Karsch and Anderson react live to the Lions signing of center Cade Mays.
Transcript
00:01breaking news according to aaron wilson and then corroborated by nolan bianchi uh aaron wilson
00:08covers the nfl and the texans uh for the houston you used to work the houston chronicle
00:15cade mays the center to the detroit lions on a three-year deal for 25 million dollars 14 million
00:25guaranteed okay um so there you go it took uh it took 90 minutes into free agency but they went
00:34out and they got one of the better centers available on the market it is an upgrade over
00:40what graham glasgow tried to do a year ago when they took him from the guard spot and put him
00:45at
00:45center where he played a little bit in his career but cade mays is 26 years old he's got great
00:52size
00:52he did a great job in pass protection everything i've read about cade mays says this guy is really
00:59good and the knock against him is maybe he's not as great in space maybe he's not as great in
01:06getting
01:07out in front of the screen game or something like that but the lions now have done a couple of
01:12things
01:12one is they've signed the veteran center and the center position is likely to be better than it was
01:18a year ago two is uh they have gone out and they have alleviated any pressure of moving what is
01:26likely their best guard to center in tate ratledge now you've got the other guard spot between the
01:33recently acquired juice scruggs you've got last year's back your draft pick of miles frazier and
01:38you got uh christian mahogany who came in the draft two years ago to battle it out at the other
01:43guard spot
01:44and um somebody's gonna have to back up tate ratledge but uh this here is a solid signing
01:52for not that much money scott so cade mays a member of the detroit lions yeah i'm breathing a sigh
02:00relief it's a good one uh nfl.com had him list is the 36th rated uh free agent really so
02:07did the
02:07athletic 36 there's some consistency there you say big yeah six six for a center that's big six six
02:15and 325 pounds um it's good it's i think it's really good news i love the contract it doesn't
02:21seem like it's it's that much at all when you're looking at eight million dollars a year for a
02:25starting center in this league you have him for three years uh with only 14 million guaranteed at
02:31this point okay great so now as we start to remake this offensive line looks like you've got your
02:38center your right guard in ratledge and right now it's your right tackle and panace sewell who may
02:44switch over to the left side depending on what happens what they decide to do at the other tackle
02:48position does tackle come in through free agency or is it gonna are they gonna wait to the draft to
02:54to address that i imagine they're gonna sign somebody in free agency as a tackle i don't know if
02:59it'll be a starting one or a one for depth and then you look at the left guard position there's
03:04competition for that for that starting job already in house before you even get to um whether it's free
03:11agency or the draft and there are certainly options they have i feel better now than i did a couple
03:16hours ago knowing that they've got their center so they have eight million dollars a year for three
03:22years i wonder what linderbaum is gonna get well and are we gonna go oh i i don't know um
03:28but what
03:29else this does is when the restructures come if if uh justin rogers math is right they still got
03:37plenty of money here they should in theory so i wonder what else they are working on they've got
03:44the center locked up but what are they working on lions fans how you feel about this two four eight
03:50five three nine 97 97 this is not a player that is top in the league it is position but
03:58what's
03:58important here is he's better than what they had there last year it is improvement and he's still a
04:04guy that's kind of young in his career so hopefully overall this offensive line and now did they identify
04:12him was he the first guy that they wanted is he was he the number one guy on their list
04:20his his strength
04:21is past protection and you know the there was a lot of pressure that came up the middle last year
04:28on jared golf justin rogers uh tweeted out tate ratledge is on his honeymoon pumping his fist in
04:33the air at the may signing right let's can now stick it right guard yep two four eight five three
04:39nine 97 97 big news there detroit lions fans your thoughts and now we identified this as the number
04:46one need they got their guy and um we'll see what's next feels like they still have a lot of
04:54flexibility
04:54here and they didn't wait and shop from the bargain basement two four eight five three nine 97 97
05:03stefan in clarkston you're on 97 one what's up stefan hey guys good afternoon what's up the show thank
05:09you hey so champ and chump um my champ really uh is the actual landenborg you know it had to
05:15be i watched
05:15a lot of the michigan basketball games and towards the beginning of the year and even in the middle i
05:19thought
