00:05The number 10 best team that didn't win the Super Bowl, the 1983 Washington Redskins.
00:13The dominance of that football team, the high-scoring team in football,
00:17in goes the diesel for a touchdown,
00:19certainly doesn't get mentioned as much as it should when you talk about great football teams.
00:24Touchdown, Washington Redskins!
00:26They were a really fun team to watch.
00:30Here comes the fun bunch in the end zone.
00:33But greatness was robbed from them.
00:35They lost by four touchdowns in the only game that matters.
00:40Our number 10 team finished 14-2, rolling through defenses for a then-record fight.
00:48They had a record 24 rushing touchdowns.
00:51Dodgman, one EVP.
00:53They had countless Hall of Famers.
00:58They had one of the top defenses, including the top offense.
01:05They were defending champions.
01:09The 83 Redskins were a team that had that feeling of a dynasty.
01:12They had won the Super Bowl the year before.
01:14The Washington Redskins have an NFL championship.
01:17As far as talent goes, I think it was, you know, the best team I've been a part of.
01:22All right, let's do the work now!
01:24You just had so much talent on that squad.
01:26Don't forget about all the great hogs.
01:28Run it now! Run it now! Run it now! Run it now!
01:31Joe Theisman was at his peak.
01:32Touchdown, Washington Redskins!
01:34Now, baby! New Mexico!
01:37John Riggins closing his career down, but he was still a bruising rusher.
01:40Touchdown, John Riggins!
01:42Take up that visa!
01:44Arm! Arm! Arm!
01:49But the most impressive record set that season was a plus 43 turnover differential.
01:55People get all excited, ooh, but ooh, that's nothing.
01:59They're winning games in a way that was almost like cheating.
02:02Picked up! He's gone! It's 28, Darryl Green!
02:05When you're plus 43, you are two turnovers better from the word go than your opponents.
02:12Three turnovers better a game.
02:15PLEASE!
02:17If there's anything better than this, I hope it happens in two weeks.
02:19You just don't know, in a one-game situation, anything can happen.
02:23But the two game...
02:25The two games they lost were by one point each.
02:29They were this close to being 16-0.
02:37Welcome to Super Bowl...
02:39...team.
02:40A monument...
02:41...no mistake before halftime cost...
02:43Washington a place in history and landed them at number 10 on our list.
02:48If you could say a Super Bowl was decided by one play, that might be the Super Bowl you'd point
02:54at.
02:55Here comes Lewinsky, with 12 seconds to go in the half.
02:57Trailing, 14 to 3.
02:59Rocket screen.
03:00Weisman looks off to the left.
03:02Intercepted!
03:03Touchdown Raiders!
03:04Touchdown Raiders!
03:05I don't believe it!
03:07Joe Gibbs says he could describe the path from being a genius to being an idiot in two words.
03:13Rocket screen.
03:14They look like they do it in coming.
03:16That was the single most back-breaking play in modern franchise history.
03:22I cannot believe the Redskins would do that.
03:25Everything that could go wrong for the Redskins...
03:28...the Redskins went wrong.
03:30Everything that went well for the Raiders, I don't think they could have planned.
03:33It just happened.
03:34He has to reverse his field, but he...
03:35...he comes away for a moment.
03:37He's passed to win at the present.
03:38Oh!
03:39A rebound!
03:40That was one of the most stunning losses in the fashion in which it happened.
03:44An utter and complete blowout.
03:45The Raiders dominating this Washington Redskins team.
03:49That pretty well tells the story what kind of day it's been.
03:52Before that, they had demolished the Eric Dickerson Rams 51-7...
03:57...and handed Joe Montana his first playoff loss.
04:02But none of that matters if they didn't win the Super Bowl.
04:06For Joe Typhoon.
04:08If we had won that Super Bowl, they'd consider us the greatest team in the history of football.
04:12I don't want to hear about them being one of the greatest teams of all time.
04:15They lost 38-9 in the Super Bowl.
04:18End of discussion.
04:19The number nine best team!
04:24I think they're disrespecting the Redskins.
04:27And I hate the Redskins.
04:29I hate the Redskins, the football team, the commanders, whatever they call themselves.
04:34So, if I think they're not giving them enough credit, they're flat out of disrespecting them on this list.
04:43Super Bowl, the 1979 Houston Oilers.
04:47That was a team that's probably underappreciated because they didn't win the Super Bowl.
04:51It's as simple as that.
04:53Who couldn't love those Oilers?
04:54You know, Pastor Rini's their quarterback.
04:56Pastor Rini laid it right where it should be.
04:58The coach wears a cowboy hat.
04:59And they got this big, mean bowling ball of a running back in Earl Campbell.
05:03Giving the ball to their main man, number 34, Earl Campbell.
