01:24you got to have guts second and then you got to have that quick first step to say i'm not

01:36well where can i start with dante hall he's the best i've ever been around
01:40dante hall got ready to catch the ball people got out all right dante
01:48you got me he got me he's just like a little net
02:11you need a little flash water try to catch him look like he'd be in a box of four guys
02:16and he'd somehow come out of that paul is piled on now he gets away on second effort dante hall

02:23his feet still not down dante hall with one of the most incredible moves you'll ever see how did he

02:30that the next thing you know he's in the end zone dante hall the human joystick they call them someone
02:37said it's like playing an atari game with a joystick the human joystick with the touchdown
02:44i thought that was a great nickname because that's what he was here you are with the greatest athletes
02:48in the world and you're making them look silly dante hall's going to do it again
02:54i think dante hall had one of the greatest returns in history i just remember the the pinball return
02:59versus the broncos he catches it inside the 10-yard line makes the first man miss looking to try to

03:06to the outside and then he actually starts running backwards it seemed like every bronco had at
03:11least three chances at him he's in trouble he's surrounded now he gets to the left side he's got
03:17nobody but the kicker in front of him he winds up taking it all the way for a touchdown that
03:22wins the game
03:22touchdown on an unbelievable
03:30so when he wasn't there there was nobody back there
03:36it was one of those where you you just can't believe you just saw that that's why he's the best
03:41that's why he's the best right now
03:45paul's 12 return touchdowns are second most in league history thanks in large part to one huge
03:52season dante hall had in 2003 one of the greatest seasons we've ever seen from a return man our number
03:5910 ace earned a pro bowl spot after returning four kicks for touchdowns in four straight weeks he's gonna
04:10get out right there he was actually considered early in the season for nfl mvp we assumed it was
04:17going to last six seven eight years as it turned out he didn't last very long at all he had
04:23two
04:24really good years for most of the time other than that he was basically an average return man tante hall
04:29yeah what happened to that guy he's still in the league and i didn't even know that the last couple
04:34years i didn't even know he was still in the league dante has to make a man miss makes a
04:38move 20. for a
04:39while there he was the scariest player in the nfl dante hall 86 yard touchdown then sort of went away
04:48but when he was great he was the best talk about a guy who had a few great years three
04:57years nine
04:58touchdowns the other six years of his career three touchdowns
05:03touchdowns that's that's six times worse
05:14touchdowns have been delivered by anonymous return men names like
05:20clinton walker and stanford jennings may ring a bell but only for their one shining moment
05:28in super bowl 35 ron dixon of the giants and jermaine lewis of the ravens had back-to-back
05:35kickoff returns for touchdown
05:39becoming just the second and third players ever with multiple postseason return tds
05:44the first is next on our list the number nine return ace of all time desmond howard
05:54desmond howard's one of the rare guys who at the position he entered the league at wide receiver
05:59one of the top overall picks in 1992 he was a complete and total bust when desmond howard was
06:06returning kicks he was in his element that's what he'd like to do that's what he excelled at but once
06:10he put him in an offense he was a different player as a receiver not much as a return guy
06:15he was electric there was so much expectation placed on him because of what he did at michigan
06:23that he never really lived up to it he was an unbelievable weapon at michigan
06:30his signature play was in the ohio state game there's no game more important in this area than
06:34michigan ohio state it was so delicious seeing that because how could anyone strike that pose in
06:47that situation right there he endeared himself in the hearts of michigan fans forever
06:54after taking home the heisman in 1991 our number nine returnees had three largely unsuccessful seasons
07:01in washington and a year in exile with the expansion jaguars but then it all came together
07:07for the biggest of our big game returners desmond howard probably had the best punt return season of
07:13all time in 1996. that year howard set the single season record for punt return yards and returned to
07:20his home away from home to light up the lions i remember 50 40 30 and the roar started to
07:25grow and all
07:27i looked around and i said wow there's a lot of packer fans here today and it was desmond who
07:31brought
07:31him out i decided to try to give them a little treat and i dusted off the heisman pose desmond
07:36howard
07:36has got it again when you have a guy like doesn't how it is such a threat there's no doubt
07:43that without
07:43him we would not have gotten to the super bowl to the 40 on his feet to the 45 outside
07:48midfield to the 45
07:51did this in mud look at the field the score on your first punt return in the playoff game at
07:59lambeau
07:59field it doesn't get any better than that for me a bold statement considering just two games later
08:05his 51 steps to glory helped the packers win super bowl 31. they say big players make big plays in

