The Ravens made the biggest swing Monday with the acquisition of Maxx Crosby, but they also lost a ton of talent to free agency. So what is next for Eric DeCosta and Jesse Minter as they replenish the roster?
Transcript
00:00I saw John Simpson and Crosby kind of lacrosse talking a little bit on social media
00:04because they were teammates with the Raiders.
00:09This is another one where, like, you start looking at it and you feel good,
00:12and then, oh, they lost him, oh, they lost him,
00:14and then all of a sudden you start looking at the numbers going,
00:18man, we did lose a lot of players yesterday.
00:21And just to recap, Isaiah Likely to the Giants,
00:25Charlie Kohler went to the Chargers, Linderbaum to the Raiders,
00:28Draymond Jones, was that Patriots?
00:30Yeah, Patriots.
00:32Ardarius Washington to the Giants, Eloy Gilman's gone,
00:35Jordan Stout to the Giants,
00:36and then they didn't tender running back Keaton Mitchell.
00:38So I think that's where we're getting the eight players, Joe,
00:41because Keaton Mitchell didn't.
00:42Ah, there you go.
00:44So it doesn't mean that Keaton Mitchell won't come back.
00:46They just didn't tender him where he was,
00:48but usually that means that guy's leaving.
00:51Look, looking at the list, the Linderbaum thing hurts the most,
00:55but there is no way on God's green earth you can pay him what he got
00:59if you're the Ravens.
01:00The Ravens literally made him a market-setting offer.
01:04What was it, five years, $20 million?
01:06Because the next best center is making like $17 million a year on average.
01:10He blew away that market with what he got,
01:12and I just think it's absolutely insane to look at some of these numbers.
01:17Here you go.
01:17Linderbaum reached an agreement with the Raiders who are awarding him
01:20a three-year, $81 million deal that includes $60 million guaranteed,
01:26making him the highest-paid interior offensive lineman in NFL history.
01:30I just don't know how you give that type of money.
01:32Now, the Raiders had more money to spend than just about anyone, right?
01:35And when you get Max Crosby off the books as well,
01:37that's going to help you free up some cap space.
01:40But if he had any idea he was about to get that,
01:43you couldn't go after it.
01:45So how long can you sign this legal tampering day comes
01:50and all heck breaks loose?
01:52But a week from now, you can still sign these guys who are out there.
01:56Well, Wednesday, they all get announced.
01:57It's just a couple of days of tampering where, like, it's so silly.
02:01I just think it's a way to kind of drum up interest the days before,
02:05before you're actually announcing it.
02:06Because on Wednesday, when they start announcing everything,
02:09it's going to feel like everything's coming back out of you.
02:11My point is, it feels like a deadline, which apparently it's not.
02:15But it also, to me, benefits the players.
02:18Because it feels like Team A is like, well, wait,
02:22is $60 million going to get this done?
02:23I hear a rumor the Patriots are in it.
02:25And now this team's here.
02:26And then, oh, yeah, I'll give them five more.
02:29Wait, give them eight more.
02:30And the next thing you know, you get to $81 million.
02:33And this keeps happening.
02:35And the Ravens had an 8-9 record.
02:37They didn't make the playoffs.
02:38They had a disappointing year.
02:41But half their rosters making a lot of money now spread out all over the league.
02:45So in 24 hours, we went from the high of the Max Crosby acquisition to this now.
02:52And it feels like a low.
02:53And there's still a lot of work to do.
02:55And I think the Ravens fans were hoping, get Linderbaum, get one key piece, get a Lamar deal done, add
03:03Crosby.
03:04Now you've got a few more pieces you've got to add.
03:06Let's go to work.
03:07But now there's more work to do.
03:09Yeah, I think that's kind of how fans felt once Crosby got traded.
03:14It's like, well, the Lamar deal has to be done.
03:16And now they've freed up money.
03:17They can pay Linderbaum.
03:18I don't think you can be the least bit mad at the Ravens when you see what Linderbaum got.