05:06They don't need to be on this list.
05:08They had a great running back.
05:10And a coach that liked to chew, dip, and wear a cowboy hat.
05:15That's about where it ends.
05:19Yeah, he's right.
05:21They don't need to be on this list.
05:23In 1979, plaid pants and feathered hats were all the rage.
05:28But in Houston, it was the Love Ya Blue Oilers that had fans in a frenzy.
05:35Oilers of that era were a fun, entertaining team to watch.
05:39Fifteen, ten, five.
05:41Touchdown, Earl Campbell.
05:42I know their defense was one of the best in the NFL.
05:45Troubling sacks way back in the 30-yard line.
05:48This place has erupted.
05:50You had Bum Phillips standing on the sidelines looking like a refugee from the Grand Ole Opry.
05:58You wanted to see Bum Phillips coach on the game's grandest stage.
06:03You can't do that.
06:04Oh, come on, hell, fire.
06:06I'm going to give you a chance.
06:09Don't even watch that s***.
06:10And we were denied that.
06:12Bum Phillips, best hat to never get into the Super Bowl.
06:17Perhaps the best buzz cut to never get into the Super Bowl.
06:21That ain't funny.
06:22That ain't funny.
06:24That was probably the best chance that that Bum Phillips team ever had to win a world championship.
06:30Munch Munch was a gutsy and resourceful group that nearly fought its way into a Super Bowl.
06:37The Oilers are rising to the occasion today.
06:40They were able to go to San Diego and overcome Eric Correale when they were 22-point underdogs.
06:46They will be in the AFC championship game again.
06:49I said before the game, we were short on manpower, but we were long on guts, and I'm damn sure
06:54right.
06:57The feeling going into that AFC championship game was Pittsburgh-Houston, whichever team wins this game, is going to win
07:04the Super Bowl.
07:05It was a tough call that may have prevented our number nine team from taking down the tougher Steelers.
07:14The Houston version of it is, if the play had been called correctly and Renfro had been given the touchdown,
07:20that the Oilers would have won the game.
07:22I don't know if they would have won the game, but that play was called terribly.
07:27Down inside, we felt like we were robbed.
07:29That's a little simplistic.
07:31The Oilers fumbled four times.
07:33Fumbled!
07:34Pittsburgh ball at the Houston 49!
07:37And Earl Campbell had 15 yards rushing on 17 attempts.
07:41Frustrating day for Earl Campbell.
07:43He just can't get himself at full speed.
07:48That Oilers team was a really good team for a long time.
07:51They just had the misfortune of being really good at a time when the Steelers were maybe the best team
07:56ever.
07:56The Pittsburgh Steelers are the champions of the National Football League for the fourth time.
08:01Their history kind of gets pushed aside a little bit unfairly because the franchise moved to Tennessee.
08:07It was a great team.
08:08They ran into a great Steelers team.
08:10They gave them a good run in 79, but that's about it.
08:13They don't need to be on this list.
08:15The number eight best team that didn't win the Super Bowl.
08:17The 1984 Miami Dolphins.
08:20I'm glad they lost.
08:21I'm glad they didn't get there.
08:23They beat me too many damn times.
08:25There was a buzz around the 1984 Dolphins that this was the new team for the 80s.
08:30The hot young quarterback who was going to redefine the position.
08:34Here's Marino.
08:35Wide open field.
08:36Oh!
08:37It's four touchdowns and there's a record.
08:39Ridiculous numbers.
08:4048 touchdowns.
08:41Marino's unstoppable.
08:42They don't want to run the football.
08:43They want to throw it downfield.
08:44We love that offense.
08:46If it wasn't for a guy like Dan Marino throwing it for 18 trillion yards, this team would be in
08:50the Canadian Football League.
08:54Does anybody play for Miami other than number 13?
08:57Dan Marino had numbers 83 and 85, Mark Clayton and Mark Duper, and led the Dolphins to a 14-2
09:05mark.
09:06Here they go.
09:07Duper scored.
09:09We was on fire.
09:10I think the DBs spent a lot of time, no sleep before the game when they come to play the
09:14Miami Dolphins with the Morris brothers there.
09:16But this is a team that routinely won games 44-7, 31-7.
09:21This is a team that coasted through the AFC playoffs.
09:23There's a beat pattern.
09:24It is Jeff.
09:25What?
09:26What's now?
09:26Yeah, this team is ranked a little bit too low.
09:29Jamie.
09:33All the Dolphins were one of the great offenses ever, but I don't think you would remember them as one
09:38of the great teams of all time.
09:41Looking back on it, you really wonder how effective the Dolphins would have been had they had a great running
09:47back as a compliment.
09:47They don't go for the pass.
09:49They try to run it, and they did not make it in.
