00:00This week we're in London where our designers are doing up spaces at The Passage,
00:06a homelessness charity that provides support and 43,000 meals a year.
00:12So chef, what do you want me to do? I can maitre d', I can sprinkle, I can stir.
00:18I'm sure you can, Alan, but right now I need 1,000 potatoes prepared fast.
00:22More chipping, less chatting.
00:241,000 potatoes? I'm gonna need backup.
00:28Oi!
00:32Right, start sanding those spuds.
00:35Welcome to Interior Design Masters.
00:38Eight designers remain as they compete for a life-changing prize to partner with Next
00:45to launch their own homeware collection.
00:48Last time, they stormed a castle.
00:53I'm gonna knock out all the competition with this.
00:55And transformed hotel bedrooms.
00:58It's a big old wall.
01:00Sophie created the perfect loveness and one standout space.
01:05It was romantic, it was updated, it was modernised.
01:08Thank you very much.
01:10Duran's lack of wardrobe.
01:12We've lost out a little bit on the practicality in service to surrealism.
01:16And Emily's focus on her artwork.
01:19I've done a crown for Made Mario.
01:21Saw them on the sofa.
01:23I need you to let go of your identity as an artist and then allow yourself to become a designer.
01:30But it was Frankie's busy bedroom.
01:32It's a bit of a visual overload.
01:35That saw her check out of the competition.
01:37I'm just super disappointed, but this isn't the end, it's just the beginning.
01:52This week we're designing for a homeless charity in London.
01:55It's completely different to anything I've ever done before.
01:59Redesigning a space for someone that's homeless can actually build a bit of confidence in them and be the space
02:04to belong.
02:04If our designs can help to facilitate that, then that's going to be a tremendous reward for all of us
02:10as designers.
02:12Last week I visited the sofa.
02:15It was my second time.
02:18I think I was pulled up because Michelle can see that I really do want to learn.
02:21I've got potential and I can do this.
02:26Hi gang, how are you?
02:28Hello.
02:30Well done for making it to week three.
02:35You've officially passed that, oh this is awkward, I've gone home too soon stage.
02:41Now this week's challenge is a biggie.
02:44Not just because it's tough, but because of the huge difference your designs are going to make to people who
02:50really need them.
02:52In London, Victoria is The Passage, a sanctuary for people experiencing homelessness.
02:58For over 45 years it's provided free meals and safe shelter with the support of volunteers and its royal patron,
03:06Prince William, who was introduced to the charity by Princess Diana.
03:10Today The Passage aims to prevent homelessness and supports over 3,000 people a year.
03:15It's not just about access to food, showers, clothing.
03:19It's also about getting people into accommodation, getting people into employment, into training and essentially back into society.
03:27And the designers will be doing up four of their meeting spaces, the arts and crafts room, the employment suite,
03:36the group workshop and the wellness mezzanine.
03:40For the first time you'll be working in pairs.
03:45A bit like a tandem skydive for designers.
03:49And Sophie, because you won standout space last week, you can choose your partner first.
03:55Oh, I wasn't expecting this bombshell.
03:58Surprise!
04:00I would actually love to work with Joanne.
04:03OK, lovely.
04:04Right, everyone, you pick a partner you'd like to work with.
04:08Do you want me?
04:08Yeah, I'll go with you.
04:09Yeah.
04:11Yep.
04:12Yes.
04:13Sorry, you've got the worst.
04:15Emily!
04:16I'm going to smash it.
04:19Now, Michelle, you like to put them under pressure, but with this one you've gone full Freddie Mercury.
04:25What do you want to see from our designers?
04:28Well, it's true.
04:29Working in pairs does add an extra dimension to the challenge.
04:32But overall, I really want to see rooms that have a sense of hope for the people that will be
04:38using them,
04:39but also practical solutions for the staff that work there.
04:43At the end, two designers will be awarded standout space.
04:48However, two designers will be going home.
04:51So give it everything you've got.
04:54You've got two days and a budget of £3,000 per room.
04:58We'll see you in London town!
05:07After planning in their pairs, the designers are ready to meet the staff and community members who use the spaces.
05:15First up are Sophie and Duran.
05:18Hello!
05:19Hi!
05:20Who've been given the group workshop.
05:24We use this room for anything and everything, really.
05:28Yeah.
05:28So it needs to be able to have, like, one-to-one meetings, bigger meetings, activities, sometimes dog therapy.
05:35So you need, like, a lot of space.
05:38And what about any big problems that you want us to address?
05:41We do a lot of packaging here.
05:43A lot of donation comes into the passage.
05:45So what would you guys think about maybe building a packing table?
05:49Would that be helpful?
05:50Yes.
05:51That would be perfect.
05:52Yes.
05:52Once your environment is well-kept, it affects the mood.
05:56Absolutely.
05:57We want to come in and feel relaxed and enjoy our learning sessions.
06:02Yeah.
06:02I think we've got you.
06:04Yeah.
06:06It's a challenge, but I think we've got some clever ideas up our sleeves.
06:10And I'm excited for us to work together.
06:11I think we'll be proud of this space.
06:13Woo!
06:15Johnny and Leah have the employment suite.
06:18Hiya.
06:18Johnny, nice to meet you.
06:19Where homeless people are helped back into work.
06:23This is where we meet our passage community, whether it's training, employment, volunteering, etc.
06:29Nice.
06:29So their journey begins in this room.
06:31Their journey begins.
06:32Yeah, yeah.
06:32Is there necessarily like a feeling that you want people to have when they come into this room?
06:36Well, we want people to feel safe.
06:38We want it to feel welcoming and friendly and inclusive.
06:42Definitely important.
06:43So that's really important.
06:44We normally work as a team on a table and we do like that, but we still need a space
06:50for privacy with the clients when we're doing the one-to-one.
06:53And then in terms of colours, maybe some yellows, a nice camming blue.
06:58That sounds perfect, actually.
07:00Yellows and blues.
07:01The sunshine itself.
07:02Yeah.
07:04We're hoping to achieve a more motivational space.
07:09We really want, one, that they want to come and work there, two, they want to inspire others.
07:13And also to kind of get them into a really good start at the beginning of their journey.
07:17And I feel that room, once we're finished with it, is going to be...
07:25This is such a lovely space.
07:27Ben and Kate have the wellness mezzanine.
07:30It looks like it gets used for a lot of different things.
07:32It's one of the main communal areas we've got here.
07:35Most people coming in off the street, they need food showers and they kind of just want to rest.
07:40So they need a bit of a quiet space.
07:42But we also have, like, the client computers up here.
07:45We run groups and activities.
07:46Fitness.
07:47The fitness group do their exercise up here.
07:49It's definitely a multifunctional area.
07:51Yeah.
07:51And then if it gets super cold, we'll open for a night shelter and people will sleep up here.
07:57What do you think the main challenges are with this room?
