00:00:00Pete, we are so fortunate to live in this glorious country of ours.
00:00:03It's surrounded by so much beautiful water and waterways.
00:00:07Such a massive percentage of Australians live on the coast.
00:00:10It calms, inspires and energises us, doesn't it?
00:00:12Which is why we are so excited to show you through tonight's amazing home
00:00:16because literally all those ideas, it's part of this home's DNA.
00:00:20It has a roofline inspired by a wave which floats above the living areas.
00:00:25Honestly, it's one of many things that will whet your appetite
00:00:27on tonight's Better Homes and Gardens.
00:00:31Tonight, even our tiniest turtles need rescuing from time to time.
00:00:36I think the little creatures are so important.
00:00:38We always talk about the big ones.
00:00:40Find out what all the fuzz is about.
00:00:42Try our peachy dessert.
00:00:44I'm about to make this day a whole lot better
00:00:47by making the best peach tart you're going to see.
00:00:51Have you noticed how our streets are cluttered with parked cars?
00:00:55It's because our garages are full too.
00:00:58I can already see one big problem.
00:00:59Yeah, well, the car doesn't fit, mate.
00:01:03Plus, got a tree that's totally rooted?
00:01:06Charlie's on the case.
00:01:07This is a family show.
00:01:09I'm using a technical term, of course.
00:01:11And Valentine's Day might be long gone,
00:01:14but roses can live on.
00:01:16Today, it's a rose lover's paradise.
00:01:33Well, I'm standing on the bank of a farm dam,
00:01:35and there's a couple of blokes in front of me
00:01:37waiting around in the water,
00:01:38using their hands to look for something.
00:01:41What is it they're looking for?
00:01:45There we go.
00:01:47Got one.
00:01:47Oh, how's that for timing?
00:01:49Beautiful.
00:01:50Looking good.
00:01:52Aha!
00:01:54Well, Shane and Cain,
00:01:56what sort of turtles have we got, boys?
00:01:57This is the eastern long-necked turtle.
00:01:59And are they fully grown at that stage?
00:02:02Yeah, pretty well.
00:02:02Yeah, they can get a little bit bigger than this,
00:02:04but basically these are adult females.
00:02:06So, obviously, you rescue turtles.
00:02:08Do you rescue anything else as well?
00:02:10Oh, look, we don't discriminate.
00:02:11We work with a whole range of wildlife.
00:02:14Come on, such as?
00:02:15Well, including fish and frogs and lizards and snakes
00:02:20and all things that live around wetlands.
00:02:22We started it about a decade ago.
00:02:25Shane and I and our good turtle mate,
00:02:27we all got together,
00:02:29and basically we saw a requirement
00:02:31and a necessity for these animals to be saved,
00:02:33especially in Sydney growth areas
00:02:35where they're doing a lot of new infrastructure,
00:02:37road upgrades, housing estates.
00:02:39It's a wonderful thing to be able to do what you love
00:02:42and get paid for it.
00:02:43So where do you go to release the turtles?
00:02:47Well, we try to find a body of water
00:02:48if it's not going to be impacted in the future,
00:02:50if it's not too far away from where we rescued them from.
00:02:53We've got ourselves a couple of turtles.
00:02:55What happens now?
00:02:56If these guys were injured or unhealthy in any way,
00:02:58we would take them to the vet,
00:02:59and then they'd usually go back to Shane's
00:03:01or a carer's for rehabilitation.
00:03:03Don't tell me you... I'm interrupting you.
00:03:05Don't tell me you've got a turtle hospital at your joint.
00:03:08Yes, I have.
00:03:09He's got a turtle hospital at his joint.
00:03:11That's something I've got to say.
00:03:36I open my mouth and it's all in my face.
00:03:43It must take a lot of time, mate, looking after all of this.
00:03:46It's a full-time job.
00:03:47You were a, what, a fitter and turner, weren't you?
00:03:49Yeah, by trade.
00:03:50OK.
00:03:50Yep.
00:03:51So this is totally different to fitting and turning.
00:03:53It's a completely different thing altogether.
00:03:55Can you give me a random figure
00:03:56as to how many do you estimate are in this backyard?
00:03:58There's 200 to 300 in this backyard.
00:04:02We mainly breed the eastern long-necked turtles
00:04:05and I also breed the Murray short-necked necks.
00:04:07Yeah.
00:04:07What happens to them all?
00:04:09Where are they going to go?
00:04:10Well, I do rehome turtles.
00:04:13Yeah.
00:04:13The baby ones, I'm really fussy where they go to.
00:04:17Yeah.
00:04:17People got to have the correct tank set-ups.
00:04:20Yeah, that's important, I think.
00:04:20And licences and everything else like that.
00:04:23OK, important point.
00:04:24Let's talk about licences.
00:04:25So you've got a licence to cover you
00:04:27from doing all this sort of stuff.
00:04:28Yep.
00:04:29You know, along with Cain, right?
00:04:31You also would have to have a licence
00:04:32to be selling what are Australian native fauna, am I right?
00:04:35Yes.
00:04:35OK, so you have that too?
00:04:37That's a separate thing, yep.
00:04:38Yeah, agreed.
00:04:39That's a totally different thing.
00:04:40Yep.
00:04:40But you have to have that as well.
00:04:41Do those people who take one on board
00:04:43have to have a licence themselves
00:04:45or a permit to keep that animal?
00:04:47Yes.
00:04:48OK.
00:04:48Yep.
00:04:48So it's all well controlled.
00:04:50Both of you, you know,
00:04:52I think what you're doing in the world today
00:04:55is saving the little creatures,
00:04:56and I think the little creatures are so important.
00:04:57We always talk about the big ones.
00:04:59I would like to have a look at some rehabilitation.
00:05:02Of course.
00:05:03Can we have a squiz?
00:05:04Sure, Ken.
00:05:05Lead the way, Macduff.
00:05:14So this obviously had an injury to the shell just here, mate.
00:05:18Where did this turtle come from?
00:05:20This turtle was crossing a road and was hit by a vehicle.
00:05:23Somebody pulled over and collected the turtle.
00:05:25Yeah.
00:05:25And they took it to a vet,
00:05:29and the vet has repaired its shell.
00:05:31Yeah.
00:05:31And they've brought it here just for rehab for a period of time.
00:05:35What's your general advice
00:05:36to people who see an injured turtle on the side of the road?
00:05:40We encourage people to just stop the car if it's safe to do so.
00:05:43Get that turtle into a box, some sort of containment,
00:05:46and just get it to the nearest vet.
00:05:47That's the best thing to do,
00:05:48because the vet will know exactly who to refer it to,
00:05:51or will be able to care for that turtle themselves.
00:05:54This one in there looks like it's been on steroids.
00:05:56It's enormous.
00:05:57What's that one?
00:05:58That is a northern long neck.
00:06:00I guess for the people at home, they don't bite, do they?
00:06:02You take it?
00:06:03No, they don't.
00:06:05They might mistake your finger as food.
00:06:06Yeah.
00:06:07That's probably the only thing,
00:06:08but they're not aggressive or anything like they want to snap.
