Rich House Poor House S12E04
Transcript
00:00:00In Britain, the top 10% own over half the country's wealth.
00:00:06I have nice cars, I own a couple of race horses.
00:00:09It feels nice to have money.
00:00:12But while the rich are getting richer...
00:00:14It's a very profitable business that turns over well over £10 million a year.
00:00:18The poor are getting poorer.
00:00:21It's tough.
00:00:22Hit hard by relentless price rises.
00:00:24A lot of posh people think poor people just sit on their bums all day on benefits.
00:00:29Once we've spent on food, we don't really have anything left over.
00:00:33I had bailiffs come in.
00:00:36Might be on its way out.
00:00:38Now, two families are swapping homes.
00:00:42That is very different.
00:00:43Yes.
00:00:44How many windows does a house need?
00:00:46How many doors?
00:00:48Budgets.
00:00:48Right, this is going to get serious.
00:00:51Oh, God.
00:00:53And lives.
00:00:54It's our bloody work.
00:00:55It was way more challenging than I thought it would be.
00:00:59Champagne!
00:01:00I'm in heaven.
00:01:01To find out if money really does buy happiness.
00:01:06I love to have a walk in order.
00:01:08Oh, my goodness!
00:01:11Never been in a limo in the last.
00:01:14Or do people matter most?
00:01:16This is the nicest family time that us three have had together in years.
00:01:21And when they finally meet...
00:01:23Hello!
00:01:25...lives are changed forever.
00:01:27We'd like to gift you a van.
00:01:31We want to back your vision to a value of £100,000.
00:01:35Oh, my God!
00:01:35It's going to change everything for the better.
00:01:43The village of Hockley in Essex is home to trainee teacher Becky,
00:01:48single mum to nine-year-old Amy.
00:01:50Amy is a very sociable child.
00:01:53She loves singing, dancing, acting.
00:01:56However she can be in the spotlight is her happy place.
00:02:00I love spending time with mummy because we always find fun things to do,
00:02:05even if we don't have any money to spend.
00:02:08They live in a small terraced house with a cramped kitchen,
00:02:13tiny lounge diner, two beds and one bathroom.
00:02:17And the garden's in need of some serious TLC.
00:02:21That swing is too old, too broken.
00:02:25Oh, God.
00:02:26There's wobbly steps, there's plants everywhere.
00:02:30It's just not safe.
00:02:31I'd like to start planting maybe some apples.
00:02:35Maybe.
00:02:36If we do get a climbing frame, we can have so much fun.
00:02:40That would be really good, wouldn't it?
00:02:42Becky's trainee wages means there's no money for improvements,
00:02:46so they make a daily trek to the local park,
00:02:48joined by Nanny Bev.
00:02:51My mum is absolutely critical to running our lives.
00:02:56She takes Amy to school,
00:02:58so she doesn't have to go to breakfast club every day.
00:03:01She'll babysit when I need help.
00:03:03We're just a team, and it's just girl power, isn't it?
00:03:09Whee!
00:03:121,500 miles away in Alicante on Spain's Costa Blanca,
00:03:16another Essex native lives a very different life.
00:03:21Guys, people ask me what keeps me motivated,
00:03:24and the truth is I have something burning inside of me
00:03:27that refuses to settle for anything less
00:03:30than extraordinary lifestyle.
00:03:34Millionaire estate agent Adam left Romford 15 years ago
00:03:38and is living the expat dream with his son Jamie.
00:03:42Best friends, really, isn't it?
00:03:43Yeah, we've been best friends since you could walk, really, I think.
00:03:46Yeah.
00:03:47Hey.
00:03:47We're both.
00:03:51Adam's girlfriend, Ebba, runs an online lifestyle channel.
00:03:56So I would describe Adam as very positive,
00:03:59also very ambitious,
00:04:01and super caring about the people around him.
00:04:04Adam is one of 76,000 Brits
00:04:07drawn to the Alicante region
00:04:09by the promise of a luxury Mediterranean lifestyle.
00:04:13So one of the best things about this house
00:04:16is that we have this outdoor area here
00:04:18where we spend the weekends coming out here, relaxing.
00:04:22It's clear from Adam's £2 million home
00:04:25on the exclusive Las Colinas Golf Resort
00:04:28that money isn't a problem.
00:04:30With four luxury bedrooms and three bathrooms,
00:04:34even Jamie has his own en-suite.
00:04:38Are you tidying up?
00:04:40That's not too bad, actually.
00:04:41For a smelly teenage boy room, it's not bad.
00:04:46This is a state-of-the-art smart house
00:04:49with everything from lights to air-cons centrally controlled.
00:04:53And the money-no-object lifestyle doesn't stop there.
00:04:59So the Lamborghini cost me €150,000,
00:05:03but it's good fun, so I think it's worth it.
00:05:10Adam started making big money
00:05:12when he set up his Alicante estate agency in 2017.
00:05:16Today we're at a €1.7 million villa
00:05:20here on Las Colinas Golf and Country Club.
00:05:23Now he's branched out into digital marketing and more.
00:05:27I have three different businesses,
00:05:29estate agency, law firm, and a tech company.
00:05:32My dad's done so well for himself.
00:05:34I do look up to him quite a bit, yeah.
00:05:38In Essex, Becky makes just over the minimum wage
00:05:42working with children unsuited to mainstream education.
00:05:45I genuinely love my job.
00:05:47My work is my true passion in life.
00:05:50I do come back and I've had some proper bruises.
00:05:54Caring doesn't pay the bills and a £950 monthly mortgage
00:05:59leaves only £128 a week for everything from travel to clothes and food.
00:06:05I meal plan very specifically.
00:06:09I also use apps where I can pick up free food or heavily discounted food.
00:06:14It's really mentally draining thinking about money all the time.
00:06:18She's had to get credit cards out to just Treadwater, really.
00:06:24Amy steps in to help Mum run the house for a small fee.
00:06:29Right, so what jobs do you think you've done
00:06:31from your pocket money list this week, Amy?
00:06:34Pitting my clothes away, 50p.
00:06:36Tearing up the living room, 50p.
00:06:39And we have hooves off sweep, 50p.
00:06:43Amy's had to grow up fast.
00:06:45When she was three years old, Becky was diagnosed with cancer.
00:06:50I had chemotherapy, radiotherapy, a double mastectomy and reconstruction
00:06:56and I've been on hormone treatments ever since.
00:07:00As a parent, you just have to kind of put your big girl knickers on
00:07:04and get on with it.
00:07:08In Alicante, Adam might be living the high life
00:07:11but as a teenager growing up in Essex,
00:07:14he knew what it was like to be super poor.
00:07:17My girlfriend got pregnant when I was 16
00:07:19so I had to call my mum and say,
00:07:22Mum, I need your help, I don't know what to do.
00:07:25Jamie was born in the Romford flat Adam shared with his mum,
00:07:29girlfriend and twin sisters.
00:07:31Living in a one-bedroom apartment together was hard.
00:07:34I can remember now like condensation like down the inside of the windows.
00:07:39It was cold, it was just not a nice place.
00:07:44I used to wash lorries
00:07:46and I would go and deliver leaflets for an estate agency
00:07:48and that's when I got the offer to become an estate agent
00:07:52and that's when my career started.
00:07:54So why does a wealthy ex-par want to swap back
00:07:58to the other side of the wealth divide?
00:08:00Now I feel it's time to give back.
00:08:02So somebody that turns up and they want to do well for themselves
00:08:05and they have the get up and go
00:08:06and they're trying to have that positive attitude,
00:08:09that's somebody that I will see that I could help.
00:08:11Adam also wants Jamie to learn the value of money
00:08:14by seeing how tough life can be.
00:08:17Jamie knows where he came from
00:08:19and how we lived when he was born.
00:08:22However, he does not know how that feels
00:08:25and that's something that I'm looking forward to showing him.
00:08:31Becky wants the week to give Amy a very different kind of education.
00:08:35I'm hoping that Amy will learn this week
00:08:38that financial stability is possible and very achievable.
00:08:44But that's not something Becky has managed to achieve.