09:52Prior to the 1984 season, former Dolphin first-round running back David Overstreet passed away.
09:58David Overstreet was a good all-around back, powerful runner, and he had great speed, quickness, agility.
10:05Overstreet around the left side, gets the corner, goes in, goes in, ball to touch back.
10:10That guy would have had a great career in the National Football League.
10:15Dolphins are number one!
10:17We got defense!
10:19The Dolphins had the killer Bs, but they were starting to lose their sting.
10:23Defensively, they were average, to be kind.
10:26And even in the two playoff games that they had, David Craig and Mark Malone were the two quarterbacks.
10:31And they almost passed for 600 yards between them.
10:34Perfectly blown by Dave Craig.
10:36If they were having trouble with David Craig and Mark Malone, you could only imagine what was going to happen
10:40with Joe Montana and the 49ers.
10:42Mark Malone was the worst full-time starting quarterback of that era.
10:48And he was probably the worst quarterback to ever play in an AFC Championship game.
10:55Kind of did.
10:56In Super Bowl XIX, the 49ers exploited our number eight team's flaws.
11:01Everybody went into that game talking with Dan Romano and the 49ers.
11:05We're like, hey, what about our team?
11:07Back to past Montana fires.
11:08It's cut there by Craig.
11:10Goes in for a touchdown!
11:11It was Roger Craig who really killed us that day, and we had no answer for him.
11:14It was simply a game where we were overmatched.
11:17A handoff, give it to Craig.
11:18Craig batters his way to the goal line.
11:20Touchdown!
11:20Aimed to see an offense, and the wrong one showed up!
11:23Dan Romano, who never got sacked, spent half that game on his back.
11:27He was looking for where the next hit was coming every time he took a snap.
11:31Dolphins have been less than super this afternoon.
11:33The 49ers have been very super.
11:34It's a heck of a football team, but they just lost to one of the better teams ever.
11:41Eight is probably about the right number.
11:43The 49ers were clearly a better football team that year.
11:46Whoever's voting on that list of top ten should have their heads examined.
11:50Number eight.
11:51We should be number one, because we did have a great offense, and we did have a great team.
11:56We should have won that Super Bowl that year.
11:58We just didn't do it.
11:59I'd love to have that notch on my belt, but it didn't happen, and we have to live with that.
12:05The number seven best team that didn't win the Super Bowl, the 1986 Cleveland Browns.
12:11The 86 Cleveland Browns, a great team.
12:15Do it our way, one play at a time.
12:17The Browns were minutes away from going to the Super Bowl.
12:23They were about, they would have been crushed in the Super Bowl anyway.
12:28Holy cow.
12:29Super Bowl.
12:30And it didn't happen.
12:32It was awful.
12:36This was a team that had that strong, iconic following.
12:42This team had players that people in Cleveland felt they could relate to.
12:47Bernie Kosar, the son of Cleveland Browns football.
12:50And everybody jumped on board.
12:52Everybody had 19 jerseys.
12:53An unbelievable throw by Kosar.
12:56Ernest Beiner and Kevin Mack, two great running backs.
12:59Browns are averaging six yards per carry.
13:02The 1986 Browns were not a great team.
13:04They didn't have a thousand-yard rusher.
13:06They didn't have a thousand-yard receiver.
13:09They didn't have anybody with ten sacks.
13:11Come on now.
13:12They went 12-4, had the great win against the Jets in double overtime.
13:17What happened?
13:18They beat the Jets.
13:21Okay.
13:24There was one Hall of Famer on that team.
13:28They don't belong on the list.
13:30Touchdown and the game is history.
13:34Cleveland wins it.
13:35And you're thinking this is their year.
13:36Let's look at it this way.
13:37They lost to a Broncos team that went on to get hammered in the Super Bowl.
13:41How good could they have been?
13:45In the AFC Championship, before 80,000 howling fans, the Pandemonium Palace that was Cleveland
13:52Stadium rocked with cries of a Super Bowl.
13:54They thought that this football team was going to win, go to the Super Bowl, and hopefully
13:58get a Super Bowl ring.
14:00There's a gleam.
14:01Beautiful.
14:04Let's get the gleam, all right?
14:06Let's go.
14:07It appeared the Browns would find their Super Bowl gleam late in the fourth quarter.
14:12Yeah, five.
14:13Touchdown, Brown.
14:14Brian Redden has got it for the upteeth time.
14:18They take the lead 20-13.
14:20They kick off.
14:21Denver fumbles it on the two-yard line.
14:23A big mistake by the Denver Broncos.
14:26So they've got to go 98 yards, okay, to just tie the game.
14:30We are going to win!
14:32At that point, Browns fans finally felt, we're going to the Super Bowl.
