After waiting for days, an outback town is finally seeing floodwaters arrive – with a peak yet to come. Longreach is on alert for what could be its biggest flood in 26 years. Homes on low lying land have been sandbagged, and an evacuation centre is now open.

00:02The heart of outback Queensland.
00:05I haven't actually ever seen it like this before.
00:08Water that's travelled more than 100 kilometres
00:10down the Thompson River after significant rainfall a week ago.
00:15The last big flood here was in the year 2000.
00:19It kind of went under our house but not in it.
00:21But we've raised the house since then.
00:24And I think the river come up a lot quicker then.
00:26The Bureau says this one is expected to fall just short of that record
00:30at possibly 6.7 metres.
00:33There's some modelling that indicates certainly yards
00:36and also into floorboards of low-lying residences.
00:40The evacuation centre has been opened earlier.
00:43A rare stream of traffic today
00:45as locals checked out the vast amount of water.
00:49It'll be wonderful for everything in the long run
00:51but in the short term of course lots of damage
00:53and some worry for people especially in town as well.
00:55So a lot of town is fine
00:57but some parts of town are a bit low-lying and starting to get concerned.
01:00The Landsborough Highway behind me
01:02was still being built during the 2000 flood
01:05and has remained dry since.
01:07Authorities are closing the road tonight
01:09as it will likely be underwater by tomorrow.
01:11So we have to be able to check the people's home
01:11on Friday as well.
01:11And we're going to work on the shore.
01:13We'll be able to find our community
