the West Indies are three for 65 after one hour of play.
02:11And looking back now, Alan Davidson, 14 years later, must give you a thrill to see that start again.
02:15It's a fabulous test, Norman, no matter which way you look at it.
02:18Right from the first ball, as you say, the first ball was a four,
02:22and so as each batsman came in, their approach to cricket was the right approach to cricket.
02:27It was meant that the ball was there to be hit, and they hit it.
02:30Well, you had played in that test two years before against the English team.
02:34I don't suppose you could believe it when you saw the scoreboard after an hour.
02:36You had three wickets against your name, and yet you'd been hit all over the ground.
02:38I think I had something like three for 39.
02:40They were my figures, I think, from about the first hour.
02:43And normally you would say, well, that's halfway through the afternoon.
02:46You've bowled your, you know, say, 12 overs or something like that,
02:49and you've got your three for 39.
02:51But to see it in the first hour and then to see 130 before lunch,
02:56well, it's just something that I think this was the series of all series, though, really.
03:01Alan, without going too far ahead in the story, just briefly,
03:03we're going to see now a partnership between two players,
03:05and one of them is Garfields and Auburn Sabres.
03:07Now, just tell you what you think of this innings we're going to see.
03:10Well, that, I think, was technically the best innings,
03:12or not technically, but certainly the best innings I've ever seen in a test match,
03:16because he just didn't beat the fieldsman.
03:18He bisected the fieldsman.
03:20It's the...
03:21...drive, takes the score past the 100,
03:26and even Benno has to applaud the brilliance of Garfields Sobers.
03:30Worrells scores a single off the first ball of Mackay's over,
03:33and Sobers steals the limelight again.
03:35And so...
03:49Sobers and Worrell have started their partnership, which yielded almost 200 runs.
04:13Worrell, playing the role of the lesser light in the combination,
04:16is making a valuable contribution towards a big score for the West Indies.
04:20They've recovered from the loss of three early wickets
04:23and are still maintaining the crowd-pleasing rate of more than one run a minute
04:26and nearly six runs and over.
04:41Sobers passed 50 in 57 minutes, and his innings at this stage included eight forwards.
04:46This is a timely return to form after his recent string of failures against New South Wales and Queensland.
04:56With lunch approaching, Benno bowls and Worrell follows the pattern of his left-handed partner.
05:02At lunch, the West Indies have lost three wickets for 130,
05:05with Sobers not out 68 and Worrell not out 16.
05:08Worrell's classical style blends in perfect harmony with the power-stroking of Garfield Sobers,
05:18and this partnership has been rated by experts as equal to any scene in Australia in a test match.
05:24Whether it's speed or spin, there's nothing Australia can produce to restrain these brilliant batsmen,
05:28and in this over, it's left-handed Alan Davidson who comes in for some cavalier treatment.
05:32Sobers and Worrell maintain the fast rate of scoring against a consistent and varied attack.
05:58They race to a century partnership in 90 minutes with Sobers, the dominating figure.
06:03These fellows have no respect for reputations,
06:06and Benno has given village green treatment in this over to Sobers.
06:09A new name appears on the scoreboard,
06:36and Lindsay Kline bowls his first over of the match,
06:39and although Sobers and Worrell continue to notch up runs,
06:43Kline is to prove the least expensive of all the Australian bowlers.
06:46Sobers, 99.
06:51Sobers, 100.
06:52A century which was rated by ABC commentator Johnny Moyes
06:56as one of the best he has been in 50 years of cricket.
06:59Kline, the bowler now, to feel the might of this 24-year-old batsman
07:02who has just scored his 10th hundred in chess cricket.
07:05The Australian fieldsmen are relieved when the partnership comes to an end.
07:33Sobers spoons up an easy catch-off, a full toss from Mickett,
07:37and he's out for 132.
07:40This great inning lasted only three hours, and it included 21 balls.
07:45The partnership between Sobers and Worrell realized 174 runs,
07:49only five short of the record partnership set by Sobers and Wolcott in 1955.
