Cordell Woodland is tired of waiting for the "draft and develop" strategy, especially with Lamar Jackson in his prime, and wants to see Eric DeCosta and the Ravens swing for the fences and go get Maxx Crosby!
Transcript
00:00But joining us now from Fresh Tank Sports, he's our friend, he's our colleague, part of our family, part of
00:06your family.
00:08So on the Window Nation guest hotline, let's welcome back to the show Cordell Woodland.
00:12Cordell, first of all, good morning.
00:15Hey, good morning, guys. How's it going?
00:16All right. Let's start with the Orioles first.
00:18And, you know, you wake up and, you know, you figure everything's cool injury-wise.
00:22And then Kittredge has the shoulder inflammation.
00:24He's probably going to miss opening day, which means he's going to start the year on the IEL.
00:29And we've talked, Cordell, a thousand times about what the Orioles need to do to solidify the team.
00:34And still trying to get that bullpen situated was one of them.
00:38Now they lose a key piece.
00:40So what's all Mike Elias going to do to, you know, rectify that problem?
00:44Or maybe are they comfortable with some of the in-house options, at least for now?
00:48It's only March 4th.
00:50Yeah, I mean, I think it's obviously a big blow.
00:54You know, Kittredge was brought back to be kind of one of the focal points of a bullpen.
00:59And that they had to spend a lot of this offseason trying to piece back together.
01:03And he was one of those guys that you thought would be one of the reliable pieces that you wouldn't
01:09have to worry about.
01:10So, yeah, it does shuffle the cards a little bit.
01:13I am curious to see how it impacts them going into the start of the season and how long he'll
01:18even be out.
01:18We don't even know that just yet.
01:20But you never really like to hear about shoulder problems with pitchers.
01:26It is going to be a blow.
01:29I'm curious to see who steps up.
01:31Tyler Wells is a guy that comes to mind when you talk about some of those middle relief arms.
01:36He'll be a guy that I think is going to kind of make his home in the bullpen as the
01:41season goes on.
01:42So, maybe it won't be as big of a blow going forward.
01:45But, again, I think it really depends on how long he'll be out.
01:48All right, Cordell.
01:50Monday, legal tampering.
01:52All the deals will be done on Monday.
01:54Who gets done Sunday night by midnight for the Ravens?
01:59What deals get done?
02:00Does a Lindenbaum deal get done?
02:02Does a Stout deal get done?
02:04Who gets done?
02:07I still believe Stout gets a deal at some point.
02:12I don't think they want to go back into the market of having to deal with finding a punter and
02:17all that type of stuff.
02:18I think they want to keep that, especially, you know, going into next year with Loop and wanting to keep
02:26as much familiarity around him as possible, I would imagine.
02:30Stout is a part of that orchestration.
02:33So, I mean, look, he had a really good year.
02:35His best year as a pro to this point.
02:37So, I think he'd be one that's probably one of the easier ones to get done.
02:42Maybe Kohler is another one that potentially gets done.
02:47I'm curious to see how they go about that one.
02:49Other than that, I don't really see them spending a lot of money to keep a lot of their pending
02:57free agents.
02:58Tyler Lindenbaum, obviously, they want to.
03:01But I just don't get the sense.
03:02Like, if it wasn't about him getting more than what they're offering, he would have signed already.
03:09So, the fact that we're still here leaves me to believe that he is fully prepared to test the market.
03:17And I think that the market is going to take him away.
03:21It's going to wash him away.
03:23You let an offensive lineman, especially at that age, and he's entering his prime into the open market.
03:29Teams are going to throw money at him that the Ravens aren't going to do right now.
03:33So, I think he's as good as gone.
03:36So, yeah, I don't really see them doing any other deals outside of possibly the Stout and maybe Kohler.
03:42The only thing with Stout, Cordell, like, if you're Stout's agent and he's just been at the Combine, whoever Stout's
03:49agent is,
03:50and Chris Horton, Harbs, you know, and the Giants punter kind of stinks, you know.
03:57So, I think if you were the agent, you know, Harbs and them have probably, and Chris Horton has probably
04:03already touched base with him and say,
04:05hey, you know, don't sign.
04:08So, I could see, you know, one where he's going to get paid more than they thought he was two
04:17months ago.
04:19No doubt.
04:20I mean, I couldn't agree more.
04:23I could definitely see that happening.
04:24I mean, they have so much competition for their own players now.
04:28Maybe competition for certain guys that they wouldn't have competition for under usual circumstances.
04:34But when you have Harbs and so many guys with their coaching staff go to these different places,
04:41you're going to have to fight them off to keep some of your own guys.
04:46So, yeah, you know, it does create a market that maybe wouldn't have been there had you not moved on
04:51from Harbs.
04:52So, yeah, it will be interesting.
04:53And, look, Stout had a really good year.
04:56I mean, he will warrant some looks from some people.