00:08:47She lacks the confidence to earn more
00:08:49and is hoping the swap will show her the way.
00:08:52It would alleviate so much mental stress.
00:08:57Having a bit of extra money every month,
00:08:59I would definitely do more with Amy.
00:09:03Could she even be tempted by a new life in the sun?
00:09:08Oh, my goodness, you've got the letter!
00:09:11How exciting!
00:09:13It's time for both families to find out
00:09:15where they'll be living for the week.
00:09:17You are going to Alicante, Spain!
00:09:23Wow! No way!
00:09:28Happy tears are good, Amy. We're going to Spain!
00:09:34Exciting!
00:09:35All right, drum roll, please.
00:09:41You're heading to Hockley in Essex.
00:09:44That must be close to where I grew up.
00:09:46Yeah, really?
00:09:48Oh, my God. That's quite close to where I used to live.
00:09:50Looking forward to see that.
00:09:52It's going to be interesting.
00:09:54Interesting is the word.
00:09:59Day one.
00:10:01I've just packed an array of stuff, really,
00:10:03because I've literally got no clue what I'm going to be doing.
00:10:06I don't know. I'm excited to find out to be honest with you.
00:10:09I'm just excited.
00:10:14I hope they like it.
00:10:16Everyone has to make a 1,500-mile trip to their new homes.
00:10:20Oh, my goodness! It's so exciting!
00:10:23We're at the airport, getting ready to board our flight to Hockley, to the swap house.
00:10:32After two and a half hours in the air...
00:10:34Are you being excited?
00:10:36Very.
00:10:37Are you excited?
00:10:38I don't know.
00:10:39Yeah.
00:10:40Are you excited?
00:10:41Oh, 100%.
00:10:44Back on the ground, anticipation is building.
00:10:48But this area doesn't look too bad.
00:10:51It could...
00:10:52I was expecting it to be worse, to be honest, I think.
00:10:56Yeah.
00:10:56Well, I mean, we haven't got there yet, so...
00:10:58These houses are really fancy, aren't they?
00:11:00I didn't think it was going to be this fancy.
00:11:03It looks like a film set.
00:11:05OK.
00:11:06Oh, it's a house.
00:11:08All right.
00:11:09Well, the sun's come out for our arrival, so...
00:11:12Let's see.
00:11:13Oh, look, all the little...
00:11:15This is not bad at all.
00:11:15There's a little girl that lives here, look.
00:11:16Little kitchen.
00:11:18OK.
00:11:18Yeah?
00:11:20It's...
00:11:20Yeah.
00:11:21Oh, what's this?
00:11:22Pocket money list?
00:11:23Pocket money list.
00:11:25Open...
00:11:25Sesame.
00:11:26Oh, they were there!
00:11:28No way!
00:11:30No way, look at that view.
00:11:32Oh!
00:11:32Wow!
00:11:35I told you that!
00:11:36Swimming pool!
00:11:38Wow!
00:11:39Just what you dreamed of!
00:11:41Oh!
00:11:42Look at these views.
00:11:45Yeah, amazing, aren't they?
00:11:47I mean, it's a bit small.
00:11:49It's actually tiny.
00:11:52Oh, that's a bit stiff.
00:11:54OK, it's nice.
00:11:56It's quite dangerous, because there's, like, bits falling apart.
00:12:00Before they immerse themselves in each other's lives,
00:12:03the challenge is to find clues about their mystery hosts.
00:12:07Shabbat, baby!
00:12:08Shabbat!
00:12:09Welcome to my home.
00:12:11By Nanny, Mummy and Me.
00:12:13Oh, OK.
00:12:13Aren't they so cute?
00:12:14Oh, look!
00:12:16They're younger than what I thought they'd be.
00:12:18Look at what these are.
00:12:19Art state.
00:12:20Real state, yeah.
00:12:22These are, like, luxury stuff, though.
00:12:23This isn't, like...
00:12:24This is an art every day.
00:12:27Right, let's see what we've got upstairs.
00:12:29The families have also got to get used to sleeping in different beds.
00:12:33Hello, Jamie.
00:12:34Do your make-up, sir.
00:12:35Make-up.
00:12:36But, God, it's tiny.
00:12:38It's real small, yeah.
00:12:40So maybe it's just her and her mum?
00:12:42Wow, this is my room.
00:12:46Look how big that shower is.
00:12:49Oh!
00:12:50It's got a night!
00:12:52Oh, change color!
00:12:55OK, it's blue, and it's tiny.
00:12:59Yeah, this is really tiny.
00:12:59And I've just realised there's only one bathroom.
00:13:01We've all got to share one bathroom.
00:13:03I think that will be the hardest part, actually.
00:13:07They won't always be able to share.
00:13:10On both sides, the bathrooms are set up with private diary-cums.
00:13:15This is so far beyond my wildest imagination.
00:13:21It's massive.
00:13:22It's like five of our living rooms.
00:13:26I find it quite small.
00:13:27Oh, I do.
00:13:28Reality started to kick in a bit.
00:13:30This is going to be a lot harder than I thought it was going to be.
00:13:33Coming up, a big double surprise as both sides find out their weekly budgets.
00:13:39That's pretty much what we spent on dinner yesterday.
00:13:44There's bathroom mayhem in Essex.
00:13:46Hurry up, I need the toilet.
00:13:48Oh, you're going to have to wait, Jamie.
00:13:50I'm tired.
00:13:50And in Spain, the smart house is too clever by half.
00:13:54This house is like a robot house.
00:13:57Ooh.
00:14:03In Essex, trainee teacher Becky battles to keep financially afloat.
00:14:09I meal plan very specifically.
00:14:13I also use apps where I can pick up free food or heavily discounted food.
00:14:17But we'll always put daughter Amy first.
00:14:20We always find fun things to do, even if we don't have any money to spend.
00:14:25And is hoping to learn from the swap how to balance her bills.
00:14:30It would alleviate so much mental stress.
00:14:34Millionaire Adam left Essex to live the expat dream in Alicante on Spain's Costa Blanca.
00:14:41So the Lamborghini cost me 150,000 euros.
00:14:44But it's good fun.
00:14:46I think it's worth it.
00:14:47As a serial entrepreneur, he knows what it takes to succeed.
00:14:52Having been super poor and now being more wealthy, now I feel it's time to give back.
00:14:57Now they are swapping homes and lives for the week.
00:15:01And I've just realised there's only one bathroom.
00:15:03We've all got to share.
00:15:04And it's the moment everyone's been waiting for.
00:15:07How much cash do they have to spend?
00:15:11Alright, this is where I get serious, the budget.
00:15:14Go on, Jamie, do the honours.
00:15:15Let's see what we've got.
00:15:17Let's see.
00:15:18I'm nervous, mate.
00:15:1920, 40, 60, 80.
00:15:255.
00:15:27550.
00:15:28600.
00:15:29600.
00:15:30650.
00:15:301,500.
00:15:36126.
00:15:3727.
00:15:387.
00:15:41128 pounds and 10 pence.
00:15:43Oh, God.
00:15:44Yeah.
00:15:44That's pretty much what we spent on dinner yesterday.
00:15:48Yeah?
00:15:49True.
00:15:50100, 200, 300, 400, 500.
00:15:54200, 500.
00:15:57In one way.
00:15:58Oh, my word.
00:16:002,500 euros is nearly 2,200 pounds.
00:16:06Yeah, but that's like my whole wages.
00:16:08More than my wages in a month.
00:16:12But that is fair every week.
00:16:14Yeah.
00:16:15They manage to live on 100 and, what was it, 28 pounds?
00:16:20Yeah.
00:16:20A week.
00:16:21Mm.
00:16:21She is doing really well.
00:16:23Yeah, that's true.
00:16:24So, fair play to her.
00:16:26What?
00:16:28I thought she was going to do that.
00:16:30They're not going to be able to do that with our budget, are they?
00:16:33They are not only swapping budgets, but lives as well.
00:16:37And both families have left a schedule for the week.
00:16:41Activities.
00:16:41Interesting.
00:16:43All right.
00:16:44OK.
00:16:45What have we got?