08:12games and desmond howard sealed the mvp trophy with that return that places him in my book in the return
08:17man hall of fame through a hole with the 20 to the 30 outside to the 40. it was just
08:23make a move
08:23on vinatieri and then get to the robot touchdown for desmond howard the biggest thing i remember
08:29about desert is the robot in the super bowl it was just kind of awkward kind of funny
08:39is there a super bowl mvp pose have you made one up howard is the only return man who ever
08:46earned
08:46super bowl mvp honors and three years later he had one more big game return back where it all
08:53started against the team that drafted him the lions lose their return man with a broken hand on like
08:59a friday night they get desmond howard signed on saturday and darn if he doesn't return a punt for
09:03a touchdown against the redskins he's gone he's gone touchdown desmond howard he's unbelievable
09:10i think desmond had a very very very worthwhile career he was one of the best returning men of
09:15his era and he was a super bowl mvp i'll take that okay i'll take that any day of the
09:20week
09:25i'm a baseball player i know the world doesn't know but i really you know when that was my heart
09:31i'm playing baseball josh cribs no longer plays baseball but he is still a home run threat
09:51stand he was a street free agent out of kent state he was a quarterback now wasn't going to get
09:59a chance
09:59he's a quarterback so he said okay how can i make an nfl team well special teams my goal was
10:05to make
10:05an nfl doing anything possible no matter what it took cribs used his quarterback experience to make
10:11his mark as a kick returner he just sees the field in a way that i think a lot of
10:17other people don't
10:18a lot of it has to do with his vision and the way he sees the field the way he
10:24sees
10:24things on kickoff return he sees the hole and he can hit it break tackles and keep going
10:32the thing that makes josh cribs so exciting is the fact that he's almost like a linebacker running
10:38down there i mean when he's returning a kick i mean you better watch out because you're going to get
10:43the forearm shiver you're going to get run over his legs never stop moving when you hit him you got
10:49to keep your legs moving he's like a defender running down there he's like a running back he's like
10:54a receiver he's all kinds of things rolled into one our number eight return ace is all kinds of
11:00things cribs doesn't just return kicks he covers them usually the big time returners
11:08don't do anything on a from a coverage perspective but he can go out and play gunner and you have
11:14to
11:15deal with him as a gunner josh cribs is taking out his own competition for top 10 returnmen and that's
11:20why i love josh cribs okay he has that winner's mindset that desire to win and do whatever it takes
11:29well see that one six say oh lord i repent for anything there's always the feeling that he's
11:36going to take this back crib's resume building moment came in december of 2009 when he returned two
11:44kicks the length of the field in the first half alone he's in a 40 he's out running the chiefs

11:52have two 100 yards or more in the same game i mean they know he's coming and yet they still
11:58can't stop
11:59him 100 yards for cribs everyone believes they can stop him and you know he just says i dare you
12:07i dare you to kick it to me the eighth kickoff return in his career for a touchdown move over

