00:00So, for Osa, you know, it's really interesting.
00:04We talked about this exact scenario yesterday monetarily.
00:09I did not know this is what it was going to be, and there's a couple of different things.
00:13What I want to know, just to start, really basic, really simplistic,
00:16do you like this deal?
00:18Because the Cowboys are trading Osa to the 49ers for a third-round pick,
00:23and it's a third-round pick in this year's draft.
00:25I thought for sure I didn't think we would get a third-round pick.
00:28And if we did get a third-round pick, I thought it would probably be a 2027.
00:33And remember, just kind of draft value logic.
00:36If it's next year, drop the actual value around.
00:41So, like, if it would have been a third-rounder next year,
00:44it really would have been about the equivalent of a fourth-rounder.
00:46That just seems to be how draft pick logic works in the NFL.
00:50But I have seen a lot of pushback on social media that people are upset
00:57and thought we were going to get more for Osa.
01:00More.
01:01Really?
01:01Yeah, which I don't see.
01:03I didn't think you'd get a fourth yesterday.
01:05Let alone a third.
01:07Yeah, yesterday when we were discussing this, I was like,
01:08I'll be happy if I get a fifth.
01:10I really didn't want to trade him for a fifth.
01:12Yeah.
01:12But I'd be happy if that was the price,
01:15because I didn't think you could get a fourth for him.
01:19Now, that being said, I see San Francisco,
01:23I see some of the changes they've made.
01:25I see what they want up front.
01:27And, Kevin, when you ask me about my scouting report on Osa Odeizua,
01:32it is always the same.
01:34That dude plays hard.
01:35For sure.
01:36And in San Francisco, with that electromagnetic field out there,
01:41they're always looking for dudes that are playing hard.
01:44Because, seriously, that is their style.
01:46Play hard.
01:47Now, Kevin, he might go have a successful time in San Francisco
01:50because of the style of play that they have.
01:52That might be something there.
01:54And the fact that across that defensive line,
01:56they just keep bringing dudes in.
01:59That's constant right there.
02:02But what the Cowboys are trying to do right now
02:05is they're trying to get bigger and beefier at those positions.
02:10And, honestly, he's kind of left out
02:14and kind of out of position in this Cowboys current defense.
02:17So it made a lot of sense to acknowledge it and move on.
02:23You said we're saving about $4 million.
02:25Yeah, and so that's another thing.
02:26To get a third, though, I'm sorry,
02:28and we'll get to the number there,
02:30but to get a third is spectacular.
02:33Yeah.
02:34And if you wanted more than that, if you expected more than that,
02:37you probably were overvaluing your own guy.
02:40See, and that's kind of what I think.
02:41But also, you have to remember,
02:42this is the time of year where draft picks are far and away
02:46the most valuable, right?
02:48Like, you've seen that.
02:50But what's going to be more valuable in September and October?
02:54Yeah, the player.
02:55The player, for sure.
02:56But for your team, it depends on what the Cowboys do with that three.
03:01Now, that could be the big difference is, Kevin,
03:04because if you pair that with something else,
03:07can you get a second round if you need to?
03:09Yeah, you can.
03:10If you're sitting there and you're like,
03:11we passed on Jacob Rodriguez,
03:13and we really want Jacob Rodriguez in the second round instead of 20,
03:17like Wolchuk and Brad Sham.
03:20Like, if you really want him in the second round,
03:22you actually have the capital to do that.
03:25Whereas before this whole thing started, Kevin,
03:28the Cowboys actually have some capital to work with
03:30to make some things happen up in the second round
03:33that they didn't have before.
03:34Yeah.
03:35And so this is actually turning into a pretty decent,
03:37you nail this fifth round,
03:39dude, you could be a championship team
03:41if you nail the fifth round.
03:43Yeah, that is for sure.
03:46Always a big if.
03:47So, it's just, it is really interesting to see
03:50how different people feel about this move.
03:54From the 9-0-3, people are crazy.
03:55You're lucky to get a third.
03:57From the 9-4-0, end of the third round,
03:59but it's not a good or a bad move.
04:01You moved Osa because he didn't fit,
04:04but I'm mad he went to a conference rival.
04:06So, the end of the-
04:07I agree.
04:08The end of the third round issue.
04:11So, I mean, the third round goes to pick 100.
04:14So, I get that you're far closer to the end
04:17than the beginning of the round,
04:18but it's not pick 99 or 100.
04:20Like, you are several picks up
04:22from the bottom of the third round.
04:23The other thing is,
04:24you weren't going to pick until 112.
04:25I just accelerated-
04:27Well, not me.
04:27I didn't do anything.
04:28But the Cowboys just accelerated
04:30their ability to pick somebody by 20 picks.
04:33I'm good with that.
04:35Now, for the money thing,
04:36I think Tom Pellicero kind of like
04:38threw some people's notions
04:41of what this was going to do
04:43for you monetarily off
04:44because Tom Pellicero was like,
04:46oh, you clear $16 million in money off that.
