The World Meteorological Organization has announced that Hurricane Melissa has been retired after the storm devastated the Caribbean, including the island nation of Jamaica, back in October 2025.
Transcript
00:00There will never be another Hurricane Melissa in the Atlantic.
00:03The World Meteorological Organization has officially retired the name after the storm
00:08left what officials describe as total devastation across parts of Jamaica and Caribbean.
00:13Entire communities were flooded, homes were torn apart, infrastructure was heavily damaged
00:18as the powerful hurricane carved across the islands.
00:21Officials say the destruction and loss of life were so severe that reusing the name would
00:25be too painful for the community still recovering.
00:27Melissa now becomes the 100th Atlantic storm name to be permanently retired since 1954.
00:35It joins other retired M storms including Mitch, Maria, Michael and most recently Milton in
00:422024.
00:43When the naming cycle returns in 2031, Melissa will be replaced with the name Molly.
00:50Retiring a name only happens when a storm leaves a lasting mark.
00:53And for many across the Caribbean, Melissa did exactly that.