07:55Five minutes later, Worrell is out,
07:57caught Grouch, bowled Davidson for 65,
07:58and the West Indians were 7 for 3.59 at stumps on the first day.
08:07Another four to Hall, 17 runs off the over.
08:11High pitch of excitement as Hall needs one more for his 50.
08:20Wesley Hall, 50 runs in 65 minutes,
08:23and they're loving every minute.
08:24Hall, deceived by flight, stretches into the unknown.
08:28Grouch whips off the veils and Hall is stumped, 4.50.
08:35Hall received a tremendous ovation for a remarkable half-century
08:38which included eight balls.
08:40His partnership with Alexander yielded 86 runs,
08:44scored in only 69 minutes.
08:46Now Klein bowls to the number 11 batsman, Valentine.
08:48The leg by is only the fourth sundry of the inning.
08:56Alexander faces the next ball from Klein.
08:59He attempts to hit the ball out of the ground
09:01and watches as Davidson takes the catch.
09:03The innings is over, with Alexander the last batsman out for a highly creditable 60.
09:12The West Indies totaled 453,
09:14with Sobers, Worrell, Solomon, Hall, and Alexander all scoring 50 or more.
09:19There's an atmosphere of tension as Wesley Hall comes bounding in.
09:23A full toss right at McDonald's head,
09:26a fiery opening by the giant bowler.
09:29This is real test match heat,
09:30with Hall bowling at express speed from the start.
09:33Here comes another thunderbolt,
09:35and McDonald almost gets an edge.
09:40A really vicious ball.
09:42Straight at the batsman,
09:43and McDonald collapses in pain.
09:48McDonald was struck just under the heart
09:50by a ball which reared up from a little short of a length.
09:53McDonald, a tough fellow,
09:54is soon ready to face Hall again.
09:59Then Sobers strikes a great blow for the West Indies.
10:03McDonald plays an uppish leg glance,
10:05and Hunt takes a brilliant catch at leg split.
10:13McDonald is out,
10:14caught Hunt bowled Sobers for 57.
10:16Here's the run for 100 up for Australia.
10:21The runs were scored in the reasonable time of 132 minutes,
10:25and at this stage,
10:25Simpson is 36 and Harvey 6.
10:2815 minutes later,
10:30Valentine is brought into the bowling,
10:32and this delivery bowled Harvey for 15.
10:35Simpson was out,
10:36bowled Ramadan for 92 in the final minutes,
10:39and it's O'Neill and Pabble
10:40who come out to open the batting
10:41at the start of the third day.
10:46Valentine has given another spell,
10:48and Pabble in his eagerness to score
10:50loses his wicket off the next ball by Valentine.
11:02It's a close run-out decision,
11:04and Pabble waits for the umpire
11:06to confirm his dismissal.
11:08It was touch and go,
11:09and Pabble was a little unlucky
11:11to be run out after a fine innings of 45.
11:13With Ramadan bowling,
11:16O'Neill starts to attack.
11:18This burst of scoring
11:19is the best Australian batting of the inning.
11:30Valentine bowls,
11:31and O'Neill with a straight drive
11:33brings up his first century
11:34in a test match in Australia.
11:36They take a quick second run,
11:48and Australia is nine for 500.
11:53O'Neill attempts a lofted drive,
11:56the ball soars high in the air,
11:57and Valentine, waiting at mid-off,
11:59takes the catch.
12:00During the day,
12:04the Australians scored 309 runs
12:06for the loss of seven wickets.
12:08The outstanding batsman
12:09was Norman O'Neill,
12:10and his total of 181
12:12was his best in a test match.
12:14His innings,
12:15which lasted 400 minutes,
12:17included 22 fours.
12:19An extraordinary part about this,
12:21that after the first innings,
12:22958 runs had been scored,
12:24Alan Davidson.
12:25Normally, that would mean
12:26no result in the game.
12:27Well, that would be an aggregate
12:29for any normal test match, Norman.