07:59I would say the noise from downstairs.
08:02Yes.
08:02It can be really difficult when you do have a group running.
08:04So everything we're putting in hopefully will help reduce the noise.
08:07Yeah.
08:08Oh, that sounds really good.
08:09Yeah.
08:09Yeah.
08:10The space, it's multifunctional, but everything needs to be moved out of the way.
08:14So the room's asking for a lot.
08:16Yeah, they're just.
08:18And Emily and Ajit have the arts and crafts room.
08:22Someone's journey of recovery is about processing some of the experiences that have happened to them.
08:27And by focusing on something creative, it really starts that reintegration into a community.
08:31So what currently doesn't work for the space?
08:34I think at the moment it's a little bit messy.
08:37There's not that much space to store a lot of our stuff.
08:41The kitchen area is quite outdated.
08:44It would just be nice to have like a brighter, cleaner room.
08:49I think there's a bit of extra pressure on us this week, just given our experiences.
08:52I'm a trustee for our homelessness charity.
08:54Emily being an art teacher and going into spaces like this.
08:57I understand how important these spaces are and it's actually quite like a dream to design one of these spaces.
09:05I can't afford for this to go wrong and I'm not even thinking about it.
09:10Right.
09:11Let's get our thousand cushions out the back.
09:14With designs locked down, it's time to put plans into action.
09:19Is this the fabric for the seating?
09:21Possibly.
09:24There's a lot in here.
09:25I can't.
09:26Each team has two carpenters and a decorator to help.
09:31Hi.
09:32Hello.
09:33Morning.
09:34So welcome to the wellness mezzanine.
09:36Can you feel the calm?
09:37Well, maybe.
09:38It's calm at the moment anyway.
09:41Yeah.
09:41We're going to try and break this down into five different areas, so...
09:45Six.
09:46Six, all right, yeah.
09:48Ben and Kate's six zones will be divided into an office with an upcycled floating desk and sofa, a library
09:56reading nook and shelving with semi-arch dividers, a relaxing yoga and meditation space, a private one-to-one alcove,
10:05a dining space for up to 12 people, and a lounge which doubles as a sleeping area on cold nights.
10:12They'll display clients' artwork up the stairs, and a wave pattern will encircle the space, including a new plywood wall
10:20along the railing.
10:21Each of the six zones will be denoted by a different earthy colour on both the walls and floor.
10:26Should we do 250, just to make it a nice, even number?
10:30I don't think any bigger than that.
10:32We're just marking out the zones, making sure we've got enough space for everything, and also so we can clearly
10:38see visually what it's going to look like.
10:41Oh, yeah, they're definitely big enough, absolutely.
10:42They're definitely big enough.
10:43Yeah, yeah.
10:44Well, I think we're happy.
10:48As Ben and Kate get to work dividing up their multiple zones...
10:52..it's like my son's room.
10:53All I ever find is socks.
10:56Yeah, man.
10:57It's the work of a madman.
11:00Sophie and Duran are focusing their attention on one huge build for the group workshop.
11:06A lot of this room is used for storing donations, so we've got a kind of L-shaped unit.
11:12The big build, the monster of the room, is this huge partition with loads of storage.
11:16I hope that it doesn't feel intimidating when you walk into the room.
11:20Instead, I want it to encourage you to go round and actually find the other area of the room.
11:25There's a lot of wood needing for this.
11:27Have you got enough?
11:28I hope so.
11:31Duran's three-metre-high unit will include a generous counter for packing donations and plenty of shelves and cupboards for
11:38storage.
11:39She's using a sustainable OSB wood, which she's highlighting in an electric blue.
11:44This will be softened with blush pink walls and a cornflower blue ceiling.
11:49Onto it, she's adding the passage motto, running it down the wall.
11:54Sophie's in charge of the modular upholstered bonkette seating, which will include hidden storage.
11:59She's layering it with cushions and adding a scalloped rug to create a homely cosy feel.
12:05And she's upcycling free coffee tables to create a tiered packing station for donations.
12:12Yay! My vision is coming to life!
12:15The packing table is coming along nicely.
12:19She is a bit wobbly at the minute, but we're putting some extra reinforcement in so that she'll be solid.
12:24The last one on top again?
12:26The last one on top with the table top.
12:28So something like this.
12:28Oh, my God, it's going to work!
12:31Yes!
12:32Yes!
12:34In the arts and crafts room...
12:36Oh, I only drink a metal margarita.
12:38Ajeev's also shaking things up with some repurposing.
12:42I've got six of these units. I've got them all second-hand.
12:45Emily and I have played on our individual strengths, so Emily's led on colour and texture.
12:49And I've taken responsibility for the furniture that's going to be multifunctional and configured as people need it to.
12:54So there'll be a piece of plywood here varnished, another varnished piece of plywood, which will be on hinges.
13:00So then when you lift it up, it forms like one long table and that'll be like the individual workstation.
13:04Yeah, these shelves have definitely seen better days.
13:07And teammate Emily is reorganising the messy art storage cupboard.
13:12And at the moment, this isn't working for the clients.
13:15We're going to make that better.
13:17We've got art drying, so it's like you can hang sculptures to dry, you can put your paints in the
13:22drying rack.
13:23And again, it's all adjustable.
13:24If I can make their life, like, easier by two minutes, then, you know, it's the least I can do.
13:33Seeing that, I'm like, this shelf is so wedged in.
13:37We might have to keep that one where it is.
13:41Emily's cupboard will be organised into an area for storing materials and drying artwork.
13:47She's chosen to colour drench the room with calming peach and orange tones, and she's ombreing these colours on the
13:54far wall.
13:55She's in charge of revamping the kitchen in soft green and terracotta, and she'll vinyl wrap the countertop.
14:03Ajit's multifunctional furniture will include a modular bench,
14:07three backlit wall-mounted cabinets to display artwork,
14:11and his upcycled modular workstations.
14:15But the pièce de résistance will be Emily's own sculptures,
14:19giant papier-mâché pencils which she will hang around the room.
14:26It's, like, sorting out the storage cupboard. Stressful.
14:29And now I'm treating myself to half an hour of papier-mâché, and it is, like, art therapy.
14:34And this is the nibs of the pencils that I'm making.
14:38If you can't do papier-mâché in an arts and crafts room, when can you do papier-mâché?
14:49I'm so excited to be here in London to check on the designers.
14:53It's a bit of a different vibe to Brian, so I thought I'd fit in with the locals.
14:57Soy 09 variables.
15:18Emily! Alan!
15:19Oh, my love. Look at these giant pencils.
15:23Do you like them?
15:23I love them. They're amazing.
15:26How'd you make them?
15:28Sewage pipe.
15:29Sewage pipe?
15:31I thought you'd changed your perfume.
15:35What have I told you about paper mache?
15:38Because one of Michelle's criticisms of you was,
15:40you're this fantastic artist with this amazing mind,
15:44but you need to park that and be an interior designer first.