12:14record books here comes josh cribs that's josh cribs and sometimes you want to come off the bench and
12:20try to tackle him yourself but i'd probably miss too
12:26i enjoy and i love telling people i wasn't driving they're like what round you go second third first
12:32round like try no round you know i would have loved to hear my name on draft day but i'm
12:38so
12:38glad it wasn't because i still have a chip on my shoulder and he proved he belonged on the list
12:46more than half of his return yards came after this came out he had five return touchdowns after this came
12:53out he had his best season of his career returning the ball after this came out
13:04up next our first controversy and it's a big one i can't believe it but they couldn't beat out
13:11another running back as the best of that era number seven return ace of all time
13:18gail sayers
13:21here we go again i can't believe you didn't give gail sayers more respect than that
13:36i can't believe he's number seven there's something wrong with that list gail sayers may have been
13:42the best kick returner in the history of national football league if you look at the numbers
13:46gail sayers averaged i think about 31 yards of return that's pretty good that's pretty good
13:52here he is galloping gail carrying the mail 1967 was the season for him he only returned a couple
13:59of punts but he averaged 26.7 yards upon return he averaged 37.6 yards per kickoff return and returned
14:08three of them for touchdowns that was probably the greatest returning season anybody ever had
14:14give me 18 years today right that's all i need i remember sitting in front of a tv set as
14:20a kid watching
14:20gail sayers and i never saw anything like it that guy was unbelievable he could turn a game anytime
14:27he wanted with a return yes there's one block you get in the way i do something he's gone he
14:33was
14:33returning kicks and punts while he was carrying both i could have randomly referring to yourself in the
14:40third person strange uh he averaged 26 and a half yards per punt and kick return
14:52combined eight touchdowns he spent four years returning punts and kicks
14:59and he's seven while spending energy being a running back a hall of fame running back
15:07he was doing this at 80 percent 75 percent energy imagine him just being a return guy
15:18seven he's top three
15:22ball 15 times you know then all of a sudden now hey i gotta run back a tongue turn
15:28he was just a football player that's my definition of him it's a backyard football he does whatever
15:33it takes from beginning to end i remember watching one of his kick returns and he was coming up the
15:37middle and the guy was coming attacking from the left side and he just stopped and the guy went by
15:43and i'm like how do you see that guy i had great privilege when i looked at the field i
15:48could see
15:49everybody on the field so i wasn't concerned about oh he's coming over here he'll knock me down or
15:54somebody here i could see these prayers the ability to change directions just be here move here and be
16:09gone great running back is a hall of fame running back so we don't always categorize him as a return
16:15man
16:16if you'd made him just the return man
16:21did you know he didn't play that long true sayers only had 118 returns in his career my career was
16:29short okay but i don't have a problem i don't have a team i enjoyed it i loved it and
16:35uh the things
16:36that i did on the football field speaks for themselves if you're looking at one kick return with your life
16:42on the line who are you going to send back to catch the ball i'm sending gal sayers back
16:58even though he may not pass the sayers test rick up he doesn't pass my test either for what is
17:06worth
17:06he was only good at returning punts you're an all-time return guy you have to be good at returning
17:13both he should he shouldn't be above sayers or or cribs way too high on the list
17:22upstairs exploded onto the scene in the mid 1970s by tying the record for the most punt return
17:28touchdowns in the season with four in just his second year good returners don't run east and west they run
17:35north and south and rick was one of those guys rick up church was unbelievable week in and week out
17:41he's worth the ticket price i just remember like liking his name watching him play i think rick
17:46up church had a real knack to get in the open and have the speed to do it if you
17:50had your drubbers you
17:51wouldn't kick the ball to rick you'd kick it away from him the good coverage teams that's what they do
17:55they don't kick to him and see how good they are they kick away from him to see if he
17:59can still handle it
18:02up church spent much of the middle part of his career primarily as a wide receiver but in 1982
18:09under new head coach dan reeves our number six return ace took two more punts back to the house
18:15which at the time tied him for the most returned tds in league history rick was so explosive you've got
18:23one chance to tackle this guy if you don't get him he's off to the races he was one of
18:28those guys
18:29that had the courage to make those tough catches a lot of guys go out there and they want
18:32to get some football because he knew if he got in his hands he had a chance to go to
18:40distance
18:40i just didn't fear anyone as far as the football field was concerned
18:45our number six returnees also held a special place in the hearts of his team's biggest rival
18:52rick upchurch was so slippery so fast and also had a big mouth and he would drive you crazy he
19:00would be
19:01right in your face i'll never forget one time we're playing the broncos huge game i forget it was tatum
19:07accuracy somebody just took him and drilled him it it was such a blatant 15-year-old penalty i don't
19:13believe it what was he thinking they couldn't stand him anymore so up church won the battle you know
19:19he went over his mouth because the altitude some people swore when up church was returning kicks
19:26he was toying with him like a cat and a mouse just to watch him run out of gas at
19:32mile high stadium but
19:33that wasn't the only advantage the mile high air gave him i almost have to dock some points from
19:38rick upchurch because he played in denver where the air is a little bit thinner i think it's a little
19:43easier to catch punch when you have hang time and we got a guy named ray guy that just loved
19:48to kick
19:49the ball a million miles so rick would have you know maybe 15 yards to work with we're usually about
19:55five that's a subtlety of the return game but i dock a point or two from rick upchurch just because
20:00he played in denver keep going baby don't run out of gas i'm sure that helped a little bit but
20:05i think
20:06up church with his talent and his speed could make that work in almost any nfl stadium this guy is
20:11just simply amazing he was clearly ahead of the game in terms of when he was playing and for years
20:17afterwards he was still somebody that you would look to as a prototype but when he was boy he could
20:25change the game and now the number five returns of all time mel gray i would have to say mel
20:34gray should
20:34be a little higher than that is there any better than national football league i think he's one of
20:38the more underrated guys i think it's a wise choice because i don't think a lot of people would recognize
20:47him today as one of the top 10 return guys gray began his career in 1986 with the saints but
20:55it
20:55was primarily as a member of the lions where our number five return age showed off his number one
21:01trait his thing was speed oh he was quick that's his third kickoff return for the touchdown this year
21:08coaches were screaming everybody hustled to the ball everybody get to him we need 11 guys
21:15to tackle him and you would all come walking over to the sidelines saying what happened we prepared
21:22for this guy but he just couldn't stop him from getting to the end as the old adage goes for
21:27every
21:27action there is an equal and opposite reaction he took some huge hits it's as hard a hit as you're
21:34ever gonna see wayne fonts used to joke that he would go into the pile so fast that sometimes he'd
21:39get
21:39knocked back out even faster watching mel gray made me realize that the greatest attribute a kick
21:47returner can have and he had was fearlessness where you collect the ball you just pick a hole and you
21:52go and if you get hit you get hit hard and you are down but if you first through that
21:58hole you're gone
21:58he's off to the races the amazing thing about mel gray was he never lost that fearlessness nobody's
22:08going to catch him now gray's going all the way for the touchdown in his 12 seasons gray scored nine
22:16touchdowns and retired in 1997 as the league's all-time leading kick return a lot of returners in
22:24this league do it for a year or two it's the special ones like mel gray who do it year
22:28after
22:29year after year that is really hard to do 101 yard kickoff return by mel gray he made four pro
22:36bowls here in detroit in a six year span and i once asked one of the guys who was a
22:41hall of fame
22:41celebrity could a return specialist who's clearly the best of his era and mel gray was could he make
22:47the hall of fame and the guy said i'd vote for him oh he's never come up and he never
22:50will but he was
22:51that good for that period of time and the number four return ace of all time deon sanders can't be
22:59this
22:59you think kick returner you think deon sanders it's almost like deon sanders invented that position
23:05i think him as a corner if he wasn't an all-time great corner
23:11well the all-time great corner he wouldn't be in anywhere in the top eight
23:21he didn't have the numbers
23:27deon showcased his invention in his very first nfl game one man missed him another man missed him
23:35now he's going wide off to the right deon to the 25 to the 30 to the 35 to 40.