12:31And I think the big thing
12:32out of this was the fact
12:33that both sides
12:34got on with the job.
12:35Time is the important factor
12:37in winning test matches,
12:38and if you score your runs quickly,
12:40and in this case,
12:41well, we had big scores,
12:43but yet they were scored
12:43at a remarkable rate.
12:45I think when you look
12:46at that last bit of film,
12:47too, you're seeing probably
12:48one of the greatest batsmen
12:50I saw in my lifetime,
12:51and that was a fellow
12:51called Norman O'Neill.
12:53And, you know,
12:54a lot of young people
12:55would never have seen Norman bat,
12:56but Norman was a tremendous player,
12:58a tremendous striper of the ball,
13:00and his ability to play shots
13:01to all parts of the ground.
13:02I think, you know,
13:03you saw him play a sweep,
13:04you saw him play a pull shot,
13:06on drives, off drives,
13:08back foot drives.
13:10There wasn't a shot
13:10that he didn't have,
13:11and when he was going,
13:12well, there was just
13:12no holding him.
13:13And that, in fact,
13:14was his highest score,
13:15I think, in test cricket,
13:15wasn't it?
13:16It would be, I think, Norman.
13:17But even as a bowler,
13:18Alan, if you've got batsmen
13:20playing shots against you like that,
13:21do you prefer that
13:22rather than pinning a batsman?
13:23I prefer it all the time.
13:24Actually, it's one of those things
13:25that if a batsman is playing shots,
13:27he's actually taking risks
13:28in many cases.
13:29One thing that that stays,
13:30did you feel that you could get
13:31a result in the game,
13:32if you can call a tie a result?
13:34It's a finish, isn't it?
13:34You've got a finish.
13:35Well, this was the thing.
13:36There was only two days
13:37virtually to go then
13:38after this great performance.
13:40But even then,
13:41I think that whenever,
13:43while the game is going,
13:44you always feel,
13:45I think this is one of the great things
13:46about an Australian team,
13:47that while there is time,
13:50there is always hope
13:50that you will get a decision.
13:51And we always played
13:53in that particular period
13:55of our careers.
13:56We were playing
13:57to win every game.
13:59And so basically,
14:00even though there were
14:00only two days to go,
14:01we were still looking for a win.
14:03Well, here it is.
14:03Let's continue the story.
14:05And this is the start
14:06of the early part
14:07of the West Indies
14:07second innings.
14:08And once again,
14:08it's Alan Davidson
14:09who scores an important breakthrough.
14:11He bowls here to Sobers.
14:12A fast-winging Yorker
14:18and Sobers' clean bowl.
14:23Sobers made 14 runs
14:25and the West Indians
14:26had lost three for 114.
14:28Worrell comes in
14:29and Beno bowls to Can High
14:31who needs three runs
14:32for his lifting.
14:33Can High scored
14:43his half-century
14:44in the smart time
14:45of 90 minutes.
14:50A few minutes
14:51after the adjournment,
14:52Alan Davidson
14:53captures the wicket
14:54of Can High
14:54who's caught behind
14:55by wicket-keeper
14:56Wally Grout.
14:57Grout has now figured
14:58in six dismissals
14:59and Davidson
15:00has now captured
15:01his eighth wicket
15:02for the match.
15:04Solomon comes in
15:05and Lindsay Klein
15:06moves in to bowl
15:07to Frank Worrell.
15:09A heavy responsibility
15:10rests on the shoulders
15:11of these two players
15:12because only Lashley
15:13and Alexander
15:14have any claims
15:15to batsmanship.
15:18Solomon is content
15:19to keep his wicket intact
15:21and leave the run-getting
15:22to his more experienced partner.
15:24And Worrell does just that.
15:26He's batting quite well now
15:27in that graceful,
15:28fluent manner
15:28which has always been
15:29a feature of his play.
15:33The vital partnership
15:34is brought to an end
15:35by Alan Davidson.