00:06:10This is a beautiful animal, isn't it?
00:06:12Look at the webbing on the feet.
00:06:13Look at that.
00:06:14So well-equipped to be able to swim.
00:06:17Little tiny nostrils right up here on the very top of the nose,
00:06:19so you can right to the surface of the water,
00:06:21breathe so easily.
00:06:23Tiny little eyes.
00:06:26They're such amazing animals.
00:06:28But what happens to these wild turtles
00:06:30when they've finished their rehabilitation?
00:06:35Let's grab these turtles.
00:06:37Yep.
00:06:38Whoa.
00:06:40Is it technical what you're going to do
00:06:41or are you simply going to pop them in the water?
00:06:43Oh, look, we just place them on the bank
00:06:45and let them wander off into the water.
00:06:46Oh, you put them on the bank?
00:06:47Yeah, we do.
00:06:47Right, oh, well, go for your lives.
00:06:48They know what they're doing.
00:06:49So what do you do, just sort of put them on the edge
00:06:51or put them in the water or what do you do?
00:06:53Just sit them right here on the edge of the water
00:06:54and let them do their thing.
00:07:00Now, that's a bit cleaner water than they've come out of.
00:07:02It's beautiful.
00:07:02Yeah.
00:07:03I love it here.
00:07:03Look at that.
00:07:04Look at that going.
00:07:04How do you feel when you release one into the wild?
00:07:08Oh, look, it feels good knowing that those turtles
00:07:10have come out of a bit of a sticky situation
00:07:12and now they can go off and live their life happily
00:07:15in a picturesque location like this.
00:07:17So hats off to the perrier.
00:07:19It's a great job.
00:07:20I don't know that I ought to be stuck in the mud
00:07:22for four hours at a time,
00:07:23but they seem to enjoy it
00:07:25and the rewards speak for themselves.
00:07:43Honestly, it doesn't matter which way you look.
00:07:46Combining right angles, curves and creativity
00:07:48and master craftsmanship
00:07:50to a level we've rarely seen.
00:07:53Lana, look one is ready for you to see.
00:07:55Oh, my gosh.
00:07:58This is incredible.
00:08:06Living in a busy urban area certainly has its perks,
00:08:10but when it's time to switch off and recharge,
00:08:12you want your bedroom to be your sanctuary.
00:08:15The vibe in that space really does matter,
00:08:18which is why I've designed two DIY bed heads
00:08:20that will instantly elevate your sleep zone.
00:08:23And the best part is they're totally renter-friendly.
00:08:36Knock, knock.
00:08:37Hello.
00:08:38Hey, hey.
00:08:40Hi, Lana.
00:08:40Hi.
00:08:41How are you?
00:08:42Oh, my goodness.
00:08:43I'm so sorry.
00:08:44I just have to.
00:08:45That's OK.
00:08:45I'll give you a hand.
00:08:47I hear that you're struggling
00:08:48with the design of this room a little bit.
00:08:50Yeah, it's...
00:08:51Like, I love the space,
00:08:52but I want to add personality
00:08:55and I can't nail anything to the wall.
00:08:57It all has to be temporary.
00:08:58I really like to have a sort of neutral base,
00:09:01but I want something to pop,
00:09:03whether it's, like, the doona, the pillow, the bed head,
00:09:07just to draw your attention to it.
00:09:09Sure.
00:09:09I can work with that brief.
00:09:10The first thing I need to do, though,
00:09:12is just measure the bed
00:09:13so we get the right size for the bed head.
00:09:17Thanks, Lana.
00:09:18So we want it to just overhang the bed a little bit.
00:09:22I think if we go to about $1,400,
00:09:24so it sits about there.
00:09:26That's great.
00:09:29I've had some MDF cut to suit my measurements
00:09:32and it's been under-coded
00:09:33and I want this bed head to have the look
00:09:35of an upholstered padded one,
00:09:37but they can be quite pricey,
00:09:38so I'm using this very cool pool noodle hack.
00:09:41The first thing I'm going to do
00:09:43is just take a bread knife
00:09:44and cut down the centre.
00:10:02Now, as much as I love the look of pool noodles,
00:10:05they're not quite the height of fashion,
00:10:06so I've chosen this gorgeous block-printed fabric
00:10:09to go over the top of them.
00:10:11The key here is to mark out
00:10:13the centre point of your backboard
00:10:17and also iron in a crease
00:10:20in the centre of your fabric
00:10:21and that way the fabric will stay
00:10:24the right way with the pattern
00:10:26and it won't distort.
00:10:32Once you've stapled that centre point at the base,
00:10:35you take one of your pool noodle halves
00:10:38and place it over that centre point
00:10:40and just for the first one,
00:10:42I'm going to use some hot glue
00:10:43to hold it in place.
00:10:57OK, now you take the fabric
00:11:00and you want to pull it up fairly tight
00:11:02over the pool noodle
00:11:03and make sure that that centre crease
00:11:06in your fabric
00:11:07is over the middle of the pool noodle.
00:11:10Then hold it tight, grab your staple gun,
00:11:14start on one side
00:11:15and put a staple in somewhere near the top,
00:11:19fairly close to the noodle.
00:11:25Right, now the first one is in,
00:11:27so then you put the fabric
00:11:31back over the pool noodle,
00:11:34press it fairly tight against the noodle
00:11:36and grab your second one on one side,
00:11:40place it up firmly against the first noodle,
00:11:44pull your fabric back over
00:11:47and then make sure it's straight and lined up.
00:11:51Take your staple gun again
00:11:53and do the exact same thing.
00:11:55Just make sure that you're holding the fabric
00:11:57really firmly so that it's nice and tight.
00:12:09I'm going to continue adding pool noodles
00:12:11just like this
00:12:12and I'll secure the fabric
00:12:13at the bottom of the board as I go.
00:12:15Folding the excess fabric into pleats
00:12:17to keep it neat and out of the way.
00:12:20On the home stretch now,
00:12:22just this end and the other one
00:12:24and then I'll fold the fabric over
00:12:26and secure it at the back
00:12:28and then I'll be done.
00:12:48Lana, do you want to come take a look at
00:12:50look one?
00:12:52Oh my gosh, this is incredible.
00:12:55You did ask for a pop of colour
00:12:56so that's exactly what I gave you
00:12:58on this bare white wall.
00:12:59Honestly, I would have never picked blue
00:13:01for this room
00:13:02but it works perfectly
00:13:04and it's like,
00:13:05I'm the green,
00:13:06I love the green.
00:13:08It's a very classic look.
00:13:09It's timeless.
00:13:10It'll sort of last forever.
00:13:12Yeah, it's incredible
00:13:12and it feels really calm.
00:13:14Like it feels,
00:13:16yeah, I love it.
00:13:17Well, this is the first look.
00:13:19I do have another idea for you.
00:13:22Should I go start working on that?
00:13:23Yeah, let's go.
00:13:26This pool noodle headboard
00:13:28looks absolutely stunning
00:13:29but next week
00:13:31I'm making a headboard
00:13:32that's just as easy
00:13:33but in a totally different style.
