00:01A 32-year-old salesman who only wanted to be known as Chong lost over 15,000 ringgit after falling
00:09victim to an online loan scam recently.
00:12Chong had applied for a 30,000 ringgit loan via a website claiming to offer money-lending services to help
00:19expand his online business.
00:20He was instructed to submit documents, open a new bank account and make multiple payments, supposedly to meet Bank Negara
00:29requirements.
00:30Trusting the scheme, Chong made eight payments totalling 15,480 ringgit to several local bank accounts between March 2nd and
00:38March 5th.
00:39He was assured the payments would be refunded along with the 30,000 ringgit loan.
00:45Three days later, Chong noticed a cheque transaction of 53,240 ringgit credited to his account,
00:53but the funds remained as a non-withdrawable, floating transaction.
00:58The same day, Chong applied for another 1,000 ringgit loan but cancelled it hours later after growing suspicious.
01:06HMS said, I have been able to use 1,000 ringgit loan but I have to pay $500.
01:10I had to pay for $500 for a while since I saw that I didn't pay!
01:14I was able to pay my money-lending money-lending business
01:20and I obviously paid my credit card, it was straight to my bank account.
01:27So I used to pay a loan for a $500,000.

01:41he's still there

01:47He said that he can't
01:48and then he said to me
02:06He added that the loan shark even visited his friend's house
02:10to take photographs as intimidation.
02:13Chong filed two police reports and returned RM100 to the scammer,
02:17but his total losses amounted to RM15,480.
02:22He reported the case to the MCA Public Services and Complaints Department on Tuesday.
02:27The department's head, Datuk Sri Michael Chong,
02:31warned the public to beware of online loan scammers who prey on unsuspecting victims.
02:37You have to only help yourself by avoiding all these things.
02:42You want to take loan, you want to take one,
02:44please go to the bank, go to the finance institution,
02:47or even go to the licensed money lender.
02:50Also present at the press conference were three families
02:53who publicly disowned a family member who had borrowed from loan sharks
02:57and had gone into hiding to escape repayment.