05:00So, I don't know how far you should be prepared to go to keep him.
05:06But I would imagine they want to keep him.
05:08You know, I think they want to keep him.
05:09But I just don't know how far they're willing to go to make sure that that happens.
05:13Now, Cordell, we'll give you a scenario.
05:16We talked about it earlier.
05:19If you could get Crosby for one and a three, you know, and trade for him or go get Hendrickson
05:29and then you could still keep your 14th pick and go get people, what would you prefer to do?
05:39Uh, I'm probably going to get Crosby, to be honest with you.
05:43I'm all for swinging for the fences.
05:45Let's get crazy.
05:48If it's all about getting to the Super Bowl and, you know, getting over the hump,
05:54you've already made drastic changes to your organization moving on from Harbs,
05:58and I didn't have a problem with that.
06:00There's been all these rumblings about Crosby.
06:03Everybody wants Crosby.
06:04Go get him then.
06:05Go get him.
06:06Pay the tab.
06:07You're not getting a premier player for nothing.
06:10And look, let's be honest.
06:12I mean, their first round picks haven't always been hits.
06:17I think the thing about Crosby, I'm all for getting the short thing.
06:21I'm all for getting the short thing.
06:23And they've been trying to fix their pass rush for a while now.
06:27I think Crosby is a known commodity.
06:30I think you know exactly what you're getting out of this guy.
06:33I think you know the impact that he's going to make on your defense.
06:37You can't tell me that getting Max Crosby doesn't elevate their defense.
06:42And look, Trey Henderson could too, but probably not to the level that Max Crosby is.
06:48I know Trey Henderson led the league in sacks a couple of years ago.
06:52I'm a guy that you miss a year in the league.
06:56That means a lot to me.
06:58And he wasn't able to get back to that production issue.
07:02He's missed a lot of time.
07:03He's dealt with injuries.
07:04Crosby has dealt with some injuries too.
07:06But I believe in Max Crosby more than I do Trey Henderson at this stage in his career.
07:10Where draft picks, I'm not a guy that feels like you have to keep all your picks.
07:18Like if you can get an elite player for elite draft capital, it's a win-win for me.
07:24So yeah, I would make the trade for Max Crosby and I wouldn't lose.
07:27No sleep over it.
07:29No, Cordell.
07:30All right.
07:30Let's say at pick 14, what would you prefer that they take at 14 if they go that route?
07:38Yeah, I'm still best player available.
07:41I'm always going to be best player available in the first round.
07:45We've seen teams try to draft for need.
07:47And the problem is, in the case of the Ravens, when your needs, I guess outside of pass rusher,
07:53when your needs aren't the elite positions, and I don't mean to make it out to seem like
08:01offensive line isn't important.
08:03It obviously is.
08:04We've seen the Super Bowl winners.
08:06As we understand they're built from the inside out, you have to build up in the trenches if
08:11you're going to win.
08:11I stand by that.
08:12But individually, position-wise, I'm not just reaching for a guard because I need one.
08:20I'm not just drafting a center at 14 because I need one.
08:25So I'm going to get whatever guy that I feel like is highest on my board at that time that
08:31I feel like can be an instant impact to my team.
08:33And I really don't care what position that is, to be honest with you.
08:37If you're a team like the Ravens, you want to make sure whoever you add is somebody that
08:43you can plug and start right away.
08:45That's really all I care about.
08:47So if it's receiver, make sure that that's somebody that can come and elevate your offense
08:51right away.
08:52If it's a pass rusher, somebody that you don't have to slow walk and hold their hand and
08:58only give them 5% of the snaps to start the season, no, put them out there.
09:02Somebody that you're ready to play right away.
09:04That's really all I care about.
09:06Make sure you go get an impact guy at 14.
09:09I mean, last time they were at 14, they drafted Kyle Hamilton.
09:11That worked out pretty well.
09:13And they didn't necessarily need a safety, so we thought, at that time.
09:17So I'm all for going and getting the guy that you feel like is the best on the board.
09:22Yeah, that was a pick that was criticized by a lot of people.
09:25Kyle Hamilton back at 14.
09:27Cordell, when's the next Fresh Take Sports?
09:30We'll be back tomorrow night.
09:32We're back to our 6-8 time slot, so that'll be cool.
09:36So we'll talk a lot about, obviously, spring training, what's going on down there.
09:41You talked about Kittredge.
09:42We got Alonzo already showing the leadership yesterday.
09:46That was cool to see.
09:48And we'll start to get prepared for the start of the new league year,
09:52try to start brainstorming on some pending Ravens off-season moves as well.
09:56And you can explain to us how we can show up at one winning drive once a month
10:00when there's nothing going on out there.
10:02He's Cordell Woodley.
10:03Fresh Take Sports Cordell.
10:05We appreciate the time, as always.
10:06And we'll catch up with you soon.
10:08That's right.
10:09We won't even get in the gate.