15:37The brilliant left-arm bowler
15:38takes his fourth wicket
15:39when Frank Worrell
15:40snicks a catch to Grout.
15:46Worrell is out for 65,
15:48the same as his score
15:49in the first innings.
15:50A grand performance
15:51by the veteran
15:51West Indian captain.
15:53Worrell and Solomon
15:54added 83 runs
15:55and the score
15:56is 5 for 210.
16:00Alan Davidson
16:01follows up his great effort
16:02with another wicket.
16:03Lashley clean bowled
16:05without scoring
16:05and the West Indians
16:07face the very real prospect
16:08of outright defeat.
16:10The fifth and last day
16:11of the test match.
16:12There are rain clouds
16:13in the sky
16:14but the weather cleared
16:15shortly afterwards.
16:16The players are on the field
16:17for the start
16:18of one of the most eventful days
16:19in the history
16:20of Australian cricket.
16:22Play begins
16:22with Davidson bowling
16:23to Valentine.
16:24Paul and Valentine
16:34have added 24 runs
16:36but more important still
16:37they've used up
16:38half an hour
16:39of valuable playing time.
16:43After some minor incident
16:44the innings comes to an end
16:46in Davidson's own.
16:53Paul
16:54clean bowled
16:55and the West Indians
16:56are all out
16:57for 284.
16:59Well Alan Davidson
16:59will be very happy
17:00to see that.
17:00What's 6 for 87?
17:02Yes Norman
17:02and I must admit
17:04that a couple of things
17:05came off in that
17:05second innings.
17:07The Yorker
17:07that bowled Sabres
17:08the Yorker
17:10that bowled
17:10Hawke at the finish.
17:11A couple of things
17:12that you try
17:13they do come off
17:13and when they do
17:15of course
17:16it puts your side
17:17in a position
17:17where you can win
17:18and of course
17:18you're always looking
17:19for that
17:19and I must admit
17:21that they did
17:22hold us up
17:22for that half hour
17:23on the last day.
17:24We thought
17:24we were in a very good
17:25position actually
17:25before Stump's
17:27on that second last day.
17:28Well let's continue
17:29the story
17:29a sensational start
17:30again to the Australian
17:31second innings
17:32233 to win
17:33wickets tumble
17:34straight away
17:34and here's another
17:35wicket falling.
17:36Neil Harvey snicks
17:37and Sabres
17:38takes a brilliant catch.
17:43Sabres dislocated
17:44his finger
17:45taking the ball
17:45and Alexander
17:46a veterinary surgeon
17:48by profession
17:48applies first aid.
17:53Les Favill
17:54attempts to hit
17:55his way out of trouble
17:56with his team
17:57on the verge
17:57of utter collapse.
17:59The ball reaches
17:59the fence
18:00and it's certain
18:01that Hall
18:01will be stung
18:02by the boundary.
18:03The crowd anticipates
18:04a super fast delivery
18:05with Hall running
18:06into bowl.
18:11And he's out
18:12caught by Solomon
18:13in the leg fast
18:14and Australia faces
18:15outright defeat
18:16with five wickets down
18:17and 186 runs
18:19still required to win.
18:21Hall has the splendid
18:21figures of four for 37
18:23and both Mackay
18:24and Davidson
18:25have just arrived
18:26at the wickets.
18:27Worrell is the bowler
18:28and the batsmen
18:29attempt to start
18:29an Australian recovery
18:30in a tense period
18:32of cricket.
18:33the score
18:44climbs slowly
18:45through the 70s
18:46and on into the 80s
18:47and every run
18:48is conceded grudgingly.
18:50Finally,
18:51Hall is taken off
18:51and Garfield Sobers
18:53comes on
18:53in his place.
18:55Mackay and Davidson
18:56have weathered
18:56the violent spell
18:57and runs come more
18:58quickly against
18:59the medium paces.
19:05The bowler
19:06at the grandstand end
19:07is little
19:08Sonny Ramadhan.