15:47Are you getting it right this week?
15:49Absolutely. I looked at the brief, I looked at what they needed,
15:52I addressed that first, then did the art.
15:54What made you think, you saw a sewage pipe and went,
15:57they'd make a great pencil?
15:59Well, I've been designing all week, so I went to cheer myself up,
16:02I went to the hardware store, I saw these...
16:05We have very different lifestyles. I go there to get depressed.
16:09So you went, I'm going to go to a hardware store
16:11and I'm going to buy some poo pipes.
16:13Well, I was like, they look like they could either be paintbrushes,
16:16pencils, pens.
16:17Yeah.
16:17Just put a bit of paper mache on the end.
16:20Voila, you've got a pencil.
16:21OK, great.
16:22I can't wait to tell Michelle how inspirational this place is.
16:26Do you know what?
16:26I'm going to write her a giant postcard.
16:29Can I borrow this to HB?
16:30Of course you can.
16:31Thanks, love.
16:31See you soon.
16:32See you, bye.
16:33Have you got a sharpener?
16:35Mm.
16:38Just make that curve really long.
16:41We are marking the wave out.
16:44We're going to paint the zones on the walls.
16:47The top half's going to be like an off-white and then each wave's going to be a different colour.
16:52Waves, to me, I instantly feel calm by the sea.
16:55They're not like a straight structure.
16:57There's not sharp edges.
16:58So they're quite soft curves.
17:00I got this.
17:02I got it.
17:04Ben and Kate will continue the waves along the railing.
17:07At the moment, all these rails are obviously all open, so the sound just comes straight up and straight through.
17:12So hopefully with these, we get a nice curve feel.
17:16By enclosing their space with plywood panels.
17:19Yeah, coming on the wave.
17:20Yeah, exactly.
17:21You're going to have the wave go all the way through, so it's nice and calming, basically.
17:24As long as when they're sat down, the sound isn't right in their ear, I think that's a win, really,
17:31for that space.
17:34Hi, Kate.
17:35Oh, hello.
17:36So listen, firstly, what the hell is a wellness mezzanine?
17:40So this is a multifunctional space.
17:43This area here will be like a chill out, but the lots of people play some games, a bit of
17:47yoga in the back, a reading.
17:50How do you approach that, though?
17:52Because there's a million and one things that can be happening up here.
17:56How can you possibly appease everyone, you know, and Michelle?
18:00So we've really had to think about, can everything be moved out the way?
18:04But everything needs to be zoned and quiet, and we are in a mezzanine that's open.
18:09So we've put these boards and we've stuck some acoustic panels to the back of them.
18:13Oh, what, these things here?
18:15Ben, shall I check to see if it works?
18:17You can go ahead and check.
18:18OK, wait there, let's see.
18:23Can you hear anything?
18:27Did you hear that?
18:29No, didn't hear a thing.
18:31Result?
18:31Great.
18:32OK.
18:36It's halfway through day one.
18:42This looks wicked.
18:44Yay!
18:46She works!
18:47And with builds going up...
18:49The frame is, like, almost done, which is insane.
18:52The carpenters have got their work cut out.
18:54We've got the bonkette seating that needs building.
18:56We've got a printer storage unit at the back.
18:58The kitchenette unit that needs building.
19:00There's quite a few builds.
19:04They'll be fine.
19:05Paintwork is going from tired to inspired.
19:09Gareth, this is gorgeous.
19:11So I'm doing an ombre on the window wall,
19:15just so it evokes that feeling of sort of release and calm,
19:18but also it's a quick, effective way
19:21of making people feel the ease that I want them to feel
19:24when they walk into the space.
19:26So once we get the bleed in here...
19:28Yeah, to match these two in between.
19:30It's really nice, thank you.
19:34And you're happy with your wiggle?
19:35I'm really happy with the wiggle.
19:37I took control of the colours.
19:39I wanted it to be a calming space,
19:41so using earth tones can be really relaxing, cosy.
19:45Nothing more calming than the green.
19:48And is your bum right behind me?
19:50It's right in your eyes.
19:51I do recognise.
19:53While Kate goes calm and earthy...
19:56Oh, my God.
19:58Sophie, you need to look at this.
20:00Duran's going bold.
20:02I like to work in colours of three,
20:03so the ceiling is in a cornflower blue
20:06and the walls are in a shrimp pink
20:08with an accent colour of ultramarine.
20:10Oh, yeah, I'm excited. You like it? Love it.
20:12When you're looking at colour psychology,
20:14they just make you feel really uplifted and peaceful and tranquil,
20:17but also help you with productivity,
20:19so it's kind of what we need that room to do.
20:21And in their basement employment suite...
20:24I absolutely love the yellow.
20:26Leah and Johnny's colours are having to work hard.
20:29It looks warm and it looks sunshine.
20:31Inviting. Yes.
20:32Everything she wanted.
20:34Boom.
20:35Colour theory was really important for this design.
20:38Obviously, it's in the basement, there's not a lot of light,
20:40but the space had to be welcoming, it had to be inspiring.
20:44So yellow is such a happy colour,
20:46then orange is energetic and motivational,
20:49and then blue is very calming
20:51in case people feel a bit nervous coming into the space initially.
20:55Leah's happy yellow will flood the room
20:58and she's adding a cork texture to the far wall with pops of colour.
21:03Johnny has completely changed the layout of the space,
21:06moving the employees' desks into the middle
21:09and Leah's sandwiching it with giant orange circles
21:12on the ceiling and the floor,
21:14over which she's hanging a dramatic moss and floral lighting feature.
21:19She's adding a geometric lino flooring to the raised entrance
21:22and Johnny's creating a waiting area
21:25with corner bonkette seating,
21:27a cable reel coffee table,
21:29as well as adding a tea-making station.
21:32For the client and employee meetings,
21:34Johnny's designed three bright and cheery zoned booths.
21:39Johnny came up with this amazing idea
21:41to have some booths in the corner
21:43with some kind of nice small arches.
21:45Oh, it looks so good,
21:46especially like off the blue frame where that is.
21:48Yeah, that looks so nice.
21:50This is where they'll have one-to-one meetings with clients
21:52or maybe a meeting that needs to be a bit more private.
21:55And then one of the other booths
21:56is for a bit of a more casual conversation,
21:58away from your desk.
21:59And Johnny isn't the only one using arches to zone his space.
22:03You never have too many arches, can you?
22:05The arch is basically to partition the wall permanently
22:09because obviously all our stuff in our room
22:10has to be modular, has to be moved out of the way.
22:12As obviously we need all the floor space we possibly can get,
22:15the arches are going to be fixed to the wall.
22:18But not to be so big that they are blocking anything.
22:22Yeah. You can still move everything around.
22:24One arch. Looks fabulous.
22:27Does this look crazy?
