00:00A developing story in legal tampering as it is now kicked off right here on 105.3 The Fan, your
00:05home for legal tampering.
00:08We would never do illegal things here at The Fan.
00:10Kevin, Ian Rappaport is Rappaporting, as you like to say.
00:14Yeah.
00:16The San Francisco 49ers are now said to be open to trading. Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams.
00:24Are they?
00:24A resolution has not been easy, and Williams is frustrated with the process. He's due.
00:30$32 million in salary with a $38 million-plus cap number, Kevin, according to Ian Rappaport.
00:39Here's, before we get to any of your numbers, which I know those are significant, Alec.
00:43Kevin and I are going to play a quick game.
00:45I am somebody interested. I'm in the Cowboys organization.
00:49Okay.
00:50I am interested in pursuing Trent Williams.
00:53Okay.
00:54And I'm calling my cap people. You are my cap people.
00:57Got it.
00:58Ring, ring, ring.
01:00Hello.
01:01Cap person.
01:02I would like to get Trent Williams. How much is that going to be?
01:06Nope.
01:07What's the number that we're...
01:09Nope.
01:09I want Trent Williams, though.
01:11Nope.
01:11Are you sure there's no money available?
01:13Why do you keep saying no?
01:16That's right.
01:16Okay.
01:17So, Trent Williams, a big no from the Cowboys because we're planning on spending $30 to $38 million on a
01:24left tackle in this free agency as you're trying to build the rest of your team?
01:28I do not think so.
01:30And to Corey's point, we checked.
01:33Yeah.
01:33So, when you hear the report that the Cowboys checked in on Trent Williams, we just recreated that for you.
01:38Now, the reason why he says $30 to $38 million is because I tried to play a positive role in
01:44the break, right?
01:45Yeah.
01:45Kevin was like, hold on, Corey.
01:46I may have found a little scenario here.
01:49And I looked at it and I was like...
01:50Save you some money.
01:51I was like, I hear what Rappaport's saying, but the 49ers are going to have to eat that signing bonus.
01:56So, that drives the price down to $30 million.
01:59Yeah.
01:59There you go.
02:00So, Alec, do you think anything has changed?
02:02If I pick up the phone now that I know it's $30 million and I call cat people, do you
02:08think that they're going to change their tune?
02:10You know, I like where your head's at, but no.
02:13Okay.
02:13Well, let's find out.
02:14Do you want to do another phone call?
02:15You know what?
02:15Ring, ring, ring.
02:16Hey, can you check in on this?
02:17Still no.
02:18Goodbye.
02:19All right.
02:20So, the legal tampering period has now begun and things are going to start getting...
02:25Wheels are going to start being in motion.
02:26That being said, though, would you just run the ball to the left side every time?
02:31Do this right now.
02:32You've got Trent Williams.
02:33Stop this.
02:33You've got Tyler Smith.
02:35Would you just run to the left every single time?
02:38Trent Williams...
02:39I mean, I can't afford it.
02:41But if I could...
02:4237 years old.
02:44He's still awesome, though.
02:46And last year, only started 16 games.
02:50All right?
02:52That's...
02:52What?
02:53The year before, only 10.
02:55All right?
02:56That's fair.
02:56But he consistently starts about 14 games for you.
02:5914 to 15, 16 games for you.
03:02Every year, over and over, he is sturdy, and he is still a Pro Bowl All-Pro.
03:07Yes!
03:08Let's go to the Alec Medford News Desk.
03:10Whoa!
03:11That would be different.
03:12We're going to keep it with the name Alec.
03:14Alec Pierce is returning to the Colts on a $116 million deal across four years.
03:23Oh, this is bad.
03:25This is very, very bad.
03:29Now, is this dumb on the part of the Colts, or is it the Cowboys should have gone ahead
03:34and set the market with Pickens, because now this looks like this number will be a little
03:40wild for George Pickens down the road?
03:43This is not good.
03:46And that's $29 million per year.
03:52What did we think the market going in for him was?
