00:00A desperate attempt to pay his workers has left a Johor contractor trapped in a spiralling
00:06nightmare of debt and threats. After borrowing nearly 400,000 ringgit from more than 20 loan
00:13sharks, he has ended up over 600,000 ringgit poorer, and the blackmail continues.
00:19At a press conference on Friday, MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head
00:24Datuk Sri Michael Chong said the 44-year-old contractor, identified only as Chia, turned
00:31to illegal lenders after delays in payment from the main contractor left him scrambling
00:36to cover salaries. Despite borrowing close to 400,000 ringgit, Chia received only about
00:43200,000 ringgit in hand.
00:54A police report was filed on Friday, and the case is being investigated under Sections
01:07383 and 384 of the Penal Code for Extortion and Section 506 for Criminal Intimidation.
01:14So whoever commits the extortion shall be punished with imprisonment for a term may extend
01:21to 10 years, or with fight, or with weeping, or with any two of the punishment. This one
01:27is extortion. Number two is the criminal intimidation. So the one is under Section 506. So whoever commits
01:37the offence of criminal intimidation shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which
01:42may be extend to two years, or with fight, or with both.
01:46Chong warned that loan sharks increasingly use psychological tactics to pressure victims.
01:51I want to let the public know, all this they put in the Facebook, all these are innocent
01:57victims, the family member, got nothing to do with the loan. But they use this to let the
02:06family suffer, lost their job, and put a lot of children. The children go to school, but
02:11they're sick. They use all this distress to get the extortion money. They extort the money,
02:19using this tactic. Please, have sympathy on all this.
02:23He also urged the public never to turn to loan sharks in desperation, noting that fund recovery
02:35is nearly impossible. Last year, in all 130 cases handled by his department, not a single
02:41victim recovered any money.
02:53So, I'm not afraid of mortality he could get the abuse.
