Seth and Sean see what Keith Sanchez of the Draft Network has the Texans doing with the 28th overall pick in today's Mock Draft Injection.
Transcript
00:00We do one every day at 745. We look at a mock draft. We analyze it. We agree. We disagree
00:05and discuss the draft here for a few minutes. So, Seth, let's do this one. This is the this is
00:10the draft network. The draft networks. Keith Sanchez has a mock draft up. It's current. It's post the first three
00:21days of free agency.
00:22That, quite honestly, is the hardest part of finding mock drafts right now is finding mock drafters who've had who've
00:28had the the the wherewithal and the the chutzpah to put a new mock draft out post free agency.
00:36Yeah. Keith Sanchez is the hero that we needed. He's done that.
00:40I don't know if he did this one in light of the news we heard yesterday about this particular player.
00:45But it gets very interesting when the 28th overall pick in the Keith Sanchez draft network mock draft, the Houston
00:55Texans select Caleb Banks, interior defensive lineman from Florida.
01:00And this is what he says. The Houston Texans have the most dominant defense in the NFL, led by their
01:06vicious edge rushers, Daniil Hunter and Will Anderson.
01:09The one group on this defense that could use improvement is the interior defensive line position in this spot.
01:15The Texans go with Florida interior defensive lineman Caleb Banks at six, six, three thirty.
01:21He's a good athlete and has versatility, adding yet another element to an early dangerous defense.
01:27What Keith Sanchez is not including here is the news yesterday that Caleb Banks reportedly has a broken foot for
01:34the second time this calendar year.
01:36Correct. Yes. And it's believed that he suffered it at the combine in some way.
01:43Now, yeah, he did a workout the night before like a partial workout, like a warm up type workout the
01:48night before the on field stuff.
01:49And apparently didn't realize how injured it was. But now he's going to need surgery to repair this broken foot.
01:55After he had an injured foot during the season that ended up with him only playing three games.
02:01Yeah, he didn't play many games at all this year.
02:03Now, he still this is what was impressing people yesterday, Seth, on the socials was they went back and looked
02:09like, oh, he still ran a really fast 40.
02:12Yeah. Even with a busted foot. Yeah. So but I feel like I don't I feel bad for the guy
02:19because, man, two foot injuries for a large man in one calendar year.
02:24I read two articles on this. Neither of them said if it's the same foot that he injured or not
02:29during the season.
02:30That would be OK. One of our listeners probably knows which is which would make you more nervous if it
02:35was the same foot or if it was the other foot.
02:37It would make me more nervous. It was if it was the other foot. Yeah.
02:40Yeah. Then you start wondering, like, all right, this big guy is one of these classic guys.
02:43It's too big and athletic for his own. His own body can't handle me.
02:47And there's one thing I know, having played defensive tackle in the NFL, Sean, you you use your feet a
02:53lot.
02:53You need your feet. Yeah. You're just you're constantly it's good. I may not realize this.
02:58Yeah. This is why, you know, you don't know because you didn't play the game.
03:01It's left foot, right foot, left foot, right foot all the time with this position.
03:06My goodness. No kidding.
03:08Do you have the stomach to take a big man like this at 28?
03:11He's he's going. He's going like before.
03:16Yeah. No, no, I know.
03:17Not a foot injury. He was like a top 12 pick in a lot of mock drafts.
03:20Yeah, I know. I don't. I don't.
03:24You know, what it reminds me of is what's his name?
03:26The the defensive end that was right there with Will Anderson.
03:30Tyree Wilson. Yeah. Tyree Wilson.
03:32He had that. He had his foot injury that was undisclosed.
03:35That's what saved me from wanting to take Tyree Wilson over Will Anderson.
03:39Yeah. Was I realized about his injury history a couple of weeks before the draft or even less time before
03:45that.
03:45Before. So I changed my desired pick to Will Anderson.
03:48And thank God, the worst thing that could have happened to anybody in this world was for me to be
03:52wrong on a draft projection.
03:54Yeah. Oh, yeah. That would have been catastrophic. Yeah.
03:57City never would have recovered.
03:58I want to do an exercise with you here.
04:00So you don't want Caleb Banks with the 28th overall pick.
04:02I'm nervous. I'm nervous.
04:04I hope the best for him.
04:05I think I think he could be a good NFL player, but I just I'm nervous about two broken feet.
04:09What I'm about to ask you is with the assumption that the Texans have satisfied other needs to your to
04:15your satisfaction.
04:17What about the 38th overall pick for Caleb Banks?
04:21No.
04:22What about the 59th overall pick for Caleb Banks?
04:25Sure. There we go. That's where I'd be OK with that.
04:27That's that's that's the exercise. That's like, what is what is this injury?