00:16:47Food app shop.
00:16:49I assume we need to order the shopping from an app on our phone.
00:16:53Uh-huh.
00:16:54Oh, we've got to go to a board meeting.
00:16:56Oh, God, I haven't got anything to wear to a board meeting.
00:17:00Catch up at the community centre.
00:17:03At the community centre?
00:17:05A luxury family outing.
00:17:08I mean, we know what family outings are,
00:17:10but I don't know what a luxury one would be.
00:17:14Knowing that we only have, like, £128 for the week,
00:17:18that brought back lots of really uncomfortable memories
00:17:22from when I was younger and running out of money before payday.
00:17:25I'm so excited to be able to spoil Amy in the way that she deserves.
00:17:30She never asks for anything.
00:17:32All the expensive stuff they have, it's just astonishing.
00:17:38Dinner time.
00:17:39The hero is quite empty.
00:17:40The fridge is very empty.
00:17:42But no £200 food deliveries in Essex.
00:17:45We've got some cans, kidney beans,
00:17:48rice pudding.
00:17:49Oh, look, meeples.
00:17:51That's the Swedish thing, yeah?
00:17:52And pasta.
00:17:53I don't know how to put this one on.
00:17:55All right, well, we'll have to make it work.
00:17:57Oh, my God.
00:17:58Oh, my God.
00:18:01Okay, okay, we're good.
00:18:03This reminds me of camping.
00:18:04Did you ever go camping when you was a kid?
00:18:06Eh, not really.
00:18:08So much.
00:18:09I think we all used to have a bit of luxury and that's why it's a bit hard.
00:18:13How do you even do these ones that's in a thing like this?
00:18:16Er, you just pour this.
00:18:19It's...
00:18:19Yeah.
00:18:20Ah!
00:18:22Oh, my God.
00:18:23I haven't eaten out of a can for a long time.
00:18:29In Alicante...
00:18:30Oh!
00:18:32That wasn't what I was expecting.
00:18:35Adam's £50 champagne would cover Becky's food for a week.
00:18:42Harmony, they left it for us.
00:18:44Like, how kind is that?
00:18:45Just enjoy you've arrived.
00:18:52Day two.
00:18:53In Essex, Adam's waking up in a house a quarter the size of his own.
00:18:59Oh, it was a long night.
00:19:01This bed is so uncomfortable.
00:19:03I'm not looking forward to sleeping here again.
00:19:07Yeah.
00:19:08My sleep was awful.
00:19:10I'm used to moving around in a bed more.
00:19:13I couldn't really move.
00:19:14And this thing above my head as well.
00:19:17Kept beating myself in this in the middle of the night.
00:19:20Like over 60% of UK houses, Becky's only has one bathroom.
00:19:25All right, I need to clean my teeth ever.
00:19:27Yeah, but I'm not ready yet.
00:19:29Yeah, but just move over.
00:19:30All right, you stay on this side.
00:19:32I'll stay on this side.
00:19:33Yeah, okay, but you're on my side now.
00:19:35Hurry up, I need the toilet.
00:19:37Oh, you're going to have to wait, Jamie.
00:19:39You're trying to get ready.
00:19:40I can't.
00:19:41I miss my own suite.
00:19:43So much room in there.
00:19:45All right, five minutes, we're nearly ready.
00:19:50In Spain...
00:19:51I slept really well.
00:19:52This feels quite hotel-like.
00:19:56There's so many bathrooms.
00:19:57We just need to go for a little hunt for where...
00:20:00Where are the toothpasteers?
00:20:02For the first time in their lives,
00:20:05Becky and Amy have a bathroom each.
00:20:07We haven't even, like, seen each other, really.
00:20:09Whereas, normally, we're all on top of each other, and...
00:20:13It's a bit chaotic, but this is very calm.
00:20:18I think I'd want this kind of life.
00:20:20You don't have to share so much.
00:20:22It's so much better.
00:20:26In Essex, Becky uses a food rescue app
00:20:29to hunt down bargain bags of food
00:20:31and keep her groceries to £50 a week.
00:20:34Now it's Adam's turn.
00:20:36Okay, so what's normally £9, £10 is down to, like,
00:20:40£2 or £3.
00:20:41Oh, that's cool, yeah.
00:20:43That's handy.
00:20:43That's very good.
00:20:44Oh, we're going to make way more of our budget using this.
00:20:47Mm-hmm.
00:20:47Oh, look, you can do a full food shop here
00:20:49in the supermarket,
00:20:52but you don't get to choose what you get.
00:20:54That's the only...
00:20:55Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:20:56That's the only problem.
00:20:58Heyman is made through the app
00:21:00to pick up value bags of food from over 30,000 outlets.
00:21:04All right, let's see what this, uh, surprise parcel is.
00:21:07Yes.
00:21:09But what's in the bags depends on what hasn't been sold.
00:21:13I think the app's really important
00:21:15because I don't know how they afford to live
00:21:17on the amount of money they have every month.
00:21:19Um, here in the UK.
00:21:21Like, the cost of living crisis has literally taken over.
00:21:24This bag would normally cost £10,
00:21:27but using the app, it's down to £3.30.
00:21:31Oh, what have we got? Cakes?
00:21:33Yes, now.
00:21:34Oh, the diet's gone right out the window.
00:21:36Look at them.
00:21:37What else have we got?
00:21:40Cookies.
00:21:41Oh, no, it's chocolate.
00:21:43What's that?
00:21:44Roast.
00:21:44Mash.
00:21:45Yeah.
00:21:46All right.
00:21:46Sweet potato mash.
00:21:47Sweet potato mash.
00:21:48Nice.
00:21:48What else?
00:21:49Oh, chicken.
00:21:50Chicken.
00:21:51Oh, now we're talking.
00:21:53I've got all the best food from the supermarket
00:21:55and get deals and that, so it makes me feel privileged.
00:22:01No way.
00:22:03Oh, now we need to get the water in.
00:22:05Adam has fresh food delivered three times a week.
00:22:08The £600 total would feed Becky for three months.
00:22:13There's a...
00:22:14Asparagus.
00:22:15Asparagus.
00:22:16You used to like that when you were little.
00:22:17Oh, radish.
00:22:18Radish.
00:22:19You like radish.
00:22:20Strawberries.
00:22:21You would never buy all that food in one week.
00:22:23Oh, 178 and two peas.
00:22:31£178 for this.
00:22:34But can they use the two-grand high-tech hob?
00:22:38Right, you want scrambled eggs.
00:22:41You know, this is great technology, didn't you?
00:22:43Yeah, I found out how to turn it on.
00:22:45I found out how to turn it up, but now it's flashing.
00:22:47This house is like a robot house, but it's flashing again.
00:22:51There's a button and a screen and stuff to work out for everything.
00:22:56Wait, hold on, hold on, hold on.
00:22:59This induction hob only works with iron or stainless steel pans.
00:23:05And the only thing heating up is Becky.
00:23:08Amy's absolutely starving, so I'm currently oven-cooking an omelette.
00:23:15In Essex, Adam's also checking out the house and finds a troubling document.
00:23:21So this is a credit card debt of £2,032.
00:23:28She's been using this just for Tesco shopping and things.
00:23:31This is high interest as well. And as the months go on, a normal food shop is now costing way
00:23:36more
00:23:37because they've got interest to pay on top of it.
00:23:39She's in a hard position, and I feel like the only way out of this would be to, you know,
00:23:45make more money.
00:23:47Someone who knows all about Becky's struggles is her good friend, Kirsty.
00:23:51Hi, nice meeting you. Hi, nice to meet you.
00:23:56Oh, have a seat. Thank you.
00:23:58So, how do you know Amy and Becky?
00:24:00So, I met Becky 23 years ago. Oh, really?
00:24:04Yeah, we met at a drama group that we used to go to.
00:24:07But you were there when Amy was born then?
00:24:09Basically, yeah.
00:24:10She loves drama, dancing, music, she loves all of that.
00:24:13She does musical theatre. I don't know how she fits it all in.
00:24:16Yeah, literally, yeah. Sounds like she has a busy life.