23:41going to score his threat in the kicking game was just enormous there was just something about deon
23:49sanders waiting to receive the kick deon sanders back deep for the falcons it created a level of
23:55anticipation come on come on come on it was almost palpable he was one of these guys where everybody
24:01got on the edge of the seat you kind of expected him always to do something kind of brilliant
24:05sanders to the 25 sanders to the 10 he did it again
24:14deon sanders in his prime was a very legitimate threat to score every time he touched the ball
24:20he was exceptionally up and by the way faster than all the really fast guys in the league
24:29he's going baby
24:42deon sanders brought not only tremendous talent to the return position he brought an awful lot of sizzle
24:49i don't know that i've ever seen a more confident football player on the field i mean man he he
24:54had
24:54more confidence in himself he told you he was going to return a punt for a touchdown
24:59and that's exactly what he did deon sanders touchdown prime time does it again i think he's one of the
25:11first nfl players to be that bold and that trash and still deliver supreme arrogance i'm deon sanders
25:20i'm great you didn't catch me too bad for you touchdown me you don't have to look at the watch
25:28and see what time it is when the camera was on it was prime time it was time for him
25:37to put on a
25:37show you wanted to see that moment where he broke out free and he high-stepped his way into the
25:43end
25:56zone
25:57what deon sanders did surely seeing him on the field was the best but seeing him in the end zone
26:02was
26:02almost as fun and the deon shuffle follows in the end zone
26:10you'll find this piece of tape he returned to punt against buffalo one year at the end of the
26:17return you'll see one of the buffalo guys can go up to him and actually pat him on the behind
26:22as if to say hey you just kicked our butt but that was nice
26:30probably the only thing that might keep deon sanders for being the top return man of all time
26:36is all the other things he had to do on the field play defense
26:40deon sanders has an interception even play wide receiver for one season
26:48most guys who are doing what he did wanted to get off the field and take a blow i love
26:52that deon
26:53one to stay on the field i think he's number one and everybody else is tied for number ten
26:57deon is a top three guy to me i probably wouldn't put him up that high not high enough oh

