00:00The DAP Women's Wing has criticized police investigations into vague allegations of a
00:06plot to overthrow the government after commentators and civil society figures were summoned for
00:11questioning. Sangeet Cardio, the Wing's legal bureau chief, said that if there are genuine
00:17crimes, authorities should clearly identify them and explain the conduct constituting those
00:22offenses. She said sweeping interrogations create an atmosphere of intimidation and concerns about
00:29misuse of investigative powers. Sangeet said state machinery must never be used to silence critics
00:35and that democracies are strengthened by responding to dissent with accountability and respect for the
00:40rule of law. Police have recorded statements from 14 witnesses including Shahza Shukri from
00:46International Islamic University Malaysia, Pushpan Murugia, CEO of the Center to Combat Corruption
00:51and Cronyism, and Nizamuddin Hamid, lawyer acting for former finance minister Daim Zainuddin's widow
00:57Naima Khalid. Sangeet warned that suggesting these witnesses' work could be detrimental to
01:03parliamentary democracy distorts the purpose of Section 124B of the Penal Code, which targets
01:08genuine threats to the constitutional system of government. She also said the constitution
01:13guarantees freedom of speech and that many Pakatan Harpan leaders once relied on that freedom
01:18while in opposition to criticize the government. Dan Sharjereza, FMT.