00:24:19So, tell us a bit more about what Becky actually does.
00:24:21So, she works in a pupil referral unit.
00:24:24OK. So, children that have been suspended or excluded from their school.
00:24:29Oh, I can imagine that is not easy.
00:24:31But she absolutely loves it. She's made for it.
00:24:33So, I also see in the kitchen that she's got quite a lot of debt.
00:24:36She works so hard, Becky, but there's just so much that she has to pay for.
00:24:42And she's always juggling things. She doesn't want Amy to miss out.
00:24:46Kirsty was there when Becky faced her toughest challenge as a mum.
00:24:50A few years ago, Becky got diagnosed with breast cancer.
00:24:53Oh, no.
00:24:54Amy was only two, three, maybe.
00:24:58Oh, no.
00:24:59It was really hard. I mean, she was incredible.
00:25:03She's in remission now and she's doing amazing.
00:25:06But she did all of that with a little girl.
00:25:09Definitely hearing her story, I do have a whole new respect for her.
00:25:14But I know it's just not that easy, especially if you've got into debt.
00:25:19I'm thinking, like, how I could maybe help them with this situation they're in.
00:25:24Coming up, the truth about Adam is revealed.
00:25:27Adam says to my mum, I'm having a baby.
00:25:30He was 16.
00:25:32It means that nothing is, like, unachievable.
00:25:35Adam's inspired by Becky's story.
00:25:37It's become really apparent that she loves working with children,
00:25:41but she's in a hard position.
00:25:43I feel like there's definitely something that could be done.
00:25:46And Becky is set a daunting challenge.
00:25:49We've got a video book for you to do tomorrow morning.
00:25:53LAUGHTER
00:25:55Adam, he's got a lot more self-confidence and self-belief.
00:25:59That is definitely what I need to do.
00:26:06Ex-pat millionaire Adam has gone back to Essex with son Jamie and girlfriend Ebba
00:26:12to live Becky's budget life.
00:26:14Oh, God.
00:26:15Yeah.
00:26:16And they make a big discovery.
00:26:17So, this is a credit card debt of £2,032.
00:26:24But I know it's just not that easy, especially if you've got into debt.
00:26:28I'm thinking, like, how I could maybe help them with this situation they're in.
00:26:32But for one week in Spain, Becky has nearly 20 times her normal income.
00:26:37Two down to five hundred!
00:26:41This is so far beyond my wildest imagination.
00:26:49Day three.
00:26:51Right, let's get ready.
00:26:54And for Becky, the multi-bathroom villa isn't quite living up to expectations.
00:26:59Do you like having separate bathrooms?
00:27:01Yes. You do?
00:27:02Yeah.
00:27:03But I miss you when you're not in my bathroom.
00:27:09I do.
00:27:10Me and Amy got ready in the same bathroom this morning,
00:27:12because I just can't deal with, like, being separate.
00:27:15And she keeps calling me anyway, so I might as well just be there.
00:27:18Although it's absolutely amazing for a little breakaway,
00:27:21it's definitely not what I aspire to in my day-to-day life.
00:27:27Right on cue, there's a visitor to explain who does aspire to this life.
00:27:31Yeah, I'm Robin.
00:27:33Oh, Adam's sister.
00:27:34Oh, okay, I'm Becky.
00:27:36Nice to meet you.
00:27:37Oh, happy to meet you. Hi.
00:27:38Robin knows all about Adam's Essex roots.
00:27:41So, you know, we were in this one-bed apartment.
00:27:44Adam says to my mum, I'm having a baby.
00:27:48He was 16, so she's like, right.
00:27:52Okay, so Adam's gonna have to have the sofa bed,
00:27:57and I'm gonna have to be in with the twins.
00:27:59We just made it work. So, was Jamie's mum there?
00:28:02So, when Jamie was born, that made six people in a one-bedroom flat?
00:28:07Yeah. Yeah, so, a very chaotic time.
00:28:10Although it was stressful, Adam tried to make sure
00:28:12that he did the best that he possibly could to get to where he wanted to be.
00:28:17I remember him getting up early doors, going, washing lorries,
00:28:20and then going out of an evening delivering leaflets for an estate agent.
00:28:24So, off the back of that, his boss gave him an apprenticeship.
00:28:27Oh, perfect. Yeah, he then learnt everything he needed to learn
00:28:32and opened up his own.
00:28:33He sounds like he was really working hard back then.
00:28:36How did that go from that to sort of this?
00:28:40It doesn't stop till he's on top, but I think the way that he gives back
00:28:44is he now, where he was an apprentice, he now hires apprentices to come.
00:28:48I know. Brilliant.
00:28:49Where do you start where he did?
00:28:51I hadn't really thought about where they would be from originally.
00:28:58But I guess it was quite reassuring, if that's the right word,
00:29:02to know that, like, it does happen to people like us.
00:29:06Like, it means that nothing is, like, unachievable.
00:29:11Dad?
00:29:13Yes, mate?
00:29:14What do you want on your toast?
00:29:15Erm, just some butter, please, mate.
00:29:17All right.
00:29:18Jamie normally has everything he could ask for,
00:29:21but this week he's finding out how tough life can be for the other half.
00:29:26I'm missing my usual life, erm, saying the best.
00:29:30Adam's hoping the swap will teach Jamie the value of money
00:29:34and how lucky he is.
00:29:36Oh, thank you, mate.
00:29:38Bit of toast.
00:29:40Plastic.
00:29:43Today, he's taking on Amy's chores.
00:29:46Jamie actually made us breakfast this morning, so that was a first.
00:29:50He doesn't normally do that for us.
00:29:52Lovely.
00:29:54All right, so on Amy's list, she has doing the washing up, 50p.
00:30:01Next on there's tidying up the living room.
00:30:04Tidying up your bedroom.
00:30:05That is one you need to practise,
00:30:07cos your bedroom's always a mess.
00:30:09Then Hoover, 50p.
00:30:12Nice.
00:30:13Right, mate, that'll do you this morning.
00:30:14You gonna tick off some of them?
00:30:16Yeah, I'll tick off.
00:30:17Right, you've got to do it first.
00:30:20Rub the tick off.
00:30:21Nah, you can do it.
00:30:22I'm not paying you in advance.
00:30:24Jamie normally gets 30 quid a week pocket money.
00:30:27Now he's having to graft hard for 50p a job.
00:30:31He did the washing up, bless him.
00:30:33And he did a good job, actually.
00:30:34No complaining, he just got it done.
00:30:38He will help me at work and he will try and earn some pocket money himself.
00:30:42So he does have a good attitude when it comes to earning money,
00:30:45but he's got a terrible attitude when it comes to keeping it.
00:30:49I feel quite privileged, but when I come over to the other side,
00:30:53I don't, it's not very nice.
00:30:55So I'm starting to understand what other people feel like now.
00:31:01What's the fuck it is?
00:31:03Yeah.
00:31:03Yeah.
00:31:03In Spain, next on the activity list is going to Adam's Alicante estate agency.
00:31:10It's lovely to meet you.
00:31:11I'm Angela.
00:31:12Becky.
00:31:12Nice to meet you.
00:31:13Sales manager Angela knows the secrets of Adam's success.
00:31:18When Adam gets something in his head and says that he's going to achieve it,
00:31:22then nothing he's getting in his way.
00:31:23He's got it.
00:31:24You might as well, if he says that he wants 10 Lamborghinis, I'm like,
00:31:27oh God, everyone better buckle up, because he's getting them 100%.
00:31:31He doesn't take any nonsense from anybody, but he's really, really kind,
00:31:34and he's really, really giving.
00:31:35One thing that Adam does very well is try to find out what people's strengths are
00:31:39and try to stretch them a little bit further in what they're good at.
00:31:41And that's what Becky wants, guidance to make more money.
00:31:46Just feel like I'm stuck in this loop of financial struggle
00:31:50that I just can't see how I can break out of.
00:31:54Taking a seat at the boardroom, Becky's strengths are going under the microscope.
00:31:59We set our target of 15 sales this month.
00:32:03The more that we sell, the more that everybody here earns.
