00:04There's a backflip right there. I've never seen a backflip on a skateboard.
00:09I'm Matterzaps and I'm on a mission to explore skateboarding's outside edge.
00:14Hop in as we travel the globe meeting skateboarding's mavericks to find out what skating means to them.
00:39What's going on, people? Here we are in beautiful Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States of America.
00:46And we're going to go pick up Beaver Fleming at the airport in a second.
00:51Together, we're going to go to Woodward Skate Camp because Beaver is a Nitro Circus mega ramp athlete.
00:56And he's going to help me jump the mega, I mean the mini mega.
01:01It's going to be fun. I can feel it.
01:09Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No. It's Beaver Fleming.
01:15Discovered while finishing high school at Woodward U by motorsports legend Travis Pastrana,
01:20Beaver's take on professional skateboarding is pretty unique because he makes a living entertaining thousands as part of a traveling
01:29circus, the Nitro Circus.
01:31Dropping into the biggest, tallest, meanest, most life threatening ramp you've ever seen and clearing a 20 meter gap only
01:39to be thrown well over 14 meters into the air.
01:44That's Beaver's gig.
01:48Here you go, man. We've got a signed deck, man. You guys, you skaters. Caballero, right?
01:53Wow, that's amazing. Thanks so much.
01:55Be safe, man. Good luck with that, all right? Good luck, man.
01:59This goes up on my wall. Yeah!
02:03One man's trash, another man's treasure. Thank you so much for this signed Steve Caballero deck.
02:11Now let's go to Travis Pastrana's house to skate his skate park.
02:27We're skating in Travis Pastrana's house, and he's not here, he's in Europe himself, but just trying to get some
02:33more clips.
02:35Beaver's going wild.
02:41Beaver's going wild.
03:07Beaver's going wild.
03:11I grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee, and what got me into skateboarding was my brother had the
03:15Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 video game. Thought it was the most epic thing ever, and then I was like,
03:20man, I wonder if real skateboarding is as much fun, and my neighbor had a board and ended up
03:24letting me have the board, and I just took it out in the driveway and was hooked instantly and been
03:29basically skating ever since. I was probably like 10 or 11 years old at the time, and it's been
03:34crazy and just such a blessing that literally the same thing I would do as a kid, I'm actually
03:37getting paid for now and making a living riding my skateboard, so it's really cool to see that
03:42happening and be able to live life and travel and do all these incredible things, all thanks to, you
03:47know, being able to ride a skateboard. Now we're in the car, ready to roll into Woodward where this
03:51guy's going to be jumping the Mega Ram. Ay, yikes.
04:07Hey! I로 head back to Goldman Sachs.
04:27Hey!
04:28Come here!
04:28I'm going tooric both high everyone.
04:31Oh!
04:32Hey!
04:33Oh, Bluetooth!
04:34Ah!
04:34Oh, shit...
04:34Oh, my God...
04:36...Oh, my God!
04:36Get there.
04:36Oh!
04:37Yes! Yes! Skate cart!
04:41Yeah, this is the original Woodward that started as a gymnastics camp,
04:45and then, you know, they had the idea to put some investing into action sports,
04:49so that's when they started building. I think they built three skate parks at first,
04:53and they were really, like, the first ones to bring out the foam pits and resi
04:56to really just take it to the next level.
04:58And then Woodward ended up building a mini-mega ramp out here,
05:02and that was really the first kind of public one that you could go to and figure out.
05:07I thought it was going to be much bigger.
05:09It's the mini-mega.
05:11This is actually the first one I ever jumped back when I was 17.
05:14I would come here in the summers as a kid, and...
05:17Uh-huh.
05:17Yeah, and then once...
05:18And then you ended up inventing some tricks, right?
05:20Yeah, yeah, yeah.
05:22Do you think you could show us some of them tomorrow or whenever we get on the ramp?
05:25Absolutely, yeah. And then it's kind of crazy,
05:27because, like, one of the tricks I invented on the Nitro Circus ramp,
05:30which is similar to the mega ramp...
05:32It's twice the size of this one that's here.
05:34Twice the size of this one, but we can still make it work.
05:37But one of those is the finger-flip-back-flip.
05:48That's actually the trick I was doing in the foam pit
05:51that Travis saw and was like,
05:52Whoa, dude, we need to have you on our show, so...
05:55Uh-huh.
05:55Yeah.
05:56Man, so he saw you at the...
05:59At Woodward.
06:00Uh-huh.
06:00And then he was like,
06:01Man, I gotta get this guy on...
06:03On the Nitro Circus traveling show.
06:05Yeah, exactly.
06:06And then it's been seven years that you've been doing it.
06:09Yeah, it's crazy to think, man.
06:11Time goes.
06:22A lot of kids here.
06:24Woo!
06:25Woo!
06:26And this is the morning.
06:28We're gonna do some warm-ups.
06:30And then skate.