19:09Mackay
19:10Beaton
19:10is clean bowled
19:11and Australia
19:12with six wickets down
19:13is still
19:14141 runs behind.
19:16Mackay scored
19:1728 runs
19:18and Australia
19:19has 92
19:19on the board.
19:20Richie Benno
19:24survives an appeal
19:25for court behind
19:26of Ramadhan's
19:26first ball.
19:28The Australians
19:28have reached the end
19:29of their batting line-up
19:30and the result of the match
19:31hinges on the performance
19:32of the two players
19:33at the wickets.
19:34Davidson and Benno
19:35rise to the occasion
19:36and this is the start
19:37of a great partnership.
19:49Davidson and Benno
19:51put on a century partnership
19:52and the game is building up
19:54to a dramatic climax
19:55as Hall bowls
19:56with the new ball
19:57at 20 minutes to six.
20:0617 runs to win.
20:15It's a real grandstand finish
20:17and Richie Benno
20:18is getting anxious
20:19with 15 minutes left.
20:21It's going to be
20:22a photo finish result
20:23with the whole round
20:24in a state of feverish
20:25excitement.
20:27Davidson attacks
20:28and away they go
20:29for another run
20:30and they require
20:3116 to win.
20:36Yes, ten to make
20:57and the match to win.
20:59A breathless hush
20:59as they bow
21:00a tremendous cheer
21:01as they score.
21:03Nine runs to get
21:04ten minutes to go.
21:06A push to leg
21:07a suicidal run
21:08they scare for home
21:10eight to win.
21:12Sobers the bowler
21:12Benno plays the ball
21:13to mid wickets
21:14they start down the pitch
21:15and Davidson is run out
21:17by a missing
21:17magnificent return
21:18from Solomon.
21:21Davidson run out
21:22for 80.
21:23What a grand cricketer
21:24he is.
21:2540 odd runs
21:26in the first innings
21:27and 11 wickets
21:28in the match.
21:30Well, Alan Davidson
21:31and I believe
21:32that is the only occasion
21:33in test history
21:34that one player
21:34took ten wickets
21:36and scored more
21:36than 100 runs
21:37in a match.
21:37That's right, Norman.
21:38Well, what were your
21:39feelings right at the
21:40moment you were run out?
21:41Well, just the same
21:42as I were then
21:42I could cry.
21:44Really, Norman,
21:45I think that's probably
21:46you know,
21:47when I think back on it
21:48I think that's the
21:49best innings I've ever
21:50played
21:50because of the wicket
21:52you know, as I say
21:53it was a normal
21:54fifth day wicket
21:54but it wasn't easy
21:56but I don't think
21:57I hit a ball
21:57off the middle of the bat
21:58in the whole innings
21:59and I can still
22:01think of going back
22:02when Slasher
22:03I joined Slasher
22:04at five for 57
22:05and he gave me
22:06the normal story
22:08no run outs
22:09as I got to the wicket
22:10then at six for 90
22:12when Richie came in
22:13that very first ball
22:14that people saw
22:15I still don't know
22:17to this day
22:18how it missed bowling him
22:18it went between
22:19his bat and pad
22:20and I thought
22:21it must have bowled him
22:22and fortunately it didn't
22:23but it was
22:24it was
22:25a feeling
22:26of sadness
22:27really
22:28I was nearly in tears
22:29I can assure you
22:30but Alan
22:30in retrospect
22:31if you had not
22:32have been run out
22:32the finish wouldn't
22:34have been there
22:34well this is right
22:35I think probably
22:36this was the greatest
22:37thing that happened
22:38for cricket
22:38not just here in
22:40Australia
22:41but for the West Indies
22:42and for all other
22:43competing countries
22:44in test cricket
22:45well that finishes
22:46at the moment
22:46as part of your story
22:47now to continue the story
22:48we're going to go to
22:49the man
22:49who had the
22:50who felt most of the
22:52atmosphere for Australia
22:53and he's the last man
22:54then Lindsay Klein
22:54as we watch Beno
22:56and Davidson batting
22:57Lindsay Klein was sitting