05:19to myself god it just looks like he i don't know if he's coast if he coasts to games or
05:23i just
05:24didn't really see it but my my gosh when now you know when the time is coming crunch time is
05:29coming
05:29he's really stepping up into a really solid dependable player and a score um and smart too
05:36um my my chump is tom iso i i mean i i i'm a michigan fan but i love tom
05:42iso i've loved tom iso i
05:44used to coach um and i and you know somebody that i used to read about and look up to
05:49he's always been a
05:50a favorite coach of mine i just can't believe the words coming out of his mouth
05:55with jeremy fears or even uh even get it you know going at the the fans um about the you
06:00know nobody
06:01would have known that the fans were chanting that i watched the game i didn't even i maybe i heard
06:05it
06:05at the end well stephan let me say this about let me say this about iso is it possible do
06:10you think
06:10that what he said after the game was meant to take all of the heat off of his players and
06:16put it
06:16squarely on his shoulders no i i do agree with you but when it when he comes and basically says
06:22jeremy fears is this way because of media um um prosecution by media or um you guys all label
06:30him this and it's one-sided and he was pushed in the back things happen what is what things getting
06:36kicked in the underneath the belt that's what happened but i'm saying that i think by him coming
06:41out and saying what he did which i think some of it is like indefensible but you're going to say
06:45you're going to say it i think it's done for a reason i think it's done to take the heat
06:49off of
06:49his players and put it squarely on his shoulders so that they can get back to ko he doesn't care
06:56tom can take it he's going to get his team ready to play on friday night or friday whenever it
07:01is
07:01that they're going to friday at nine yeah when they're going to play in the uh in the dumb tournament
07:05and then get ready for next week's big tournament which is what matters well look they're about to play
07:13some very important games i would imagine it's a high priority to make sure that fears doesn't do
07:17anything like that again i would think it would be easy to not kick somebody there in the course of
07:26a
07:26basketball game and fix it and move on but and then as far as addressing what the fans say i
07:33mean
07:33the problem with that no matter how strong you feel about it it's not like your words are going to
07:40make it stop in fact acknowledging it all is going to make it worse two four eight five three nine
07:4697 97 mark is in detroit and he's on 97 one hi mark hey how you doing guys unless i'm
07:53just being i'm
07:54you know i don't sugar cold stuff i'm just a realist they offensive line the center play was pathetic
08:00i'm talking about pathetic just flat out i love the signing they he's not a big money free agent but
08:07he's
08:07if he's better in pass protection that's what they need because that's where all that's where
08:11all the pressure mainly came from up the up the middle they was on golf head last year
08:17this guy's supposed to be great in pass protection i think he allowed one sack last year
08:24and pretty good and had a huge win rate in in pass protection you know it's gonna it's gonna create
08:30a better pocket for jared golf to step up into look at this they restructured uh saint brown
08:35they're gonna have to restructure golf they open up some more money i think they tried to get max
08:41cosby but what i think what held it up i heard that when uh arnold got in trouble they that
08:47that stopped
08:48because they're gonna i think they're gonna go out and get a top i think they're gonna go out and
08:52get
08:52another corner well they're gonna have to yeah yeah and i and i think and i think these tackles that's
08:59out here right now and right that you look you're gonna have to move for day to left i mean
09:03that's
09:04just common sense he's getting paid like a left tackle so he you might as well move him to left
09:09you drive the you drive the right tackle and you drive the veteran to come in and back up the
09:16young
09:16right tackle that's what you do and then you address some other needs by running back you i think they
09:22get a running back in the draft probably and there's some guys i'm a big emmett johnson fan out
09:27of nebraska scott you like the two backs at penn state and the two backs in indiana um cate mates
09:35correction allowed zero sacks last year and only 13 pressures that's pretty good yep yeah that's uh
09:43i'm i'm i'm satisfied with that signing with that one now it's on to the next one yep but uh
09:50be nice to
09:51know that they've restructured some deals so that they can really go out and and do it right you
09:55did it too i we can't stop calling them signings they are nobody signs till wednesday agreements are
10:01made and the lions got cade mays they've lost alex anzalone to tampa and amik robertson to washington
10:07but they get and and a center addressing one of their biggest needs 248-539-9797 it's karshen anderson
10:1597-1
10:1697-1