27:20yes billy white shoes johnson he was the first of the great return men in the nfl you want us

27:26after it you want to return sorry billy johnson will feel this one he was the first returner to
27:32develop a strong identity billy white shoes white shoes white shoes a little fella they called billy
27:39white shoes you have to have a nickname i mean that adds to it he was wearing the low-cut

27:45which he probably painted himself because i don't even think they were selling white shoes in stores
27:48it perked your attention because you never seen that before it was something that was fresh it was
27:53something new nobody had seen anything like him billy johnson here he goes again billy johnson across
27:59midfield he's still on his feet nobody knew who billy was but it didn't take him long because he was
28:04an instant hit electrifying return by billy white shoes johnson he was a little small guy he was about
28:13five nine you couldn't catch him little number 84 billy johnson a slippery escape artist who can turn
28:20a simple punt return into a geometry lesson best way to describe it is trying to catch a hummingbird or
28:27maybe a lightning bug because billy was everywhere whenever i get the ball i don't know where i'm going
28:35or what i'm going to do i know i'm supposed to go i don't think half the time the guys
28:39blocking for
28:40them they knew where he was going he didn't just get the ball and go he moved he'd reverse his
28:44field
28:45he'd come back if he goes to the right don't chase him because he'll be coming back
28:57somebody said he could stop on a dime and he can leave you change
29:01he had that juke if you will that he the first guy missed and then he was off to the
29:05races you
29:05were just chasing his shadows johnson off to the races down the sideline he's still on his feet
29:10when he'd get his hands on the ball on the point everybody stand up he would never hesitate
29:15on his first step he's going full speed

