Seth and Sean look at the moves other teams in the AFC South made yesterday and assess if any of them are a concern.
Transcript
00:00We've not really dug into the AFC South, Seth, as a division.
00:03We've touched on some of the moves.
00:05This move, you and I have not mentioned yet today,
00:07and I think it's one that I was not happy to see
00:10because I wanted this guy long gone from out of the division.
00:13But Alec Pierce coming, I think the sequence of events,
00:16Alec Pierce coming back to the Colts on a four-year, $116 million deal,
00:24and the Colts then trading Michael Pittman to the Steelers,
00:29who give him a new three-year, $59 million deal.
00:35This backs up two things for me.
00:37One, I've always been much more scared of Alec Pierce as an opposing receiver
00:41than I've been Michael Pittman.
00:43I've also thought Michael Pittman has been a little bit overrated,
00:46and that's played out.
00:48He's getting a lower average annual value now
00:51than the big contract the Colts gave him a few years ago.
00:54And Alec Pierce, it's not, for me,
00:56about whether he's one of the best receivers in the NFL or anything,
00:58but he's just been really adept at getting behind the coverage
01:02and having some back-breaking big plays for the Colts against the Texans.
01:07And that's the – I don't know where I would power rank him.
01:10I know he's – is he the highest-paid wide receiver now?
01:13No, not even close.
01:15The highest-paid – there was a certain category.
01:18He's the highest-paid free agent wide receiver.
01:20Highest-paid free agent of this free agent in the class so far.
01:23But, yeah, I – so – but I'm also – somebody's got to throw him the football.
01:28Daniel Jones has an Achilles.
01:29It's – you know, we'll see exactly what becomes of all of that.
01:33Daniel Jones reportedly wanted the Sam Darnold contract.
01:36Three years, $100 million.
01:37Boy, I hope the Colts commit to Daniel Jones for as long as they can commit
01:42to Daniel Jones.
01:43Let's reverse psychology them into it.
01:45I am not a believer.
01:45They have the cojones to pay Daniel Jones.
01:49Let him drop.
01:50Not like Sam Darnold, but like Dak Prescott.
01:53Yeah.
01:54Yeah.
01:54I – so, Alec Pierce, I don't like that.
01:57Trading Michael Pittman, whatever.
01:59I like Pittman to the Steelers because I feel like there's just yet another opportunity
02:03for Michael Pittman to become an unhappy, discontented Steelers wide receiver.
02:11Yes.
02:11Yeah.
02:12And what is the – what's the current word on Aaron Rodgers?
02:15Have we heard anything about him?
02:16No, no, no.
02:17He was on – well, yes, he was on McAfee last week.
02:19Yeah.
02:20And stop me if you've heard this before.
02:21He's going to take his time to make his decision.
02:24Yeah.
02:25Yeah.
02:25Luckily, he and Mike Malarkey have a great and long – yeah, they'll be fine.
02:30Mike McCarthy.
02:31Him too.
02:32Yeah.
02:32Yeah.
02:33Yeah, maybe Malarkey.
02:34Sorry, I was thinking about Gloria Maroney, my college friend.
02:39Okay.
02:39Do we get to that now?
02:40No.
02:42Jaguars – the Jaguars lose ETN to the New Orleans Saints.
02:47Yes.
02:48And immediately Alvin Kamara becomes a topic of conversation.
02:51Right, right, right.
02:52Because, okay, well, they're going to be looking to move on from Alvin Kamara.
02:56You know what?
02:56I mean, this would need to be happy just because it felt like, okay, the Saints are back in
03:01the chat.
03:01The Saints are back in the discussion about –
03:04They're doing a lot of things, man.
03:04They've been in purgatory for a long time, undoing the mess that they created financially,
03:10and it feels like, all right, this is – they're a real NFL franchise again.
03:15Yeah.
03:16Well, what is Tyler Shuck is the big question there.
03:19Yeah.
03:19Like, is he a quarterback that's worth making all these big moves?
03:22They were very active in free agency yesterday.
03:25The Jags are also losing Devin Lloyd, who was very, very good for them last year.