00:32:05But most importantly, it's a target launch, and we all get to go out.
00:32:08We get targets at home, and we get to go somewhere nice.
00:32:11Adam picks it, of course.
00:32:12Becky's in for a surprise.
00:32:15Adam's organised for her to show a house on camera
00:32:17to see how confident she can be.
00:32:19We've got a video book for you to do tomorrow morning.
00:32:23Yeah.
00:32:23In a nice 2.3 million home on Las Colinas.
00:32:28We'll go to the property tomorrow.
00:32:30We'll give you a tour around.
00:32:32You can get yourself familiar with it.
00:32:33And, yeah, plan what you want to say.
00:32:35Is it actually going to go on the Instagram?
00:32:38Yeah, why not?
00:32:39Yeah, we don't take no for an answer here.
00:32:44It's a big challenge.
00:32:45Is there anything Becky can draw on from her own job?
00:32:49The children I work with are quite disadvantaged.
00:32:52So they're children with behaviour issues,
00:32:55because they just don't want to come to school.
00:32:57They definitely don't want to be in a classroom,
00:32:58and they sure as anything do not want to be learning.
00:33:00OK.
00:33:01So, yeah.
00:33:02OK, so you've got quite good skills, then,
00:33:03at being able to get people to do what you want them to do.
00:33:06Yeah.
00:33:07Without being quite so direct, though.
00:33:09And the way that Angela found the similarities between the two jobs,
00:33:13I actually found quite interesting,
00:33:14and I never really thought of it that way before.
00:33:17Yeah.
00:33:17So you're really quite thick-skinned.
00:33:18Oh, yeah, because it's all about, yeah, like, managing situations.
00:33:22I definitely feel like Adam is more self-assured than me.
00:33:27He's got a lot more self-confidence and self-belief,
00:33:30which I knew I needed to work on, but it's really reinforced the fact
00:33:34that that is definitely what I need to do.
00:33:42In Essex, there's no high-end selling,
00:33:45just a local community centre where Becky and Amy head for budget fund.
00:33:51Slow, slow, slowly, nice and smooth.
00:33:53Bro, shush.
00:33:54All right.
00:33:55It's good bonding time and back in old Essex, isn't it, Jamie boy?
00:33:59Yeah.
00:34:00Yeah, oh!
00:34:01He's back in the game, he's back in the game.
00:34:03The Hockley Community Centre is one of 20,000 local centres in the UK
00:34:09that many low-income families rely on.
00:34:15It's a very different type of pool to the private one Jamie has in Spain.
00:34:20Oh, I'm privileged, so I've got quite a lot of things.
00:34:24These people, unfortunately, don't have as much as me,
00:34:29but hopefully one day they do.
00:34:32Oh, the pressure!
00:34:34And it brought back some memories playing pool,
00:34:36sort of like a pub environment again,
00:34:38and it was really cool to do that with Jamie,
00:34:40so me and him could experience together
00:34:43sort of what I used to do back when I was younger.
00:34:49Another person who relies on the community centre is Beth.
00:34:53Oh, hi!
00:34:54Who's worked with Becky teaching children with behavioural issues.
00:34:59I can imagine it's not an easy job at all.
00:35:01You encounter everything.
00:35:03You encounter trauma from children,
00:35:05you encounter difficult upbringings and medical conditions,
00:35:11everything you can think of we see day to day, but we love it.
00:35:15So is there a reason for that?
00:35:17Or is it just something that she started doing and sort of fell in love?
00:35:20It's a real passion for her.
00:35:21I think it's just the growth you see in the children.
00:35:26You see them come here with not trusting anybody,
00:35:30not feeling safe and not wanting to learn hate in school,
00:35:34and then they come out feeling that they can rely on people.
00:35:39It sounds like you're doing a great job, so well done to you guys.
00:35:43It's become really apparent that she loves working with children.
00:35:46It's a real passion for her, but she's in a hard position,
00:35:50and I feel like the only way out of this would be to, you know, make more money.
00:35:55I feel like there's definitely something that could be done.
00:36:01..in Spain.
00:36:05See you in the morning.
00:36:07Lights out means navigating the £10,000 automated system.
00:36:12Oh, now, why did that work?
00:36:16Right, so all lights on. So we don't want all lights on.
00:36:19Oh, now we've got... Now, look, everything's gone off.
00:36:22..I just couldn't justify standing in a room for 20 minutes
00:36:28when you can just go like that. I don't get it.
00:36:32So if I do that, erm...
00:36:36..let's try that.
00:36:44Coming up... Check out!
00:36:46..Becky's tested as a millionaire agent.
00:36:49..Listed at over two... Just over two...
00:36:52I definitely felt the pressure not to be to Essex.
00:36:56..and Adam shows Jamie where it all began.
00:36:59This is where you were born, Jamie, look.
00:37:01In that apartment up there.
00:37:03Six of us that lived in this, like, one-bedroom apartment.
00:37:10It's day four of the swap.
00:37:13In Spain, Becky's working out the secrets of Adam's success.
00:37:17If he says that he wants ten Lamborghinis, I'm like,
00:37:20Oh, God.
00:37:21Everyone better buckle up, because he's getting them.
00:37:24Adam is more self-assured than me.
00:37:27That is definitely what I need to do.
00:37:30While in Essex, Adam's trying to show Ebba and Jamie
00:37:34how hard his life was before becoming a millionaire.
00:37:38We can boil some eggs.
00:37:39Boiled eggs on toast.
00:37:42The reason I want to share it with, erm, Jamie and Ebba
00:37:45is I think that they will understand
00:37:48that my ambition comes from somewhere.
00:37:52Becky's house is just 40 minutes from where he grew up
00:37:55in Romford as a teenager.
00:37:57Now Adam's made a big decision.
00:38:00Yeah, so today we're going to go back to the apartment,
00:38:03erm, like, the flat where Jamie was born,
00:38:06show him, erm, where he come from, like, humble beginnings.
00:38:10You can rent a one-bed council flat in Romford for £500 a month.
00:38:15Adam's Spanish villa would be 20 times that.
00:38:18This is where you were born, Jamie, look.
00:38:20In that apartment up there.
00:38:22So this is where we came to when I called Nanny to say that
00:38:25your mum was pregnant with you when I was 16.
00:38:28There was six of us that lived in this, like, one-bedroom apartment.
00:38:32It was crazy.
00:38:33Yeah, that's a lot, yeah.
00:38:33Yeah.
00:38:34Yeah, it's heavy, man.
00:38:35Like, thinking back to it now, I don't know how we managed.
00:38:37I mean, we were there for, like, nearly a year.
00:38:40It was so cold that the inside of the windows
00:38:42would get, like, condensation on them and wet.
00:38:45And you'd wake up and you're, like, blankets would be wet.
00:38:48Oh, that's insane.
00:38:49I know.
00:38:51Look how rough it is.
00:38:52Oh, my God.
00:38:54Must bring back a lot of emotions.
00:38:55Look how small the kitchen was. It's tiny.
00:38:59You think five or six of us in there cooking.
00:39:01This is real tiny.
00:39:03Isn't it?
00:39:04Yeah.
00:39:05Even the car park.
00:39:06Look, they haven't fixed anything.
00:39:07So it's funny because, like, there's lots of bad memories of,
00:39:11like, you know, being really cold in the flat.
00:39:14Well, it's a far cry from where we are now, eh?
00:39:17The house that I live in now, in Spain,
00:39:20and the house I lived in in the UK is so, so much different.
00:39:23It was quite nice to see that my dad's done so well for himself.
00:39:27It really hits home seeing it, seeing it firsthand, doesn't it?
00:39:30You've done well for yourself, though, ain't you, Dad?
00:39:33Look where you was at the beginning and now look where you are.
00:39:36Yeah, I'm proud of myself.
00:39:37I've managed to get out of that, this situation
00:39:40and get to where I am now and, like, how well you've turned out.
00:39:44So I'm more proud of how you've turned out
00:39:46than I am about, like, material things that I've managed to achieve.
00:39:50Hey, you've raised me, aren't you?