00:13:47One of the most frequent things
00:13:48I get asked about
00:13:49when it comes to our makeovers
00:13:50is why do we use so many plants
00:13:52and think about how much it costs.
00:13:53Well, yes,
00:13:55we do put a lot of plants in the ground
00:13:56but the whole idea
00:13:57is to inspire you
00:13:59and get you out in the garden.
00:14:00But what are my favourite three things
00:14:02to do to save a bit of cash?
00:14:04Well, you can plant plants a lot smaller.
00:14:06That sounds obvious
00:14:06but something like this peace lily
00:14:08if you bought it in a small 140ml pot
00:14:1012 to 18 months time
00:14:12you'll have something like this.
00:14:14You can plant things
00:14:15that are really easy to propagate.
00:14:17Hydrangeas, for example
00:14:18they propagate really easily
00:14:20as do ground covers.
00:14:22You can split this up
00:14:23into maybe four plants
00:14:24spread it around the garden
00:14:25it's a super easy way
00:14:26to save some cash.
00:14:28The last thing I like to do
00:14:29is think about spacing
00:14:30when it comes to planting.
00:14:37So when you're planting a garden out
00:14:38think about how big
00:14:39something's going to be
00:14:40when it's about 75%
00:14:41of its mature height
00:14:42and plant it at that height.
00:14:44This fat tier, for example
00:14:45I give that about a metre
00:14:46to a metre and a half.
00:14:47So if you follow those tips
00:14:49you can have a pretty garden
00:14:50but it won't cost you
00:14:51a pretty penny.
00:14:58We're turning Mike's
00:14:59untouched single car garage
00:15:01into a multifunctional space
00:15:03with heaps of storage
00:15:04and yes, we'll even fit
00:15:05his shiny new car.
00:15:07Pete, you like splashing
00:15:08around the waves
00:15:09and you like keeping
00:15:10your head in the clouds
00:15:10we've found an
00:15:11architectural masterpiece

00:16:01Pete there's something
00:16:02so magical
00:16:03about watching waves
00:16:05just kind of
00:16:05lap onto a shoreline.
00:16:07You're right
00:16:07it's quite mesmerising
00:16:08the patterns that it makes.
00:16:09Well I tell you
00:16:10what the next house
00:16:10that we're about to show you
00:16:11the owner and the architect
00:16:13took that simple idea
00:16:14and said
00:16:14let's turn it into a house.
00:16:23Oh and Jo
00:16:24what an architectural
00:16:26and engineering feat
00:16:26they've created
00:16:27confident and curvy
00:16:29a ceiling
00:16:30that floats amongst the trees.
00:16:31That is magnificent.
00:16:38This is even more beautiful inside.
00:16:41It's amazing
00:16:42look most amazing homes
00:16:44we walk into
00:16:44we're usually looking
00:16:45down and around.
00:16:46Or at the view.
00:16:47Yeah.
00:16:47But here the real wow moment
00:16:49is not by looking down
00:16:50but by looking up
00:16:51at this incredible
00:16:52curving ceiling
00:16:53which is the real hero
00:16:54of this home.
00:16:55And kind of ironic
00:16:56because the owners
00:16:57in their original brief
00:16:58didn't want concrete news.
00:16:59Can you believe it?
00:17:00I think this would have
00:17:00changed their mind.
00:17:01Well concrete had a bad name
00:17:03in the 50s and 60s
00:17:04but here it's light
00:17:05and it's delicate.
00:17:06Yeah.
00:17:07And it's off-formed concrete
00:17:08which means it had to be
00:17:09all formed up in timber
00:17:10but when you peel that off
00:17:12you're left with this
00:17:12beautiful pattern patina.
00:17:14You use the word delicate
00:17:15and I think it's perfect.
00:17:17I think it's that top bank
00:17:17of windows
00:17:18that leaves you with a feeling
00:17:19that this roof is just
00:17:20kind of floating
00:17:22above the entire home.
00:17:23It's a really important point,
00:17:24Shell.
00:17:24It's not only delicate
00:17:25but elegant.
00:17:26The definition of elegance
00:17:27being something heavy
00:17:29held up by something light.
00:17:30Like a stiletto shoe, right?
00:17:32Here we have those poles
00:17:33holding up the concrete roof.
00:17:35Yeah.
00:17:35And then Pete
00:17:36you've got the most
00:17:37magnificent lighting.
00:17:38The up lighting
00:17:39which just highlights
00:17:40everything that you want
00:17:41or appreciate about this ceiling
00:17:42and then these amazing
00:17:44cloud pendant lights
00:17:46that honestly
00:17:46they're very organic shape
00:17:48but again
00:17:48they just complement the curves.
00:17:50This house
00:17:51very much inspired by nature.
00:17:52Ooh
00:17:54But you think it's
00:17:56she is so cool
00:17:58Kicking back on your couch
00:18:00making ice from the sun
00:18:00So it's a two story home
00:18:02but the owners wanted
00:18:03everything that they wanted
00:18:04on one single level
00:18:05and one of the owners
00:18:06is a sensational cook
00:18:08so the kitchen
00:18:08was always going to be
00:18:10something pretty spectacular.
00:18:11The bench top
00:18:12zinc metal
00:18:13which plays into that
00:18:14minimalist architectural aesthetics.
00:18:16Now that coolness
00:18:17is offset by the warmth
00:18:19of the Patagonian marble
00:18:20and the beautiful
00:18:21warm timber joinery
00:18:22but there's always
00:18:22a friendly wrestle
00:18:23between the interior designer
00:18:25and the architecture.
00:18:27Here the hero ceiling
00:18:28didn't want to be interrupted
00:18:29by range hoods
00:18:30and piping
00:18:30so what do they do?
00:18:31So what do they do?
00:18:32They've got this sensational
00:18:33induction cooktop
00:18:35and it has a pop-up range hood
00:18:37so that way
00:18:37all your smoke
00:18:38gets drawn down.
00:18:40But you do have to have
00:18:40some projections through it
00:18:42like downpipes
00:18:43and they're inserted
00:18:44through the valley of the roof
00:18:45and they become design features.
00:18:47You've got all of your appliances here
00:18:49you've got your wine cellar
00:18:50your major fridge.
00:18:54One of the silent features
00:18:56but most important parts
00:18:57of this composition
00:18:58is this horizontal transom
00:19:00which runs around
00:19:01the edge of the room.
00:19:02Now it's set at 2.1 metres
00:19:04above the floor
00:19:05the height of a standard door.
00:19:06It's a modernist technique
00:19:07which keeps everything
00:19:09at a human scale.
00:19:10Below it
00:19:11you have all the furnishings
00:19:12and these deep embracing nooks.
00:19:19Pete!
00:19:20You just walked past this?
00:19:21This is what a wine cellar
00:19:22looks like
00:19:23when it's actually got bottles in it.
00:19:28This has got to be
00:19:30one of the most gorgeous
00:19:31and dramatic powder rooms
00:19:33I think I've ever been in.