03:22You can't give them that.
03:23And then people go back, this is the other thing that pisses me off about this.
03:26Fans go back and go, well, they could have had him for $24 million had you just franchise or had
03:31you picked up his fifth-year option.
03:32And it's like, yeah, I get that.
03:34But that's $24 million on your book for one year.
03:37If you sign him to a deal, you get to finagle the salary cap to fit it a little bit
03:42better.
03:42And they didn't know that they were going to get Max Crosby at that point.
03:45They didn't know what Lamar Jackson's restructure was going to look like.
03:49So I can't fault them for any of this stuff with Tyler Linderbaum, but there's people that are trying to
03:54run with it saying, oh, yeah, you lost him.
03:56You guys missed out.
03:57You should have done this.
03:58Having $25 million on the books for this year when your quarterback was due to get $70-some million and
04:02you're trying to figure that out, it just wasn't going to work.
04:05Now, with the deal that they offered him $100 million for five years and they were going to get his
04:11guaranteed money, that was a market-setting deal.
04:14He even got more of a market-setting deal with the Raiders.
04:19So the interesting thing, too, is when you look at people that leave your organization, head coach, whatever, assistants going
04:26elsewhere, a lot of people like to talk about the Chargers being Ravens West because Harbaugh being there and then
04:31Greg Roman and a bunch of former players went out there.
04:34Harbaugh ends up taking three players from the Ravens, Jordan Stout, Ardarius Washington, and Isaiah Likely.
04:40And you and I were talking about it.
04:42When you look at the money Likely got, I don't know how, like, I'd like to know what went on
04:48behind the scenes when there was supposed to support.
04:50It's about the same contract Mark Andrews got.
04:52Basically, yeah.
04:53I mean, depending on how you look at it, maybe a little less money here.
04:56The Ravens fans would say Likely's the better player of the two.
04:58Better athlete.
04:59Younger, has a better future.
05:00Yeah.
05:01So why not just give him that contract?
05:02But as you said, during the break, well, he wanted to see what all the teams would offer him.
05:07That's what it sounded like.
05:08The Ravens were saying that they, from some of the people I talked to, whether these are true rumors or
05:13not, like, that there were offers there and then kind of scoffed at it.
05:17Maybe he thought he was going to get more money.
05:18Maybe he wanted to, you know, like, some guys just like to be wined and dined a little bit, right?
05:22It's kind of nice when people are trying to bring you in.
05:26But again, like.
05:26Listen, trying to decide between $50 million and $40 million.
05:29Well, either way, you're not going to need lunch money.
05:32Yeah, who just said that?
05:33Josh Allen just said it when they were talking about him taking a little less money.
05:36And he goes, look, what's the difference in, you know, this number?
05:40And it was like, well, it's $5 million, but okay, that's the difference technically.
05:43Right.
05:44But he's like, I'm living a comfortable life.
05:45I'm going to be good the rest of my life.
05:47I'd rather have this.
05:48And I wish we heard more players express that sentiment.
05:52I bet they, on the inside, they feel that.
05:54But like in baseball, I know this.
05:56If you express that sentiment, the players union would be giving you a call that day saying,
06:00hey, buddy, what are you doing here?
06:01And that's exactly what happens with this situation.
06:04Because I think he even got calls from the players union.
06:06They don't want you taking less.
06:07Because like, the thing I always say when we sit here and argue over this player is not going to
06:12be,
06:13you know, he's not going to give the hometown discount or he's not going to do this or that.
06:16Like, when you argue about millionaires and billionaires going at it, that money's never coming back to us.
06:22I'd rather see the players get it than the owners, personally.
06:26But it's all a matter of what you're worth and what the market says you're worth.
06:28And with the situation and what we saw with the Ravens, felt like there were a lot of good players.
06:34And I think a lot of them got what you might deem overpaid, but good for them.
06:38Like, Charlie Kohler is one of the best blocking tight ends in the league.