22:29And while Duran's epic room divider is still under construction...
22:33Right, let's have a look.
22:38Don't you dare it!
22:39..she's made a start on her giant lettering.
22:42I'm actually bringing in some typography,
22:44so I've cut out my own stencils
22:46and I will be taking it down all the way from the ceiling
22:49and using their slogan,
22:50which is everyone deserves a space to call home.
22:53You've picked quite a lot of words.
22:55Mate, there's so many words after this.
23:00Day one of the passage is drawing to a close.
23:04So get it cut and then I'll chase you with the roller.
23:06Emily and Ajit joined forces
23:08to finish his upcycled workstation.
23:11Speed painting with Emily.
23:13We're just setting the pace a little bit higher.
23:16Working with Ajit, we've managed to ground each other.
23:20Look how quick that's taken us
23:21and help one another
23:23and we've really levelled out each other.
23:26I hope.
23:30It's the leg for me
23:31and someone says that he can't do yoga.
23:34And Ben's zoning the last bit of flooring.
23:38We've done acoustic boards on the railings,
23:41we've got the arches up on the wall
23:43with different zone colours on wall and floor.
23:46How are we going to get out of here?
23:48We're not. We're going to sleep here tonight.
23:50We've stopped here.
23:52My biggest concern is
23:54making sure we stay on track of that to-do list.
23:57I've overstretched.
23:58And just really finishing it off and naming it.
24:03So...
24:03Look at that.
24:05Overall, feeling good.
24:07We've managed a lot.
24:08Simi, to you.
24:10It looks exactly how I envisioned it in my brain
24:12and hopefully Johnny's too.
24:14Fantastic day.
24:15We smashed it.
24:17Is that looking too tight?
24:18Er, I don't know.
24:19Hang on, step back.
24:21I feel frazzled.
24:23At four?
24:24Four between them two.
24:26Stencils have been a bit of a nightmare.
24:27Yeah. Perfect.
24:29Yeah?
24:29Yeah.
24:29I can't see it, but I trust you.
24:31I am getting a bit concerned about time
24:34because Duran's storage is still only partially built
24:38and the carpenters have got quite a lot to do with my seating.
24:41We've got to build the seats.
24:42Yeah, it's quite exciting.
24:43Without seating, there's no point.
24:45No.
24:46Let's go.
24:47Move my paintbrush.
24:49We're so lame.
24:50Come on.
24:52Ah, fire room.
24:58It's day two at The Passage.
25:01Morning, guys.
25:01How you doing?
25:03Good, Drew.
25:03Did we all sleep okay?
25:05All right.
25:06Good.
25:06Because we've got a lot to do.
25:07And there's just 12 hours left.
25:09Plan of action today.
25:11Get the booths finished, number one.
25:13We'd like to get it all finished, I think.
25:14Well, yeah, yeah.
25:17What's the first thing for us to get on with?
25:19Shelving in the office and bookcase in the reading.
25:22And you'll be pleased to know more arches.
25:25Love an arch.
25:29So the zones I'm going to be taking charge of, the blue zone, the lounge area.
25:33Then we've got the red zone over there, the office space.
25:36And then right behind me in the back corner is the green zone, which is the one-to-one area
25:40as well.
25:40I have the reading nook, the quiet dining area, and yoga area.
25:46Lucky there?
25:47A little slanted, but yeah.
25:48Yeah, no, what?
25:49Can I do the height and then I'll limit it.
25:51All right, Cheeky?
25:52Yeah, the shelving's looking really good.
25:54Just a little bit of storage, like lightweights or some towels.
25:59It's going to be a meditation area as well, so I might put a few, like, LED candles on there
26:04to, like, help with the zen.
26:07All right.
26:08One, two, three, up.
26:10Finally, Duran's big build is going up.
26:13Okay, yep.
26:15Lovely.
26:16And then to me, fantastic.
26:18That's it.
26:19Yeah, it's so much bigger, but it looks beautiful.
26:24And also, like, the colours of the wood against the colours in the room, just chef's kiss.
26:30This is our materials unit.
26:32You ready?
26:33Yeah.
26:34Here we go.
26:36When you enter the arts and crafts room, you'll see on the left-hand side our bespoke carpentry.
26:40So that's really focused around our two display units, which will allow the passage and clients to display their artwork.
26:47Yeah, can you sort of start now seeing how the space is going to be used?
26:51I hope you'll like it.
26:54Hello, everyone.
26:55Hello.
26:57Deserves has got two S's.
26:59Don't.
26:59Don't do this.
27:01I've been questioning myself all day.
27:03So, everyone deserves a place to call...
27:07Well, where are we?
27:10Is this it here?
27:10Yeah, yeah, yeah.
27:12Okay, let me see.
27:13Everyone deserves a place to call.
27:16H-O-M...
27:19Phew, thank God that's an E.
27:21Yeah.
27:23That's great.
27:24Everyone deserves a place to call home.
27:27So, this is the charity's slogan.
27:29Oh.
27:29Yeah, and I want it to do something special that really creates a sense of home in the space.
27:34Well, I'm already feeling uplifted.
27:37I really am.
27:38And do you know what?
27:38You never know.
27:39Everyone deserves a standout space.
27:43Yes.
27:43Oh, my gosh.
27:44That would be amazing.
27:44Pop that up there as a subliminal message to Michelle.
27:47She might fall for it.
27:49See ya.
27:52Now the carpenters are freed up from Duran's divider.
27:55$450 from ground to cushion.
27:57Mm-hmm.
27:57$500 from...
27:59Yes.
28:00There to there.
28:00Yes.
28:01They can start on Sophie's seating for the workshop meeting area.
28:05The client specifically asked for something that was easy to reconfigure if they needed to.
28:10Obviously, the room is used for a lot of different things.
28:13For staff meetings, dog therapy sessions, barber appointments, having seating that can be moved around was really important.
28:21And the cushions haven't gone crazy, haven't gone full Sophie at all.
28:26No leopard print.
28:27We've gone for a rich buttermilk colour, which is going to look lovely with the overall theme.
28:34Hey there, guys.
28:35How's it going?
28:36We're getting there.
28:37I've started on the bench.
28:38Yeah, it's just getting it knocked out now, is that what I mean?
28:40Yeah.
28:41So we're building our sofa seating that will have under-seat storage.
28:45But this will hopefully just pull out and configure however you wish for whatever activity.
28:51Sweet.
28:52OK, Leah.
28:54Beautiful.
28:56And Johnny's also configuring comfy seating.
28:58Just so precise.
29:00For the corner of the employment suite waiting area.
29:03So we got some scrap foam from our local scrap store, and they had just, like, offcuts.
29:08So I'm going to mount this on a ply board, spray it down, and then cover it in wadding and
29:13cover it in the fabric.
29:15These are chair beds, sofas.
29:19They're pretty modular.
29:20And while the other designers are building bespoke...