00:39:55In Alicante, it's a huge day for Becky,
00:39:58as she's going in front of camera
00:40:00to sell a luxury villa for Adam's agency.
00:40:04So, what are you most nervous about, do you think?
00:40:07Looking really common.
00:40:09Looking really common?
00:40:11Mm.
00:40:11The sounding really common.
00:40:13The sounding really common.
00:40:14And I get my words modelled up, don't I?
00:40:16When we're in our own little comfort zone, life's easy, isn't it?
00:40:20And then you go and do something and you think,
00:40:22well, actually... Yeah.
00:40:23..in my head, that was going to be so difficult.
00:40:27Oh, yeah, definitely.
00:40:27And then when you've done it, it's like, yes, I can do that.
00:40:34Adam's pulling the strings.
00:40:35He's set this up as a secret audition to work out Becky's strengths
00:40:39and see how he can help her.
00:40:42Nice and exciting. Yeah, I'm excited and pumped.
00:40:44Good, good.
00:40:46Angela will be feeding back to Adam about Becky's performance,
00:40:49but can she overcome her nerves?
00:40:52The most important thing is that you come with the energy...
00:40:55Yeah. ..and you're confident in what you're saying.
00:40:57Yeah, that's fine.
00:40:58..it has got to be Shakespeare.
00:40:59Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's fine.
00:41:01You've got to look at what you're saying.
00:41:03Yeah, as long as I'm covering all the points you want,
00:41:04then I'm happy with that.
00:41:06So, that's it. Cool.
00:41:07I'd stand over here... Yep.
00:41:08..and we'll have you walking out and telling everybody
00:41:11to check out the villa.
00:41:12Yeah, and I could say...
00:41:13..and that six-bedrooms, four-bathrooms...
00:41:16..six-bedroom, four-bathroom on...
00:41:18..Las Colinas Golf Resort.
00:41:19..Las Cosinas...
00:41:21..Colinas.
00:41:22..Right. Yeah?
00:41:23..exclusive La Colinas Golf Course.
00:41:25Yeah. But I think she's a bit nervous.
00:41:28..check out this beautiful villa on Las Cosinas Golf Course.
00:41:33Sorry.
00:41:35Check out these amazing views listed at over two...
00:41:39..just over two...
00:41:40..la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la.
00:41:41No, definitely not.
00:41:42I definitely felt the pressure not to be too Essex
00:41:46and to speak eloquently.
00:41:49But after a faltering start, Becky hits her stride.
00:41:54This villa features six bedrooms, four bathrooms and these amazing panoramic views.
00:42:03You have to get on the website, drop us a comment or send us a DM to get your booking
00:42:08in today.
00:42:102.3 million, drop us a DM.
00:42:13OK, so that's it, video done. I think that you did an amazing job.
00:42:16Oh, thank you. You've got all the words that you wanted to say.
00:42:18It's about to pronounce them all good.
00:42:20Thank you so much.
00:42:22Been interesting? Oh, yeah, definitely.
00:42:24Is it interesting enough to swap her Essex pupils for selling houses in Spain?
00:42:30I'm not saying it's a horrible job or anything. It's just, it's not my passion.
00:42:36I'm glad that I took part in the promotional video and it did push me to my limits of my
00:42:44comfort zone.
00:42:45Doing that video will hopefully give her a wider scope to maybe look into avenues she never thought of because
00:42:54she didn't think she was confident enough.
00:42:57So, how well did Becky do?
00:43:00Hi, Ange, how are you?
00:43:01Back in Essex, Adam checks in with Angela.
00:43:05How did Becky get on it today?
00:43:07Oh, she was absolutely amazing, actually. I think she was really nervous to start with, with a little bit of
00:43:12encouragement, really.
00:43:14And she kind of settled in quite nicely.
00:43:16OK, well, that's good.
00:43:17She works a lot with disadvantaged children.
00:43:19So, when she sort of started to explain a little bit more in our board meeting, I think everybody was
00:43:24quite amazed at her determination.
00:43:27Yeah, so that's, like, her passion. Like, she's obviously very passionate about that, but if it doesn't make enough money
00:43:33for her to live the life that she wants to live, do you think she'd be open to me sort
00:43:37of mentoring her to help her going forward?
00:43:41Yeah, I definitely do.
00:43:43She's a great woman. She's obviously got quite a savvy brain. She just needs some direction to know what to
00:43:49do.
00:43:50I was so happy to get the feedback from Angela that Becky really went for it.
00:43:55And that really gave me the ambition to try and help her going forward, knowing that she would, you know,
00:44:03grab it, grab the opportunity with both hands and go for it.
00:44:06While Adam hatches a plan to help Becky make money around her teaching, in Alicante, for once, Becky has a
00:44:15very different type of cash problem.
00:44:18Oh, wow.
00:44:19Yeah, like a...
00:44:21That's really nice.
00:44:22Like a two-piece, and then you can always put something underneath.
00:44:26Oh, OK.
00:44:27With £1,800 still in her pocket, next on the schedule is shopping in Alicante's top boutiques.
00:44:36What about a nice colourful dress?
00:44:40Oh, yeah, I will try that on.
00:44:42I feel guilty. Normally, I definitely wouldn't dream of spending any money on myself, voluntarily, without getting, like, five people's
00:44:50approval.
00:44:51Give it a go?
00:44:54Yes.
00:44:55Becky's normal clothes budget is £40 a month.
00:44:59Today, she can spend nearly 50 times that amount.
00:45:04Very nice.
00:45:05I actually really like this one.
00:45:07Yeah, it's really comfy.
00:45:08I love how it cinches you in at the waist, and then it kind of goes out.
00:45:12It's nice and floaty, nothing too tight.
00:45:14Yeah, definitely, I feel like.
00:45:16And it's got pockets.
00:45:17Is it actually? Oh, my God, sold.
00:45:22Becky's gaining in confidence, and learning sometimes it's OK to put yourself first.
00:45:27This is nice.
00:45:28I actually like this.
00:45:29That looks a lot better.
00:45:31Doesn't it?
00:45:32Yeah.
00:45:32I like this.
00:45:33I feel really, like, sophisticated in it.
00:45:37And, like, I feel so confident at work.
00:45:40Well, yeah.
00:45:41That'd be 209 with 90 cents.
00:45:45Perfect.
00:45:46Let me get it bagged up.
00:45:48I'm just out of my comfort zone spending money on myself.
00:45:50So, yeah, it's just very bizarre.
00:45:54Bye.
00:45:55At the end of a hard day's shopping, including four pairs of shoes for Amy.
00:46:00Oh, I like these shoes.
00:46:01Oh, I like these shoes.
00:46:03Everywhere.
00:46:05Becky heads home after forking out 1,000 pounds.
00:46:11Coming up.
00:46:12Wow.
00:46:13A life-changing moment.
00:46:15I really do need to do some kind of self-care.
00:46:18I feel like it's definitely the next step in my journey.
00:46:22And Adam and Jamie muck in for a massive surprise.
00:46:26We're going for a full transformation so that Amy has somewhere nice to come and play when she comes back.
00:46:39It's day five of the swap.
00:46:45Yeah, this is our absolute best life.
00:46:49While in Alicante, nine-year-old Amy has all the space and luxury she could dream of.
00:46:56In Essex, Adam and Ebba are trying to adjust to a no-frills life.
00:47:02What do you think of the house so far?
00:47:04I'm struggling, to be honest.
00:47:16Jamie's also feeling the impact of living life like the other half.
00:47:21Doing chores every day for a fraction of his normal 30 pounds a week pocket money.
00:47:27All right, you've done the washing up.
00:47:30That's 50p.
00:47:31Tide of the living room, we've done that one.
00:47:33Tide of the bedroom, we've done that one.
00:47:34You've done the hoovering.
00:47:36So, that's two pound.
00:47:39Yeah, but you've done a really good job, to be honest.
00:47:41So, take five pounds.
00:47:43All right, so you can get some sweets from the shop.
00:47:45All right?
00:47:46Yep.
00:47:46Good boy.
00:47:48Adam's doing well with Becky's £128 budget.