00:19:34I'm loving these dark tiles
00:19:36so your eyes can rest a little
00:19:37the contrasting light
00:19:38the toilet that's hidden away
00:19:40back here
00:19:41and then
00:19:41these arches
00:19:42are just the perfect finishing touch.
00:19:55wow look in here
00:19:58this is extraordinary
00:20:00I mean the walk-in robe
00:20:02that is something else
00:20:03and this entweet
00:20:04it goes for days
00:20:06either way
00:20:07beautiful deep bath
00:20:08at that end
00:20:08I mentioned in the powder room
00:20:10how they'd chosen
00:20:11dramatic dark tiles
00:20:12and how it was about
00:20:13resting your eyes
00:20:13I mean look how light filled
00:20:15this house is
00:20:16with so much glass
00:20:17they've done it quite deliberately
00:20:18in all of the bathrooms
00:20:20and also
00:20:20with the colour paint choice here
00:20:22it's to make those intimate areas
00:20:24feel a little bit more cave-like.
00:20:26Yeah the dark colour
00:20:27helps embrace
00:20:28and makes it more intimate.
00:20:29Jo I cannot get over
00:20:31this roof
00:20:31I know
00:20:32I mean we've got to salute
00:20:34the builders and the traders
00:20:35that put this together
00:20:36I mean these dips and curves
00:20:38aren't random
00:20:39they're carefully choreographed
00:20:41to allow the neighbours
00:20:42to see through the dips
00:20:43out to the view
00:20:44now the glass
00:20:45is a story in itself
00:20:47it went in last
00:20:48they had to cut out
00:20:49one-to-one plywood shapes
00:20:52then hand that to the glazier
00:20:54who then laser cut it
00:20:55and then he inserted it
00:20:56I mean this is
00:20:57surgeon-like precision
00:20:59I mean
00:20:59but the result is
00:21:00I mean it'd be like
00:21:01sleeping underneath a wave.
00:21:11Wow this home just continues
00:21:13to deliver Pete
00:21:13now that we've stepped outside
00:21:15I honestly feel like
00:21:16we've gone into some kind of
00:21:17I don't know
00:21:18high-end resort or spa.
00:21:20Well speaking of resorts
00:21:21the original brief
00:21:22was to create a private sanctuary
00:21:24which was experimental
00:21:26and immersive
00:21:27we'll have done that.
00:21:28I mean look at this pool
00:21:30look at this little separation
00:21:31these tiles almost look like
00:21:33it's its own separate pontoon
00:21:34and accessible by both
00:21:35the master bedroom
00:21:36and the main home.
00:21:38We've certainly dived in
00:21:39to high-end design tonight.
00:21:40Ha ha ha ha!
00:21:56And then the downstairs level
00:21:58is all about the guests.
00:22:00There's three guest bedrooms
00:22:01very well proportioned
00:22:03each with their own
00:22:04ensuite and landscape courtyard.
00:22:06Yeah there's also
00:22:06a laundry
00:22:07another powder room
00:22:09and then there's something else
00:22:10that you just have to
00:22:11see and believe.
00:22:14Well Pete if you're going to
00:22:15create the perfect sanctuary
00:22:16I don't think things
00:22:17get more luxurious
00:22:18than this.
00:22:19Yeah car on its own
00:22:20lazy susan.
00:22:21A little turntable
00:22:22so put it this way
00:22:23you never have to worry
00:22:25about reversing out
00:22:26your driveway.
00:22:26Would you be full
00:22:27comfortable driving that?
00:22:28Of course I would.
00:22:29No I wouldn't really.
00:22:39This has been such a treat.
00:22:41It's so easy to see
00:22:42why this home
00:22:43has been making waves
00:22:44in architectural circles.
00:22:46It's already been shortlisted
00:22:47for a number of awards
00:22:48and I'm certain
00:22:49it is going to win
00:22:49many more
00:22:50going into the future.
00:22:51Yeah and well done
00:22:52to architect Nick Kent
00:22:53who by the way
00:22:54worked in the office
00:22:55of the great Australian
00:22:56architect Bruce Rickard
00:22:57who himself was a disciple
00:22:58of the great American
00:22:59architect Frank Lloyd Wright
00:23:00who very much
00:23:01is the inspiration
00:23:02to 20th century modernism
00:23:04and I think both of those
00:23:05masters would be proud
00:23:06of this effort.
00:23:07Well you can definitely
00:23:07see those touches
00:23:08all throughout this design.
00:23:09It is an absolute triumph.
00:23:11I'm sure the wave house
00:23:12will continue to create
00:23:13a few more ripples.
00:23:14I see what you did there.
00:23:17Coming up
00:23:18life's not always
00:23:19peaches and cream
00:23:20sometimes the little
00:23:22custard's good too.
00:23:23Well I'll definitely
00:23:24be making it again
00:23:26and so will you.
00:23:28And is your garage
00:23:29driving you mad?
00:23:31You too can transform
00:23:32your garage
00:23:33into a smarter zone
00:23:34with these storage systems
00:23:36and the best part is
00:23:37you can get it done
00:23:38in a weekend.
00:23:46This segment proudly
00:23:47brought to you
00:23:48by Bunnings Warehouse
00:23:50where you can get
00:23:51the lowest prices
00:23:52every day.
00:23:55Now here's something
00:23:56most of us can relate to.
00:23:57We've got a 1960s home
00:23:59that's recently been updated
00:24:00with a single car garage
00:24:02that hasn't been touched.
00:24:03And now the owner,
00:24:04here he comes now,
00:24:05has decided to go
00:24:06all 21st century
00:24:08and buy himself
00:24:08a beautiful new shiny EV.
00:24:11That's two worlds colliding.
00:24:13What could possibly go wrong?
00:24:21Look at this.
00:24:23Wow wee.
00:24:24Mike, how are you?
00:24:26G'day Adam.
00:24:27How's it going?
00:24:28Loving the wheels, mate.
00:24:30Yeah.
00:24:30Nah, she's a great car.
00:24:32Absolutely beautiful.
00:24:33Definitely a car
00:24:33you'd want to lock up at night.
00:24:35Absolutely.
00:24:36You know, with all the bush
00:24:36around here,
00:24:37we're lucky to have it
00:24:38but that also means
00:24:38a lot of dust.
00:24:39Yeah, well,
00:24:40let's talk about the garage.
00:24:41I can already see
00:24:42one big problem.
00:24:43Yeah, well,
00:24:45the car doesn't fit, mate.
00:24:46Yeah.
00:24:48I think there's a wall in the way.
00:24:50Yeah, it's a bit of a problem.
00:24:51Yeah, yeah.
00:24:52And what about,
00:24:53you know,
00:24:53obviously you've got clutter
00:24:54like everyone does
00:24:55in the garage.
00:24:56I've got to say,
00:24:56it's not too bad
00:24:57but you need storage
00:24:58in your garage as well,
00:24:58don't you?
00:24:59Yeah, that'd be super helpful.
00:25:00We just bring stuff down.
00:25:02Don't have time to think about it
00:25:03too much with three kids
00:25:04so anything that doesn't fit upstairs
00:25:06comes straight down here.
