00:00It came out of nowhere and turned deadly fast.

00:03Hurricane Melissa just became one of the most powerful storms in Atlantic history.

00:07In just two days, Melissa exploded from a tropical storm to a Category 5 monster,

00:12with winds reaching 185 mph.

00:15It slammed into Jamaica, the strongest hurricane ever recorded there,

00:20knocking out power for nearly 80% of the country.

00:23Homes ripped apart.

00:25Roads flooded.

00:26And entire towns left cut off.

00:28At least 30 people across the Caribbean have died.

00:31But that number could still rise.

00:33Jamaica, Cuba, Haiti, and the Bahamas all took heavy hits.

00:38In Haiti, 25 people drowned when a river burst its banks.

00:42In Cuba, over 7 in 35,000 were evacuated before Melissa made landfall.

00:47Rescue crews pushed ambulances through storm debris in Jamaica.

00:50And officials described the damage with one word, catastrophic.