04:49No, wrong.
04:50As we went over yesterday,
04:53the Dallas Cowboys will take
04:54a $16 million dead cap hit on this,
04:58which is brutal.
04:59Like, you never want to see that.
05:02What is going to happen, though,
05:03is Osa was set to count $20.75 million
05:07on your cap, all right?
05:09So that means a cap savings
05:10of $4.75 million.
05:12Just for brevity's sake,
05:14let's just say about $5 million, all right?
05:16Just to streamline the process.
05:18So you moved out a player who is,
05:20I think he is a solid player.
05:24Now, there are some numbers out there
05:25that people are using
05:27to try to make it seem like
05:28he's a spectacular player.
05:29I would argue if you watch the games,
05:31very rarely,
05:33did it feel like Osa
05:34was a spectacular player.
05:36It always felt like he's a good player.
05:38I love having him on my team
05:40is what I always thought.
05:41If I had a team full of guys
05:43that played like that.
05:44And everybody seems to think
05:45like as great of a,
05:47or as good of a football player he is,
05:49he's an even better player.
05:50That was one of my favorite lines
05:51from Jesse Holley
05:52when he was like,
05:53Jason Garrett said,
05:53if I had a team full of guys
05:54that played like you,
05:55and you were like,
05:56he was, I was like,
05:56but I'm here.
05:57Yeah.
05:58So like,
05:58we can't take one.
06:00Appreciate it.
06:00One is,
06:00one's too many
06:02and also not enough.
06:03It is confusing.
06:04So you move off of a good player
06:07and for that,
06:08you get a third round pick
06:10and about $5 million
06:11in salary cap relief.
06:14That's honestly
06:15what it boils down to.
06:18And then they made the move
06:19for Solomon Thomas,
06:20which I thought was more
06:21of a salary dump.
06:23You clear off about $2 million,
06:26take a little bit.
06:26I think it's like a $750,000
06:28dead cap hit on that
06:30to move up in the seventh round,
06:33seven slots.
06:33I thought that was more
06:34of a salary dump.
06:35If you want to argue
06:36that you thought Osa
06:37was a salary dump,
06:38I would kind of listen to that
06:40because it does,
06:41you get,
06:41you take the $16 million
06:43dead hit and then nothing.
06:45So going forward,
06:46you're not on the hook
06:48for any more money,
06:49which I think is a positive thing
06:51when it comes to this move.
06:52But then,
06:54my question to you is,
06:57is that money already
06:58accounted for?
06:59I don't think so.
07:00You don't think that's part
07:02of the George Pickens cash?
07:04No, just because, look,
07:06and this is what I was
07:07always worried about.
07:08I mean,
07:08and maybe that is
07:09the way they view it,
07:10but I don't think
07:12it's already accounted for
07:14because they didn't flip
07:16the switch on his contract, right?
07:17We talk about this all the time.
07:19Teams across the NFL
07:20all do this.
07:21The Cowboys do this.
07:22is you have mechanisms
07:23about converting money
07:25over back into a signing bonus
07:27and then you can cut
07:29the cap number
07:29and kick a little bit
07:30down the road.
07:31But the Cowboys
07:32hadn't done that yet.
07:33So theoretically,
07:34I don't necessarily think
07:36that money has to
07:38already be accounted for.
07:40Because that's how
07:41my wife works.
07:42Okay.
07:43If any extra surplus money
07:45comes into our household,
07:46Kevin,
07:47she's already figured out
07:48what it's going to be spent on.
07:50Yeah.
07:50Like this Italy trip.
07:52You think that was
07:52an Italy trip
07:53that I had planned for
07:54in my life?
07:55Right.
07:55She did.
07:56Right.
07:56So she's like,
07:57oh, we got this found?
07:58Nice.
07:59I can finally do this.
08:00So that's what I feel like.
08:02But I'm glad to hear
08:02that the Cowboys accountants
08:03don't think that way.
08:04Yes, that is not the sense
08:06that I get out of this.
08:09But then the question came up,
08:11I think it was Joseph Hoyt,
08:14who I really like his stuff.
08:16This fascinated me.
08:18Is Joseph Hoyt pointed out
08:22that the Cowboys have
08:24seven players remaining
08:26from their 2019 to 2023 drafts,
08:31which would lead you to believe,
08:33especially for a team
08:34that feels like they say
08:35their entire identity
08:36is draft and develop,
08:38draft and develop, right?
08:39That feels really bad.
08:41So I decided to just take
08:43a little bit of a closer look at that.
08:45Go ahead.
08:46Go ahead.
08:46I think the starting point
08:49is a little,
08:51it's not my favorite starting point
08:52because particularly
08:54they picked a starting point
08:55that was always going to be bad
08:56because in 2019,
08:58that's when the Cowboys
09:00didn't pick until the end
09:01of the second round.
