The Queensland city of Bundaberg is in the grip of an emergency as the Burnett River reaches a major flood level. Close to 300 homes are at risk of inundation when the river peaks sometime later tonight.

00:08They have been warned that they need to leave immediately.

00:15Cars submerged as locals make last-minute preparations,
00:19with the north set to be cut off for several days.
00:22When the 2010 flood hit, this house actually went under.
00:27We've been through it a few times, and if there's anything under the house,
00:32you're sort of prepared to lose that.
00:34We can just get a car and drive, but where are we going to put the chook?
00:38As the community waits out the overnight peak, there's some relief.
00:41The water won't reach the height of the 2010 floods,
00:44but authorities say there'll still be heartbreaking consequences
00:48if the water reaches 7.5 metres, as businesses on the south side brace for impact.
00:54Fridges and freezers emptied, trying to save perishable goods.
00:59We've just cleared out everything out of every single shed, shop, freezer.
01:04The peak in both Gaindra and Mundubra was just below impacting homes,
01:09which was really a blessing for that community.
01:12That won't be the case here in Bundaberg.
01:15Upstream, the region's troubled Paradise Dam,
01:18which had its capacity lowered and walls reinforced to make it safe,
01:22faces its first test.
01:24It's currently at double its capacity.
01:27There's no issues with the structure of the dam.
01:29It is, from all the information we've got, it is safe at the moment.
01:32The threat has passed for Gaindra and Mundubra,
01:35with locals grateful it wasn't worse.