00:25:08Comes straight down here.
00:25:08But now you've got a new baby
00:25:11so we need to make room
00:25:12for that, yeah?
00:25:13Absolutely.
00:25:13But also,
00:25:14we need to make storage
00:25:15because we need somewhere
00:25:16to put all this stuff, yeah?
00:25:17Yeah, that'd be ideal.
00:25:19And what about
00:25:19how you're charging the car?
00:25:21Well, at the moment
00:25:21I'm just running it up
00:25:22to the public EV charger
00:25:23at the shops.
00:25:24Okay.
00:25:25So maybe we think
00:25:26about getting a fast charger
00:25:27in here or something?
00:25:28If you can make it happen.
00:25:29Well, only if you get
00:25:30those guns to work, mate
00:25:31and start moving those weights.
00:25:33Have you seen how dusty they are?
00:25:34Yeah, I've seen
00:25:35the size of your arms.
00:25:38Leave me some for the record.
00:25:40Uh, yeah.
00:25:41Right.
00:25:42Jeepers.
00:25:43What's in here?
00:25:43Getting better by the second
00:25:45time.
00:25:47With everything cleared out
00:25:48it is already looking better.
00:25:50Now, one thing you want
00:25:51to look out for
00:25:52when you're working
00:25:52on a garage of this age
00:25:54is to check for asbestos.
00:25:56If you think you've got it
00:25:57get the professionals in.
00:25:58Now, in our case
00:25:59we're lucky.
00:25:59We've got some masonry walls here
00:26:01and this timber wall
00:26:03and lucky for me
00:26:04this is non-structural
00:26:06which means
00:26:07I can simply
00:26:07just clear it out.
00:26:09How easy is that?
00:26:17Woohoo!
00:26:17Too easy.
00:26:18Now, obviously
00:26:19this wall did serve
00:26:20a purpose
00:26:21making a storage room
00:26:22back here
00:26:23but now
00:26:24we need all the room
00:26:25we can get
00:26:25so
00:26:25it's got to go.
00:26:41Now, I have to say
00:26:42this garage
00:26:43feels huge
00:26:44with this dividing wall
00:26:46taken out
00:26:46but just a little bit
00:26:47mismatched.
00:26:48Now, we all know
00:26:49that one of the key things
00:26:50to a safe workspace
00:26:51is making sure
00:26:53you have good lighting
00:26:54and it's fair to say
00:26:54this garage
00:26:55does not have that
00:26:56so
00:26:56some new lights
00:26:57will help fix that up
00:26:59but you know what else
00:27:00brightens an area?
00:27:01Well,
00:27:01fresh coat of paint.
00:27:16It is amazing
00:27:17what a little bit
00:27:18of paint can do.
00:27:19How much better
00:27:20does this look?
00:27:21Now, while this dries
00:27:22I'm going to head up
00:27:23to the hardware store
00:27:24to deck this garage out.
00:27:42The secret to a successful garage
00:27:44is really all about
00:27:46maximising space
00:27:47and storage
00:27:48and here at Bunnings
00:27:48they have a huge range
00:27:50of heavy duty
00:27:51modular systems
00:27:52with flexible floor plans
00:27:54to help you to create
00:27:55the perfect multi-purpose hub
00:27:57and make the most
00:27:58out of every square metre.
00:28:08and one really efficient way
00:28:09to do that
00:28:10is with these
00:28:10ceiling mount systems
00:28:12which allow you
00:28:13to put tubs
00:28:14up on the ceiling.
00:28:16Absolutely fantastic.
00:28:17Get everything
00:28:17off the ground.
00:28:30The thing that I love
00:28:31about this aisle
00:28:32is they have
00:28:33all the displays
00:28:33set up
00:28:34so you can see
00:28:35what you need.
00:28:36I think to start off
00:28:37I'm going to get
00:28:38these wire shelves here
00:28:39we need extra storage
00:28:40and then that workbench
00:28:42is looking at me
00:28:43every garage
00:28:44needs a good workbench
00:28:45and while I'm at it
00:28:46I'll grab a couple
00:28:47of those cabinets.
00:28:48Oh, this is what

00:29:19is this new
00:29:19heavy duty shelving unit
00:29:21that I picked up
00:29:22and the best thing
00:29:23about them
00:29:23is they're super easy
00:29:24to put together
00:29:25there's no screws
00:29:26or bolts
00:29:27everything just taps
00:29:28in place
00:29:29and this matte black
00:29:30finish
00:29:31well it's going to
00:29:31look great
00:29:32against our nice
00:29:33new white walls.
00:29:50and I've got to say
00:29:51that has to be
00:29:52the quickest shelving
00:29:53unit I've ever put together
00:29:55but we took all
00:29:55the five minutes
00:29:56and look at that
00:30:03one down
00:30:04a few more to go
00:30:17nice
00:30:17the best thing
00:30:19about these
00:30:19locked up cabinets
00:30:20is anything you want
00:30:21to keep away
00:30:22from the kids
00:30:22that's not safe
00:30:23for them
00:30:24can simply be put in here
00:30:25locked up
00:30:26and you'll take the keys
00:30:40with you
00:30:40look at that
00:30:41and it's the perfect
00:30:42weekend workstation
00:30:43just grab what you want
00:30:45cut up a few things
00:30:46beautiful
00:30:48a little later
00:30:49a few more bits and pieces
00:30:50to fit out in Mike's garage
00:30:52then the big question
00:30:54will his car now fit?