14:38The Browns thinking about Pasadena.
14:41And then as each play happened, got a little bit quieter.
14:46And then he drops back and he throws that slant for the touchdown.
14:53You could hear a pin drop in that stadium.
14:55It was about as gloomy as I've ever seen it in this town.
14:59Yeah, people were just shocked.
15:01Why did Marty go to the prevent defense?
15:03Why didn't they rush more?
15:04And in that drive, which was 98 yards, he was hitting wide open players.
15:08Why are you giving Elway all that time to scramble around and throw the football?
15:12That's where John Elway can do it on his own.
15:15Bring the house.
15:16Get after him.
15:17The game shouldn't even have been close in 86.
15:20We had spent five days in Florida and wanted to stay back and practice because the ball's different.
15:25You get used to the warm.
15:27I think we wasted a half and weren't as sharp as we needed to be.
15:32And Kozar is throwing for it.
15:34He's got a receiver wide open and drops the ball in the end zone.
15:40The Super Bowl within your grasp.
15:43And Elway took that away or Marty Schottenheimer took that away from him.
15:48Only in Cleveland do they make excuses about the weather and their home stadium that they play in all year.
15:56Give me a break.
16:05I think that team's right where it should be on the list, number six.
16:08I'm sure there are five other teams that are deserving to be where they are on this list.
16:12Way too low.
16:13Way too low.
16:14I cannot believe that.
16:15A vastly superior Rams team.
16:18It's our game.
16:19Going against the lowly Patriots that had to get there in the snowball and the tuck rule.
16:24After reviewing the play, it is easy.
16:26What, what?
16:27They sneak in.
16:28The Rams had won the Super Bowl two years earlier.
16:33They had Faw.
16:34Superman wears a 2-8 on his chest.
16:36They had Warner, the greatest show on turf.
16:38Warner takes.
16:38Throws the end zone.
16:40Touchdown, Rams.
16:41And the Patriots win?
16:42That's got to be higher.
16:43It's ridiculous.
16:47I'm going to try to blow them out of the state.
16:48Our number six team set a franchise record for wins in 2001 with 14.
16:54When they got going, they were lethal.
16:55I don't know how you tried to play them, how you tried to slow them down.
16:59And the Rams are just going right up and down the football field.
17:03That was a defensive coordinator's nightmare.
17:05And the Rams are pouring it off.
17:07And we ain't going to stop.
17:09Defense wasn't half bad either.
17:11They had Aeneas Williams, Hall of Famer, five Hall of Famers in total.
17:16Defense wasn't bad.
17:18They picked off Brett Favre six times in the divisional round.
17:26They were 14-2 in the regular season and amazingly were 8-0 on the road.
17:30And then I coming into somebody else's place and taking it over.
17:34The Rams beat the Patriots in Foxborough that season.
17:38Straight back.
17:39Unloads to Marshall.
17:39Inside to five.
17:40Driving for the end zone.
17:41Touchdown, Rams.
17:42Mike Martz said after that game that this was a Super Bowl team.
17:46It was the best team that we played to that point.
17:49I thought Belichick figured it out when he played him during the regular season.
17:53It was like a trial balloon.
17:55How am I going to play these guys and I get them again?
17:57The Patriots coach found our number 16's Achilles heel.
18:01Bill Belichick in that game beat Mike Martz psychologically.
18:06He understood that Mike Martz would want to throw the football.
18:10Give the football to Marshall Falk once in a while, Mike.
18:12He's not going to because Mike wants to win throwing the football.
18:16We're the best at it right now.
18:18Mike Martz has been kicked in whatever body parts you want to talk about.
18:23Of course, the Patriots went in and they were just going to beat up the Rams.
18:27Hit him.
18:28He was jawed on a big hit.
18:30Uh-oh.
18:31Hit him.
18:31Here comes a bump and rock.
18:32Hit him.
18:33Hit his head.
18:33Hit him.
18:34Well, the Rams' offense has never really gotten in rhythm.
18:37Let's beat the hell out of his receivers and his backs and try and screw up the timing that way.
18:41That's a little bit successful, man.
18:42All game long.
18:45Hindsight, we now realize how good the Patriots were about to become.
18:48That particular day, everybody thought the Rams were going to win anyway.
18:50One, two, three, win!
18:52The Patriots just had no business being on the same field as the St. Louis Rams.
18:55They're weak, man.
18:56The Rams were supposed to show up.
18:58They overrated.
18:59And it was supposed to be a coronation.
19:00Tom Brady, overrated.
19:02And it was supposed to be 50 points.
19:04We're going to get our props, man.
19:05And the Patriots were supposed to just be happy to be there.
19:08I said I was going to get you there!
19:10Yeah!
19:13If the Rams could beat...