03:54$25?
03:55$22, yeah.
03:56Okay, $25?
03:56$25 max was where I was.
03:59He's getting...
03:59But I kept hearing $30 million in that range, and I kind of thought it was laughable.
04:04So, let's just take a look at it, because you know how the market works.
04:09Signing happens.
04:10People act accordingly.
04:12George Pickens is better than Alec Pierce.
04:16Perhaps definitively better than Alec Pierce.
04:19Yay or nay?
04:20Yes, definitively.
04:22All right, so the guy that you're definitively better than just got $29 million per year.
04:29Which, I mean, it does set the tone for, like, you're going to make $30 million no matter
04:36what.
04:37Pickens is going to make $30 million.
04:38You're going to make more.
04:39But now how much far more than that?
04:43And, Kevin, this number, because this was very similar to what happened with Miles Garrett
04:47last year.
04:48He set the number so big because he's the best.
04:51Yeah.
04:52And then Micah said, I want more than that.
04:54And the number got very skewed, and it was like, hold on, is that really what the market
05:00says you're worth?
05:01Well, the market says that Pickens is a, what, $33, $35 million receiver compared to Alec
05:06Pierce?
05:06Yep.
05:07Working their way to $40 million, like Florio said.
05:10Like, that's what...
05:11Again, if I'm the agent, that's what I'm asking for?
05:13Hold on.
05:14This Alec Pierce kid just got this much.
05:16Sure.
05:17Micah client's definitely worth $40 million.
05:19You know what's kind of interesting about that, because we've heard rumblings this morning
05:23too, that the Daniel Jones camp was a big old fat pass on what they offered, and he
05:29might be looking for somewhere in the neighborhood of $50 million per year.
05:33And so, like, first of all, I think that's laughable.
05:36But then again, I would not have thought that Alec Pierce would get $29 million per, and
05:42so...
05:43It's interesting that that's the first, like, big move.
05:47This is a significant move.
05:48A lot of people might be asking, Alec Pierce, we've been talking about him for a while, he's...
05:53He was the top free agent wide receiver.
05:55Yeah.
05:55Because George Pickens is under the tag, so technically not a free agent.
05:59He was the top free agent wide receiver, and he just got $29 million per year.
06:03If I'm George Pickens' representatives, don't you come in and you say, all right, look,
06:08man, I want four for $140 million.
06:10I want to see what that guaranteed money is, because obviously that can change things.
06:15But I absolutely, four for $140 million, I would think, would be a viable number for
06:21Pickens, and CeeDee Lamb's already come out and said he doesn't mind if Pickens makes
06:26more money.
06:26And I want to go back to this one more time.
06:28You have the guaranteed money on that.
06:29Oh, how much?
06:30So $84 million in guarantees, $60 million fully guaranteed at signing, according to Rappaport.
06:36All right.
06:36So that's not an absolute disaster for the Cowboys.
06:41I'm trying to see what percentage that is of the overall money.
06:47So he got essentially 72.4% guaranteed.
06:51So if you, so, all right, George Pickens' deal, as I'm estimating it right now, four years,
07:02$140 million with $100 million guaranteed.
07:06That's my guesstimate, based off of the Alec Pierce number.
07:10And somebody from the 443, Pierce is getting $29 million.
07:14Why is that a problem for us?
07:16George was always going to get between $30 million and $35 million.
07:19Because I don't think $30 million is in the picture anymore.
07:21That's why I think it's an issue.
07:25So if Alec Pierce would have come in at $23 million, $25 million, oh yeah, George Pickens,
07:30he's better than that.
07:31Hell, let's give him $30 million, $32 million, whatever.
07:33Alec Pierce comes in at $29 million, I feel like $30 million isn't even a discussion point
07:38anymore.
07:38Like, I don't think you can reasonably go to George Pickens and say $4 million for $120 million
07:43anymore.
07:44Because I think you will get scoffed at.
07:46And so I think that just puts you at least on the high end of that.
