Here’s a clip from The Mind of Sai Marie podcast today! I’m joined by Al Jenkins, the brilliant mind behind Hygge and Homicide, for a conversation that balances the cozy with the captivating.

In this episode, we explore the art of the "cozy mystery," the intentionality of creating atmosphere, and how a sense of comfort can coexist with a page-turning thrill. We dive into Al’s creative process and the secrets to building a world where readers feel right at home—even when there's a body in the parlor.

Listen to the full episode over on my Substack at the link in comments (also available on YouTube, Spotify, and all major podcast platforms).

00:00So the cozy mystery genre is more popular than ever.
00:03How do you keep your investigative voice distinct in such a crowded market?
00:07Yeah, there's so many great cozies out there, and I love reading them.
00:12I'm reading one right now in the Highlands.
00:14I read one that took place on a train in Australia.
00:17And so I think what maybe sets mine apart is this setting, which is a northern Canadian setting,
00:24and also the fact that it is leaning into this Nordic concepts and cultural ideas,
00:30which I haven't seen anywhere else.
00:32It might be out there, and if anyone else finds or has written or read some Scandinavian cozies
00:38or some Nordic cozies, I would love to know about them because I read them too.
00:41But so far, I haven't found them.
00:42So I thought, okay, this is something that's a little different from what other people are doing.