19:15The Rams, this dome team, could beat the Patriots outside in the cold.
19:21Them getting them in a dome stadium in the Super Bowl, they were supposed to run them right over.
19:26Run them right out of the stadium and back to New England.
19:31Didn't happen.
19:35In the fourth quarter, we had this sense of, wow, the greatest show on turf is actually going to lose
19:41the Super Bowl.
19:42What a stutter here in Super Bowl 36!
19:45No one saw that coming.
19:47Many people think that Rams team in 01 was better than one in 99.
19:50And quite frankly, I think that's a misagring.
19:52The Rams head off the football field with their heads down.
19:55It was a team that was striving to be a dynasty.
19:58The Rams were so cognizant of the importance of that particular game to their legacy.
20:02Tonight, a dynasty is born, baby!
20:04They were a once-in-a-generation type team, and I think that they needed that win to solidify their
20:09place.
20:10And now, the number five best team that didn't win the Super Bowl, the 1981 San Diego Chargers.
20:16Give me the top five.
20:18Are you getting me?
20:20That one should be a bit higher.
20:22That was the year they probably, if not won the Super Bowl, at least should have got there.
20:27Bring on the rest of the NFL!
20:30They have to be on this list.
20:31They are one of my favorite teams of all time.
20:33Break two more tackles!
20:35Touchdown tackle!
20:36You guys are just making another mistake.
20:38I mean, I don't think it's a great team.
20:41They top five area?
20:42Maybe.
20:42But they're certainly top ten.
20:44I think the 1980 Chargers were better.
20:47And they did better in the games that really mattered.
20:53The Chargers' air-quarial offense reached new heights in 1981 as quarterback Dan Fouts set a new NFL record with
21:00more than 4,800 yards passing and 33 touchdowns.
21:04Teams were traditional then.
21:06I mean, you ran the football.
21:07You did all the fundamental things.
21:09The Chargers just attacked you.
21:12Great catch!
21:13Touchdown, Chargers!
21:14It changed the way the game is played.
21:17Bounce the quarterback.
21:18Fires a downfield.
21:19Touchdown!
21:20It was all timing and reads by the receivers, reads by the quarterback.
21:24Very difficult to defend.
21:26Is that what you wanted?
21:28The touchdown?
21:28Taking a tight end in Kellen Winslow and using him in ways that had never been done before.
21:34Into the end zone.
21:35Winslow!
21:36Touchdown!
21:37Good job, Kellen.
21:38Way to fight in there for him a bit.
21:42I'm not sure if these guys belong.
21:43This is a list of the top 10 teams, not the top 10 great offenses.
21:48San Diego made our list despite allowing 24 points per game and ranking last in pass defense.
21:55The defense was terrible.
21:57The pass defense was atrocious.
21:59Horton has thrown three touchdown passes and we're still in the first quarter.
22:03That's a team that you excuse their lack of defense because they're brilliant offense.
22:07If they'd had any type of defense, we'd be talking about the Chargers as one of the great teams we've
22:11ever seen in NFL history.
22:16When I used to think about taxes, I would just...
22:18In sixth finish, our number five team's biggest playoff obstacle was Mother Nature.
22:24I'm curious to know how much the heat can affect San Diego.
22:27You think about that playoff run.
22:29They go to Miami and play into overtime and everyone's exhausted.
22:33And the Chargers move on to the AFC championship game.
22:37And a week later, where do they go?
22:39They essentially go to the South Pole.
22:41The temperature in greater Cincinnati has dropped to nine below.
22:44We're talking a wind chill 59 degrees below zero.
22:48No one is comfortable when it's 59 below.
22:51That's one of the drawbacks if you have that type of offense.
22:54That if you get into bad weather, it might not work out for you.
22:57We were so focused on staying warm, you know, survival.
23:02And maybe it didn't play up to the level that we could have.
23:04I did have trouble throwing a spiral that day because of the cold and the wind.
23:08And the wind appeared to take that one.
23:10I was amazed at how easily Kenny Anderson threw tight spirals.
23:13And to the end zone, touchdown!
23:16The Bengals are champions!
23:19You can always look back at Cincinnati and go, what if, what if, what if?
23:24They're not only feeling the cold, they're feeling the pain of that score on the scoreboard.
23:28That wasn't really the 1981 Chargers.
23:31That was a team that had been neutered by the weather.
23:34The number four best teams that didn't win the Super Bowl.
23:371998 Minnesota Vikings.
23:39Really?
23:40The 98 Vikings?
23:42The mamby-pamby indoor glorified arena ball team?
23:46No, no, no, no, no.
23:47They were 15 and one.
23:50That's a dumbass hurt!
23:51They're that nubal for chum.
23:52Sadly, they didn't even make the Super Bowl and they make the stupid list.
