Ken McKusick is a little worried about the Maxx Crosby trade and not just because of the capital that Eric DeCosta had to give up to acquire him.

00:00alluded to it let's talk about john simpson often flagged right that's one of the issues i think
00:05and you just put a flag in his pocket so they can just pull it out next time he holds
00:09somebody but
00:10um your thoughts overall like do you feel like that's an upgrade um it's it's a it's a small
00:16upgrade it's uh he's had one one flag every 104.2 snaps per career that's unbelievably high number
00:22it was but it was one every 95.5 when he left here last time uh so it's gotten a
00:27little bit better
00:27uh he's here for three years 30 million i don't know exactly how that's structured so we'll see
00:32over the course of the next day or two in the next maybe week or so but i expected something
00:36like 22
00:37years over the first 22 million over the first two with an eight million dollar option for that third
00:41year uh so they have an opportunity to get out of it um simpson has played a hundred percent
00:46effectively of his snaps at left guard for his career that's not quite true he's had 76 snaps
00:51at other positions and out of about five or six thousand in in his career so it appears he'll
00:56take that spot if you're paying for that vorhees now is replaced so we're not we haven't even talked
01:01about fallele's replacement and but it appears that emery jones and vorhees might be competing for
01:06that right guard spot and then i think if you're looking for another downstream implication i think
01:10this is a possibility so it's uh you know an interesting idea at least is that vorhees could move
01:16to center um now right now it looks like cory bullock probably has the inside track in in 2026 because
01:22you know he played pretty well he's a bigger guy he he in a lot of ways is different from
01:27linderbaum
01:28in terms of what he could potentially bring as a pass blocker um but anyway i i we'll see how
01:33this
01:33works out it's not a great draft for centers and we'll see if as we go through this if the
01:38ravens can pick somebody up in a later round where they find value out of uh um you know so
01:42that other
01:43teams can't see we didn't talk about odarius washington um another giant not the new york
01:49giant one of one of my favorite ravens you know i love the underdog stories and i think he added
01:54a lot
01:55um i'm sure it's you know it's it's going to be viewed as just a death piece but how big
01:59a loss is
02:00he i think it's a pretty big flexibility loss and he's one of the guys i was kind of counting
02:04on
02:04the ravens having back at a reasonable price and now he's gone to the giants no doubt at a reasonable
02:09price and that's that's quite unfortunate so uh he's a he's a player who moved to safety in 24
02:15after they got rid of marcus williams and edie jackson they weren't performing they moved uh him
02:20and kyle hamilton to the back end and they really solidified the defense again in 24 in 25 he missed
02:25most of the season but when he came back and and it was way earlier than expected um playing playing
02:30his heart out and and he's playing at a pretty high level and i would have thought that they would
02:35have you know made what attempt they could to get him back for this year but that's
02:38part of the issue and part of the reason why i think bishotti encouraged harbaugh to take a year
02:44off from the job was that he realized he was going to lose a lot of players and coaches to
02:50um uh to a
02:51harbaugh defection okay and can i just hop on that for a second yes you know and that's what's happening
02:58but you know again the the conversation at least in the street here was you know how unpopular harbaugh
03:04was how they were disliked the players that then how do we explain this i i think i think it's
03:10largely complete bs that's manufactured by by honestly it's it's the twitter space which does
03:17a lot of it you know there's the toxicity allows people okay the way i like to like to describe
03:22it
03:22is if you put up a microphone in the middle of time square and you put a hung a sign
03:28on that said is
03:28life fair it's not going to be your typical wall street winner who's going to go to that microphone
03:33and talk about what's going on it's somebody else who's gonna he's got a who's got a gripe and so
03:39that's that's who gets on you know who you know yells loudest on twitter and then that that's you
03:44know is part of the toxicity as my foot post was 42nd and 7th in time square that's exactly what
03:49happens
03:51i got a big picture question for ken not about a specific player they lost or something but
03:56obviously the last few months have produced a coaching change which was big news in baltimore
04:01after all those years of harbaugh and this trade unprecedented giving up two first round picks
04:06so eric da costa is doing business very differently than we're used to seeing what's your confidence
04:12level in da costa and his staff bashodi the whole gang to win operating this way very differently than
04:21we're used to seeing for years that is a fantastic question i'll say that um i really think that uh
04:28da costa i have complete faith in in terms of his ability to find talent in the draft i think