06:32Toes down first.
06:34Toes down first.
06:36Nine.
06:37Seven.
06:38Very good.
06:38Shake it out.
06:39Shake it out.
06:40Another way.
07:06Two.
07:07One.
07:08Three.
07:09Two.
07:14One.
07:17Two.
07:18Two.
07:22Two.
07:25Two.
07:26Two.
07:27Two.
07:40usually skaters go out skate streets or skate skate parks or birds but you you got like a
07:48like a circus right it's like a traveling circus yeah the nitro circus i mean it's a really cool
07:53way it's like kind of cool because it's not like a contest like you don't have to land your stuff
07:57but you're traveling with a group of like the world's best action sports athletes and motocross
08:01bmx all that stuff and to be able to be the skateboarder there is really awesome and just
08:06cool to show skating in that aspect as well just get more people encouraged and inspired to skate
08:11and then be able to compete and do things like that is also a passion of mine too so it's
08:15cool to
08:15kind of just be able to do it all you know i think it's kind of like my mindset on
08:19skateboarding there's
08:20no right or wrong way to do it you can skate however you want why just skate vert why just
08:24skate street
08:25like try and mix it all in there together and same with you know what i'm doing in my career
08:30it's
08:30like why just do a contest why not do a show why not do all these different things that there's
08:34so
08:35many things that have been unexplored and so it's like you might as well go and figure out and make
08:39the most of it
08:41here we are at woodward woodward skate camp doing ice bath
09:05i think at the end of the day life's an amazing opportunity skateboarding is an amazing gift and
09:10if we're able to get out of our own way with it let the fear not hold us back but
09:15actually use the fear
09:15to make us smarter and really control what we're doing that's what i think is cool about fear like
09:20when you're in that moment like you're on the mega ramp you're not thinking about anything else you're
09:24just thinking about you skating in that moment and it kind of puts you into that flow state so where
09:28you're not thinking about other things so your focus level is a lot higher you should not be
09:33thinking about other things yeah exactly but that's how it is in life you know you get carried
09:37away with all these different thoughts multitasking all this stuff but if we can just be in that
09:42moment i'm sure you feel it when you're street skating like you're skating that much better when you're
09:46just on your board i think it's just the mentality of using fear not being used by fear
09:59i'm coming beaver
10:18sliding on my knees and i burned the shoelace
10:23but it's so much speed and i'm scared of the big bird wall
10:39i've never seen a backflip on a skateboard
10:49tighten up my trucks a little more
10:51tighten up my trucks a little more
10:51tighten up my trucks a little more
10:54and then do the 30
10:55a classic one usually my first trick i do in the nitro show you take the board smack it over
11:01your head it's a good time here we go
11:13that's called a tomahawk
11:15love you mom
11:24both of my elbows
11:27have like third degree burns on them maybe first degree don't fall down
11:38alrighty let's see if we can get some wings out of this
11:43let's see if we can get some wings out of this
12:13mission completed
12:19what is skateboarding to you
12:22skateboarding to me is just freedom and joy
12:25you know i think skateboarding is so awesome and why i really fell in love with it was because
12:31there was one no right or wrong way to do it
12:33and two you could do it however you wanted to and take it to whatever level you want
13:07there's no one telling you you're going to do it
13:08you have to do this you have to do that you can really take it to where you want to
13:12and i always had that just kind of self-driven mentality of it of like all right let's see
13:16what i can do on this skateboard like this is the device i can use what can i do with
13:21what
13:21i'm given and it's kind of one of the things that taught me as well um just cause and effect
13:27you know if you do a trick right you're rewarded by landing it if you do a trick wrong you
13:31know you
13:32crash and so it's like one of those things it's like super cool and i think it gives you so
13:36many
13:36life lessons and it's awesome too that just the community it brings and just how powerful of a
13:42connector it is no matter where you're at and i'm sure you've found this with traveling if you have
13:46your skateboard instantly you see someone else that's a skater there's a connection there that you
13:50couldn't you can't really describe but it's just so powerful how it connects and i mean like this as well
13:55i mean
13:56you're just a legendary street skater and you just reached out to me because you love skateboarding
14:00as well not just i love your skateboarding yeah which is amazing and i love your skateboarding and
14:05so there's that mutual respect that's there in the skate culture too that i think is really powerful
14:09and um i just love it and especially being at a place here like woodward uh i grew up coming
14:15here
14:15as a kid and just seeing the passion in kids eyes i think it's something that you can do with
14:20passion
14:20and it makes it that much better so a circus life constant danger up there on the mega ramp
14:28beaver is maybe the most hyped skater i've ever met hanging with him has been enlightening because
14:33he's not a typical skater and doesn't seem to want to be he keeps doing his thing against the grain
14:39and found his space like that what did i take from meeting him that it takes courage to be your
14:44own
14:44person all smiles from the guy with one of the most dangerous jobs in skating