00:47:52You all right?
00:47:54Using Becky's food rescue app throughout the week, he still has 75 quid left.
00:48:01I had to do chores.
00:48:03Washing up, I had to do hoovering, I had to tidy the living room and the bedroom.
00:48:07It'll taste even better, knowing how hard you've worked for it.
00:48:11At Jamie's age, Adam had to graft for every penny.
00:48:15Have a good day.
00:48:16But then got his big break with an estate agent.
00:48:20Now, inspired by Becky's work with referred pupils, Adam is researching how to give Essex
00:48:26teens the same kind of chance he had.
00:48:29And has tracked down Hayley, who is the manager of Essex Youth Build, which helps young adults
00:48:35into construction.
00:48:37Hi, Hayley.
00:48:38Really nice to meet you.
00:48:39And you.
00:48:40So, how many children do you actually help with your programme?
00:48:44In Essex alone, there are thousands of young children and older children that are not in
00:48:51education or employment or in training.
00:48:54Oh, wow.
00:48:55And alternative provisions are needed to cater for those young people.
00:49:00Becky, who I've swapped houses with, she actually helps children that are going through a hard time.
00:49:09If they stay in school, that's great.
00:49:11If school's not for you, it doesn't mean that when you leave school, there's nothing.
00:49:16It's about coming together almost as a family and offering these young people a future.
00:49:22Yeah, that's something I'm really passionate about finding.
00:49:25I really want to put a scheme together with Becky so that we can help as many young people as
00:49:31possible get into, you know, further education and start building something that will give them a career in the future.
00:49:39I know that the young people that we interact with, there's thousands more that don't know about these services.
00:49:48What you're doing with Becky is going to open up doors to young people that honestly didn't know they were
00:49:54there.
00:49:55Yeah, that's exactly what we need to do.
00:49:57Because like I said before, if I didn't have this opportunity when I was younger, I really don't know if
00:50:03I would be where I am today.
00:50:07It's just a bit posh, isn't it?
00:50:09Becky normally devotes her life to others, but this week has a chance to finally put herself first.
00:50:16It's amazing.
00:50:18Wow.
00:50:21It's so beautiful.
00:50:23Next up is a luxury spa and a £100 massage.
00:50:28Oh my God.
00:50:30This is madness.
00:50:32Definitely not real life.
00:50:35With Amy and Bev in the pool next door, the time is all her own.
00:50:44I cannot remember the last time I spent quality time by myself.
00:50:51The things that I find difficult to let go of are the guilt.
00:50:55Like I felt guilty that my mum was looking after Amy.
00:51:01I really do need to work out how I can do some kind of self-care.
00:51:08I feel like it's definitely the next step in my journey.
00:51:12Because I don't feel like I can move on to the next part of whatever's going to happen without being
00:51:21able to have that.
00:51:24Really tickling.
00:51:27The treatment was amazing and my shoulders are finally up around my ears.
00:51:33So that's a nice feeling.
00:51:35Becky might be learning self-care.
00:51:38That's for the therapist because she was just amazing.
00:51:40But there's nothing selfish about a £100 tip.
00:51:44I feel very relaxed now.
00:51:47Oh, you know what that means, don't you?
00:51:49What happened?
00:51:50Yeah, she'll go to sleep.
00:51:52So, should we say goodnight to her now?
00:51:54See you in the morning?
00:51:56I think so.
00:51:59In Essex, Becky's tiny house has been a tough reminder of Adam's teen years.
00:52:05Right, I need to clean my teeth ever.
00:52:07But there's one area that could be transformed to make a huge difference to Amy.
00:52:12The garden really dawned on me that we need to try and do something to fix that.
00:52:18That's a space that they could be using to enjoy as a family.
00:52:21It's just completely wasted at the moment.
00:52:25Yeah, Jamie, look, if we get somebody to fix all of this, fix the steps, so then it's safe.
00:52:31Yeah.
00:52:32And then up here, it's just clearing it, get rid of all of that.
00:52:36Look, once you clear all of this, the garden's not that small.
00:52:40We're going for a full transformation so that Amy has somewhere nice to come and play when she comes back.
00:52:47The £70 remaining from the weekly budget won't go far, so Adam dips into his own pocket and his contacts.
00:52:56I managed to rope in a friend of mine, called in a favour, so he's got a garden and property
00:53:02maintenance company.
00:53:04And me and Jamie have made a bit of a plan of how we can make that a lot nicer
00:53:07than it is.
00:53:09They are, like, insane fast, actually.
00:53:11They just started digging in directly, and I can't wait to see Amy's reaction on this.
00:53:18The apartment that Jamie was born in, that didn't have any outdoor space at all, so I definitely understand what
00:53:27it'd be like to not have that space, you know?
00:53:29But I do think it's really important for a little one to be able to play outside and get some
00:53:33fresh air and exercise.
00:53:35Again, done now, guys.
00:53:37Oh, a bit of hard graft.
00:53:38It's good for us, eh?
00:53:40Get going.
00:53:41Well done.
00:53:42Strong lad, getting in all the turf rolls.
00:53:48In Spain, spending big hasn't been easy for Becky.
00:53:53Now, on their final evening, there's a last chance to splash the cash at one of Alicante's best restaurants.
00:54:00And there's enough money left to order whatever they want.
00:54:04Right, Amy, what do you fancy?
00:54:06Try a caviar.
00:54:0775 euros.
00:54:09You want to try an oyster?
00:54:10Erm, go on, then.
00:54:11Not surprised there's lobster.
00:54:13£130, I just can't do it.
00:54:16130 euros is insane.
00:54:20It's like two weeks' worth of shopping.
00:54:22It's my council tax bill for the month.
00:54:26If you really want it, it's probably the only time you're going to be able to get it.
00:54:32That is true.
00:54:32Go for it.
00:54:33It did take Amy really, really encouraging me to get that.
00:54:42They ordered the works.
00:54:44First up, Amy's 75-euro caviar.
00:54:49It's not horrible.
00:54:51You like it, see?
00:54:53Amy wanting caviar is something she has said all week.
00:54:56And to be able to give her the opportunity to try something like that, it's just not real life.
00:55:02It's like fairytale stuff.
00:55:04Mission complete.
00:55:05Next, three oysters at six euros a pop.
00:55:08Three, two, one.
00:55:11Do it.
00:55:14I did want my pretty woman moment of trying an oyster.
00:55:19Nope.
00:55:20No, okay.
00:55:21You've got the oil.
00:55:22Yeah.
00:55:23I couldn't get it in my mouth, but quite disappointing.
00:55:29Have some of your drink.
00:55:32Finally, the 130-euro lobster.
00:55:35Wow.
00:55:36Ooh, it smells.
00:55:38Ooh, the ice.
00:55:41Oh, it's delicious.
00:55:43Wow.
00:55:44With drinks and pudding, there's little change from 400 pounds.
00:55:49What an experience.
00:55:51Caviar, lobster, oysters, all in one dinner.
00:56:02All right, last day.
00:56:04We're on the last dregs of the food that we've got.
00:56:06It's been a hell of a week.
00:56:08Lots of ups and downs.
00:56:11All right, guys.
00:56:12The last supper.
00:56:14Going back on my own past.
00:56:16Bringing up things that I sort of suppressed and never thought I'd really have to think about again.
00:56:23Yeah, and I miss all the little luxuries that we have.
00:56:25Being able to pop down to the clubhouse when we're hungry and have our lunch made for us.
00:56:28Like, I wouldn't say we're lucky.
00:56:30Like, I worked hard to be able to have all of that.
00:56:33But I would say that we take it for granted and we definitely could be more grateful for it.
00:56:37No, I think when we get home, we're going to be more grateful for everything.
00:56:41Eating their last food app meal, Adam has a light bulb moment how to help Becky.
00:56:46The time you spend going on the app, finding it, going to the shop, picking up the bagels and coming
00:56:51back,
00:56:51you could have done half an hour of digital marketing and then made enough money to go and buy steaks.
00:56:58Adam's idea is to mentor Becky so she can work part-time advertising businesses online.