23:58Some people say we didn't deserve it.
24:00Whatever.
24:01F*** you.
24:02We deserved it.
24:03That might be arguably the biggest missing ring.
24:06I mean, that team should have gotten the Super Bowl and they probably should have won it.
24:09Prior to that, only two teams had gone 15 and won it.
24:11And those are two teams that are teams for the ages.
24:14The Bears, the 85 Bears, the 84 49ers.
24:17It looked on paper and on the field like one of the great teams in league history.
24:21But they don't end the season at the conference championship game.
24:24It's like getting punched in the gut.
24:28That's a team that you always look at and you go,
24:31man, I really wonder what could have happened because they were just loaded.
24:36Playing the Minnesota Vikings is a track meet.
24:40That Minnesota offense I think was the best in NFL history.
24:42When you have Robert Smith as a good running back, a versatile guy.
24:46Touchdown, Vikings!
24:47Randall Cunningham having an MVP type season.
24:49Cunningham fires, what a catch!
24:51Chris Carter doesn't drop passes.
24:54You've got the recipe for, quite frankly, to be very, very good.
24:56Talk about the big plays the Vikings are known for in 98.
24:59Our number four team's big play offense scored 556 points
25:04thanks to a rookie who caught an NFL record 17 touchdowns.
25:08The Minnesota Vikings have selected wide receiver Randy Moss.
25:12Bombed out field of Moss.
25:14Juggles it.
25:15Oh!
25:17We're at the end of the year!
25:19Bye!
25:19He was this weapon that you thought was destined to win the Vikings a couple Super Bowl rings, not just
25:25one.
25:27You can chore the 1998, but for some people, not good enough for our countdown.
25:34The 98 Vikings were not even the best team that year.
25:37They played a very easy schedule.
25:39They had an average defense, and with the exception of Gary Anderson, they had average special teams.
25:43Okay, Gary, good job.
25:45It's not that much of a shock that they didn't make it to the Super Bowl.
25:48I'm so glad you can hear the season play.
25:50They absolutely have to be on this list.
25:51How many teams go 15-1?
25:53And if Anderson kicks a field goal, a chippy, they go to the Super Bowl.
25:58They'll go wins it.
25:59They have an opportunity to put this game out of reach.
26:01That's one of those ultimate jinxes.
26:04This guy's never missed.
26:05Anderson is connected on 46 consecutive field goals.
26:08He's not going to miss this kick.
26:10There's absolutely no way he can miss this kick.
26:12It missed wide to the left.
26:13Unbelievable.
26:14And it was, oh, I can't believe he just missed that kick.
26:19Gary Anderson has missed for the first time in two years.
26:25People got to stop blaming the kicker for everything.
26:28It's not the kicker's fault.
26:30The defense didn't stop Chris Chandler when they had to.
26:33That was intercepted by Robert Griffith.
26:35The Vikings let that opportunity slip away.
26:38We're taking a knee.
26:39We're taking a knee.
26:39They're going to run out the clock and hope for a nice overtime.
26:42Denny Green going conservative.
26:43The fans seem puzzled as to why they didn't try at least one more play.
26:47And the Vikings have never completely recovered from that game.
26:50The number three best team that didn't win the Super Bowl.
26:53The 1990 Buffalo Bills.
26:56That's the best team in the history of professional sports never to win a championship.
27:00Our number three team's lack of a title can be summed up with the two most painful words in Buffalo's
27:06history.
27:07Wide right.
27:08Wide right.
27:08Wide right.
27:09Wide right.
27:10That stuff never goes away.
27:11It's like body.
27:12Live there is to hear that on almost a daily basis.
27:16Wide right.
27:17Wide right.
27:19This is a team that is forever thinking wide right and waking up from nightmares of wide right.
27:26And it is no good.
27:27He missed it to the right.
27:29I realize I missed it.
27:31A big opportunity today.
27:33They don't even let him have buffalo wings.
27:35Norwood's doomed.
27:37Forever.
27:38He should become a monk.
27:431990, you kind of got a feeling early in the season that this was going to be their year.
27:48They found something that other teams couldn't defend.
27:51In the no huddle offense, Kelly to throw again.
27:54And it is hot.
27:55The NFL was left flat-footed by Buffalo's K-Gun offense.
28:00And I know the Raiders can cuckoo to no huddle offense, but they've never seen it the way the Bills
28:04run it.
28:05They just set an offensive pace that made it very hard for defenses to play against.
28:11And they had the personnel to make it work.
28:13Jim Kellick was a real forceful leader.
28:16Stick with me.
28:16We're going to get him.
28:17We're going to get him.
28:17And they had Thurman Thomas, who was a very versatile running back.