29:32billy white shoes was uh more of a showman i remember billy white shoes is one of the first guys
29:39that kind of celebrated after he scored touchdown billy johnson all of a sudden you started to see a
29:46little bit of entertainment value coming to the nfl billy white shoes johnson the funky chicken
29:52the funky chicken the funky chicken oh no not the funky chicken
29:57the greatest celebratory dance in the history of the nfl without a doubt call him what you will
30:06this michael jackson in cleats gene kelly in cleats you just wanted to see him do the dance i love
30:13him doing his little thing with his legs going in and out where his legs would do this and he'd
30:18do
30:18the splits and then he did the splits he came down to the ball and then he lifted up and
30:24he brought it
30:24back and he flipped it behind his back i would say right here you've got to go to billy white
30:28shoes
30:28and do a little dance unbelievable showmanship to me still the best fans loved him his teammates loved
30:35him opponents hated him because of the people remember the dance but he was a really good
30:42football player for return longevity he's next on our countdown number two with the ace of all time
30:50brian mitchell what's interesting about brian mitchell is that he never returned to kick till
30:56he got to the national football league and that's what i plan on doing returning everything he taught
31:00himself how to become a kick returner the first time he stepped on an nfl field our number two
31:06return ace proved to be a quick study rookie brian mitchell was trying of course to impress the redskins
31:12coaches and earn a spot on that squad the first time i returned a kick in the league i returned
31:17us
31:17down in the preseason game and a good hole right away that's o'brien he is gone it would be
31:24the last time
31:25anyone messed up brian mitchell's name when you take the opening kickoff back and the first preseason
31:30game all the coaches sit up and go hey we gotta watch that guy well that's what you call making
31:35an early statement there chuck i guess the temptation is when that happens probably the people that saw
31:39and thought well beginners luck really oh really touchdown touchdown touchdown brian mitchell
31:46he not only became good at it there are some people that would say he became the best at it
31:53uh it's just hall of famers look brian mitchell was the standard really for kick returners and punt
32:00returners because he wasn't a guy who would dance he'd get it and go straight forward
32:04mitchell made that happen by running through traffic on three different occasions and making
32:11the play a lot of guys were smaller than i was and they were those shifty guys if they had

32:17they might have ran 15 because they did too much other stuff i went straight ahead mitchell will get
32:22a chance to return at this time brian mitchell is going close to coast for a touchdown i think if
32:29you constantly get the job done it doesn't make a difference how you get there i just got the job
32:33done you know mr get the job done you gotta be scratching and biting and fighting baby and i'm
32:38willing to do all three of them the best part about brian mitchell is when you saw him he didn't
32:44have
32:44the greatest body in the world you looked at him in the locker and said this guy's like the greatest
32:48return man in nfl history he had huge arms thick chest big legs brian mitchell is he something he was
32:56a fullback returning punts when everybody else was a receiver or slot back you know most of those guys
33:03are with 165 to about 190 and i played at 215 to 225. spurt to the 40 cut back he's
33:10gone he was a muscular
33:12guy and when he hit you it hurt if you tried to arm tackle brian mitchell in the middle of
33:18the field
33:18he would rip your arm off oh what a great way he wasn't going to try he wasn't going to
33:24try and out
33:25run you he was going to run through you and once again bravo brian mitchell i've never seen a return
33:32man who loved contact as much as he did you give him your best shot and he get up and
33:37say that's all you
33:38god the guy that just bounced off brian mitchell on the lions was tracy hay worth 260 pounds
33:57he bounced off him like an eight-year-old kid trying to tackle his dad outside
34:08mitchell was great because he sustained it over his entire career you have to show that you can
34:13do it at a high level on a consistent basis that's why i think brian mitchell deserves a high spot
34:17on
34:17the list and you're a hell of a player man he may not have had those amazing seasons like dante
34:23hall
34:23but he kept being one of the top return men in the league year after gear after gear touchdown for
34:30the
34:30one time into the end zone let me jump here we go here we go here we go one two

34:38brian mitchell he has just set an nfl record for return touchdowns the 13th in his career i mean he
34:47retired with more combined return yardage than any player in football history if he's not number one
34:53no one is who's number one coming up our experts aren't exactly head over heels about who's number
35:02one depending on your number one and now the number one return base of all time devin hester
35:10the window city flyer the man they call any time devin hester's gonna return it first to the 25 30
35:15opening 35 40. devin hester is great yeah he's one of the best at it as a matter of fact
35:24his numbers
35:24in this first year and a half of trying it were unprecedented but to say he's the best of all
35:30time i think is nuts you can't win for nothing man devin is the hot thing now or the hot
35:37thing two years
35:37ago last year he has been susceptible to the same problems as every other great kick returner it
35:44didn't last he lost his job as a kick returner halfway through 2008 he's not a game changer as
35:50a return man anymore so i think the jury's still out on whether or not devin hester is the best
35:54ever