29:23When people are here, obviously, in emergency cases, they need beds.
29:27So, obviously, these folding out into beds is such a good idea.
29:30Ben's bought new for his lounge zone.
29:32They undo the buckle, and then they just simply just throw out like so, and then you have your bed
29:40as well.
29:41It's halfway through day two.
29:45These are for the mural.
29:47I decided to make these out of plaster to make them really textural, and if it's slightly imperfect, I actually
29:53think that adds something to the space.
29:55And the designers are adding softness and texture where they can.
29:59Oh, that's good, actually.
30:00These are the cork tiles that are going to go on the wall all the way along.
30:04How are you going to hold all of these?
30:05This is obviously the correct way to measure things.
30:07And that looks so precise.
30:09Just stay there, Leah.
30:10I'm going to go get a cup of tea.
30:11I'll be back in a minute.
30:12All right.
30:12See you later.
30:13Yeah.
30:13Bye.
30:14We chose this cork tile, which is super easy to apply.
30:18And we're going to leave tiles out of the wall, and we're just going to add in the pops of
30:23colour that we have in the room, just to break it up.
30:26So then I guess the question is, how many do we miss out?
30:29I think it's like an odd one here and there.
30:32Also, cork is great because it's an office.
30:33They need to pin all their notices to the cork tiles as well.
30:38So I'm thinking arches to continue the arches, please.
30:41More arches.
30:42More arches.
30:43We love an arch.
30:44With their six zones divided, Kate is adding a bookshelf to her reading nook.
30:49Not that.
30:50Really, really happy with the bookshelves that I've got in the reading nook.
30:53One, because we got to reuse them.
30:55They look absolutely amazing.
30:57And also, I've decided to add lighting into the arches of the bookcase in, just to make it really cosy.
31:04Yay!
31:05Love it.
31:06Can we take these off?
31:08Leah is also adding a lighting feature above their central desk.
31:13Yeah, they're just rubbery.
31:13Just cut them.
31:14Just cut that with a knife.
31:15Should we wait until we've done the framework and be sure we don't need them?
31:18We can leave them.
31:19Food for thought.
31:21So, obviously, as to not to offend any of our decisions when we want to, like, challenge something, we would
31:28just be like, food for thought.
31:30Woo-hoo!
31:32It seems like a nicer way of just being like, eh, I hate this.
31:35Let's reconsider.
31:38So, this is going to be the light fixture.
31:41That we're going to suspend the bulbs from.
31:45I'm just going to use some artificial moss, and this will be wrapped round the frame.
31:53Hi, Leah.
31:54Hi, Alan.
31:55How are you?
31:56Yeah, great.
31:57Oh, I love kale, too.
32:00Got to get your greens in in the day, don't you?
32:02Yeah.
32:02Power smoothie to start you off.
32:04Mmm, yeah.
32:05And what's it like working with Johnny?
32:07Because as designers, when you're working with another designer, if you don't like something they've come up with, you have
32:14to be brave and say, I don't actually agree with you.
32:17We've had many of those, but me and Johnny have a nice phrase that we say when that happens, that
32:23it means the other person hates the other idea.
32:25Oh, what is it?
32:26So, we go, food for thought, and that basically means, I don't like your idea.
32:31Yeah.
32:31Let's think about it another way.
32:34Upstairs in the wellness mezzanine.
32:37I'm really pleased with that.
32:38Kate is getting to grips with some nifty storage for her yoga area.
32:43This is a pegboard, so you can put your yoga mats, you can hang skipping ropes off it or put
32:49weights on it.
32:50If there is a one-to-one going on, this can be moved between the two zones just to give
32:55it a little bit more privacy.
32:57Bloody looks amazing, if I don't say so myself.
33:01Emily and Ajit's art room is the only space which includes a kitchen.
33:05I've taken on the kitchen, which has been really interesting because I never knew anything about kitchens before.
33:11The client requested a modern, clean, upstate kitchen that people want to use.
33:16And with this grout pen, this is bringing in that warm terracotta that I've incorporated within the room.
33:25It's going down.
33:27And she's using a terrazzo-style vinyl for a cheap yet instant update to the worktop.
33:32Terrazzo is, like, it's just a joyful material.
33:36We're in the arts and crafts room.
33:37We're trying to promote creativity.
33:39And for me, I just find, like, material is, like, energetic, but it's also, like, smart.
33:44This reminds me of at school when you wrapped your exercise books in it for apparently no reason whatsoever,
33:50apart from to prep you to vinyl wrap a kitchen work surface.
33:54For my first kitchen, I'm so impressed with it.
33:56While Emily's wrap has worked a treat...
34:02Erm...
34:02Super thought.
34:03Leah and Johnny's vinyl is a sticking point.
34:06What do you not like about it?
34:08The finish?
34:09Because I won't be offended.
34:11Yeah, and that's not a shade thing to you.
34:14I'm more thinking it looks like we're trying to cover it.
34:17But we are.
34:18The vinyl looked like a two-year-old had done it.
34:21But I just think even if the most talented person has done it, it's not an easy thing to vinyl
34:24wrap.
34:25Have you used, like, a water spray, something, before you put it on?
34:29No, because it's sticky.
34:30For me, I just don't want to leave it white.
34:33Erm...
34:34But I think that's kind of my style.
34:36I don't love the white.
34:37It does feel really office-y to me.
34:39Mm-hm.
34:40So, I think we're going to have to think up a plan B.
34:48I can't believe it.
34:50I've just been told a VIP link to the charities swinging by.
34:54I haven't been told who it is, but apparently they're tall, limited hair, and you can't look them directly in
35:02the eye.
35:11Alan, how are you?
35:14Dara, what are you doing here?
35:16Where's Prince William?
35:17Oh, you're obsessed with Prince William.
35:19You've got to let that go.
35:20I've been doing stuff with this charity for years, and they told me you were doing this.
35:23I'm really excited, and I want to see the rooms.
35:25Yeah, sure.
35:25OK, don't look me directly in the eye.
35:35Comedian and presenter Dara O'Brien is an ambassador of the passage.
35:39He's worked in the kitchen, and he puts on comedy events to raise money for the charity.
36:13I've got someone to see you.
36:13Hello.
36:14I've got a storage solution.
36:14I've thought about every kind of drying solution, paper dispenser, put your wet paper.
36:21I'm sorry.
36:22I hear the word storage solution.
36:23I love it.
36:24And we've built this.
36:25You have a little extendable table.
36:27Smooth, weren't it?
36:28That was like a knife through butter, the way that came up.
36:31I became an ambassador this year.
36:33You know, it's the only point of anyone like me doing this stuff.
36:36It's to trumpet the work of others who genuinely do a lot of the things.
36:38This is Duran.
36:38This is Sophie.
36:39Hello.
36:40Are you OK?
36:41It's a lesson you learn in late life that volunteering is a genuine source of great joy.