00:31:30on 7 plus
00:31:40it's an absolute peach
00:31:42of a day
00:31:42but I'm about to make
00:31:44this day a whole lot
00:31:45better
00:31:45by making
00:31:47the best peach tart
00:31:48you're going to see
00:31:53so this recipe will use
00:31:54about 6 peaches
00:31:56so you don't want
00:31:57them too soft
00:31:58you want a little bit
00:31:59of firmness in there
00:32:00because we're going to
00:32:00cook them
00:32:01twist it
00:32:04do that 6 times
00:32:15we're going to slice our peaches
00:32:17we're going to slice our peaches
00:32:17not too thin
00:32:17you want a little bit
00:32:18of thickness
00:32:21get them into a bowl
00:32:28that's enough peaches
00:32:29now we're going to add a little bit
00:32:31of flavouring
00:32:32I've got some nutmeg
00:32:34about a teaspoon of nutmeg
00:32:37and this wins
00:32:38will be interesting
00:32:41there you go
00:32:42teaspoon of nutmeg
00:32:45any condition
00:32:46I'm here for better homes and gardens
00:32:48doesn't matter
00:32:48I'm here for you
00:32:54alright got my nutmeg
00:32:56got my cinnamon
00:32:56little bit of lemon zest
00:33:03I've got some thyme
00:33:04a little bit of lemon thyme
00:33:05thyme or lemon thyme
00:33:06now a lot of people
00:33:08don't associate a herb
00:33:10like this with sweet cookery
00:33:11but it really emphasises
00:33:13the peach
00:33:14so add a little bit
00:33:15of our thyme in there
00:33:16pick it in
00:33:19little pinch of salt
00:33:21helps bring everything out
00:33:26and about a teaspoon
00:33:27of vanilla paste
00:33:30look at the wind
00:33:31go
00:33:32and now what you do is
00:33:34just mix it
00:33:39so let the peaches
00:33:40get covered in all that flavour
00:33:43alright so that's our peaches
00:33:45nutmeg
00:33:45cinnamon
00:33:46salt
00:33:47lemon zest
00:33:48that goes there
00:33:49I need something to go
00:33:50under the peaches
00:33:51so I thought
00:33:52why not apricots
00:33:53and nuts
00:33:54because it's going to be soft
00:33:55it's going to be sweet
00:33:56so I soaked some apricots
00:33:59so about a handful
00:34:00just drain them off
00:34:01it would be like
00:34:01a little soft bed
00:34:03for it to sit on
00:34:04give them a quick chop
00:34:10next we've got macadamia nuts
00:34:12great for roasting
00:34:13great texture
00:34:14so about the same nuts
00:34:15a little bit of my thyme
00:34:17just roughly chop that as well
00:34:26all right
00:34:26get that into a bowl
00:34:38all we need now is the pastry
00:34:39and a little secret ingredient
00:34:41that's going to sweeten this dish up
00:34:43I love to use puff pastry for this
00:34:45just because it swells up around
00:34:47whatever you're going to use it in
00:34:48I roll it out
00:34:51great from the fridge
00:34:52work with it when it's cold
00:34:54all right
00:34:55I was thinking
00:34:55something under the peaches
00:34:57because the peaches are going to be quite sweet
00:34:59so marmalade
00:35:00because the marmalade is a little bit bitter
00:35:02so that with the sweetness
00:35:04and it's going to add a nice stickiness
00:35:06when you roast it
00:35:07so you've got your marmalade
00:35:12so I reckon a generous helping
00:35:14and we're just going to spread it
00:35:15like you would on bread
00:35:20look at that
00:35:24we've got our nut and apricot mix
00:35:26we're going to spread that on
00:35:30so we don't want to go right to the edge
00:35:32so leave a little barrier
00:35:33and spread that out
00:35:37so we've still got a little sort of picture frame
00:35:40around the actual pastry
00:35:43so you get your peaches
00:35:46and basically
00:35:47you're just going to overlap
00:35:49the whole way along the tart
00:35:51fitting as many as you can in
00:35:54be generous
00:36:07all right you've basically covered
00:36:08all your apricot and your nuts
00:36:09and now what you want to do
00:36:11is just lock everything in
00:36:12and just sort of roll the pastry
00:36:14so it forms a little guard
00:36:16and this what happens is
00:36:17this will blow up around the pastry
00:36:19when we cook it
00:36:21all right
00:36:21beautiful
00:36:22so that encloses in all your tart
00:36:25and that will puff up when we roast it
00:36:26onto a roasting tray
00:36:33so that goes in the oven
00:36:34200 degrees
00:36:35for about 25 minutes
00:36:37until the pastry is crisp underneath
00:36:47all right what goes well with a tart
00:36:49a custard
00:36:51so I'm going to use about 250 ml of cream
00:36:55250 ml of milk
00:36:57bring it to the boil
00:37:03I'm going to flavour that with two tablespoons of white sugar
00:37:07just to sweeten it
00:37:12a little bit of nutmeg
00:37:13just a little bit
00:37:15a little pinch of vanilla
00:37:28about six to eight egg yolks
00:37:29depending on the size of the egg
00:37:31so separate your eggs
00:37:33you just want the yolks
00:37:34so the yolk is what thickens it
00:37:39freeze your egg whites
00:37:40for later on
00:37:42just whisk them
00:37:47all right
00:37:48the reason that you don't put the egg yolks
00:37:50straight into the boiling hot cream
00:37:53is you'll have scrambled eggs straight away
00:37:54so what you do is you pour the boiling hot cream
00:37:57into the cold egg yolks
00:37:59and cold bowl
00:38:01so a little bit at a time
00:38:02so pour a little bit in
00:38:07give it a mix just to incorporate
00:38:22now what we do is
00:38:23mixture back into our pot
00:38:28and onto the flame
00:38:30now this is where you do not walk away
00:38:33you just stir it
00:38:34and it will thicken
00:38:36but as it heats
00:38:37the egg yolks are going to cook
00:38:39so what happens is
00:38:41it should coat the back of the spoon
00:38:43and you're left with a mark
00:38:45that's how it's thick enough
00:38:46so it's not overly thick
00:38:47it's a very light custard
00:38:49get it off into a cold bowl
00:39:05so what you do now is
00:39:07off the tray
00:39:09so you just want to get a nice slice
00:39:20look at that
00:39:21so you've got the soft fruit
00:39:23the crunchy nuts
00:39:24you've got those peaches melting
00:39:25you've got the marmalade
00:39:27that's making it sticky sauce
00:39:32that
00:39:34drizzled some custard
00:39:43oh yeah
00:39:44oh yeah
00:39:44the marmalade is standard
00:39:46I'll definitely be making it again
00:39:49and so will you
00:40:20cause you're not my girl
00:40:20the marmalade isal makes a beautiful leather journal

00:40:56if you ask me the ideal garage should be one that's match fit for weekend sports
00:41:02DIY projects and all that seasonal storage so i'm helping my mate mike re-emerging his single car garage
00:41:11and we don't want to forget about that unused space sitting right above our heads
00:41:15so now i'm ready to put the ceiling mounts on
00:41:17like i say you can never have too many containers
00:41:32now it's ready for a test run
00:41:37look at that they're fantastic
00:41:39i can even walk underneath it
00:41:41heaps a room and i'm enjoying
00:41:56well this garage is definitely coming together but now i want to add a little bit of a personal touch
00:42:02and i've got a great idea with this spot right here
00:42:07so the plan is to make a wall unit it's basically like a spice rack for all your bits and
00:42:12pieces
00:42:12like your spray cans your glues and your gap filler
00:42:15the material i'm using is some 140 by 19 dressed pine
00:42:19easy to get your hands on from the hardware saw
00:42:22the only thing i have done is given it a coat of undercoat
00:42:25and also i've got this 42 by 19 which i'm going to use as my mounting block
00:42:30so first thing i need to do is cut everything to size
00:42:49all right so the way this works is we've got two sides they're 600 mil long
00:42:55then i've got five shelves they're 400 mil long
00:42:58and those mounting blocks which are also 400 mil
00:43:02now i'm just going to start by making the perimeter of the frame
00:43:05counting all different ideas drifting away
00:43:11past and present and now they're not a future sort it out
00:43:18what you're moving in elliptical about a thing it's not what you say
00:43:23what you say is way to complicated
00:43:25for a minute thought i couldn't tell how to fall out
00:43:30all right so that is the main frame together but you can see you're not going to be storing
00:43:33much in here with just a rectangle so to fix that up i'm going to be adding these shelves
00:43:38now here's a handy little tip if you don't have a protractor