00:57:05I'm looking forward to, like, changing her mindset of going from trying to save money, being in survival mode,
00:57:10and getting into, like, thrive mode so she can actually do well for herself instead of being, like, in that
00:57:15scarcity mindset.
00:57:18And in Spain, the electric blinds are coming down one last time.
00:57:23I'm feeling sad about how I have to live in this beautiful house.
00:57:30If there's anything you can want here, you have, like, nearly an unlimited budget.
00:57:36I would love to learn from Adam if he has any thoughts or ideas,
00:57:42especially spending a week in my life, on how to help me.
00:57:47I hope Adam sees that my work is a passion because it's the need that these kids have
00:57:53that actually drives me to do what I do,
00:57:56and it's I'm not intentionally keeping myself in this financial situation.
00:58:05Coming up, when the two families meet...
00:58:08Hello. Hello. You all right?
00:58:10Adam makes Becky the offer of a lifetime.
00:58:13Um, so we feel like that is something that you can do and sort of get out of this, like,
00:58:18rut
00:58:18and be able to, like, live the life that you want to live.
00:58:21What?
00:58:28Day six.
00:58:30And a final morning in the swap houses before everyone returns to their normal lives.
00:58:37Cheers, everybody.
00:58:38Cheers. Happy...
00:58:40Happy experience.
00:58:42I'm feeling sad about how I have to live this beautiful house
00:58:49where I can finally brush my teeth with mummy
00:58:52without having to squeeze in for the sink.
00:58:55Becky's been inspired by the week to think about a better future.
00:59:00I would love to get to a position where my house was all done to my taste,
00:59:07um, no debt, and having enough income just to be at a place like that where I don't have to
00:59:13worry every second.
00:59:14And if I ever got to a point where I didn't have to check my banking up every morning
00:59:17when I woke up, that would be delightful.
00:59:23Oh, I'm looking forward to going home now.
00:59:25Oh, me too. I can't wait.
00:59:28I'm looking forward to meeting the family now and having a, like, chat about how they've experienced our life in
00:59:34Spain.
00:59:34Yeah, me too.
00:59:36Let's go.
00:59:38Becky and co. make the journey back to England,
00:59:41where they've organised to meet Adam, Jamie, and Eva at a hotel.
00:59:50Hello!
00:59:52How are you? So nice to meet you.
00:59:55How are you?
00:59:56Nice to meet you.
00:59:57Are you OK? And you?
00:59:58It's my lovely home.
00:59:59Hello.
01:00:00Oh, my God, your home is so amazing.
01:00:03Oh, thank you so much.
01:00:04How are you?
01:00:05Honestly.
01:00:07Um, so why do you have saucepans that don't work on your hob?
01:00:12Oh, because half of it isn't induction, half of it is.
01:00:14We wasn't half of it.
01:00:17Honestly. Oh, my life.
01:00:20Yeah, yeah.
01:00:21How funny.
01:00:22Oh.
01:00:22Well, we had the same problem, because we couldn't figure out the gas.
01:00:25What did you think of Amy's bedroom?
01:00:26It was a little different. It was smaller.
01:00:30Very, very well put.
01:00:32How did you get through with all of my teddies?
01:00:35Because I have a massive hammock.
01:00:37It wasn't bad.
01:00:39It's just every time I moved my head up, my head would touch it.
01:00:42You didn't take that to cuddle at night.
01:00:45LAUGHTER
01:00:47Immersing themselves in Becky's life, Adam discovered she's had to borrow over £2,000 just to keep on top of
01:00:55the food bills.
01:00:56Yeah, so we met Beth and Kirsty.
01:00:59OK.
01:00:59And they nearly had us in tears telling us about your stories.
01:01:05They were lovely.
01:01:06So we see that you had some debts that are just looking like they're just...
01:01:10Mounting.
01:01:11Mounting up.
01:01:13So we're going to clear your credit card bill for you, so you can sort of start from scratch and
01:01:19catch your breath and not have to worry about that.
01:01:23Oh, thank you.
01:01:25And then we've spoke about this in depth and we feel it's not a problem that you spend too much,
01:01:31you just struggle to earn enough.
01:01:33Yes, I do.
01:01:34But the problem is that you don't have much time because you're so passionate about working with the children and
01:01:38helping them.
01:01:39So one of the things that we have is a £10,000 digital marketing course that we've signed you up
01:01:44for.
01:01:45Oh.
01:01:46Yeah, if you're open to it, I'll personally mentor you and I'll teach you how to get big clients and
01:01:51big businesses on board.
01:01:52And then by leveraging AI, you'll only really have to work one to maybe two hours a day to work
01:02:00for these big companies to make an extra in between £1,000 and £5,000 a month.
01:02:05So we feel like that is something that you can do whilst continuing to work with the children and sort
01:02:11of get out of this rut and be able to live the life that you want to live.
01:02:16That's amazing.
01:02:17Thank you so much.
01:02:18I'll bite your hand off.
01:02:19I will be your best student.
01:02:20Oh, my goodness.
01:02:21Thank you so much.
01:02:23No worries at all.
01:02:25And there's more to come.
01:02:26Adam's so inspired by Becky's work.
01:02:29He has a plan to make a real difference to Essex teens.
01:02:33And then also we want to set up like a sponsorship package for children that you help from your school
01:02:41to get apprenticeships.
01:02:43So just like I had like when I was 17.
01:02:46So we want to do that for children from your school.
01:02:48Oh, wow.
01:02:50And then what that means is that they'll be able to earn while they learn.
01:02:54So they can earn up to £15,000 per year by working whilst they're learning how to be like a
01:03:00trade or in like a profession.
01:03:03That would absolutely change their lives.
01:03:07So last but not least, of course, we have not forgotten little Amy.
01:03:14So we have a little surprise for you here.
01:03:16We have managed to get you into a very famous dance school in London.
01:03:25Where are you going to go to, um, yeah, film inspired workshop that we definitely hope will help you in
01:03:32your future career.
01:03:40We heard that you are a little performing star, that you love performing and dancing, everything.
01:03:46So we think this is a very good opportunity for you.
01:03:50How amazing is that?
01:03:51It'll be so exciting.
01:03:53You'll be like a professional.
01:03:56Also, there's one little, there's another surprise, but it's not here.
01:03:59It's at your house.
01:04:00Oh.
01:04:02You are welcome.
01:04:04I hope you enjoy it.
01:04:06You dance your heart out, okay?
01:04:07Yeah?
01:04:10After a week that's had a big impact on both families, finally, it's home time.
01:04:16Oh, my God, it's so good to be home.
01:04:19The sun's shining.
01:04:21Oh, look, they've left us a gift and a note.
01:04:27Oh.
01:04:28Oh, it was a real experience, a real eye-opener.
01:04:32Um, definitely made me appreciate what we have.
01:04:35Yeah.
01:04:36So, um, uh, yeah.
01:04:38Happy to be home is an understatement.
01:04:41Can't wait to get stuck back into work and, uh, yeah, and help Becky achieve some of her goals.
01:04:49Let's go.
01:04:52Waiting back in Essex is the result of a £2,000 garden transformation.
01:05:00Oh, wow!
01:05:02Oh, wow!
01:05:04Well, you best give it a test drive.
01:05:06It's a total makeover for Amy.
01:05:09This turned a dangerous backyard into a dream playground.
01:05:15I was not expecting all of this.
01:05:17This is next level, like, yeah, so much.
01:05:21I can't, I can't tell you how much this is going to change our lives.
01:05:28And the opportunities that they've given us and me, I'm going to grab 100% with both hands so I
01:05:36can improve the quality of our lives forever.
01:05:40Next time.
01:05:41Wow, this is huge.
01:05:44No carpet on the stairs.
01:05:45I don't think I've ever seen this much money in one place.
01:05:50That's going to be 975.
01:05:52Wow, I'm sweating.
01:05:54I think we've really got a problem.
01:05:56This is a massive eye-opener to how other people live.
01:05:59I want them.
01:06:01Now.
01:06:01No, don't be rude.
01:06:02You're living the life right now.
01:06:32You're living the life right now.