36:44People should do it.
36:45And then what's this?
36:46This is a chalkboard.
36:48Do you want to have a little?
36:48Write something inspirational.
36:50Come on, something from the heart.
36:53Chop more carrots.
36:56Because the last time I did something here, that was my job.
37:00That was basically the vibe I got.
37:02Ho, ho, ho.
37:02Good for you.
37:03Chop, chop, chop.
37:04All right?
37:04I've really enjoyed seeing what the designers have done with their spaces.
37:07I've never had somebody built a space for me to meet them in.
37:09Yes.
37:10This is nice.
37:11This is part of a journey to restore a full life to people.
37:14Give them homes, give them jobs.
37:16And part of that is restoring joy.
37:18Do you do yoga?
37:19A little bit.
37:20Downward dog.
37:21Downward dog.
37:22Yeah.
37:23Good design like that.
37:24Are you stretching in any way there, Alan?
37:27Are you...
37:28I don't think anything's moving.
37:30That's just been a delight to see.
37:32What do you think of this?
37:33Oh, my gosh.
37:35Check here.
37:36Hey.
37:36I'll tell you now, it's transformed.
37:41I'm drawing up design ideas.
37:43Yeah.
37:43Johnny's found an alternative for Leah's filing cabinet wrap.
37:47Thoughts.
37:48Yeah.
37:48Circles.
37:49This was...
37:49Yeah, yeah, yeah.
37:50Something like that.
37:51Yep.
37:51On the front of the drawers.
37:52Yeah.
37:52We decided in the end that we're just going to go for some circles, which ties into the circle motif
37:58in the room.
37:59In these times, you've got to abandon ship and you've got to just regroup and find something that works better.
38:05Benches are here.
38:07We've just hours left.
38:09Oh, it looks so good.
38:11Look at that.
38:14Sophie's upholstery finally has some seating.
38:17And there's one more coming.
38:19Yes.
38:20Yep.
38:22Kate's created a whole new zone.
38:24This zone is quiet dining.
38:26Downstairs can get really, really busy and noisy.
38:29So, if they come up here, they can come and sit and just eat in a nice, quiet space.
38:35And Leah has plans to cordon off the printer area.
38:39Up the ceiling, yeah?
38:39Yeah.
38:40Okay.
38:40And then they're going to be angled, though.
38:42Can I put it on a baton across the floor?
38:44Ideally, no batons.
38:45Otherwise, it really ruins my vision, you know?
38:48Sorry.
38:49Yeah, it would, wouldn't it?
38:50Away from the door, pointing that way.
38:54These are to hook your aprons on that I've got for cookery and painting.
39:01I am bringing in some artwork into the room.
39:05There's no right or wrong.
39:07It's just colour that you love, hopefully.
39:09And, yeah, just feel it out.
39:12Problem is knowing when to stop.
39:14Just a little bit more pink.
39:16What do you think?
39:17I feel like you might need a big one there,
39:18just because there's quite a lot of space.
39:21I think it's really, really important to reuse the artwork the clients have made.
39:27This is the artwork.
39:28Ooh!
39:30Cute.
39:31Go get it on the walls.
39:33Special delivery for Ajit.
39:36Oh, thank God.
39:37Yes.
39:38Can you bring the O in a little bit closer?
39:41About there.
39:42It looks so cool.
39:45Left one just a tiny little bit higher.
39:46Yeah, perfect, thank you.
39:49Designers, you have one hour to go.
39:53That's my line.
39:56Just sorting out my mug hooks.
39:59Yeah, that's better.
40:00It all gets done.
40:01Everyone works their magic.
40:06Go down, go down, go down.
40:07Oh, beautiful.
40:08Ooh, that's a sexy mirror.
40:13Nice.
40:17We can do a journey.
40:19That should be the opposite.
40:20It needs to be that way, doesn't it?
40:24Time is up.
40:28Done.
40:30We did it!
40:31We did it!
40:32Woo!
40:33Oh, my God, I can't believe it.
40:34It looks so good, I'm so happy.
40:36You did a good job.
40:37Yeah.
40:37I've poured my heart and soul into it.
40:39I feel like...
40:41Well done, mate.
40:43Honestly.
40:43Well done.
40:44No.
40:44Good teamwork.
40:45Let's go.
40:46Let's go.
40:51Michelle has arrived at The Passage with Sophie Robinson.
40:56Oh, I am so excited to get inside this building
40:59because I think this is a real opportunity
41:00for interior design to really change quite a lot of people's lives.
41:05Sophie is celebrated for her use of colour
41:08to bring joy to residential and commercial spaces.
41:12I'd like the designers to use all the tools in their toolkit.
41:14Colour is going to be absolutely essential
41:16to creating the mood and the feeling.
41:19But also, a lot of these spaces are multifunctional,
41:22so we'll be looking for modular solutions.
41:24This could be furniture
41:25that can be easily moved around and reconfigured.
41:28I think this is a really special challenge
41:31because they've also got to uplift and inspire
41:34and give a sense of hope to these people
41:36that are using the spaces.
41:43I am so happy with how the Employment Suite has turned out.
41:48The vision we wanted was for that room
41:50to feel motivational, inspirational,
41:53just a happy place to come and work.
41:55For a lot of people,
41:56it's their first impression of The Passage,
41:58so it was so important to us
42:00that we really created this inviting, welcoming space.
42:03Please.
42:07Wow!
42:08Can I just have a wow moment?
42:10It really hits you as soon as you walk in, right?
42:13They've injected it with joy
42:15with this really punchy colour palette,
42:17created a welcoming space with such a clever layout.
42:22I love as well that they've put all the staff
42:24in the middle, facing inwards,
42:26so you can really imagine this
42:28as a kind of big hive of activity.
42:30I mean, that light-fitting draped
42:31in that lovely ferny greenery is extra.
42:35I like that Leah and Johnny have added
42:37this sort of pause point to the design.
42:40I could make myself a cup of tea or coffee,
42:42and it's just with a little bit of pattern,
42:44a little bit of texture, it's just enough.
42:46What's happening over here, though?
42:48This corner unit just doesn't live up
42:50to what else I'm seeing in the room.
42:51It's pretty poorly made, it's very badly upholstered,
42:54it's not really inviting me into the space.
42:57I'm enjoying this cork-covered wall at the back here,
43:00that lends a nice sense of warmth.
43:01It's a different material, it can double as a pinboard,
43:04but leaving out a tile to allow a pop of colour,
43:08it doesn't work.
43:09It just looks like one of the tiles has fallen off.
43:12I think this is very sensible, this corner.
43:14Every office has this situation,
43:17and I think they haven't overcomplicated it,
43:20but this is a really odd little design statement.
43:23Round, plastic, vinyl, dots.
43:26Just cheapens this whole area.
43:27But you know what, it's actually the little details,
43:29the fact that this wall divider is slightly on an angle,
43:33that really pleases me.