07:52And that's just a bad thing if you want to, obviously, save money.
07:56Or, maybe another team comes in and they're like, ooh, man, that makes that George Pickens
08:04deal a lot more palatable to us if he's willing to sign.
08:08And I don't know.
08:09I still don't think you're ever going to get two firsts for him.
08:12But I think that price just went up.
08:15You're going to pay some significant amount of money to him.
08:17And you probably were going to anyway.
08:19You were.
08:19And now the decision is, are we going to really fight over $2, $3 million?
08:25Sure.
08:25Or is the agent going to say, no, we're fighting over $7, $9 million?
08:30Yeah.
08:30And that's your concern, right?
08:31Is that you say $33 million and he says $40 million.
08:34Yeah.
08:34And then the discussion is, well, how do we close that gap?
08:37Yeah.
08:37And then you start looking at the Mike Evans of the world and say, well, that closed the
08:41gap for us because the number for him is going to be far smaller.
08:44Yeah.
08:44Far less significant in shorter years.
08:46Now, you still have the rights to Pickens and you don't want to necessarily play that
08:50game because that's going to be a pain in the butt.
08:52Agreed.
08:53But you would love to say, we have Pickens available to us.
08:56We did a deal for, let's say it's $33 million.
08:59You don't have a thumbs up on $33 million for George Pickens.
09:02Right now.
09:03Right now.
09:04And this is kind of what we discussed last week.
09:06How will Pierce and Pickens affect each other?
09:10And we just see it right here.
09:11This is exactly the scenario we were putting out last week of which one will affect it the
09:17most and which one is going to be least affected to the Cowboys.
09:20If they go ahead and do something now, they get to set the market.
09:24But they waited and so the market changes.
09:27Yeah.
09:27I mean, because if you're George Pickens' group and you're sitting there, and let's
09:31use your numbers.
09:32The deal was four for $132 million.
09:35Oh, well.
09:36Maybe you got to talk about it.
09:37You see Pierce come in and now you're like, all right, tell him no.
09:42Tell him no, no, no, no, no.
09:45So that's something.
09:47By the way, people continue to ask this.
09:49We'll go ahead and throw it out there one more time with some specifics.
09:51And then hopefully we can move on from this idea.
09:54The issue of trading OSA.
09:56I think Alec broke it down well earlier.
09:59But the other part of it is you're just one year into his deal.
10:03That makes it you're always going to carry.
10:06The theory is the further you get into the deal, obviously, the less dead money you should
10:11have.
10:11Now, there are some restructures that can kind of mess that up.
10:13But that's the essential rule of thumb.
10:15Right now, OSA carries a dead money hit of about $33 million.
10:19Now, you could probably do some work on that.
10:21But, Corey, like if I told you in a vacuum, no numbers involved, you get OSA, you trade
10:27OSA for a second round pick.
10:28Well, yeah.
10:29Okay.
10:30Maybe.
10:30But then I told you also you have to eat $33 million on your cap.
10:34Oh, thank you.
10:34Yeah.
10:34Well, if you're the Cowboys now, you're like, well, that's stupid.
10:37I want two first.
10:38And every other team's like, not my fault you gave him that deal.
10:41And so I think therein lies the essential issue with the idea of trading OSA today.
10:47If you traded him in a year, I think that's a much more viable conversation.
10:51But right now, it's just too much.
10:54From the 901, the Gary deal will be the biggest defensive moves the Cowboys make.
10:59That would be disappointing.
11:00That would be extremely disappointing.
11:02And at the moment, it's the first deal that they've made.
11:06It kind of looks like that Jadavion Clowney is left on the outside in that conversation.
11:11But I don't, Kevin, I think it's a move.
11:14But I think that the draft moves that they make defensively could be bigger than this by far.
11:20Make a far bigger impact.
11:21Again, in this legal tampering period right now, there are three names that we'd love to
11:27see happen all in order.
11:30And Jalen Thompson, Jane, was just pointing out on NFL Network that that's still one of
11:35those that you need to keep an eye out for.