06:41He goes out to the Chargers who need, you know, they want to run double tight end sets.
06:45I just wonder what the Ravens are going to run this year.
06:46I fully expect them to either pick up a tight end in free agency or draft two.
06:52Now you've got to draft some safeties, right?
06:54You don't have any safeties on the roster.
06:55You've got Kyle Hamilton.
06:57Offensive line, to me, is still the most concerning area of the team.
07:02Wouldn't you say?
07:02Yes, yeah, of course.
07:03I mean, you're figuring out the offensive line, and now you've got to figure out center.
07:06But Malachi Starks, I didn't mean to dismiss him.
07:08They lost two safeties yesterday.
07:09But, yeah, like, you're looking at all that.
07:11And the thing that caught me off guard, too, with this, Steve, is you made the trade for Gilman with
07:16the Chargers.
07:17He comes here.
07:18He ends up leaving and signing elsewhere.
07:20You traded Owe, who we were going, yeah, I can't figure it out here.
07:23He goes there and gets eight sacks, including, what, three in the playoffs, I think?
07:28Or was it more than eight?
07:29He had big numbers.
07:30And then now the commanders pay him four years, $100 million.
07:35Man.
07:36It only takes one man to like you.
07:38Yep.
07:39But, and said there was more than one that likes some of these guys.
07:42But is the silver lining here now, the Linderbaum money is going to go elsewhere and they can do some
07:49good?
07:49Yeah, I think so.
07:51But, again, like, fans are going, what else is out?
07:52There's plenty out there.
07:53There's plenty of good players.
07:54There are also players that are going to get cut.
07:57There's some guys that are post-June 1st.
08:00And you'll hear all this.
08:01Somebody will sign somebody and go, oh, we don't need this anymore.
08:03I think that literally happened with, was it the Raiders or another team signed a center and it's like, see
08:09you later to this guy.
08:10So, I mean, it's about hitting that market.
08:13And as we've said before, the Ravens love street free agents.
08:17That means guys that have been released because it doesn't affect your comp picks.
08:20Like, for example, yesterday when the Ravens lost, who was the first person they lost yesterday?
08:28It doesn't matter.
08:28Let's just say likely.
08:29And they're like, oh, you're going to get this pick for it.
08:32But then you go ahead and sign John Simpson and it's like, well, that pick's washed out in the compensatory
08:37picks.
08:37The Ravens, I think they've maxed out already in what they can get in compensatory picks just with everything that's.
08:43Well, they got four.
08:43That's the most you can get.
08:45And so did Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
08:47Those are the three teams that maxed out on the comp picks, giving them 10 total.
08:51But they don't have a pick until number 45.
08:53That's their first pick as of this minute.
08:55Yeah, I mean, it's just been kind of crazy.
08:58So much action yesterday.
09:00Let's grab Mike in Baltimore real quick.
09:02Mike, you're on the fan.
09:03What's up, man?
09:03Hey, how y'all doing this morning?
09:05Good.
09:05You just wake up?
09:07Yeah.
09:08Man, I wasn't anticipating I was getting raided like that, man.
09:12I knew Lindenbauer and Lively was gone, but I didn't really think of Kohler and Washington and Stout.
09:21I mean, we lost some good people, man.
09:25You know what, Mike?
09:26This should tell you how much talent was on this damn team and why they failed so much with Harbaugh
09:31at the helm.
09:32Like, this team had so much talent the past three years and haven't got to a Super Bowl.
09:37It's just, ugh.
09:38And the Simpson deal, I mean, he was ordinary when he was here.
09:42So, we still got a lot of work to do.
09:46The problem with John Simpson is the past two years, he's been one of the most flagged offensive linemen in
09:52the league.
09:53Yeah, that's not exactly a great line on the resume for him.
09:57He's a road grader in run blocking.
09:59If you lost your center, you want to have strength at guard.
10:02Yeah.
10:02Yeah.
10:02Yeah.
10:02Yeah.
10:03Yeah.