43:34Just notice this on the floor,
43:36this is like a giant vinyl sticker,
43:38leads you around the space,
43:40and into these communal booth areas.
43:42They're sort of like a chatting area,
43:44this might be somewhere where you have a meeting,
43:47somewhere to do paperwork.
43:48But it's nice, though,
43:49cos they're really united with the same design approach.
43:53Really lovely to use the plants,
43:54cos it gives you enough of a sense of a privacy
43:56without closing you in.
43:58They've done something really clever here.
44:00Mm, it's a good balance.
44:01Yeah.
44:04I'm really pleased with my mural with the passage's slogan.
44:08It really resonated,
44:09and I feel like it needed to be celebrated in the space.
44:13I think this week,
44:15knowing that two people are going home
44:16makes your chances of being on the sofa
44:18and leaving the competition much higher.
44:20So, fingers crossed, Michelle likes it.
44:26Ah, kind of wonderful.
44:29The colour palette was Duran,
44:31so you really get that artistic sensibility from her.
44:34It's a very lovely, soft, blushy, plaster pink.
44:37And then they've taken it up a step
44:39with this beautiful powder blue,
44:41but it's this electric ultramarine,
44:45gives it some uplift and success,
44:46cos actually this is a room that is a doing room,
44:49so it can't all just be, like, chilled-out vibes.
44:51I've got lots of space to drop things as soon as I come in,
44:54but I'm not blocking the rest of the space.
44:56And this is, like, quite a nice little sociable area here.
45:00If we were, like, sorting stuff out together,
45:02we could use this.
45:02We're going to be packing and chatting.
45:03Yeah.
45:04The artwork in here is quite, shall we say, minimal.
45:07Tiny little pictures and little frames.
45:09I like the little bits of colour, but...
45:11Mm.
45:12Yeah.
45:15Oh, I love all these textures.
45:18And you've got sneaky extra storage underneath, too.
45:21I absolutely love Duran's treatment of the motto.
45:25We're seeing this mural everywhere around the building,
45:28but they've decided to super-size it,
45:30flip it onto the ceiling.
45:31I just think it looks super cool.
45:33And I love that she's pulled out the word home,
45:36cos that's exactly the heart of everything
45:38that this charity is about,
45:39giving it three-dimensionality and a different colour.
45:42That's the level of attention to detail that I just love.
45:52I'm done.
45:53Thank God.
45:53I mean, it was quite a difficult space.
45:56There was a lot going on.
45:57There was a lot to achieve.
45:59Putting six different colours in a room can sound quite crazy,
46:02but I just hope it ticks everything for the clients and the staff.
46:07This is really nice, how it leads your eye up the stairs.
46:11I love the picture wall.
46:12And I see we've got a kind of squiggly line that's guiding us up, too.
46:16Mm.
46:17It's very soft and organic.
46:19So these first two areas were Ben's responsibility.
46:22We've got office over here and a kind of lounge area there.
46:26Well, I'm drawn here.
46:27I'm loving this.
46:28The colour drench bringing the colour off the walls
46:31and then onto the floor.
46:32It's a really nice grounding colour to meet your eye
46:35as soon as you walk in.
46:36On the other side, these seats fold out to be beds,
46:39so if the weather's ever very, very bad,
46:41the clients can come and sleep up here.
46:44Kate's done this little library area.
46:46This is obviously an attempt at some kind of visual divider,
46:50bringing the arches out of the wall,
46:51but that hasn't worked, has it?
46:53It looks really unfinished and quite awkward.
46:55Now, I'm really drawn to Kate's meditation area.
46:59I mean, I'm wondering how many people
47:00were going to be able to do yoga all in one go.
47:03I think the clever thing is these are on casters.
47:06The planters are on casters.
47:09So, yeah, you could move everything out of the way,
47:11line up your yoga mat.
47:12That's clever.
47:13But then over here, this is Kate's quiet dining area.
47:18I find it very corporate and a bit boring.
47:21Yeah, I mean, this room needs to do some serious heavily lifting.
47:24It's got to be a chill-out place where you can sleep, rest, relax.
47:28There's a workstation.
47:29There's a reading area.
47:30You might want to do some meditation rooms and yoga.
47:32Maybe a one-to-one, and why not have some lunch as well?
47:34I know. I mean, there's so much that is really successful.
47:37I mean, the space has been transformed,
47:38but it's not a huge space.
47:41And so they've tried to employ these designs,
47:43but every little bit, to me, is a little bit compromised
47:46because they're squeezing it all in.
47:57Yeah, I mean, I can't believe we've actually got that done.
48:01Quite a few big, ambitious builds.
48:04The artist inside me is wanting to teach some art in there,
48:08and I'm really, really chuffed with what I did with the space.
48:15It's really joyous, isn't it?
48:17There's no mistaking what this room is for.
48:19Doesn't it just ooze creativity and, like, you just want to make stuff?
48:24Ordinarily, you're shutting all those doors
48:26because you want to hide it all away.
48:27But here, I want to see all the stacks of the drawings
48:31that have already been done.
48:32I want to see the canvases lying on the side.
48:34I want to see the paper that I can pull out.
48:36I mean, this has been really carefully thought through.
48:41I think this is just such a brilliant kitchen mini makeover.
48:45It's like, switch up the worktop, colour the grout,
48:49some good blocks of colour, job done.
48:52It looks a million dollars.
48:53Here we can get a real appreciation of this incredible joinery,
48:57which is not only storing, but also displaying
49:00all the beautiful artwork.
49:02These have come from some very basic storage units,
49:05but they've added tops to them that flip up and down
49:07so they can be folded away.
49:10So that's Ajit using his technical bravado.
49:13Have you noticed that this wall is ombre-ed?
49:16Yeah, that's so beautiful.
49:17It's like a sunrise.
49:18And then over there, we've got this glorious paper-mache pencil
49:22that's also a hanging hook thing for aprons.
49:27So it's beautiful and useful.
49:28Yes, but it's also a pencil as well, so it's relevant to here.
49:31I feel that we've got two designers who've put themselves in this space.
49:36I feel that they've enjoyed it.
49:39Well, we're certainly enjoying being in here,
49:40and that's a sign of a successful design, isn't it?
49:43They're four really good projects.
49:46While Michelle and Sophie deliberate...
49:49Oh, my goodness!
49:51Wow!
49:52The moment has come for the clients and staff
49:54to see their newly transformed rooms.
49:57This is what you call a multi-purpose space.
49:59It's so amazing.
50:01This is so great.
50:02Good morning, guys.
50:03What do you guys think?
50:04Wow!
50:05Oh, my God, this is incredible.
50:07Thanks for sorting out the cupboard as well.
50:10Yeah, there you go.
50:10Absolutely knocked it out of the park.
50:12Well done.
50:13Oh, it just looks so warm and inviting.