03:30He's going to Carolina.
03:31Carolina signed Jalen Phillips and Devin Lloyd, two guys that are at the top of their
03:37respective positions in this free agency class.
03:40But, yeah, Devin Lloyd was really good for Jacksonville last year.
03:43Yeah.
03:44And they lose him.
03:44They lose their leader on defense.
03:46So, that's good news for the Texans.
03:48The Titans made a boatload of moves yesterday.
03:50They were very, very active.
03:52Yes.
03:53And, like –
03:55None of them scare me.
03:56As much as we'd like to talk about Mitch Trubisky being one of those signings for the
04:01entire segment.
04:02We have to move on.
04:03But John Franklin Myers was the one that caught my eye.
04:06The most – probably the best – one of the best interior defensive linemen available.
04:09Signed a three-year, $63 million deal with $42 million guaranteed.
04:14And that's on a – I mean, that's a team that's already given the Texans a whole lot
04:19of trouble on the interior defensive line.
04:22And they add John Franklin Myers to the mix.
04:24Well, they got rid of Tavondre Sweat, so that helps.
04:27They traded Tavondre Sweat for how much?
04:29What was that deal?
04:31They traded him straight up for Jermaine Johnson.
04:34That's right.
04:35Yeah.
04:35Robert Sala gets one of his guys over there.
04:37Yeah.
04:38So, is LeJarrius – LeJarrius Sneed is still on the Titans, right?
04:44Yeah, he is.
04:45Yeah.
04:46He's still on the Titans.
04:47So, they have LeJarrius Sneed.
04:48And then they spent $15 million and $20 million on two more cornerbacks there.
04:53Yeah.
04:53Well, and, you know, obviously, Robert Sala, defensive-minded head coach.
04:58He's going to bring in his guys.
04:59But they also – they're switching to, you know, a D'Amico Ryan-style defense after being a 3-4.
05:06And so, like, the player-for-player trade, Jermaine Johnson for Tavondre Sweat.
05:10Yeah.
05:10That makes sense because it's a better scheme fit for those guys.
05:13John Franklin Myers, the defensive tackle, is a better in this scheme than he would have been in the Titans'
05:18old scheme.
05:19Yeah.
05:19And I think some of it is just, like, swapping out personnel for the right types of guys.
05:23The funniest –
05:24But Sneed's just been banged up and injured.
05:27He has, but they're paying him a lot of money.
05:28That's my point.
05:29Yeah.
05:29They signed – they've got Sneed under contract.
05:32They traded for him from Kansas City last year and gave him a nice-sized deal.
05:36And now they're out shopping.
05:37And, again, the Titans are one of these teams that have, like, $100 million in cap space.
05:40So, they probably needed to spend just to get to the floor.
05:44But they've already got Sneed on the team.
05:46And they signed Cordell Flott for three years, $45 million.
05:49And Elante Taylor for three years, $60 million.
05:53Yeah.
05:53But I think that's – in rounding out the secondary, they're spending heavily in the secondary.
05:58I think they probably – unless I missed some news about LeJarious Sneed,
06:01I think they're probably expecting him to look more like his old self this year.
06:04Yeah.
06:04Yeah, yeah.
06:06Like, they didn't sign those guys to replace LeJarious Sneed.
06:10They just want to have a better defense.
06:11Yeah, that's my point.
06:12It's like, if they're not going to replace him,
06:13that's three guys that are making more than $15 million at cornerback for you.
06:18That's a lot of money.
06:19And Wandale Robinson getting four years, $78 million.
06:22Can thank Brian Dayball, his old coach with the Giants, who's now the OC in Tennessee.
06:27That's my favorite – my favorite part of free agency is guys who are in different places now
06:32bringing their guys in and getting them super paid.
06:36Wandale Robinson, four years, $78 million.
06:38That was the Texans' version of that when Kubiak came in was Mike Sherman bringing in Amon Green.
06:43I remember.
06:44Yeah.
06:45I remember.
06:45Because Sherman was the co-offensive coordinator, I think, whatever his title was to start off.