22:58in the dressing room
22:58and he speaks of the story
22:59of the atmosphere
23:00of this tremendous match
23:01building up to the climax
23:02most of us are superstitious
23:04in most sports
23:06and Slasher more so
23:07than any of the other
23:08players in that team
23:09and Davo and Beno
23:12started to get on top
23:14and we started to develop
23:16that partnership
23:17and Slasher had us
23:18sitting in our chairs
23:19and wouldn't allow us
23:20to change chairs
23:21if we needed to go
23:23to the toilet
23:23or change our gear
23:25or do something like that
23:26we had to do it
23:26in between overs
23:27and be back
23:28before the ball
23:29was started
23:29before they bowled
23:30the ball
23:31the next over
23:31so it was very
23:32very very tense
23:33in the dressing room
23:35with Slasher
23:36causing this
23:36everyone to sit tight
23:38on the particular chairs
23:40now on now
23:43to the last over
23:44for the match
23:44and this is Hall
23:45bowling to Grout
23:45now the first ball here
23:46they take a run here
23:48Beno's very anxious
23:49to get the strike
23:49and they race through
23:50for a single
23:50and Australia
23:51only wants four runs
23:52to win
23:53with seven balls
23:54to go
23:54now Hall
23:55coming in
23:55for the second ball
23:56radio commentary here
23:57Clive Harburg
23:57and Johnny Moritz
23:58and he's out
24:00caught the edge
24:01and he's caught
24:02behind by Alexander
24:03precious money
24:07eight wickets
24:08for 228
24:10well what a test match
24:11moves in
24:15bells to make it
24:16forward to it
24:20drives it
24:21Hall now to make it
24:24moves in
24:25on his leg stump
24:27tries to sweep it
24:28and here's a stolen single
24:30and he might be running out
24:31at home
24:31Hall to Grout
24:38and Grout
24:42skies him
24:43three of them
24:44four of them
24:45getting under it
24:46Kanhai
24:46gets it
24:47and it's blocked
24:47it's blocked
24:49Hall and Kanhai
24:50ran in for it
24:51four of them
24:52converged on the ball
24:53shirt trailing behind him
24:55goes to Mekhoff
24:56Mekhoff pulls him
24:59high into the outfield
25:00four runs
25:02no it won't get to the fence
25:04they're going for the three though
25:06Grout
25:06slides his bet behind the line
25:08he's flying fast
25:09and he's out
25:10run out
25:10run out
25:11run out
25:12two runs only
25:17the Strader still requiring
25:19one run to win
25:20Lindsay Clyde
25:24the last man
25:25and here's the single
25:27that wins the match
25:28the Strader
25:28he's out
25:29he's out
25:30run out
25:31the Strader's found out
25:33one last thing
25:35the thing that made it
25:37such a fabulous match
25:38what was it
25:38well I think the fact that
25:40when we went back after tea
25:42we still won it
25:43I think 128
25:44in about 120 minutes
25:46and as we walked out
25:48Richie and myself
25:48never said a word
25:49as a matter of fact
25:50we were pretty silent
25:51but when we got out there
25:53he just turned
25:54he says
25:54well let's give it a go
25:55and I said okay
25:56and I believe that
25:58that was what made the series
25:59a lot has been said
26:01about how the West Indies
26:02made the series
26:03but I believe that
26:05in that last
26:05two hours
26:06it would have been
26:07so easy for us
26:08to have just played
26:08for a draw
26:09and yet
26:10with six wickets down
26:11Richie said
26:12let's give it a go
26:13and I believe
26:14that was the thing
26:15that made it
26:15and I can't praise
26:17Richie enough
26:17so those are the comments
26:19of Alan Davidson
26:20I'm sure you must have
26:21enjoyed that
26:21fabulous and unique
26:23is the right word for it
26:25that cricket film
26:25Australia vs the West Indies
26:27the fabulous tie
26:28a great sports classic
26:29this has been a Fox Sports
