A 46-year-old e-hailing driver is being harassed by loan sharks after borrowing money to meet the demands of an online boyfriend, even going so far as to throw severed chicken heads into her home.

MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong said, his team handled 422 loan shark cases last year, involving a total of RM44mil.

00:00A 46-year-old woman who took loans from moneylenders to appease her online boyfriend
00:06is now distressed that they even have access to her personal and financial details.
00:12Speaking at a press conference organized by MCA Public Services and Complaints Department Head
00:17Datuk Sri Michael Chong on Thursday, the e-hailing driver, identified only as Go,
00:23said the loan sharks had screenshots of her earnings from her company
00:26and even photos and information about her immediate family.
00:30Go, who has lodged a police report with South Klang police,
00:34said she was shocked when the moneylenders called and warned her just moments after she stepped out of the station.
00:40Her nightmare began when she befriended a man online,
00:43which led her to borrow 3,000 ringgit from loan sharks late last year to meet his demands.
00:49The debt quickly ballooned to 6,200 ringgit with interest and fines added.
00:55The loan sharks have also targeted her mother,
00:57even throwing several severed chicken heads into her home as a warning.
01:02Go said she fears for the safety of her 21-year-old daughter and other family members.
01:07This was not her first encounter with online scammers.
01:10In July 2024, she fell into a similar trap after taking a Facebook acquaintance's loan,
01:18accumulating more than 12,000 ringgit in debt.
01:21She lost 30,000 ringgit of her personal savings to the online suitor,
01:26but with the help of Chong's department, managed to settle her debts with the moneylenders.
01:31Chong said his department handled 422 cases involving loans from moneylenders last year.
01:37Last year, the total cases we received is 422.
01:45422 cases we received involving about 44 million ringgit last year.
01:53And regrettable to say that involving 1,333,000 ringgit.
02:01Chong noted that despite repeated warnings about the dangers of borrowing from loan sharks,
02:06many continue to take the risk.