11:37She's a total.
11:38N'Kobe Dean, also one of the names that you need to keep an eye out for.
11:42And our dream, our pipe dream is Devin Lloyd.
11:44Cowboys, I think, are currently looking at it and saying, we still have to fix our linebacker
11:49position no matter what, because it was weak sauce last year.
11:51Yeah.
11:52And then when it comes to your safety position, you're losing Donovan Wilson.
11:55You can't just say, we're going to go draft one and make that happen.
11:58You have to fill the position right now so that you at least have some bodies, just in
12:03case your draft doesn't fall the way that you want it to.
12:05Adding a Jalen Thompson, I think, would probably be, it would be that order for me.
12:10Jalen Thompson, N'Kobe Dean, then Rashawn Gary in those top three for me at the moment.
12:15Ooh, okay.
12:16All right, interesting.
12:17Now, a couple of deals that happened right before the free agency period opened up.
12:22Conor McGovern, four years, $52 million with the Bills.
12:27Khalil Mack, one year, $18 million fully guaranteed with the Chargers.
12:32And then the Eagles, who are in the midst of maybe doing several fascinating things,
12:37three years, $78 million extension with the Eagles and Jordan Davis.
12:42But I wanted to go back to the Tua thing.
12:44I had not thought about it like this whatsoever, but a couple of different spots pointed out
12:50that they gave Tua the extension, right, while he still had his fifth-year rookie option,
12:59which means with all the dead money they're going to eat, they essentially paid Tua $123 million
13:07for one extra year.
13:09Okay.
13:09At least when it comes to their cap hit, they ended up essentially doing a one-year, $123 million extension
13:16because of the $99 million in dead money they're going to eat, though they are going to post June 1st.
13:23And in case you missed that discussion from earlier, it essentially gives you the opportunity
13:27to break that in two.
13:28It's not always exactly half down the middle, but more or less the opportunity to break it in two.
13:34And the Raiders did sign a three-year, $30 million deal with Eric Stokes.
13:39So there are things that are cruising right now.
13:42We are in cruise control.
13:44And there's going to be some deals today that you're going to, like, I don't care.
13:48So let me ask you this.
13:49I know, I don't know that he, here's the only gamble with Pickens,
13:55is that he says, I'm not playing on the franchise tag.
13:59Yep.
13:59That's the gamble.
14:00But if you got him for $27.6 while Alec Pierce played for $29.
14:05Yeah.
14:06Is that the way the Cowboys think right now is, hey, hold on, we're getting a deal.
14:10This is a steal of a deal.
14:12How much hardball would you want to play?
14:14Because you could just sit there and be like, yes, you will.
14:17You could say you won't, but guess what?
14:18If you don't, it carries over until next year and the next year,
14:22and then eventually your career is going to be over.
14:24You really want that.
14:25And then George Pickens' team can come back and be like, I'll show up halfway through the season
14:30when I'm mandatory required.
14:31Or, man, my hamstring's been kind of bothering me as of late.
14:36Hope that doesn't pop up again during the season.
14:39You better have a backup plan.
14:40And I have no doubt that those kind of discussions, not just with the Cowboys,
14:44but with teams everywhere, have happened again and again over the history of the franchise tag.
14:49Can I totally rule that out?
14:51That happened just this last year with the Bengals?
14:53No.
14:53No, I can't.
14:54So, look, it's a game of chicken that either one could win, but don't you see them both losing?
14:59Oh, yeah.
15:00Like, George Pickens, if he waits until July, guess what's happened with all the other Cowboys players like that?
15:04They've gotten off to a slow start.
15:06So, George Pickens, is he going to get off to a slow start?
15:09Is that going to affect his money?
15:10For the Cowboys, if you make a whole bunch of defensive moves,
15:13and your offense starts to sputter a little bit because you screwed around with one of your top offensive players,
15:19that's a lose-lose situation.
15:20But it feels like a good day for George Pickens, and the price probably went up.