06:51So I'm going to the rodeo tonight, going to see Megan Maroney,
06:54and I'm mentioning that for two reasons.
06:55One, we're giving away Parker McCollum tickets here in about four and a half minutes.
06:59Two, I mentioned the mere name of Megan Maroney earlier, and you parted up for some reason.
07:03So Gloria Maroney was a girl I knew in college.
07:07That's not her real name.
07:08Maroney is, but Gloria is not.
07:09I was going to say, I know how old you are.
07:12Gloria, not a super popular name back in the mid-'90s.
07:15Oh, was it not?
07:16Yeah.
07:16Because it was the 198th most popular baby name of 1975.
07:22I looked it up.
07:24Oh, 190th.
07:25Yeah.
07:25Okay.
07:26Okay.
07:26So, yeah, it wasn't completely unpopular.
07:29I stayed corrected.
07:30I wanted to swap her name out but give something.
07:32So Gloria, let's call her Gloria.
07:33Gloria.
07:34Probably from all in the family, Gloria was the name of the daughter, I would guess.
07:38So really cool girl that I was friends with in college.
07:41She didn't go to Cornell, but she went to Ithaca College.
07:44But she hung around in our group of friends and everything.
07:47We got along great.
07:47I would say I got along with her as well as I get along with my current wife, Brandy.
07:52My future wife, I should have said Brandy.
07:55Just, like, a real cool chick.
07:57And we really enjoyed each other's company, platonic friends or whatever.
08:02But one night at a party, we, you know, circumstances found us alone in a room together, and we started
08:08making out.
08:10And it was, like, I would say, like, 30 seconds to one minute into making out.
08:15It was one of those things where it just felt wrong.
08:18It felt like I was kissing my sister or something, and I think she felt the same way.
08:23And I always felt weird about it afterwards.
08:26And we were still cool and everything, but I always felt kind of guilty.
08:28I was like, ah, I hope I wasn't being too forward or something, because it just didn't feel right.
08:33Like, ah, that was, God, I hope she doesn't think I'm a jerk.
08:36And it just, like, I just, because I, and I was the one that pulled away.
08:39I just, it felt awkward.
08:40It just didn't feel right.
08:42And I never, you know, time faded.
08:45I didn't keep up with her or anything after college.
08:46And I was just randomly on Facebook, which I'm hardly ever on Facebook.
08:50So about a year ago, I was on Facebook, and because we have a lot of common friends, she
08:56popped up.
08:57And I was like, oh, Gloria Maroney.
08:58I wonder what she's up to.
09:00And, you know, 30 years later, after me feeling awkward about all of this for so long, it turns
09:06out she does not prefer the company of men.
09:08So I was like, oh, oh, I don't think I'm the one that drove her to this.
09:14I think that was something she already knew, but wasn't open about it at the time.
09:16Are you sure?
09:18Yeah, I don't know.
09:19No, like, looking at the experience, I think that's 100% what it was.
09:23And I'm glad that it was, I'm just glad that I was, like, present enough in the moment
09:27to realize that, ah, something about this isn't right.
09:29That sucks, and you had to carry that around for 30 years, though, thinking, you know, like,
09:33just, you know, that you were awkward, you know, you felt awkward about it.
09:36Kind of awkward for me, as opposed to her, who had to hide whatever her true identity
09:39was for however many years.
09:40I'm not saying it wasn't awkward for her, but you're the one I'm hosting a show with
09:43right now.
09:44Yeah, yeah, yeah.
09:44You're who I feel for in this.
09:45That's it.
09:46I felt better.
09:46I was like, oh, okay, cool.
09:47Good for her.
09:48And good for me.
09:49Yeah.
09:50Everybody's happy.
09:52Who turns down the old Sethers?
09:56Gloria Maroney, but not for the reasons we thought.
09:58Not because there was anything inherently wrong with me.
10:01No, no, not at all.
10:02If you don't like men, surely the manliest man that you've ever come across isn't going
10:07to do it for you.
10:08No, that's right.
10:08That's right.
10:10The manliest of men, Seth C. Payne.