28:20Thurman Thomas, touchdown.
28:23They had Andre Reid running the underneath slants.
28:25Andre Reid scores.
28:27And then you had James Lofton stretching the field.
28:30James Lofton breaks another big play for the Bills.
28:33That K-Gun offense was good for a long, long time.
28:36But the Giants somehow found kind of the antidote to that.
28:42They abused and tired out the Bills defense.
28:48They didn't let the Bills offense get a chance to beat them because they didn't let them get on the
28:53field.
28:56It's the Giants against the Bills.
29:00Norwood's miss was the slamming door on the Bills' Super Bowl prison sentence.
29:05But Buffalo had plenty of other reasons for coming up short.
29:09Parcell said the only way we could win is to control that clock.
29:11And he did.
29:12Jim Kelly is watching helplessly up the sideline.
29:15At the end of the game, you look up and the Bills have won for 19 minutes.
29:17It's really incredible, that time is professional.
29:19That's the one Super Bowl that the Bills lose sleep over.
29:23They were better than the Giants.
29:24They played 10 times.
29:25They would have won 7 or 8 times.
29:26That one play to Mark Ingram.
29:28Third and about 13.
29:30Helped buy them time.
29:31And they play keep away.
29:32He's got Ingram for maybe a first down.
29:36But the Bills' defense weren't the only ones to blame for the loss.
29:42Defense, you have some responsibility for the defeat as well.
29:45I don't think Jim Kelly did a real good job on that drive.
29:48That is a long way to kick a football.
29:50Go back and look at the clock when the Bills run their last play.
29:55Kelly may spike the ball here.
29:57You're telling me that Jim Kelly can't run a play that is going to take 4 or 5 or 6
30:02seconds
30:03and the clock is stopped?
30:04Make it happen!
30:05Make it happen!
30:08I've never seen a team more stricken by a loss.
30:12It was a heartbreaking way to lose it.
30:14That loss to the Giants really ratcheted up the pressure on that team.
30:17Why do we deserve to lose the way we did today?
30:21I think if they had gotten that monkey off their back the first time,
30:24we might be looking back at the early 90s as a period when we saw the greatest team of all
30:28time.
30:29The number 2 best team that didn't win the Super Bowl, the 68 Baltimore Colors.
30:34People remember the 68 Colts only for how it ended for them.
30:37The New York Jets are the world champions.
30:40They have upset the Baltimore Colts.
30:42What's kind of lost in all that is what a dominating team they were during that season.
30:46That night has made too many forget that between July and January,
30:50the Colts recorded an historic season of football.
30:56This is one of those teams that you compare to some of the Lombardi Packers teams.
31:01What the hell's going on out here?
31:03While nobody will mistake the 68 Colts for Lombardi's Packers,
31:07it is amazing they were even in the conversation.
31:10It was a team that was in disarray at the beginning of the season because John Unitas had gotten hurt.
31:16Instead of Unitas, the man leading the Colts was Earl Morrow,
31:19a gypsy quarterback who had worked without distinction for four other teams before coming to Baltimore.
31:26Earl had no clue, numbering system the wrong way.
31:30We're going this way.
31:31The nigga on the left.
31:32Okay, okay, you're on the left.
31:34He went from a guy that was just a veteran journeyman backup to most valuable player in the league that
31:39year.
31:40Morrow's accurate passing put points on the scoreboard.
31:43And that is all Coach Don Shuler needed because nobody scored much against the Colts.
31:49Second in offense, first in defense.
31:53One of the top all-time defenses gave up 10 points a game.
31:59They had the best defense in the last 10 years in the NFL.
32:04Baltimore's defense just took the ball away from Tapp.
32:07They only gave up 154 points all season.
32:10Baltimore posted three regular season shutouts.
32:13And a fourth in the NFL championship game.
32:16In the NFL championship game, they beat Cleveland 34 to nothing.
32:19And it could have been worse.
32:20And it's been a very gloomy, gloomy Sunday in Cleveland.
32:23But in that great city of Baltimore, ain't a beer cold.
32:30I don't think they looked at the Jets in Namath and beat us.
32:33The Baltimore Colts are heavier favorites to win this Super Bowl game.
32:37And Green Bay won in 1967 and 1968.
32:40It was just so hard for NFL people to envision that game being very close.
32:45NFL people were right.
32:47The game wasn't close.
32:48But it was the NFL team that was manhandled.
32:52Everything that could go wrong did go wrong for us.
32:54The ball was right in the hands of Tom Mitchell.
32:57Popped up his hand.
32:59It's a touchdown.
33:00It was a day from hell.
33:02This game is over.
33:04The New York Jets are the world champions in a stunning upset.
33:11The way they performed in Super Bowl III, I think, caused a lot of people to think, maybe
33:16they really weren't that good after all.