00:43:41you can simply print one off like i have here and then i'm going to be using my bevel to
00:43:45set the angle
00:43:46which for me is 25 degrees now the reason why i'm doing that is if i set these shelves in
00:43:52square
00:43:52this would have to be a lot taller to fit all the bits and pieces in so by putting it
00:43:57on the angle that allows you to keep it compact slide all your stuff in and it is a great
00:44:02little
00:44:02space saver all right so when it comes to using this protractor you want to start on the 90 that's
00:44:08basically that is our zero and then we want to subtract 25 from that to get our 25 degree angle
00:44:14so that means i'll pull this across to the 65 make sure we're lined up in the center down here
00:44:20at
00:44:21our pivot point and then you know that you've got the correct angle and you can lock it in place
00:44:44i'm going to get some matte black spray paint go over the whole lot which will tie everything together
00:45:03how good does that look absolutely works a treat and if you like this project
00:45:07and want to give it a go yourself and you need the worksheet make sure you drop us an email
00:45:27oh hi the ev charger mike is going to absolutely love that would be perfect for his car
00:45:33and this store ease starter kit is great for getting everything off the ground
00:45:52there's only one thing left to do let's just see what mike thinks of it hey mate this is
00:46:01unbelievable a little bit different overhead storage yeah i mean straight away you can see
00:46:08how much of a difference the paint work makes doesn't it it just brightens the whole area and
00:46:13then these lights as well i mean you can actually see what's going on here it's really just opened the
00:46:17whole thing up i'd never have thought we would have this much room in here yeah it was amazing
00:46:22actually because as soon as we took this dividing wall out just blew the whole area wide open and it's
00:46:27allowed us to get these smart storage systems in i mean each one of these shelves can take 600 kilos
00:46:33sounds like i'm going to need to buy more weights might have that home gym finally yeah definitely
00:46:38definitely and you've even got some locked up cabinets over here so if you want to keep stuff
00:46:42out the way of the kids you can put it in there but most importantly obviously i like my diy
00:46:47so i did
00:46:47get you a little workstation here you're inspiring me adam might have to get a little bit more uh handy
00:46:53myself yeah definitely mate if you need some tips mate seven o'clock channel seven now i did say at
00:46:58the start if you help me clear out move those heavy weights i might get you a surprise how about
00:47:03this little ev charger here mate hey that's fantastic that's going to help you out isn't it
00:47:09no absolutely it's going to definitely save me a lot of time can do this overnight while the car's
00:47:14parked in here hopefully well that is the big question does the car fit in the garage let's find out
00:47:20let's go bring it in mate fingers crossed
00:47:38look at this you can even swing the door open
00:47:46you know what i say that is right that is a job well done absolutely nailed it
00:48:07coming up melissa's visiting a flower farm that'll sweep you off your feet it really is
00:48:12hard not to fall in love with roses and if your pot of trees are struggling there's only one man
00:48:19for
00:48:19the job i've got an olive to save
00:48:35roses bring so much joy to our lives it's no wonder they're called the queen of flowers
00:48:40so they symbolize love and beauty and they're appreciated the world over for their spectacular
00:48:45color and fragrance just magnificent so if you're looking for some top performing varieties for your
00:48:51home garden well this amazing place may just have you coming up roses i was living my life until you
00:48:58came along a person that could do no wrong i'm in sylvan victoria in the stunning dandenong ranges at
00:49:07the anthony tesla international trial gardens which aren't open to the public so we're really lucky to
00:49:12be here it's like a living showroom of plants spread over two and a half acres and it's not just
00:49:18roses that
00:49:18the trial here it's a whole bunch of different plants but today it's a rose lovers paradise
00:49:31so justin you guys are expert plant breeders and selectors what is it that you're looking
00:49:36for out of the trial gardens here well basically melissa with these trial gardens we're looking to
00:49:40bring new plant varieties into australia so we need to make sure they perform in our climate and
00:49:46environments and what is it that you are looking for in a top performing plant basically we need to
00:49:51know that um it's going to perform and be be easy maintenance yeah lots of flowers if it's flowering
00:49:58but just easy care is the main thing we want we want the gardener to put it in the ground
00:50:03and it'd be no fuss so in a way you're doing all the hard work for the home gardener that's
00:50:08right so we'll
00:50:09trial these plants for up to seven years to make sure that they perform as expected and i can't go
00:50:15without talking about the color of this rose yeah this was an old variety that we trialed a number
00:50:20of years ago uh we loved the color but unfortunately there were other aspects to it that didn't didn't
00:50:26suit uh what we were looking for for the home gardeners and i guess that does happen does it you
00:50:30spend all this time on something and then it doesn't necessarily you know play out exactly and uh
00:50:35unfortunately this is one of those for us so uh we still keep it here because we we love we
00:50:40love the
00:50:41form of it but yeah there's aspects of it that just don't suit i love that you're looking for that
00:50:45and
00:50:45that that's what a trial garden's for right yeah exactly so yeah we kiss many frogs here
00:50:51and end up with a prince
00:51:04taking center stage of the showpiece roses now these are a great example of how good things come with time
00:51:10because these roses have been 20 years in the making and you can see why they're just stunning so
00:51:16they've got full double large flowers and they're highly fragrant so they have a touch of old world
00:51:22charm but they also have everything that we love about the modern roses so for example they're long
00:51:27flowering you get blooms on these plants from late spring all the way through to winter and they have
00:51:32excellent disease resistance and you can see they're nice and compact so they have a great shape and they only
00:51:38grow to about a meter tall which makes them perfect for small gardens and patios this beautiful one
00:51:43here is called champagne you can see it has beautiful apricot tones through the flower here's another
00:51:50stunner this is lipstick and you can see that the buds start out bright red but then they turn to
00:51:56this
00:51:56gorgeous sort of hot pink color and then another of my favorites blush over here which has a blush colored
00:52:02flower but the foliage is really beautiful and glossy and it's perfect in pots and containers
00:52:15it's been around for 30 plus years but the flower carpet rose is still the world's number one ground
00:52:20covering rose and it's easy to see why so this is a collection that was released in 1992 and when
00:52:27it was
00:52:27released it really did change the face of what we think a rose should be because it was a no
00:52:32fuss
00:52:33plant and as a result it introduced the world of roses to a whole new generation of amateur and novice
00:52:39gardeners and it's a plant that's got a lot going for it so for a start the sheer number of
00:52:44flowers you get
00:52:44masses of flowers on this plant for up to 10 months of the year and the flowers are self-cleaning
00:52:50so there's
00:52:50no need to deadhead and even pruning is optional now every year the collection keeps getting bigger and
00:52:56better and this is the latest star in the range so this one is called flower carpet mini cherry so
00:53:01you
00:53:01can see it's got a smaller flower than a lot of the other varieties in the range but look at
00:53:06the sheer
00:53:06number of flowers on this plant it's also nice and compact but still sprawling so it's perfect for
00:53:12mass covering the ground using it in borders or of course pots
00:53:30the flower carpet roses are so low maintenance that even if you decide not to prune they'll still
