00:31He had guys that would pick on him, said he was playing with dolls.
00:34He faced a lot of opposition, but he just stuck with his dream.
00:38If I could have climbed on the set of Sesame Street, I would have tried.
00:41And I thought, who is creating this?
00:43Hello there, my name is Jim Henson, and I'm a puppeteer.
00:48I wanted to see everything that Jim was doing.
00:50This is who I would like to be.
00:52He jumped from high school right to New York.
00:55Richard Hunt was totally fed up with his character.
00:57and tossed it in Kevin's lap.
00:58What am I going to do with him?
00:59And I said, hello, this is Elmo.
01:01Fine, give it a try.
01:03And then, I got it.
01:04I knew that Elmo should represent love.
01:10I didn't know that this was going to happen with Elmo.
01:12It's an Elmo mask!
01:13It's very difficult to make a piece of fabric react like a human being would.
01:19But Kevin, oh my gosh, he's brilliant.
01:26Everybody wanted Elmo, Elmo, Elmo, Elmo.
01:28I started traveling so much.
01:30I'd be in Japan, China, South Africa.
01:32There needed to be an additional performer.
01:34And Kevin was like, no, I can do it.
01:36That's when I knew that this was bigger than me.
01:42When a puppet is true and good and meaningful,
01:46the soul of the puppeteer that you're seeing.
01:48The thing that people love about Elmo is he needs them.
01:52I attribute that to Kevin because of his embodiment of this character.
01:56He really does exemplify what Jim Henson began with.
01:59Something that touched everyone.
02:01If everybody else your age is doing something very different to what you're doing,
02:04there's always going to be someone saying that you might not succeed,
02:07you might not make any money with that.
02:08All of those things will go away if you really focus on what makes you happy.