04:31Because he's a good player.
04:33He I agree with Keith Sanchez that I think it does fill a need.
04:37I think of your power ranking needs in this draft.
04:40Obviously, the offensive line is still a huge need for this team.
04:42I would still take another running back.
04:44That's just me.
04:45And then I think interior defensive line getting getting younger on the interior of the defensive line.
04:50That's a good point, because I look, they re-signed Sheldon Rankins and Tommy Togiai has been a revelation in
04:56the Texans sign Logan Hall.
04:57I like the upside of Logan Hall, but that they I mean, last year, I don't want to operate like
05:03last year was a normal thing.
05:04But they had four guys who could have been starters at any point in the season go on IR at
05:10defensive tackle.
05:11Yes.
05:11Their depth was really, really tested.
05:14I just yeah, I think you get down into the third round and that's where it feels like depending on
05:19again, if it's the same foot and it was some kind of complication from the surgery,
05:24I still get nervous about that because that goes back to remember Kevin Johnson had the broken foot that never
05:29healed.
05:30It just always ended up being, oh, no, it turns out he has to have a screw removed.
05:34And it looks like he rebroke the surgery.
05:37It makes me nervous that he's had two foot issues in less than a full calendar year.
05:45As a guy at his size and athleticism, that that's where maybe in the third round, you're you're comfortable saying,
05:52wow, if it works out, this guy could end up being incredible.
05:54Yeah.
05:55Foot injuries are sneaky, scary, though, man.
05:57I'm with you on that.
05:58But I was like if the Texans were to draft him, I would just have to throw my faith into
06:03the medical staff and their judgment of it.
06:05And I'd be excited about I'd be excited about the prospect and the upside.
06:08Absolutely.
06:09Here was Adam Schefter.
06:10He said something interesting yesterday.
06:12He was he was doing an interview with Ty Schmidt, who's part of McAfee's crew there.
06:17And he said something interesting that I had not heard from anybody yet about how teams are approaching not just
06:23this upcoming draft in a month or so, but the draft in 2027 as well.
06:28The most underrated part of free agency, the least talked about, most significant thing that I heard over the last
06:34couple of weeks was how much teams are trying to hoard draft picks in 2027.
06:42It's amazing how when these trades come up, oftentimes teams are targeting draft picks in the draft of 2027.
06:54They are looking at that quarterback class.
06:57They are looking at all the great players in next year's draft and saying, I want in because the value
07:05of those players right now is greatly anticipated.
07:09It is going to be a quarterback, deep, strong draft, which is going to add to the value of those
07:14picks.
07:15There are a number of other great players at other positions, and it feels like when teams are having trade
07:20discussions, they want picks not in 2026.
07:23And the draft that will be held in just over a month in Pittsburgh, they want draft picks in 2027
07:30in the NFL draft that will be held in Washington, D.C.
07:35Okay, so that was Adam Schefter saying that.
07:37There's two things on this, Seth.
07:38One, that does jibe with what the experts seem to feel about this year's draft, that this year's draft is
07:45a little bit weak just in general.
07:47I mean, I'm not John Harris, so I have no idea, like, what the, you know, the substance behind that.
07:52It's just, you know, at 30,000 feet, this is viewed as a weak, certainly viewed as a weak quarterback
07:56draft.
07:57There's no question about that.
07:59But that leads into my second point.
08:00I feel like we hear this every year.
08:02The best quarterback class is always the one that's coming up in two years.
08:05Yeah, that's how I go.
08:06You look at all these guys.
08:07Right, meanwhile.
08:08And then, and then.
08:09Every year, it's the one that's coming up a year from now.
08:12Like every other year, the guy that's a slam dunk, going to be the number one overall pick, is a
08:17middling prospect by the end of the season and everything.
08:19He's in a transfer portal.
08:20Yeah, they're just, yeah, you will watch out.
08:24Watch out for Julian Sand.
08:25Right.
08:26And the only thing I dread is the, CJ, CJ's got to get on his horse and have a really
08:33good year this year because I cannot handle another year of discussion about Ohio State quarterbacks.
08:38No.
08:39You know, being, never drafted an Ohio State quarterback.
08:41No.
08:42Do it for us, CJ.
08:43Do it.
08:44Do it for my sanity.
08:45Do it for the talk radio hosts.
08:46I've been trying to tear down the false narrative of never drafted an Ohio State quarterback.
08:50Yeah.
08:50Please.
08:51Yeah.
08:51Could you please put that to rest this season?
08:53Oh.
08:54All right.
08:55Pain and Pendergast with you.
08:56That was our mock draft injection.
08:57I'd imagine we'll get a new flurry of mock drafts next week.
09:01And we'll see where they've got the, what they've got the Texans doing.