50:16So warmly, yeah.
50:17It seems like...
50:17Homely.
50:18Well, I think this is going to be where I see it.
50:22Wow.
50:23Oh, I love this.
50:27Oh, wow.
50:28Hi, guys.
50:30Oh, guys, this looks amazing.
50:34I feel it already, like, it's going to affect clients' behaviour up here.
50:37Like, that's going to impact, like, us as staff.
50:40And I can't wait for clients to see it.
50:41It's going to be amazing.
50:48The designers are back at the studio, and it's time to reveal which team has won standout space
50:54and which pair will be up for elimination.
50:58Oh, here they are.
50:59Come on in.
51:00Take a seat.
51:02Hi.
51:04So, you made it back from the big smoke.
51:07Yeah, just about.
51:08Johnny and Leah, how are you?
51:10Yeah, it's all good, thanks.
51:11I've done something different with my hair.
51:14Do you like it, or is it food for thought?
51:17Food for thought.
51:19Thanks for the compliment.
51:22Listen, I would put all of you through, but these two buzzkills have other plans.
51:28It's Michelle and Sophie.
51:30Woo!
51:34So, who won standout space?
51:38Ah.
51:39Well, there was one design that I think we felt absolutely encapsulated inspiration,
51:45but also gave me all the joys.
51:50Ajit and Emily.
51:53Ah!
51:53Yeah.
51:54Really?
51:56Oh, Emily.
52:00Honestly, Ajit, I can see that your technical prowess with your clever, multifunctional furniture,
52:06you're really starting to nail that.
52:08And Emily, you've listened, you've learnt, you've put it into practice.
52:14This is insane.
52:16Don't you wish you'd done giant poo pipe pencils?
52:21So, who else are you keeping in the competition?
52:23There was one other space that we also felt really embodied the power of design to transform.
52:29So, Sophie and Duran, for your group workshop room.
52:33Well done.
52:37Thank you so much.
52:38So, that does mean that Ben and Kate, Leah and Johnny, I would like to see you on my sofa.
52:44So, for everyone else, congratulations, and we'll see you next week.
52:55I feel like that inside.
52:58I felt quite emotional about it, just because I'm a trustee for a homeless charity.
53:03It did feel like I was helping out a mate, and to then be able to have standout space as
53:08well
53:09just makes it feel like it was a job well done.
53:10I can't believe it.
53:11I'm like, honestly.
53:12Your face.
53:13I'm like, what?
53:14It was for the people that used the room, and now that place is even more special.
53:19Good luck to all of you.
53:21Yeah, thank you.
53:22I need to have a little chat to myself, so hopefully I can explain the decisions that I made, and
53:29fingers crossed.
53:31It may be something to do with all the zones.
53:33Maybe we didn't show enough of ourselves in each other's space, so I look forward to hearing what they say.
53:39So, I'm sad they didn't love it in the way that we did, but they want to learn why and
53:44get a better understanding.
53:46My first time on the dreaded sofa, so feeling quite nervous, but I'm ready to defend, yeah.
53:56So, shall I start with Leah and Johnny?
54:00Many triumphs in your design.
54:02Really brave to have gone with that layout, put those tables in the middle, and I really saw a sense
54:08of both of you, but a very coherent scheme.
54:12I loved, like, the cork.
54:14That was, like, an interesting change of material on that back wall.
54:17But why did you miss some out?
54:18Just as a little nod to, like, a wee bit of playful colourness, which is...
54:24Stop you there.
54:25It doesn't work.
54:26Leaving one out, it's like you didn't order enough.
54:29Right.
54:29Oh, we ordered way too many as well, which is maybe more infuriating.
54:33It's also about finesse, right?
54:35What was that, like, chunky wheelie seating?
54:38Oh, the bonkette thing in the corner.
54:39It wasn't very well made, which, again, fought with the fact that other elements were so beautifully executed.
54:44But in the balance of the whole, because you'd already made the platform into something wonderful with the flooring and
54:51the little coffee station, so you could have just given yourself a break there.
54:54Yeah, and that would have maybe helped with, like, the time management thing.
54:57You'd have had time to put the tiles back on the wall.
54:59Put the tiles back on the wall, exactly, yeah.
55:01Yeah, no, I hear you.
55:01Kate and Ben, your wellness mezzanine, that was a complicated space to work with.
55:06You were actually quite audacious in your ambition to take the colour all the way around the space and then
55:12onto the floor, which I loved.
55:15You had an extraordinary long list of requirements.
55:18We did.
55:19Which, arguably, you accommodated, but I think there was too much going on in there.
55:25Yeah, I just wanted to get it so right for them, but the whole structure was basically just going, have
55:32we done that, that, that, that, that, that, that?
55:33Yeah, we tried to take too much off the client's list instead of actually focusing on what was in the
55:37space.
55:37Yeah.
55:38This is one of the hardest lessons to learn as a designer, that in order to give a client what
55:46they need, sometimes you have to tell them, I cannot give you what you think you want.
55:53Okay, yeah.
55:55And so in trying to do so much, and in the spirit of glorious collaboration, the whole thing got rather
56:03compromised.
56:07But it does mean that, Kate and Ben, you will be leaving us this week.
56:13To go home on this space, I'm really proud, and I'm really thankful for all of the advice.
56:17I'm definitely going to take it on, aren't we?
56:19Absolutely.
56:19I wouldn't have changed my partner, either.
56:21Oh, thanks for sharing your design.
56:25It is good to go home, but you know what?
56:27Before this, I only designed my bedroom, so, like, to be able to get standout space, design a really cool
56:32hotel,
56:33and to design this wellness mezzanine, I mean, I'm leaving on a high.
56:38It's so sad to be leaving, but I'm leaving on a space me and Ben work so hard on,
56:46and for the clients and the staff to be at the way they did when they've seen it, that's really
56:50all that matters.
56:51Miss you, guys.
56:52I'm going to miss you.
56:54It was so hard to send Ben and Kate home this week.
56:57They collaborated so beautifully and really tried to give the client everything that they asked for,
57:04but in doing so, we had just a bit too much compromise.
57:08Next time.
57:10Whoa.
57:11That's a piece of machinery.
57:12The designers join the Royal Navy.
57:15Two, four, six, eight.
57:17We like to decorate.
57:18Yes.
57:19Turning mess decks.
57:21Oh, God, all the shelves falling.
57:23Into morale-boosting spaces.
57:25Yeah, come on.
57:26Yeah.
57:27Go.
57:30And don't miss that on BBC Two next Tuesday at eight,
57:34because here we'd be Eurovision Semi.
57:37Ahead of his centenary, discover a collection of his amazing documentaries.
57:41David Attenborough at 100 on iPlayer.
57:44Also there, new comedy, Life at 40, for some Richard back home with his dad in the return of Only
57:50Child.
57:51We're sizzling next with MasterChef.