00:53:35flower on a slightly larger bush but if you do decide to prune it's super easy super easy as
00:53:40simple as a hedge trimmer we've all got one now there's no fancy pruning and they really are the
00:53:44best rose for a novice or amateur gardener that's looking to get into roses yeah so we're talking like
00:53:50two-thirds back in the winter two-thirds back in the winter they'll flower in the spring right through
00:53:55the following winter honestly super simple there's no reason not to grow roses at home that's right they're
00:54:05perfect
00:54:05it really is hard not to fall in love with roses and thanks to expert breeding and selection
00:54:15and rigorous testing in trial gardens like this as home gardeners we really do have access to the pick
00:54:21of the best so next time you're out at your local garden center make sure you check out some of
00:54:25these
00:54:25gorgeous varieties and you know i'm going to say it this weekend take some time out to smell the roses
00:54:36some people get too big for their boots this olive much too big for its pot

00:55:26if i was to say to you that this olive tree here was rooted you might say to me looks
00:55:30pretty healthy
00:55:31charles and i would reply stop that filthy language this is a family show i'm using a technical term of
00:55:36course the plant's so healthy it's bust through the bottom of the pot and it is completely stuck now
00:55:41it could stay like this and live a healthy life but it's not really in the right spot and it's
00:55:45going to
00:55:45be much happier if i can get it into the ground but before i move it i need to work
00:55:49out exactly how a tree works
00:55:58it is easy to forget with trees that what you see above the ground in the canopy
00:56:03is replicated below the ground in the root zone now that doesn't mean the roots go as deep as the
00:56:08plant is high but they do spread out two to three times the width of the plant and that is
00:56:12all part of
00:56:13the ingenious design that keeps them upright during rain hail or shine
00:56:23of course you can keep big trees in pots but it's not set and forget like when you plant them
00:56:28in the
00:56:29ground and bonsais are a great example of this you can keep massive trees like oaks and maples
00:56:34in tiny little pots but you will have to water them at least a couple of times a day there's
00:56:38a strict
00:56:39feeding regime and then there's the repotting but enough about that i've got an olive to save
00:56:53we could easily lift this olive up put it into a bigger pot and it would have a happy life
00:56:57if
00:56:57we kept it pruned but i want it to reach its full potential so we're going to put it in
00:57:01a nice sunny
00:57:02spot we're digging the hole before we start moving it and the reason we do that is because we don't
00:57:07want
00:57:07to leave it out of the ground for too long because it adds too much stress and because we're reducing
00:57:11the root system by so much we also need to reduce the canopy it lessens the transpiration rate and also
00:57:17as it's in fruit it stops the energy going into those fruit and the plant will start putting out
00:57:21new roots i've also noticed it's not particularly healthy it's covered in scale so by reducing the
00:57:26canopy we remove a lot of that scale and the fresh growth will have less of it so get on
00:57:31to a bit of
00:57:42this may seem quite harsh but it is a really important step and olives can take a really hard
00:57:47prune back one thing you do want to make sure you're doing at the same time is remove any crossing
00:57:52branches like that one because over time they're only going to impede on the plant's growth i'm
00:57:57pretty happy with that the next stage we have to go to is removing the pot it's in i'm going
00:58:01to use an
00:58:01angle grinder going to cut around the base and then up the sides and it should just peel away with
00:58:05these
00:58:22so if you were moving a plant that was in the ground you'd want to take as much of the
00:58:26root ball
00:58:26as you possibly could but here our hole's pretty much been dug for us we've got all the roots we
00:58:32need in the pot we do have one that's obviously gone through the bottom of the pot into the ground
00:58:37so i'm just gonna try and lift it with this shovel to see exactly what we're dealing with
00:58:45that was a lot easier than i thought it was going to be i thought we might have to chop
00:58:49through that but
00:58:50you can see here that was the root going through the bottom of the pot so we've severed that and
00:58:56you can see all the roots coming out into the ground so it's time to get this into our hole
00:59:05what you'll often find when you're planting up a pot that's been rooted is it's really
00:59:11root bound so this mat of roots just won't let fresh roots out so you really need to disturb the
00:59:16surface
00:59:16if it's really bad you can take an old hand saw and cut down the edge so you've got fresh
00:59:20potting
00:59:21mix this one luckily for us isn't too bad so i can just use my fingers to rough up the
00:59:26edge of the
00:59:26root ball making sure we've got plenty of potting mix exposed for fresh roots to get out into our new
00:59:33soil now once that's done it can go directly into the hole we've improved that with compost so it holds
00:59:38on to moisture and nutrients for longer and simple standard planting procedure not too deep not too shallow
00:59:45you want the orientation to be perfect so you don't have to move it again then we'll just backfill and
00:59:50water it in
01:00:05when it comes to watering more is more you really do want to soak the ground that helps to get
01:00:10the soil
01:00:10in contact with the root system of the plant which will mean they'll dry out a lot less quickly and
01:00:15you'll have a lot less stress plants do it nice and slowly don't try and soak it too quickly that
01:00:20way it works its way in once you finish with the hose i like to get a watering can with
01:00:25some seaweed
01:00:25tonic and finish it off with that now you don't do this first otherwise you'll just wash it through
01:00:29and i use this over a fertilizer because the fertilizer will push out new growth whereas this
01:00:35will just reduce the stress on your new plant so within about 12 months our olive tree is going to
01:00:50be looking like it never rooted itself in its pot in that location it's going to bounce right back
01:00:55in the perfect world we would have moved it before it had put roots down through the pot and into
01:00:59the
01:00:59ground now something like this this is the perfect time to pop this into the ground this is ficus
01:01:04lyrata you'd want to rough those roots up this one on the other hand well this one you can tell
01:01:10by
01:01:10the roots on the top it's already pretty root bound so i'm going to show you how to revive this
01:01:14and put it up into a bigger pot oh have a look at that
01:01:20like the olive tree we need to remove some of the canopy before we start tampering with the roots i'm
01:01:25going to start with any of the crossing limbs and take them down as low as i can
01:01:32just take the tips off this one too so then from those cuts we're going to get new shoots
01:01:38and it just reduces that canopy a little bit further and with that done i can get on to pruning
01:01:46the roots now you can see how these roots are circling around because they've been stuck in the
01:01:51pot for too long if i put this into a bigger pot new roots aren't going to be able to
01:01:55get out and
01:01:55just going to keep going round and round so you can take your secateurs and trim them all off but
01:01:59i
01:01:59find using an old timber saw is a much better way to do it especially if it's an old one
01:02:04you're not
01:02:04worried about it getting blunt and what you want to do is basically cut the edge of the roots off
01:02:19you can tell i'm a landscaper and not a carpenter but there's plenty of space here for new roots
01:02:23to get out into the fresh potting mix and you want to be using the best you can afford to
01:02:27give your
01:02:27plants the nutrition they need to make sure they don't get pot bound again you want to check on them
01:02:33every 12 months and they'll really thank you for it pete and i have had so much fun showing you
01:02:45through this amazing home i mean i personally think it's probably one of the best homes that