04:33this is
04:33such a departure i'm concerned about it on two levels one is i'm concerned about it because i don't
04:37necessarily think it's the right move although you know scale of one to 100 i'm probably a 37 on this
04:43trade had somebody on the pot with me is a 23 but i'm not a 59 or a 65 it's
04:47a huge risk to take and so
04:49it'll have to play out if it plays out positively it'll probably work out like derrick henry did
04:53where it's a it's a lot more positive than i even thought it could be um so that that's positive
04:58here's
04:59here's what i'm i really hope has not happened i don't believe it has but i really hope it has
05:03not
05:03happened they just had the jupiter meeting so they so they were down there right before the crosby trade
05:09and so it it's possible that bishotti's hand is in this and i i would i really hope he's not
05:17taking
05:18more of a of a um hands-on approach to any kind of player personnel decisions that we've seen really
05:24backfire on other organizations most notably the cowboys but but other organizations too whenever
05:29the owner gets involved it's usually a bad thing particularly when your gm is good but the owner like
05:34in baseball owners always have to sign off on the big deals they that doesn't mean they they
05:39originated them right but you don't make it before the owner says okay i'm with you on that
05:43it has his tacit approval at a minimum i agree the question is did it have an active approval right
05:49and
05:49we don't know if the cost that went to bishotti and bishai said okay i agree with this or he
05:54maybe
05:55went to eric and said we need to do something bold here i guess we're waiting we don't know and
05:59but
05:59the problem was those meetings were going on right before the deal was made right and ken one last
06:05thing for you because i know we've gone over a ton of stuff here but um with everything that's
06:09happened yesterday knowing what's coming up wednesday the moves they've made what's your biggest concern
06:13moving forward right now whether it's position or is it uh is it something else like if you're looking
06:19at financially what they can go out and get is there do you think there's still enough in free agency
06:23to fill some of their holes yeah they're gonna have to look at the middle and low end of
06:28the market in a lot of positions safety they need a couple different safeties now on this team that
06:33they got to go out and get and they should be able to find value because they always have as
06:36an
06:36organization um the defensive line they need a player the offensive line they're going to have
06:40to try and try and find value from a a mid-range free agent and possibly also uh two draft
06:46picks it's
06:46either one and one or two and oh um there in terms of the draft and and others but they
06:50you know
06:51they have multiple holes still to field and they figure out how their inside linebacker situation is
06:55working out with teddy buchanan you know starting the season maybe not playing they said he's gonna
06:59be back for camp yeah they said he should be ready for camp now let me do this we got
07:03one caller i got
07:04it trippy uh wants to ask you a question trippy hello what's up man hey what's going on with y
07:10'all
07:10hey trippy how you doing hey what's going on quick question right man because i see even fast they
07:16on put a question out about john simpson he's a better upgrade than andrew right so now i mean of
07:22course
07:22we got a warehouse center but i believe in court but like we can get the dude from packers right
07:27and also um raven fans gotta stop tripping out man like we're gonna pay them all that money and you
07:33we know how these bottom teams they'll be desperate so they gotta pay extra money for these kids right
07:37but i'm happy for my guys yeah i don't know i might have to go to a couple giants games
07:41or something
07:42in dc go see a couple of my guys but hey man y'all have a good day man thanks
07:46trippy hey trippy
07:46appreciate your call buddy um one of the things that happens with great organizations organizations
07:52that draft well have to go through this process every fourth year after a great draft and they
07:57have to make heartbreaking decisions to let players go that they would want to keep and it's like
08:03sand flowing through your fingers in terms of the value you have to let go but it it has to
08:09happen
08:09and the alternative is you're the arizona cardinals or you're the new york giants you draft like crap
08:14and you end up having to buy other people's players at a premium price and that's exactly
08:19what's happening right now with a lot of other teams so while this is bad well it's real bad
08:23that all this talent is going out the door i think the the ravens actually manage this talent well in
08:27terms of drafting it getting the most out of it and then also making sure that they're leaving at at
08:31a
08:31very high salary mark to to propagate further comp picks can tell everybody about the website
08:36filmstudybaltimore.com and where they can find you appreciate you thank you i'm at filmstudy
08:40ravens on twitter uh the the website is filmstudybaltimore.com we got two great podcasts