09:02They did not have
09:03a first round pick that year.
09:05That is the Tristan Hill year.
09:06So you can make those arguments
09:09that that is bad,
09:10but I feel like you got
09:11a ton of usage
09:12out of Tony Pollard
09:14and Donovan Wilson
09:15until they weren't going
09:16to be particularly useful
09:17for you anymore.
09:192020,
09:21you still have CeeDee Lamb
09:23on the list
09:24and for a long time
09:25felt like we hit
09:27with Trayvon Diggs
09:28and for a while
09:29it felt like you hit
09:30with Tyler Biotish,
09:31but I realize
09:33they're not there anymore.
09:362021,
09:36because that seems to be
09:38the one that's frustrating people.
09:40you now have
09:42no more players
09:44left from the 2021 draft.
09:47Bad draft?
09:49Interesting.
09:51Maybe.
09:51Question mark.
09:52Yeah, okay, maybe.
09:54Or would you argue
09:57you, maybe you could have
09:59foreseen it,
09:59maybe you could not have,
10:00that somebody was going
10:01to be implicated
10:02in a murder
10:03and then eventually
10:04turn state's evidence
10:05and all of that.
10:06And then the other thing is
10:07you didn't lose Micah
10:09and Osa.
10:10You traded them
10:11for two ones
10:12and a three.
10:13Yeah, and Nashawn Wright
10:15didn't work out.
10:16I really wish
10:17he would have here.
10:18You thought Bland
10:19and Diggs
10:20were going to be
10:20your cornerback duo
10:21of the future.
10:22Nashawn Wright
10:22didn't fit into the mix.
10:24He just couldn't
10:24get the playing time.
10:25You miss on a couple
10:27of fourth rounders
10:28and honestly,
10:29you miss on fifth,
10:31sixth,
10:32until Mukwamu.
10:33But he didn't have
10:34a place here either.
10:35So that actually
10:36was a decent draft
10:37in a couple
10:38different areas there.
10:43Kevin,
10:44when I say
10:45that you built
10:47your team
10:48for a defensive coordinator
10:49in that time period
10:51and now
10:53you've switched
10:55defensive coordinators
10:57a couple times
10:57and now you're
10:59That makes it complicated.
10:59Now you're building
11:00for a completely
11:01new defensive scheme
11:03because this wasn't
11:05going to be
11:05what Zimmer's scheme
11:07was.
11:07The personnel
11:08didn't fit that.
11:09Now you're building
11:10for a completely
11:11new defensive coordinator
11:12who insists
11:13if y'all want
11:14to be successful
11:15we're going to have
11:16to shed some
11:17of these things
11:18because they don't
11:18fit what I need
11:19and we're going
11:20to have to add this.
11:22So I'm okay
11:24with that
11:25because Kevin,
11:26I don't know
11:26that the shelf life
11:27of these players
11:27on your team
11:28is 10 years anymore.
11:30Yes
11:31and that is
11:32an interesting point
11:33at a time
11:33when we've talked
11:34about like
11:34the perils
11:35of drafting
11:36a quarterback
11:36number one
11:37overall
11:38because you look
11:38at how that's
11:39gone
11:39like the last
11:4015 years
11:41there's been
11:42definitely some highs
11:43but definitely
11:44some lows
11:45and so
11:45I just hated
11:46the idea
11:47specifically
11:47of 2021
11:50trying to be
11:51used as an
11:52example
11:53that the Cowboys
11:54don't draft well.
11:55Osa would still
11:56be here
11:57if you had
11:58the same
11:58defensive coordinator
11:59but you didn't
12:00and then Micah
12:01would still be here
12:02if the Cowboys
12:03were better
12:04at negotiations
12:05but they aren't
12:06and so
12:07I do agree
12:08that they have
12:10some draft issues
12:11I definitely
12:13agree with that
12:14but then
12:15if you just
12:16keep moving
12:16forward
12:17you look at
12:182022
12:19and it's
12:20Tyler Smith
12:21Sam Williams
12:23Jake Ferguson
12:24Duran Bland
12:25I feel like
12:26you think
12:26you got a hell
12:27of a performance
12:28out of that
12:29now 2023
12:31that's looking
12:32like it could
12:32end up being
12:33being pretty weak
12:34especially if
12:35Overshown
12:36doesn't come through
12:36so I do think
12:37that you have
12:38some drafting
12:40issues
12:41but I would have
12:41to do a study
12:42on all NFL
12:43teams
12:44to determine
12:45like what
12:46their ratio
12:47is comparatively
12:48to that
12:48okay
12:49this draft
12:50you have a chance
12:52to make it good
12:52and that's
12:53and that's
12:53so you're gonna
12:54miss on some
12:54of them too
12:55and that's also
12:56the thing that's
12:56tough is once
12:57again you go
12:57into a draft
12:58thinking we
12:59better hit
12:59or else
13:00our defense
13:01is gonna suck
13:02again
