00:02The Federal Territory's Islamic Religious Department, Jawi, has been instructed to
00:07investigate the use of a banner displaying a translated Quranic verse that was allegedly
00:13misused to promote deviant culture during a recent parade in the capital.
00:19Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Religious Affairs, Dr Zulkifli Hassan, said
00:25Jawi had been directed to take action under the law after the banner, which contained
00:30a mistranslated verse from the Holy Quran, went viral on social media.
00:36In a statement on Thursday, he strongly condemned the act, saying it hurt the feelings of Muslims,
00:42especially during the holy month of Ramadan, and tarnished the sanctity of the Quran as
00:47the verse was interpreted far from its true context and meaning.
00:51He also urged all parties to appreciate the Quran through its long-standing scholarly tradition
00:57and not interpret its verses arbitrarily based on personal desires which could distort their
01:03true meaning, particularly to justify practices that contradict Islamic values.
01:09Earlier, images of the banner circulated widely on social media after it was displayed during
01:16a parade in the capital city, drawing criticism for allegedly distorting the meaning of a Quranic
01:22verse to support a deviant cultural agenda.