33:18They almost shut out the Colts today.
33:21They said they were.
33:22They should have came out and beat the out of us.
33:25They weren't overrated.
33:26They were overconfident.
33:28The Colts that game in the first 31 minutes had four turnovers.
33:33There was that flea flicker where Jimmy Orr is.
33:35He's wide open.
33:36He's waving for the ball.
33:37They had Jimmy Orr all alone and they didn't see him.
33:39They should have won that game going away.
33:42The loss in Super Bowl III was so devastating, Baltimore carried the burden into Super Bowl V,
33:47where not even a world championship could console the Colts.
33:51And the Baltimore Colts have won the Super Bowl.
33:57To this very day, no January rolls around that I'm not forced to relive Super Bowl III.
34:04Joe running off the field, waving that single digit.
34:08We're number one.
34:11That never goes away.
34:13And now the number one best team that didn't win the Super Bowl, the 2007 New England Patriots.
34:20When you think of all the teams who were supposed to come away with that ring, the 2007 Patriots were
34:26the team.
34:28There may be a new America's team.
34:30Of course they should be number one.
34:32You go into a game 18-0.
34:34That's an incredible thing.
34:35Nobody does that.
34:36There's no team that's close to being as dominant as a team that goes 18-0 and then loses by
34:42a field goal in the final game.
34:4318-1.
34:48The 2007 Patriots were, in a word, dominant.
34:52And the Patriots machine is in high gear.
34:55Tom Brady sets a record for touchdown passes in a season.
34:59Touchdown pass number 50, an NFL record.
35:02Randy Moss sets a record for touchdown catches in a season.
35:05Touchdown reception number 23, an NFL record.
35:08It was like playing mad in NFL football, and you're playing an all-pro, and the computer's playing on rookie
35:14level.
35:14That's impressive.
35:18They actually were the team of excellence that was also kind of the team villain all season long because of
35:26Spygate.
35:26A lot of national media people questioning the validity of the Patriots' Super Bowl championships.
35:33Try to see what team y'all working for.
35:34Y'all working for the Pats, or y'all working for the NFL?
35:36Nothing rallies a football team more than the idea that everybody's out to get us.
35:41With their legacy in question, our number one team responded with the most effective type of rebuke.
35:48Winning.
35:49Oh, the bullet to Randy Moss.
35:51The Patriots just took it to him tonight.
35:53Things got bigger.
35:54The Patriots will go home at 3-0.
35:57And bigger.
35:57The Patriots are 5-0.
35:59And as they kept winning, it got more and more unbelievable.
36:02And the Patriots remain undefeated.
36:04How do you feel about being a 9-0 going into the bye week?
36:10There had to be something in the back of their heads once they get to 12, 13, 14.
36:16It'd be a great feat for the team.
36:18It'd be great to go down as the only team to be 16 and 0.
36:22We are not finished, fellas!
36:23We can go 19-0 and be the first team in history to do that.
36:27And the Patriots are 18-0.
36:31Super Bowl, here we come!
36:36The bubble's got to burst at some point, but it can't...
36:40It was not possible they could have lost that game.
36:44Can't burst in the Super Bowl, can it?
36:46The Patriots' bubble not only burst, it blew up in Super Bowl XLII.
36:52Looks left, lobs it left, bursts wide open, touchdown Giants!
36:56The New York Giants have knocked off the New England Patriots 17-14!
37:05They will always be known as the team that went into the Super Bowl at 18-0 and didn't finish
37:09it off.
37:10The Patriots will not be perfect!
37:12You can never convince me that going 18-0 didn't hurt them in the playoffs in the Super Bowl.
37:17That's a pile of garbage.
37:19It absolutely weighted them down.
37:20The expectations, the Super Bowl hype, they went for it.
37:24Good...
37:24How can winning as many games as possible be a bad thing?
37:29For them.
37:30And you do have to remember that they came within two minutes of winning the Super Bowl.
37:34Fires, touchdown!
37:36Randy Moss!
37:37And the Patriots regain the lead!
37:39And when you look at that game, they're a missed pick.
37:42Adzante Samuel went high in the air to try to intercept it.
37:46A third down conversion.
37:48Gonna be sacked!
37:50No, he got out of it!
37:51Now he fires downfield!
37:53A helmet catch.
37:54And it is caught!
37:56How in the world did he do that?
37:58From winning that Super Bowl.
37:59And there's no evidence whatsoever, none, that in the striving that the Patriots cost themselves.
38:08Every bit of luck turned against them in the fourth quarter of that game against the Giants.
38:13That's why they're not number one on the list of all-time great teams, and they end up being the
38:16number one team on the list of teams that never won the Super Bowl.
38:19Too big.
